Wow! It’s December already and that means an advent calendar to count down!
I noticed back in September that UpCrate was launching an advent calendar and I had to dive right onto that!
Spoiler alert I’ll be opening all of the doors and showing you what’s inside the UpCrate advent 2022!
If you have this calendar and don’t want to see what’s inside then I’d advise watching once you have opened yours!
The cost for this calendar was €74 with €16 postage €90 total and about £81 (I say £90 incorrectly on the video)

note - it was a task and a half to work out how much each item was priced and it got a little complicated for my brain to keep switching from £'s to €'s so I'll leave a link to the channel I watched where they also unbox and calculate. so be sure to watch them afterwards too.

What an eclectic box! I love the paper surfaces but the rest is a bit random to be honest. There are too many paintbrushes and the colours included are extremely odd. I think money wise it was worth it but if you got different colours it might work better or not at all. Weird that there was nothing to scratch the boards with. I think I would have preferred it to be more curated and less "Let's just chuck in what we have left!" I was going to get this but chose to spend my birthday money on bujo supplies instead! And I am 100% confident I made the right choice. Great video as always Katy :)
Thank you Jay F ♥️ yes the paper and surfaces are fab! I don't mind there being a good amount of paint brushes. But the paint supplies were as you say odd colours and didn't really match the brushes provided. There were a lot of nice items, it was all a bit too random though. A lot of items will need additional purchases to be able to use them which is a bit annoying. I think it hits the money value, but the items inside do feel like they have just thrown in some random bits and bobs. I don't mean the more novelty items btw, the mismatched stuff does just seem like it's been used to bump up the value.
I don't have this box but it doesn't seem to have been very well thought out. It does give the impression that they've simply included supplies that they've had left over from previous boxes and need to get rid of. Including the scratch boards without the tools necessary to use them is particularly silly - especially if someone's not an existing Upcrate subscriber so won't have received the relevant box. The packaging concept is novel though.
Thank you DalekWidow ♥️ I'm not sure if it's a good box for existing subscribers or not. The addition of a previous box must be great if you're not a subscriber, but there's a lot of stuff in there where having previous boxes would be useful too - the scratch boards like you say. The oil paints seem really out of place without having any good surfaces to use them on. However I was happy with the surfaces provided for general use and there were a good few bits and bobs that I'll use too.
I think keeping all of the boxes the same for everyone, not adding a previous box and maybe the inclusion of a magazine featuring previous featured artists with hints and tips to use the supplies would have been more ideal.
This seems like a fun thing to open for someone who wanted to get upcrate but couldn’t afford to get a monthly subscription. Or even a gift for someone.
I think they did a good job. Would have been nice to have some strings on the little boxes. Maybe to hang on the tree 🤷♀️
I’m not gonna lie I would probably invest in this next year if I can purchase before they sell out.
I miss my upcrate subscription😢, it’s a nice alternative tho , seems like the value is there.
I remember when they put little gimmicky items in the boxes 😊👏 it was always weird/fun to see what the gimmick was every month 🥰

Thank you Creative Phenomenon Art ♥️ it was fun opening those cute little parcels and having an arty surprise in each one. I loved all of the paper and surfaces in there, the brushes chefs kiss! And the more novelty items would be fun too. I think some of the supplies could have been better thought out, like the oil paints and only having 2 with no traditionally used surfaces. I think the addition of a previous box was a bit iffy, especially if you have been a long time subscriber. I do think overall it was worth the money. I just think a couple of set projects (without having to buy additional supplies to be able to use what we got) would have been better and a little magazine with hints and tips about the supplies.

@@KatyRylesArt my last box was September 2021 I thought I had re-subscribed (and this was when they were revamping their website) my info got lost in the confusion and With the shipping at that time being a nightmare I just decided I would take a break.
Yes a magazine with tips would have been cool.
Did seem like a fun box, but I could immediately tell the problem you mentioned that some of these supplies will need additional materials. A super curated advent calendar would have been amazing.
Thank you turnyfoo ♥️ technically lots of good stuff and hits the value for money. But yes! I agree it could have been curated a lot better. Keeping it all uniform for everyone and chucking a magazine in there would have been good too. I'm probably not going to invest in oil painting supplies for the time being, which means they will be sitting for a while 🙃
I don’t know for sure but I think this box is so random because Upcrate was cleaning out their storage and just used old stock that they needed to get rid of
Thank you Pink Butterfly ♥️ yeah I kind feel that way with some of the items. The oil paints are a good example. The more novelty supplies I don't mind so much as I can use them without additional purchasing, sketchbooks, brushes and other surfaces I was happy with.
If it was curated a little more considerately it could have been great. But it was ok and I was happy with the things I liked.
But I was miffed about having a past box in there too. 😭

