    I don’t understand all the hate or criticism towards Luxotica. What’s the reason? What does it have to do with the fact that we as customers can easily choose what we want to buy and nobody will force us? And plus the quality of Persol for example is impeccable. I owe quite a few pairs and i love everything about them. What do I care if they’re owned by Luxotica , Adidas or Mercedes?

      Exactly definitely not a monopoly and still quality! Volkswagen ones of course

      Because in the USA they also own or apart of many of the eyeglass insurances and own several of the “independent” eyeglass stores. They are a monopoly or operate like a monopoly.

    The thing that annoys me about most expensive sunglasses (except Persol) is that they all have "rigid" temples so you really have to make sure you buy the right size. On the other side, you can buy cheap frames for prescription lenses that have little springs where temples connect to the frames which makes them really comfortable.

    Thanks for finally making this video it has almost 10 million views and spread so much miss information.
    Once again you have set the record straight.
    In summary Yes they mark up brands like, Chanel , Burberry, Tiffany are all because they don't own them and have to pay those other companies royalties sunglasses making them cost way more then Ray Bans.
    But there fully owned brands like Persol and Ray-Ban are actually priced really well and those companys still have a good soul and brand distintion
    like persol are still made in the same factory they were when they were bought by lux back in 1992

    I'm looking for a pair of single vision polarized reader sunglasses (1.25) that wrap for fishing sports. They don't seem to exist unless I go through an optometry store and then they want to gouge me for several hundreds of dollars. What gives? I can get polarized sunglasses with bifocals, I can get unpolarized reader sunglasses or just about any other combination but it's a **NO GO** on single vision polarized readers. HELP!!!

    Well, the CEO sounds like a mob boss "oakley decided it was better to be part of the family" is why he is successful. But... he is still making good products. And I don't see anything wrong with charging for name brand gear, BUT, glasses need to be affordable so that poor people can still see. Aside from that, if you have 2k for glasses then buy what you want

    I currently have Burberry eyeglasses that I got a few years ago, & these have probably lasted me the longest amount of time since I got them back in 2017 or 2018 probably, or maybe even before that. They've proved to be durable with my usage. But I also have been wearing my contacts more often now so I wear my glasses less

    If two brands are making sunglasses with same specs i would go for the cheaper one just cuz of the practicality of the sunglasses.
    And also i love independent brands especially RE and Moscot cuz they make one of the best pairs with reasonable prices........and also by seeing Randolph's long lasting reliability. I would definitely buy a Randolph pair someday.

    You can still buy glasses (with prescription lenses) for $50 or less online. There's even options under $10! However, if you choose the cheap, online route. you run the risk of getting low quality glasses with lenses that are so bad, they hurt your eyes, and frames so bad they break within a week. On the other hand, you may get lucky and wind up with glasses just as good as those that sell for north of $100. This could be a good option for a backup pair though.

    My eyeglasses from lenscrafters are perfect. The prescription polarized sunglasses not so much, but they'll get them right eventually. Already returned the first pair and the 2nd one is going to go back too. 3rd time lucky. Either way, everyone there was nice to me
    Edit (the polarization is off and splotchy)

    4:07 Keep in mind that the eight year longevity is only for plano nonprescription lenses. Those who wear prescription glasses generally get a new lens prescription and new glasses every two or three years. But still, prescription glasses tend to be worn all the time or nearly all the time, so for people who wear them, 2 or 3 years of use is similar to 8 years of using plano sunglasses in terms of total hours worn.

  • @vijeeshmenon1982
    @vijeeshmenon1982 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I cannot completely agree or disagree with her. I mean she is right in saying that it's just a piece of glass screwed together with plastic and that doesn't justify the price since there is no more technology behind it.
    But then, Eyewears are luxury items. Just like clothes, shoes, bags, cosmetics, wallets, wrist watches, chains, hats, caps and every other non essential commodity that you can think of. If you don't like the pricing you can simply choose to not buy them. It's not a crime that they name their price.
    There are essential life saving drugs and surgeries that are priced exorbitantly making them inaccessible to many people who are in need for it. That should be spoken against, not designer brands who are straight forwardly into money making business.

    • @ShadeReview
      @ShadeReview  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ShadeReview Not completely. Big conglomerate made frames are nowhere near what independant companies make quality or detail wise. Hell, Safilo got caught a few years back making their Gucci frames in China but stamping made in Italy on them. There are much better deals/value to be had when you buy independant because most of these companies go for the nicer materials like acetate, titanium and horn over cheaper options like standard polycarbonate, nylon and stainless steel. I would love to see conglomerates step up the quality but currently they have no reason to. Personally when I go eyewear shopping, I only buy from independant brands that either manufacture their products in their home country or Japan or sometimes Italy.

      @@pmwaffle9348 I have glasses that I got made from a local shop near by in 1998. Metal frames with a design embossed on to it, photochrome glass lenses and spring hinges. I paid 4$ (today's value) for it and I still have them. Not worn extensively but still functioning well.

    • @scientchahming5
      @scientchahming5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glasses are not necessarily luxuries, as there's people who need glasses to see. That said, even those who need glasses don't have to go for the pricey luxury brands, as there's plenty of generic brands that average $60 - $120, like those at Wal-Mart Optical.

      I watched the video completely before posting. Even if said using a bunch of casual sounding comments, the bias is clearly felt, and the attempts at justification is evident (hence, apologist). In this industry, the shocking cost of designer brand pieces are used to trick customers into thinking that the overpriced "affordable" models are acceptable. This is a commonly used marketing trick, which is further helped by a few brands occupying majority market share.

I wanna see new companies beying born and selling for less and less to take chunk of the pie.(Only product that 100% stylish and 100% needs to fit is the reason? No. Its same as a hat, headphones and many other products that u can wear 14hours a day. U can be even of with sizing a bit like headphones and it still wouldnt matter. )

    Genuine ray bans new wayfarers can be purchased from independent merchants for $99, however the RRP for new wayfarers is over $190 ? at $99 a profit is still being made, thus consumers are being over charged, as far as the cost of production goes. obviously consumers are paying for the brand names and not the cost of manufacturing, which is what this documentary is about. shade review I don't like you.
