I am SO GLAD you posted this video. You see, I bought the Leroy "before" I saw your video and I really, REALLY liked it, until... Then it went into the "oh well" drawer. Now, I can LOVE my Leroy again!!! Thank you!!!
Ive had a Shrade SCHF27 knife and I have used it for camping, chopping wood for a fire. i have also used it to clear out big oak branches of trees on property and sharp, it has stayed. I've had ZeRO issues with it. My wife and I loved this knife until it got Stolen from our Suburban. Today I am looking to invest in another Shrade and would not have it any other way, we trust this brand and we Love it. Like other people have commented you might have had a crack in the metal from manufacturing and that stress caused it to break. I really do appreciate a company that stands by their product, in sending you a replacement that says we stand behind a well made product.
I just got the Leroy about 2 months ago.....and I think it's a fantastic knife !! Have not put it through any extreme testing yet, but I think it will take any and all the tough uses that I will need it for. Thanks for the review
The thing with mass produced blades is that some bad ones can slip through. That's all. Doesn't make a company bad. Blade failed, you got sent a new one which is good customer service. Yes it would be a nightmare if that happened in the field but that's why we test before. Good update 👍
Look on Amazon. There are a lot more than a few bad ones slipping through with Schrade. p.s. I own some Schrade pocket knives that I have put through light/medium duty use for for almost 30 years, but I don’t think they make ‘em like they used to.
@@geektarded I am noticing more and more failures with this company. I think you are right about not making them like they used to. It seems to be about profit only anymore. Sad
I had bad luck with a big Kershaw blade that was much praised in the reviews. Broke of inside the handle at first chopping use. Since then I test every blade before I trust it. Thanks for the video.
@@gerardvanengelen9001 Really? I was just guessing. Ive had mine for years and have punished that thing with no issues besides it getting dull. Sorry to hear that. I hope they replaced it.
@@fit4knives882 Lamnia (Finland) replaced it after me sending pictures to them. As I said, just bad luck with mine. I think most owners are happy with the Camp 10.
Two things on the first night that broke you were chopping a branch that was a lot thicker plus you were striking it with the knife blade about 2 in from the handle instead of up by the tip like you are now
Breaks seems to be a common problem with their larger blades. Especially the ones made of stainless. I hope they fix these issues in the future. Thanks for sharing.
I have seen some reviews showing catastrophic failure and others no problem. I have several that appear to be built like tanks that should be good for anything you put them through. That said, if you can get a new one to replace the bad one and it works, then Schrade is a good go-to blade. You just want to know before you head out. Thanks!
Thanks for made this video. I enjoy the first one but when i saw what happened with the Leroy i getting shocked 😅. I was going to buy one but i decided not to do it in that time. Now I am going to take the chance buying one. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks for it.
They are great knives for the price for sure. It’s a knife you can beat up and not feel bad about. Work the edge or if you’ve totally wrecked it you can replace it cheap and easy.
If Schrade would have used a better steel and watched over the quality control of this knife, It could be a flagship knife for them. Make it out of 1075, 9cr18 MoV , or 5160 and charge $85. I would buy one. I really like the design and sheath. I just don’t like the steel.
Story time I first heard of the name Leroy about a year ago which was of someone that a friend of mine introduced me to who was a professional couch potato who's house was really dirty and messy since then that name has always been associated with couch potatoes in my mind
Thats why I have Busse strapped on my bags not schrade... I understand not everyone has n budged for that but maybe something like Conder would be a better choice?
I’ve Brocken a few blades over the years and and just put it down to bad luck or cheap blades. I don’t know if there’s a Belt Knife that can do everything without breaking the blade or the bank. I live in the UK so can’t carry a fixed blade in public and I don’t hunt or go into the wild anymore so it’s not as important to me but I would like to know which knife to grab when the poo hits the fan. Thanks brother 🔪 happy holidays 🎅🏻.
If I was on a budget I would grab a Kershaw Camp 10 for large tasks and a Morakniv Companion for the small stuff. For the money those blades are awesome. I will do a video on those 2. Thanks for the kind words and happy holidays.
