I worked for Luxottica. The quality of these glasses is no better than what youd find at the dollar store. About once every 3 months, we would fill a dumpster with perfectly good glasses, some still in cases. They wouldnt sell them at a marked down price. They trashed them to get money for them. And the managers are garbage. I was fired for getting injured at work. They dont give a rats ass about their employees.
The section of this segment concerning Ray-Ban could be expanded to a full segment of its own. Look at what Luxottica did to Ray-Ban, a once high-quality American brand. Luxottica swooped in, cannibalized the brand and cheapened it while jacking up the price. How do I know? I have a pair of Ray-Ban Wayfarers from 1984 that I got in high school, and I still wear them today-and they look brand new. Not only the is the frame high quality zyl, but they have genuine Bausch & Lomb UV lenses that are glass, not plastic. They also-and this is crucial for any quality glasses-have heavy duty seven barrel hinges that are riveted, not glued on. Most Luxottica frames are cheap plastic, both the frames and the lenses, and they use cheap plastic spring hinges that are cheap to manufactuer but break very easily and don't last long. If we only lived in a just society with an FTC that had the power to break up mafiosi operations like Luxottica, the US consumer would get a fair deal on eyeglasses.

After working for LensCrafters for a few years. It was insane to see the price jumps. Customers spent 1000s of dollars with their flex-spending accounts for a couple or a few pares of glasses.
I have 97 Ray bans SPOTLESS and they were from France and made by Bausch and Lomb. Cant get these babies anymore. Theyre FANTASTIC.
I own about 30 pairs of sunglasses and prescription glasses. The best built and best optics are the Maui Jim sunglasses, hands down. Now owned by Kering Eyewear.
100% Agree! And Maui Jim not owned by Luxottica, as you say owned by Kering Eyeware. One way to avoid the Luxottica monopoly.
I'd also recommend Shuron, which is a made in the USA brand. Perhaps too traditional for some people, but they do have quality zyl, will install glass lenses, and most important of all they use riveted barrel hinges, not those awful cheap spring hinges that break constantly.
Ah yes, Maui Jim, the company that definitely didn’t totally rip off the Ray-Ban logo and its placement on their lenses...

The monopoly is being slowly broken here in London at least, where there are several independent outlets who manufacture their own frames to a higher standard & lower price than branded Luxottica frames.They are not hard to find online, however they have nowhere near the marketing muscle of the big fashion brands.

I bought Coach eyeglasses at Lenscrafters for almost $500 thinking they would be more durable. The side broke within a month and they are scratched even after paying extra for anti scratch. Took them to the store and the guy told me too bad, nothing they can do. Went to another lady in the store and she told me about sending them to "Luxottica" but that people didn't know about or use that option much and the first guy had never heard of it. They did fix the side only quickly, but I will never buy from Lenscrafters again. Ones I've bought from Walmart are still going strong with zero scratches and held up much better.
That’s because they aren’t “anti-scratch” the correct term is scratch resistant. If someone is using the word anti-scratch they are rookie Opticians.

Prices are set by the customer, you can buy Luxottica glasses for cheap if you want to, but guess what, people prefer to buy the more expensive ones, especially women. The same can be said for shoes and clothes.

Iam from India where the per capita income is 2,000$ and a pair glasses with lens for my specs was 50$ after conversion I bought it from RayBan . My parents are rich enough to afford that but still why ?

I mean, Chanel glasses would be expensive regardless of who manufactures them, and many luxury brands exploit cheap labour. Luxottica is a solid firm which treats their employees very well, they just simply managed to become a monopoly the same way American firms dominate most markets.

They are not a monopoly because they imitate, but because they both manufacture and sell these glasses since they bought retailing chains. It cannot be an imitation because, for example, Chanel designs the glasses and pays Luxottica to manufacture these goods, retaining an agreed share of the profits. Imitation, fully legal, is more what Zara and H&M do by studying fashion trends and designing their own clothes accordingly.

Warby Parker has "frames made in china and the lens lab is either in China or Korea". I bought identical frames online and paid $5.99 plus $12.00 for the lenses.. Warby Parker is also a ripoff...
I moved to buying online and haven't looked back. The eyeglass biz is a scam when buying these brands in a store. The coatings cost is also a scam. I've gone from paying over $600 for a pair of glasses to $89. They actually hold up better, the expensive lenses scratched easily and these don't, and I get complements just the same. Never going back to the ripoff folks.

I'd like to say there's no difference between the cheap glasses and the more expensive ones, but I've worn glasses almost my entire life and I've noticed that the more expensive frames are way more durable and have a "heavier", more sturdy feel. The lenses (prescription) also don't scratch as easily and if they're tinted, the tint just seems more even. They're still way over priced, but they are higher quality.

I have never seen an interviewer so seemingly oblivious to the concept of licensing . No doubt she would be shocked to see how many designer fragrances are made at the same company thru licenses. Bedding, furniture, eyeware, fragrances, housewares...ready to wear , different price point auxiliary clothing labels... all licenses . Frequently the only product a name design house actually makes is the premium clothing. An ad for the brand. Everything else is a license with varying degrees of input and control. Licensing the name is the cash cow.
She is also unaware of the concepts of brand value and of brand equity. And the difference between being a manufacturer and being a brand. Like she is very ignorant.

You can get some good discounts at sunglass hut...for instance I bought a pair of TIFFANY sunglasses that was last year model they were 465.00 I bought them for 105.99 so my point is you do not have to pay full price.

It's practically a monopoly, that's the problem. No one cares that they are successful. Of course being successful is the dream. Being a monopoly & consolidating an entire market ISN'T. Because it means consumers have no where else to go, so that monopoly can take advantage with nothing stopping them. Same with a totalitarian government, it's not okay to have complete control so that citizens/consumers are pigeonholed into whatever that govt/organization decides. Unless you wouldn't mind living in north Korea... Yeah, it's hyperbolic, but it gets the point across just the same. The people should have options, agency in their decisions. But if a company owns the entire market, then you as a consumer are at the complete whim of whatever the hell that company decides.

Private companies make glasses using federal bureau of prison inmates, pay them 50 cents an hour, then sell them back to the feds for top dollar. They also have unicorp in prison and they do the same thing with office furniture. A chair costs about 50 to make then they sell them back to the feds for 1200.00

Amazon doesn't set the prices and has competition. If I want to buy a stuffed bear, I can go to Amazon or my local toy store or Walmart or any other companies. Walmart doesn't have an 80% market share, nor does Amazon.
Evan Roden your missing the point, this is the maximum a company can obtain in a capitalistic reality, where they control the market from production to retail. There is nothing more after that. This is the max a company can do. Microsoft did a good job at it, but if you really wanted you could by a Mac or Linux? Not for it/not against it but that’s the essence.
Brewery’s in the UK and Holland do the same thing. Over the years they bought a majority of the pubs and inns. They would lease the pub on the condition that all beverages and beer would be supplied by the brewery and sister companies.

Just bought a pair of Versace glasses today! It’s the way they look and how they make us feel. So I paid for the bold and bling preferred. Good thing I usually get min of 5 years out of everyday glasses.
But they could also look and make you feel but still have everyday competitors that offer a good quality if this bond villain didn't take them all. It's the same thing as Mercedes owing all car brands and only selling luxury cars and entry cars at luxury prices.

If the man from Luxottica had been a US American, he would have been celebrated as another praiseworthy example, a champion of a self-made man.
