Lol every time I see these knives' names (especially together) it reminds me of NCIS. Leroy Jethro Gibbs. I just saw Bryan's (Survival On Purpose) video on the Jethro/SCHF48, and it looks really nice. I like the bowie shape of the Leroy/SCHF45 too.
I can't do the Jethro. I really like the 45 though. Going to resharpen it tonight after the kids go to bed (after polishing). I wish they'd do another version of the 45 in 1070.
My issue with the Jethro is it feels too forward heavy with that short handle. I see a clear choil, but it's actually painful to try and put your hand in that position. I really wanted to like it. I really really want the 45 in 1070 with a saber grind. Give it another number, but make it!
I saw a video once where the Leroy was going to chop through a 2 inch tree limb to see how fast it could do so. One chop into the test, the blade had a catastrophic failure. It broke into 2 pieces. I would be interested to know if Schrade has addressed this uncharacteristic error.
so basically the 48 is a better chopper while the 45 performs better in batoning. i am not surprised, the fact is that while the 48 is an amazing "low-price" tool is basically not a knife. the 45 is a bowie, it has the shape of a knife, i appreciate it more. sorry for mistakes, i am not english.
Thanks Ben. I was wondering about that Jethro... nice to see you put it in test against the 45. Well done. I don't know that I'd ever purchase either one. I still like better the concept of a lightweight folding saw, and say perhaps an SCHF-52 for the chopping and batoning, along with a good bushcraft knife for finer work. But that's my own preference at this time. I'm sure others may choose one of these as an option. A great job in showing the capabilities of both. Keep up the great work!
Great comparison. I have the 45 and was considering getting the 48, your vid may have convinced me. I liked the vine chopping tests the most for some reason.
Knife designers and end users are guilty with both of these designs, choils serve less purpose on large knives than smaller blades as it promotes an improper technique that facilitates wrist fatigue and danger due to the length and heft of the blade. The Jethro also falls victim to the actual edge ending well over an inch from the choil, that edge area is critical on a khukuri style blade and many makers seem to neglect it badly these days. Doing detail work with a large blade isn't hard, simply stick the tip into some wood (edge away from you) and draw the wood backwards towards you. A lot less effort and a lot less danger over all. I still think both these designs still look okay with a choil, even if it is a waste of space in the end.
Living Survival I don't think I've ever pounded a knife, machete or khukuri into the wood before I used that technique. I always use my off hand to support the handle.
TurtleWolf Pack Ah I got ya. With bigger knives it is sometimes harder to hold it with the other hand and pounding it in a bit really helps the stability.
loved the video and subscribed! Thanks for the effort. One thing I noticed though. Wouldn't you be able to chop and cut way better if you used your right hand? just messing with you! thanks again...
+Ed Rodriguez can't baton with an axe. i like axes for larger chopping and collecting large amounts of wood for a sustained fire. for a day hike or small fire batoning with a large knife is the way to go for me.
Better sheath would be better, and an ambidextrous sheath would be nice. I'm an old left handed bushcrafter and I have been carrying right handed sheaths on my left side for years. Ya get used to having to turning the knife around to use it.
I wish that Schrade had continued the cutting edge on the Jethro all the way back instead of leaving that dull area just in front of the choile. The Leroy is sharpened all the way back, which would allow for some finer tasks. And Schrade really needs to add snaps to their velcro closure straps on such big knives. Velcro can become rather useless if it gets dirty in the field. As far as cleaning the grunge on the blade, a small amount of gun oil and a rag will take it right off. Nice review!! ;-)
+Charles Larson agreed on the velcro. the sheaths are a big downer for me but they are functional somewhat. i found that it wasn't comfortable at all to go finer closer to the choil and the belly portion and tip was the sweet spot.
I cut the belt loop off and made a new loop out of kydex & made a dangler loop. It worked alright but then I made a dangler leather sheath which is much quieter than the plastic sheath.
Say Heah, At a quick look, I could of swore you were going to do a review on my Mutt and Jeff, Mine are the Ka-Bar BK-20 and the BK-4, Mutt is almost a 11" blade and a 1/4" thick and Jeff is 9.3"+ and. 188" thick or 3/16". But big surprises come in small packages. I've been using my BK-4,BK-5 combo for a 2Knife Lite Carry for a while and sometimes just because I was a little tired (lazy) I would baton or chop with the closest at hand knife with great success. Both functioned great and made out of the 1095 CroVan Carbon. Now adding the Beast that I call Mutt in this post, Only time will tell, From my understanding it comes from a military background a knife that was used by the military on jungle use.
now that you mention it thrunite is also common al lot on youtube video's it will mss a sales stunt, I'm just working on you tube , they won't send me;-) maybe that is for the best, ive been very critical LOL
Finger choil on the 48 looks safer to use then the 45. 45 Being so close the the cutting edge. Maybe it was just camera angle. Good video as always Ben thanks for the review.
i think shrade has solid designs they need to make some premium versions of there good performers i dont mind paying more for quality as long as its not rediculous
Yeah Ben I concure with you, I like the Jethro allot more than the Leroy. Jethro seemed like it was was more forceful about getting through that red oak than leroy was, which I believe is due to the leverage you get from that recurved roach belly and the Kukri design. It looks allot like Tops Bushcrafter Kukuri, but also allot larger. The sheaths are crap, won't get any argument from me on that. I think I would be hitting up Doug Wilson or Gary Lawson to have a sideways lean baldric instead of verticle carry baldric sheath. Good review Ben. love the MBB shirt, way to represent.
Lol, good job with the names. More reviewers should get on the companies over the lefty thing. I'm not a lefty, but just from a business perspective, they pretty much alienate 10% of potential buyers.
Man ya cant beat it for the price! like most knife packages there are a few details that could use attention. Most noteably the sccabard. But when ya go changin stuff like that the price point keeps raising. If ya get around to testing it out I'm sure you won't be let down