Thank you Mary ❤️ I know, I was lucky to have been able to get hold of one. I do have mixed feelings still. I'm mostly happy with what was in there, it kinda just doesn't all work together. Especially the oils, it means more money will need to be spent to use them. It just didn't quite feel complete.
thanks for unboxing the Advent calendar for us! I missed out because I didn't order it pronto when the email arrived... ah well. I think, overall it looks like a collection of things. Definitely nice surfaces and brushes, and a couple of media in there I'd loved to have tried. thanks again for sharing :)
Thank you Sonya ❤️ it really was a mad dash to order it and It sold out so quickly. Lol! Yes it is a collection of things. Some really nice supplies and surfaces. I think having a previous box was a little disappointing and I imagine a few existing subscribers may feel the same. Some items, the oils for example, I feel will need additional purchases to be able to use them properly. Worth the money? Yes for the pricing of the items. Maybe could have been curated a lot better. A magazine would have been nice too 😁
Just made it in time. I didn't even know Upcrate had this. Maybe they should call it something else since it was just a large amount of supplies.
Thank you Weblight Dreams ❤️ it sold out really quickly so I was lucky to get one. I think a lot of the stuff was quite good. The sketchbooks and surfaces are great, nice selection of brushes and pencils, tools and the ink was great too. I'm puzzled with the oil paints though, not massively compatible with this box alone. I didn't mind too much with the novelty bits and bobs either.
I probably won't pick one up next year because of how random this year was. I hope if they do one next year though they'll add a magazine perhaps featuring the cover artists of the year as well as a few hints and tips for using the supplies. It would be more beginner friendly. I also think that they should keep everything the same in the boxes too . There are only a few variations I've seen, but I believe it should be the same none the less. Oh and no previous boxes as the chances are we've probably already had it before lol
I am so SO happy that Upcrate did this, so cool. However, I have serious FOMO, I didn’t even know they where selling. Next year😂 I’ll hop on it!! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Jude ❤️ it was a bit of a surprise when I saw someone mention it on the scrawlrbox community Facebook page. I saw that before I got the email lol. From what I gather, it sold out really quickly and I was lucky to secure one. Overall I'm happy with most of what was in there. I'm a bit miffed that a previous box was used in there and there have been variations with some of the items that other artists have received. The oil paints were a bit random as there are no really suitable surfaces to use them on. The paper/surfaces, brushes, pastels, pencils and novelty items were good though and will get some use. I think it perhaps lacked a little planning as to what materials would work together or not. I'll try to remember next to pop it on my community tab if they make another one 😁
@@KatyRylesArt great points, yes super strange choice to recycle past boxes, but I kinda get it. Super random but the art supplies were 1000% better than what else is out there. …Arteza (which is really hard to get in Canada). The world needs a good Art advent cake. Now, I assume that in the coming years Upcrate will perfect this, as they certainly did with their box, the first couple were a jumbled mess. … but now the box is pretty solid. So as random as the supplies were, at least they’re of great quality and you can certainly pair them with some of your other supplies!!✨❤️🎄
I decided to open all of my own. I received two number 3 boxes (bamboo thingy) for some reason 🤷🏼♀️ And in the final box I did not get the Sakura black sketchbook, and instead had some Bristol board, again 🤷🏼♀️ The only other difference was in the ink colour. I received sunshine yellow which sadly I have already. Would have enjoyed the silver you received. It was strange that all paint colours were the same, just not the ink. All in all, I wouldn’t do it again as I too was a little miffed about receiving many things I’d already had in boxes this year. Could have been better thought out. Thanks for your video
Thank you Anita ❤️ two bamboo pens? Nice! I hope you weren't missing anything in its place. Bristol board? That's different from the others I've seen too 🤔 I kinda feel the same as you. I think from a monetary point of view, yes it hits the value. I think perhaps from a usability and compatibility pov it maybe missed the mark. The oils seemed a little out of place without any canvas or canvas board. I didn't mind so much the smaller novelty items like the felt pens and highlighter etc. But there's technically a lot of stuff that would require purchasing additional supplies to be able to use, and after spending quite a bit already I'm probably not going to invest further for the time being. I think a magazine would have been a nice addition and keeping all of the supplies the same for everyone would have been good too. Maybe not including a previous box as a lot of subscribers more than likely have already had it 🤷♀️
@@KatyRylesArt Couldn't agree more with you Katy. I have actually just cancelled my subscription. I think that future boxes are perhaps only going to get worse.
Oh no! i spaced out and didn't realize you weren't just doing day 1, so I found out day 2!! 😅 Oh well, not a big deal, I'll watch when the month is over. I thought day 1 was really good actually, (and I'm totally OK with day 2 lol.

I trhink the price for art advent calendars are quite high. Wouldn't buy that, as you never know whats inside. Might sound mean, but it kinda looks like they put leftovers inside they didn't sell off. Might be interesting for those who are not regular subscribers, but who receives Upcrate boxes like you do for ages, will end up with duplicate materials (not necessarily faves). Of course, you can never have enough sketchbooks 😛
Thank you Crafting Lady ❤️ I do believe it fulfills the monetary value. But yes it does feel like they have needed to clear some space and added them to the calendar. I'm happy with the surfaces, brushes and more novelty items. But the previous box? Hmmm not really happy about having a box I've already had. Oil paints without proper oil brushes or surfaces weren't a hit for me either.
You are completely right about not having enough sketchbooks though.
Like you I have opened my Advent Calendar box all in one go as No 1 had already come out of its box and I was extremely disappointed to receive OIL PAINT! Upcrate have NOT designed these materials to work together. We have received a Japanese brush pen BUT no tiny block of Sumi ink. I had yellow ink, you had gold ink, neither of which will work with the other materials! The VALUE is OK, I like the little sketchbooks and the scratch-boards but the individual supplies do not work well together

A sumi block would have worked well with the bamboo pen too. I feel like the monetary value is there. But the mismatched supplies and using a previous box ( which let's face it we've more than likely already had, especially long term subscribers)
I did love the surfaces and the paint brushes and the novelty items were fun. It just lacked a bit of thought for the more arty supplies. I'm going to have to make additional purchases to be able to utilize them properly 😅
@@KatyRylesArt Perhaps that was the ploy of Upcrate but it hasn’t worked for me as I have decided to cancel my subscription