@@fit4knives882 thanks buddy, I already have the Companion and yes it’s a keeper. At the moment I have a UK Army Knife as my main fixed blade. It’s basically a pry-bar with an edge but it does do what it says on the tin and for the price not a bad bit of steel. 🎅🏻👍.
That Leroy's a solid Bowie knife it's full tank quarter inch thick spine that's pretty darn thick I'm amazed how well it works it went through that stuff like butter that's great if you're going camping you can cut all the brush down with that limbs anything that's in your way that's wood it'll chop through it like it a lot John I'm stuck between the Ontario sp5 and the leroid right now 👍
And the price is right as well. I have been using this new Leroy for a while now and no failures yet. Man that Sp5 is a really great blade. As far as the steel goes the SP5 is the superior blade.
I am so grateful for your review....you may well end up saving me an eye. I used to see people say "always wear eye protection" and everyone laughed. But in a time where people claim their knives are heat treated properly, but they actually outsourced it to china, we dont know if we are getting a decent blades or semi heat treated pot metal. I own a Gucci knife that MIGHT be part of a batch of knives outsourced to a shady Chinese subcontractor, and I will only ever know that for a fact when it shatters in my face. So for what its worth, whenever I batton or chop wood with my knives, I assume the worst, wear eye protection, and I am grateful for your testing sir.
I've beat the living @#$% out of mine. That 1st one must have had a defect in it. I've chopped hickory, walnut, oak...I've barely even had to sharpen it. I do agree with the shock factor though. You really feel it on the hardwoods
Schrade stands behind their products so I will continue to be a customer, for the price and material used you can't beat them, I have more expensive knives that don't stand up to the schrade knives.
I think two things factored in to your chopper video. One the uncutable tube, and the hardwood chopper table created an idea break point for a not noticeable crack in the steel. Two the branch you used in the first video wasn't that sycamore? Super hard wood braced by the table created a break point too. I think your knife had a crack in the steel during the production run.
You're always going to get a dud on that rare occasion no matter what you buy. By in large though, I've been happier with my inexpensive Chinese made knives more than my U.S. or Japanese made knives that cost 8 to ten times the price. China has really improved their knives over the last few years IMO. I live in Canada so I can't get quite a few knives that my friends to the south can. Nice to see that they stand behind their products though.
I have the parang. Ive abused it for about three years. The silly rubber handle failed in the first six months. I dont get it. Other than a hollow grind on it no problems. I also have a 20.00 tr65 in Pakistan steel and after regrinding their attempts of shaping the blade Lol, it destroys 8 inch logs. Higher carbon blades will not survive in my house more than a year. Schrade is claiming 3cr13 on most model. Ps conduit will not hurt that blade, not even with copper wire in it the it. It is super duper soft steal even compared to 3 cr13 MOV if anything it'll tear the edge up a bit ,it should not break the blade.
Yes! Thank you for pointing out the conduit conspiracy. I got grilled for supposedly using it on that video (when I didn't). In my opinion the blade broke because of an imperfection in that particular blade. Out of thousands of knives sold by Schrade how many have broke? 100, 200, who knows. Point is knives break from time to time for many reasons. Even high end ones. Once the negative ball starts rolling it's hard to stop. I will never bad mouth this company. Hell, they sent me a new knife no questions asked. I'm good with that. Thank you for the input my friend.
I use a condor bushman parang a lot to split wood for kindling etc and it has been solid. I did add some tennis grip leather to the handle and it feels good in the hand.
The newer lighter grey has a different profile if you look at the grind on the bottom its 90 degrees on the bottom and the new is almost straight up and down. The top of the blade is thicker, and actual edge is also smaller.
I haven't heard that one before. So you are telling me you've never in your life chopped into a piece of wood or cut a small branch with a large knife? If not you make up about .005% of the male population Joe. Good for you bud.
Why do I have a bad feeling on this, I will soon know.😁 Well it did it, it was a slightly different test but it was still hard use👍. You're definitely not a Sally when it comes to testing stuff, that's for sure👍.
It was a bit different but still effective. I have used it a few times after this and it is still holding up. I need to throw it! That's a brutal test on blades. Thanks brother

The vibration in the table could have factored in to the failure. Maybe in conjunction with a weak piece of steel.
