Been xo since 2011 and I’ve followed everything he’s done since then and the idol is def a stain in his legacy bc of how bad it is as a show I don’t even have a problem with the content it’s just a bad show. The cinematography and soundtrack is top notch though.

for those into sports i kind of view the idol as the artistic equivalent of urban meyer coaching the jaguars. a legend in one field jumps over to an adjacent-but-different field and fails so dramatically that it calls his entire previous legacy into question
Really wish The Weeknd’s only involvement in this show was the soundtrack. The soundtrack expresses his ideas for the show and executes them better than the show. The Weeknd knows how to create incredible stories and worlds with his music and short films, and he can play a character very well on both. But writing and show isn’t for him.
Amazing analysis. Really enjoyed how you looked at it critically and didn't just ride the hate train like everyone else. This show could've used a little more time in the writer's room. Finale was my least favorite part but there is a lot of good here that I liked.
I’ll be honest, the writing of this show is terrible and it barely goes anywhere for the whole season and the sex scenes are very cringe but I didn’t actually hate it because the cinematography was great and the acting was quite good including the Weeknd other than in the sex scenes he has and he’s someone who I’d like to see in something else as an actor and I’m looking forward to seeing his movie that’s coming out next year with Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in it to see how he fares with a presumably better script.
The Weeknd should stick to making music. I could barely make it through the first episode and had no desire to watch the remaining four. Sam Levinson needs professional help and to re-read screenwriting books.
The show COULD have been good It had the ingredients for an amazing show, great actors, and despite their issues Abel and Sam can be really good story tellers. But unfortunately, that wasnt the case. Abel is a terrible actor and NEEDED an acting coach. Sam is a control freak of a writer and NEEDED a writers room (Im shocked he didnt learn his lesson from Euphoria S2). This show was an obvious self insert vanity project for the weeknd. Not just with Tedros being based off of Abel, but Jocelyn also being heavilly based off of Bella Hadid and Selena Gomez. And my biggest issue, they try to excuse their poorly written show as "intentional" or "revolutionary." No it is not, just own the fact that you made a bad show. Even if 10 years from now people say the show is revolutionary, it doesnt have a strong enough diehard audience to continue its legacy. Plus it doesnt help that HBO never approved for season 2 but for some weird reason they did for Velma.

I feel bad for weeknd because if you actually listen to a lot of his music this character would fit him perfectly but because the writing is so bad and he didn't have someone coaching him through the scenes since he is only a singer he comes off horrible and very OneNote. This is why the show to me is horrible because it had potential.

That said it was a mildly entertaining season for its short run but was definitely a mess. There were a couple of things especially towards the end that were kind of confusing to me. I would check out season 2 if it ever comes though.

I'm still a fan of his music but this is a huge stain on his legacy.
It doesn’t impact his legacy for anyone except chronically online people. Most of us will just forget about this show. I watched every episode and I already am forgetting it existed

The Idol is a surreal story about how fame corrupts people which is exactly what The Weeknd has been making music about since his mixtapes. Fine if it’s not your thing, but anyone who sees it as a failure doesn’t really get him as an artist. And to everyone who is like “ya I like the soundtrack but the show sucks” … the songs are all directly related to the content of the show. You sound ridiculous 🙄

It surely will. It has Robert Eggers directing and Barry Keoghan involved two who are some of the best in their industries right now