There's three things about the 48/Jethro that I don't get Schrade's design logic at all on: 1. (and this is my biggest issue of all) Why on God's green earth did they not finish the sharpened edge all the way back to the choil, ESPECIALLY when the grind/primary bevel goes farther back than the sharpened edge?! I don't get that at all, and it would make it 100x more useful in the choked up position if the sharpened edge when all the way back to the choil, IMO. Having that blank unsharpened spot on the blade makes 0 sense to me. 2. Why did they put the little section of jimping down where the handle is and not on the spine of the blade right above the choil? If you're going to have jimping on a blade, having it above the choil area makes the most sense. Again, IMO. 3. I love the khukukri/kukri design influences, but they should've taken the cue from an actual kukri/khukuri and have the sharp angle bend up about midway in the blade, not back at the handle. That sharp looking point where it bends just screams uncomfortable to me when choked up on the blade using the choil.
+kpw528 the jimping makes no sense to me either and I could do without it. the unsharpened blade makes no sense but it actually doesn't matter to me on this one since that is the most uncomfortable place to use the blade with finer stuff anyway. overall i like it and it was more comfortable all around than the 45.
FYI per Schrades website they are NOT the same steel. 48 is 3CR13 and the 45 is 8Cr13Mov. IMO the 45 has the superior steel. Had some bad experiences with 3Cr. 48 taylorbrandsllc.com/products/schrade-jethro-full-tang-drop-point-re-curve-fixed-blade-knife 45 taylorbrandsllc.com/products/schrade-full-tang-drop-point-fixed-blade-knife
I've seen vids of 8Cr13 blades snapping in half or blades chipping off even the size of a quarter. I haven't seen the same with 3Cr13. I'm guessing 8Cr13 is harder and perhaps less durable.
I think they are loosing valuable blade real-estate on Jethro with that finger choil and the inch of nothing in front of the choil, I don't see the point in choking up on a blade that big and it could do with out the false edge. Jethro has the better sheath system. Leroy is the better 1 knife option of these two.
I get it why about all you ( bushcraft) guys call a stick of firewood, a log , I suppose its dumbed down for all the guys that wear skinny jeans , ( their sisters pants ) as a child , I knew the difference between stove wood , stick of pulpwood , 8 ft fence post, saplings , saw logs and logs . Keep it simple for the ones with man buns and skinny jeans
+Adam Smith when chopping you don't rest your thumb on the jimping or put your finger in the choil. choking up on the knife is only for finer work so not sure what you mean.
Say Heah, I just ordered my Second Limited Edition from Ka-Bar. My First came with the BK-20 Bonduk Bowie, Its similar to the SCHF 45, but I think my Second Limited Edition is closer with the BK-29 Moses Bowie. The Moses Bowie is 10.624" blade and 1z/4" thick. It's a 1/4" shorter than my BK-20 Bundok Bowie, But the tip is stronger and l@@ks more like the SCHF 45 profile. Yeah, I like Bowies and Khkuris.,,.
did u see the bug on the wood and then when he split the wood it keeps walking like a boss.
love the Leroy design.
Is the next one gonna be named gibbs?
Plisken (EfNY/EfLA) would be a great name for a knife...
@@brianmccann666 The Schrade Snake 🐍!
Maybe "Bobbi Sue" or "Ellie Mae"?
Lol every time I see these knives' names (especially together) it reminds me of NCIS. Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
I just saw Bryan's (Survival On Purpose) video on the Jethro/SCHF48, and it looks really nice. I like the bowie shape of the Leroy/SCHF45 too.
+kpw528 It's got to be on purpose. Gibb's rule number 9: always carry a knife. :D
kyle_429 I thought I was the only one that thought of NCIS Leroy Jethro Gibbs,I had to go thru the comments..Lol
*Does it split wigs?*
I can't do the Jethro. I really like the 45 though. Going to resharpen it tonight after the kids go to bed (after polishing). I wish they'd do another version of the 45 in 1070.
+PREPAREDMIND101they look bad ass after you polished yours.
My issue with the Jethro is it feels too forward heavy with that short handle. I see a clear choil, but it's actually painful to try and put your hand in that position. I really wanted to like it.
I really really want the 45 in 1070 with a saber grind. Give it another number, but make it!
It sort of seems influenced by the Machax, which I really need to try.
PREPAREDMIND101 i want to try that one too and a few from ontario
+Living Survival since when did you start listening to dubstep? 😅😃
Just ordered the leroy
I saw a video once where the Leroy was going to chop through a 2 inch tree limb to see how fast it could do so. One chop into the test, the blade had a catastrophic failure. It broke into 2 pieces. I would be interested to know if Schrade has addressed this uncharacteristic error.
I noticed the Leroys nose kicked up more when chopping the vine on the stump , where the Jethro just landed and stayed.
I have been waiting for somebody to do a video with both of the CHOP BROTHERS. :-)
+Jarrid O'Bryan now you have it ;)
You're doin' the Lord's work, son. Keep on keepin' on.
+CO45422 thank you
You could put the Leroy on your left calf. That would allow you to draw it with your left hand.
Just orderd the Jethro cant wait to get it I love my Leroy bowie it throws amazingly
Great review as always! That's a killer combo from Schrade!
+Dan Hasson thanks
so basically the 48 is a better chopper while the 45 performs better in batoning. i am not surprised, the fact is that while the 48 is an amazing "low-price" tool is basically not a knife. the 45 is a bowie, it has the shape of a knife, i appreciate it more.
sorry for mistakes, i am not english.
+Kenar E. thansk for watching and the comment.
The handles looks huge? Or is just the video?
Nice review. I ordered my SCHF45 and I'm looking forward to testing it.
+Carlos de la Cruz you will enjoy it
Thanks Ben. I was wondering about that Jethro... nice to see you put it in test against the 45. Well done.
I don't know that I'd ever purchase either one. But that's my own preference at this time. I'm sure others may choose one of these as an option. A great job in showing the capabilities of both. Keep up the great work!
+Alan Williams i mostly carry a saw and then a smaller bushcraft sized blade myself. large choppers are just fun though :)
That's it. I want them both.
Great comparison. I have the 45 and was considering getting the 48, your vid may have convinced me. I liked the vine chopping tests the most for some reason.
+sameold77 those vines are some gnarly stuff and make good for chopping tests.
thanks for a nice through review, been wondering about these two and you help me make up my mind.
hOW DO YOU SHARPEN THESE KNIVES, ESPECIALLY THE JETRO?
was going to have a custom knife made for myself but the more I see of the Jethro the more it seems to fit my needs
+josh p GET IT!
Knife designers and end users are guilty with both of these designs, choils serve less purpose on large knives than smaller blades as it promotes an improper technique that facilitates wrist fatigue and danger due to the length and heft of the blade.

