I recall a dream that I had some time ago. My father-in-law had passed a few years earlier. He worked as an attorney but was a judge when we first met. We got along well enough. I would like to think it was because Mexican culture and Creole culture aren't all that different and we were both veterans of the Army. He served with Special Forces in Vietnam. I was just your run-of-the-mill infantryman. Anyway, I always felt like I was falling short of his expectations. Not for anything he said or did. It was that he managed to accomplish so much while I was relatively still living in the margins.
In my dream, we are both in his office and I'm telling him about how tough it is trying to live up to his example. His response was, you don't need to do what I did, just add to it. Meaning find a way to be great in your own way. Currently, I'm in what is hopefully the last year of a Ph.D. program. I'm putting the finishing touches on my research proposal. I still have to submit it, defend it, conduct the research, and write a dissertation. I am still planning on going to Law School after I complete my Ph.D. I want to focus on either Business Law, business, or Constitutional Law.
Side note I passed my black belt exam.
