Boss DD-8 Digital Delay Demo (in Stereo)

  • Boss DD-8 is the new compact digital delay pedal from Boss. Smaller and much simpler than the DD-500 and DD-200 delay pedals. It has a looper and 10 delay modes (Analog, Digital, Tape, Warm, Reverse, +Reverb, Shimmer, Modulated, Warp, Glitch).
    This video covers some of my favorite ways to use the DD-8, some looping (but not in the Loop mode), and a quick run through of all modes.
    Recorded in stereo so headphones are highly recommended!

    Man, I get looking at some really interesting, esoteric pedals from “boutique” brands, but I always end up coming back to Boss. They just know how to do a usable, well-rounded pedal.

    • @FadingFires
      @FadingFires 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I remember when I built my pedal board and was browsing all these different pedals and the flack people caught for making “BOSS boards” but BOSS pedals are very well built, they’re incredibly reliable, and the variety offered in each pedal is all up to snuff. The other pedals on the market do have their own “flavor” and things which are unique to them and make them worth owning, but when it comes to staples and “workhorse” applications, BOSS pedals have always been the best and most easily implemented.

    Perfect pedal demo, I really appreciate how you did focus on the pedal and its functions and not on fancy lighting or guitar-hero riffs and stuff like that. It is a nice going back to early, effective pedal demos vs the “character” presentation that is all the rage recently (I hope this makes sense).

    Great video. This pedal is so versatile, you can get just about as broad a range of delay tones as you can imagine. Stereo ins and outs means it works on keys too, the chorus at 8:21 sounds great on a Rhodes preset. You can do the same thing with +RV, i.e. take the delays right down and get a usable reverb.

    Honestly, I passed this up several times because I could see it didn't show the guitar being played. According to all the other videos I've seen, it was confusing trying to separate what they were actually playing with what was the delay. To me, seeing the guitar seemed to help me distinguish the difference. However, I am glad that I finally watched it because you simplified it in such a way that it is easy to make that distinction. Also, the script just makes it so clear. Excellent video in my opinion. Subscribed

      Thanks!
      I agree that sometimes with certain pedals it’s hard to understand what the pedal is doing if you can’t see the guitar player. I always try to keep everything simple (not that I’m holding back the virtuoso in me!) and it works fine, in my opinion.

      I have a DD8 coming tomorrow. The very first effect in the video with the +RV and reverb, this is one of the effects I am looking to create. I noticed you strummed right at the beginning before you engaged the pedal. Then notated you were using your volume nob. Were you strumming one string at a time while using the nob and adding each string to the mix? Any explanation you can give to that first effect would be very helpful to me.

    • @DoNoise
      @DoNoise  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m playing notes or chords and then turning up the volume. Basic volume swell with the volume knob on my guitar. The feedback knob on the pedal is set to maximum so it keeps repeating those swells, creating a drone.

    Amazing video, thanks!
    I bought the pedal last week and I din't knew how much I could have get out of it! I mean, how to achieve the chorus FX is a really appreciated tip!
    Other than that, I can't overcome the fact that the pedal accepts a stereo input (wanted to use it to record some outer footages coming from the PC headphones jack) but it doesn't sum it and play it in real time if using the mono output from the pedal.
    It does it instead, if using the stereo out, but you lose half of the volume from the mono input instrument...
    That's the only downside to this pedal for me right now!

    Good video. I have the dd-7.
    Oh, but you forgot to add one thing. There's something called a hot mix. What you do is you play a chord with a delay going on and then change your feedback and your time knobs live while the sound is still playing out of the amplifier. You will end up with some Radiohead like sounds. They were actually known for doing some hot mixing on some of their CDs in the past before they had access to more advanced technology.

    Presently my favorite is TC Nova Delay because of BPM and precise ms. readout. I use the 3 preset setting, giving me 1/4, dotted eights, and 1/4 + dotted eights. that's all the settings I need, and it's quick enough to work live, without adding confusion ;-) Also you can do a 100% wet signal, dialing the mixknob, which I use on a pedalboard.

    The biggest oversight by Boss on the DD-8, is that there is no sub-division control that the user can get to quickly. If I wanted to go from a 1/4 note delay to a dotted eighth in a live situation between songs, it's impossible to do quickly. You have to actually unplug the unit and press certain buttons to get there when you plug it back in.

I contacted the company to help me but they just seem to lose interest?? thought they would offer to fix it for me?? so after frustration! I decided to go back to Boss! Bought a DM-2w and now ordered a DD-8! Thank you!
      DD-8 would certainly be a good delay pedal for a small rig.
      I wouldn't get the DD-8 to replace a reverb pedal because you don't have much control over reverb and you can't dial out the delay if you just want reverb. +RV and SHIM modes sound good but they are very basic and they just complement the delay rather than being effects on their own.

    Does this pedal still have ping-pong panning stereo sound if both inputs are plugged? As I know older DD-7 starting work as dial mono delay in that case.

    I just bought a EHX Next Step Expression pedal to go with my DD8, but I can't seem to make it do anything.
    Any ideas out there?

      Keep the DD3. And team up with DD8. Use it together for ultimate delay cloud.

    Hi great video!!! Could you explain the rev infinate loop you got at 11minutes? How did you record the intial input signsl if you only have input a to output b...this would be great feature for me. Cheers Rob

      #W_O_D_W_O connecting input a and output b only changes the maximum delay time available. The pedals still functions as normal. I have the trails on so the repeats keep going when I turn the pedal off. What I play when the pedal is on is repeated infinitely (because the feedback is set to maximum) and when I turn off the pedal, I can play on top of it.

    This might finally replace my DL-4.

    Why does it say "CHECK" next to the LED? What do we check and why?

    Great vid, what kind of cable is that coming out the output? And does it just plug into one amp?

      Thanks!
      Those are EBS Flat patch cables. The pedal is in the fx loop of Line 6 HX Stomp.

    Great demo. I have the dd-8 and It is excellent delay pedal, how do I switch to the pingpong stereo option? i can get the wide stereo only.

      Thanks!
      It was something weird that included plugging a cable to a certain jack and turning the mode switch to something. It is in the manual.

    Wait what? Shimmer on the delay.. much better than the shimmer on the reverb! That's something new!

      420XD AKA GreenMash thank you!
      I'm using a Charvel DC-2 (with passive Seymour Duncan pickups) and Line 6 HX Stomp as the amp, cab, and interface.

    They should make a bucket bridage version and call it the BB-8

    Does the self oscillation in analoge mode sound like a proper analoge delay pedal? Or does it still keep the digital delay oscillation sound?

    • @DoNoise
      @DoNoise  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sounds like analog. High feedback/oscillation sounds really change depending on the mode (compare the tape and reverse in the video for example).