TurtleWolf Pack Ah I got ya. With bigger knives it is sometimes harder to hold it with the other hand and pounding it in a bit really helps the stability.
Can you use a fero rod for sparking tinder?
Did you say 8cr13mov? I believe the website says these are 3cr13mov.
+DrDeath70 the leroy is 8cr but the Jethro is 3cr, sorry about that.
I have them both and they both are awesome.
Really Nice Reviews Ben, but I have to ask the question - Jessica or Jethro?
Thanks Much!
+James White i'm a sucker for a big belly lmao
Leroy and Jethro... Rule#9.
Excellent video, by the way. Did you name them or did Schrade?
+A Keeper Of Odd Knowledge Schrade
Some very nice blades thanks for sharing atb John
+Turtle Bushcraft thx John
loved the video and subscribed! Thanks for the effort. One thing I noticed though.

In this large knife , chopping, category, have you ever reviewed the Schrade SCHF28?
Charles Larson nope but i can
+Living Survival That would be great. I would be interested to see how in your opinion it stacked up against the 45 and 48.
Charles Larson It is just a smaller version of the 45 right as far as I know.
I cut the belt loop off and made a new loop out of kydex & made a dangler loop. It worked alright but then I made a dangler leather sheath which is much quieter than the plastic sheath.
+hossler 2 NICE>
I'm wondering if you could take a heat gun to the opening of the sheaths to give it better retention.
i've done it with kydex. not sure on the plastic.
does it have good edge retention.
Loved the review. I'm looking forward to ordering both the SCHF45 and SCHF48. Both could be used in different applications.
+QPW311 both great options for large blades.
Thanks for the comparison Ben.
+Charles Collier thanks for checking in

