You know, I forgot to acknowledge the education I received when watching this video. Hollow grind? All I knew was sharp, and dull! Not any more! Priceless, and thank you...
Honestly never got this knife with the intention of going camping. I bought it because this looked like the kind of knife that'll take an attacker's hand off. That being said, If all I had was this knife out in the woods, I would not despair. Your video helped show me why, so thanks dude. Also, my Grandpa's name is Leroy so that might have something to do with it.
Glad you like it. You can have mine if you want it. I love a good hollow grind, and never had a problem with one, until I got the Leroy. Delimbing a red oak branch with maybe a 1/2" thick branch at most, using snap cuts like I normally do while delimbing, I got 2 major chips in the blade. Deep ones, about half way into the edge bevel. I know red oak is some hard ass wood, but never had a problem like that before, with any other hollow grind blade, such as my Condor. The woods I frequent are full of red oaks, walnut trees, and beech trees, so hard to avoid. It's a shame, because I love the design..the TPE handles are fantastic, but 8cr13 is a poor choice for a heavy chopper. I don't even like it in a folder, so I should have known better...I blame myself for that reason. If your area is mostly pines and other soft woods, it's probably fine. Who knows..maybe I just got a lemon with a poor heat treat or something. It's not unheard of.
Why don't you give it a small convex grind to the bezel? It should perform much better on what you have to work with. It's definitely not ground for hard stuff.
@@DonnieBAllDay I may just try that, good idea, thanks. I do appreciate a nice convex grind..wish more makers did them instead of just the big money makers. Not everyone can afford to shell out a couple hundred or more for a knife. I do have some high end stuff, but most of my knives are well under the $200 mark. I appreciate makers like Bushmaster (made by United Cutlery) who put out budget priced knives in steels like 1095. I'm thinking of grabbing their Smatchet. I have both a folder and a bush craft style knife of theirs, in 1095, and they are excellent. so I don't doubt their big Smatchet is any less well built. A knife in 1095 under $40 bucks is hard to pass on. Were the Leroy in 1095, I'd like it so much I'd probably sleep with it, lol.
The 1095 isn't what makes them expensive. It's al in the heat treat and tempering. A poorly heat treated piece of 1095 is the same as a poorly treated 420 or AUS 8. I heard good things about the Smatchet though.
Finally a reviewer who knows a bowie blade is not an axe. People on youtube hack that Leroy like its a hammer into a tree and then go "uhh it broke in half!". Thanks for being smart.
Very happy with my Leroy too. I added a pouch with sharpener, ferro rod, and compass to the sheath just because the massive real estate was screaming for something to be added haha. Carry it on my old jail duty belt - too heavy for belt carry.
Hey Donnie I got to tell you man another freakin great review, I have been really cautious about getting this blade based of the fail videos I've seen, but you definitely educated me a tone with this video so much appreciated!
I'm certain that the ones out there failing are knock offs , i received mine and the edge is different...like one inch wider and paper thin...didn't felt right and of course it failed... I've been dealing with blades since i was a kid...like most of us...and i knew that blade was a joke.... welp re grind all that ridiculous paper thin edge....give it a new edge , took the handles off and re treated the steel again at 480°and then it did the job... i couldn't return it because i left it on the box for months...and just opened the box a week a go...never again... as soon as product arrives it'll be tested like i always do... is super cringy that a 18-24 dollar Mossy Oak blade performed a lot better...
Great review, Donnie. Regarding the Sheath's shortcomings, a crafty person could remove the belt loop and then make a leather or kydex frog for the sheath - making it ride higher, better grip from the sheath, and ambidextrous in one project... If Schrade would offer this in 1095 with a flat grind or better yet convex and an product-improved sheath, it'd be a winner! ETA: how's this blade holding up for everybody?

This is probably my favorite camp knife I own. I also own its little brother, griffin design schf9 which is great too. As long as you go with those bigger schrade blades and not the cheap walmart old timer blades schrade still makes some great knives. Personally, I would never buy a big knife with a hollow ground edge UNLESS it is a kitchen/butcher knife or hunting knife and perhaps a dedicated fighting knife meant to cut meat. Hollow ground knives EXCEL at cutting meat, they are probably the best overall edge for that purpose. I won't buy a big outdoors knife with an HG edge because I don't use them for primarily processing game. I use them for wood processing, trail and brush clearance, and shelter construction, etc. I don't see the point in getting this style of knife with a limiting edge that I have to baby or be concerned about all the time. Now, your observations about the edge and its proper place and use are SPOT ON. Your advice on how to use it without damaging it is also SPOT ON. I am very happy with my hunting knives with hollow edges and my kitchen knives, just never for a hard use "Survival Knife" which are what I am primarily interested in. I have broken/chipped out too many edges and tips with bigger hollow ground knives and choppers (and even a very expensive custom "survival/bushcraft" knife whose edge buckled when it hit a rhododendron branch with it trying to take it off, I mean, seriously, that was it for me with HG) and won't buy any more if I have to seriously tackle wood (let's not even address the stainless steel VS. Carbon steel for those purposes). As always brother, your insight and observations on these topics are greatly appreciated as is your clarity on the subject.

Ive never snapped a store-bought blade like that, and none of my Cold Steel bowies would do that, even tho Im no fan of their full-flat grinds... just sayin
Sometimes you can get a lemon abut most hollow grind breaks are user error. A chop with a hollow grind needs to be perfectly straight
In fact Donnie , Leroy is a French name from Normandie and which mean " the king " just for saying , good video though..
Yeah but naming another, Jethro, I don't they parle' Francais
@@DonnieBAllDay Wow ! You know some French words, very nice mate ;-)
Je ne parle pas Français bien. J'étudie avec le libre. Did I spell that all right?
@@DonnieBAllDay Yes not so bad mate . But you say libre while i think you mean livre, a book, but you know my English is not very good too .. Have a good day my friend .
@@jeffkodiac Yes. I meant book. Glad to have you around! haha
very good video
Thanks bro
Can khukri house build me that in tops 1095 quality?
If they have 1095. The difference is one is forged with a hammer by a man and the other is cut out by a machine from China
So many don't vuse a blade properly
Then they blame the blade
Tour buses😂great video. Thanks for the info I’m just learning. Tubes5150 sent me
I will show you the way! And the more of me you see, the less you'll know. Haha
Donnie B All Day 😂I’ll be watching! Saving some videos to watch later as well, kinda liking the condor undertaker, seems like a decent price too!
@@beckystiles1754 great blade for the money. Good for smaller hands too. Mine are monstrous!
Donnie B All Day sweet! is that one you would recommend or is there another one for the money you would suggest?
@@beckystiles1754 if you want a powerhouse Bowie for under 100, not much better
Sold!
Treat it right and it will return the favor
Banging away on a tour bus!! LOL

@@DonnieBAllDay I know it does, that's what cracked me up!!! LOL

That could be Rambo’s new knife lol
Im pretty sure he could lop off some limbs with it. Haha!
It would be a great machete to chop down some coconuts under the tropics..
Absolutely
translation?????
The king chops wood
For analytics and a like...lol
You and your big words! Haha
I see never saw a difference between a $40 knife and a $200 knife. All this hype you get you pay for is pure bullshit. If you want to chop wood well get an axe, a wedge and maul.
And just like that, someone speaks common sense
Dum duh dum Fsho Fsho
Foooo sho!