is there a reason for why there is so much scrade the last few day's on YT
+so steve the last few days? they send knives to just about anyone. same with thrunite.
now that you mention it thrunite is also common al lot on youtube video's it will mss a sales stunt,
I'm just working on you tube , they won't send me;-)
maybe that is for the best, ive been very critical LOL
Finger choil on the 48 looks safer to use then the 45. 45 Being so close the the cutting edge. Maybe it was just camera angle. Good video as always Ben thanks for the review.
+Mitch Rivers it is a little closer on the 45
great review, would you know where i could get micarta scales for the schf 45?
+Mark Kalwa i know of a custom person in the UK.
cool thanks but anyone closer
I wonder if they're going to come out with Anthony, Ziva, and a Timothy as well. Little NCIS humor
i think shrade has solid designs they need to make some premium versions of there good performers i dont mind paying more for quality as long as its not rediculous
Or at least a Kydex sheath option! Crocodile Dundee would certainly call each "now that's a noif"!
If I had to pick one it would be Jethro.
I might actually get one for my kukri collection. I'd like them both a lot more if they weren't stainless.
Good review. I like these direct comparison/chop-off vids.
I think the SCHF48 is 3Cr13 though. Not 8Cr13.
Wow.. what a big part.. ha ;) thanks for share this video with us my friend!! Best Max
+Max Green (Umdenken im Kopf) ';0-

+LIVE2HUNT not sure.
Thanks for the excellent video. They are very reasonably priced over here so I ordered both. Thanks for the help deciding!
nice, enjoy.
Have the Leroy push the blade in the sheth with study pressure you will feel it lock in solid where it takes some forse to pull it back out !
for the price they are both winners! Shrade is awesome and I hope that Smith & Wesson don't ruin the quality since they just bought shrade!
I have a few bowie style blades . I think I'll go for the SCHF48. I like its recurve Kukri style.

+Grant Silliman, Jr. hell ya. i cut the part out where i was telling him to get off the log.
The steel is 3CR13
Leroy is the way to go IMO. And yes i own one so i guess i'm biased. Lol.
how does the Jethro compare to the ex-gurkha kukri house service no. 1
+Baby Feaster jethro is more comfortable and probably more durable.
thank you
why oh why not 1095??
+EarlyMist yeah but i dont mind the 8cr/3cr
Got two of each. Beefy and strong knife. Pity Jethro discontinued
One thing that I don't like is schrade knives always come with hollow grind.
+Galen Long haha, thanks for watching ;)
Hey Ben sorry brother you got googled again great test ! I had the jethro loved it great chopper take care brother I subbed again
Leroy SCHF45 looks cool
Leyroy...Jethro...Gibbs?
+YoungSinatra25 Yep, they got a little ricky.
Lol, good job with the names. More reviewers should get on the companies over the lefty thing. I'm not a lefty, but just from a business perspective, they pretty much alienate 10% of potential buyers.
+NewHampshire Bound yeah, would be nice.
awesome comparison man still like the Leroy tho. my Kershaw camp10 will be juuuuust fine as a side to em
+Josh Johnson I gotta try that camp 10 out.

+Alpha Core Elite Bug Out Channel entirely two different knives
Lefties using knifes make me nervous.
Why does he baton the leroy with the right hand and the jethro with the left band? And he is left handed. So tthis review is bad.😒😕😡

such good preforming blades seems like they both have good geometry if better steel was used they would be amazing
