For me, the fact that Sam, who is a man, thought he was better suited for telling a woman’s story about rape culture, than a woman, tells me everything I need to know about him as a person.
Yes girl, it's digusting. That being the reason why you replayce your female director with a male one is super stupid. Also the Rolling Stones shaming is just... omg, so bad.
@@Asmax120 no but the fact that they had a woman say she likes rapey men after the producers said there was too much of a female perspective in the show is disgusting. Portraying toxic show businesses doesn’t mean u need to write a female character like this. Did u even watch the video?
@@Asmax120Bro, it wasn't supposed to be a fairy tale, it's 18+ and not for children for sure, it was supposed to portray the toxic side of music industry. You on drugs l0ser? No woman in earth likes rapey men. Doesn't matter how lame that woman is.
I watched the second episode and when the sex scene came in, all I could think about is "too much of a female perspective" while the weeknd was grabbing tits.
@@crystalnova4897 i'm just laughing at ppl who are acting shooketh that the weeknd is a creepy misogynist. like have yall listened to his ENTIRE DISCOGRAPHY ?? XD
I can’t get past the fact that Sam, who literally got grilled because of all the nudity in euphoria, thought it would be OK to have a whole scene and narrative in the show about how intimacy coordinators are bad or negative. Especially when Sydney Sweeney literally praised her intimacy coordinator in order defend Sam. He is showing us exactly who he is. Let’s believe him please. All of us.
the fact that, by the second episode, we've seen nearly every part of Lily Rose Depp's body, but have barely seen a chest hair from the weeknd, or any other man says everything you need to know about the show.
i always got the vibe that Abel is insecure about his body, he wears coats and long sleeves even in summer. That wouldn't been a problem if Lily wasn't wearing skimpy outfits all the time in the show, even at leisure!! so unrealistic.
Thanks for pointing that out. I cut out of Game of Thrones earlier than most because I got so sick of full nudity for female actors while their characters were having sex with male characters who somehow had sex through their pants. The double standard was extreme and you could just imagine how those casting sessions exploited the women.
@@Cat_Woods I was thinking the same. I think this is something happening throughout almost all HBO showsin general. Even shows I adore like Big little lies had so much female nudity in it and almost nothing from the men
i notice that in nearly every movie/show that shows nudity/almost nudity. i just watched the big lebowski yesterday and there are multiple shots of women being sexualised/nude, yet literally NONE of the men are sexualised one bit. its so obvious that the movie was directed by men, not to say it wasnt a good movie but like.. its just really frustrating and gross. and i watched it w my dad and i know he didnt notice it but i sure did
How much do you want to bet that Sam Levinson has some sort of weird beef with an intimacy coordinator from euphoria or something. And included the character in the idol, just so he could live through his revenge fantasy of locking the coordinator in a bathroom. I’m willing to put real money on that.
A user called SHANLIE a few comments under yours said actress Sydney Sweeney had to change her contract on the second season to stop her exposed body being shown so much. You are totally right on the money.
Malcolm & Marie included a random rant about a critic who Sam felt personally slighted by, so I'm convinced he just likes using his characters as mouthpieces for certain industry topics so I wouldn't be surprised
the minute they decided to villainize the intimacy coordinator I knew this show was a red flag. Something about sam Levinson villinaizing an intimacy coordinator after euphoria raises several questions
Anyone else find it weird that they didn’t want the show seen from too much of a female perspective yet it’s supposed to be a show about tackling corrupt ideals in Hollywood… you know.. like how in Hollywood women aren’t taken seriously and ostracized/sexualized and not given room for their own ideas. The irony and lack of self awareness is insane.
Also, that they chose a white woman for this because if you think Hollywood doesn't care about white women then imagine how little they care about women of color.
I saw a tiktok that said selma hayek did a mivie with a guy from friends and there's a scene selma wanted to artistically look in the distance with the friends guy to symbolize their future and maturing love in the movie. But the guy from friends just said no to her creative idea and they did the scene regular. I would say this is an example of women being not taken seriously
@@engeltjie_engelbrecht because zendaya and cinematography. Everyone agreed the weird scenes like the intro, the carousel scene and the Maddy beach scene were unnecessary
@@engeltjie_engelbrecht well fuck euphoria too,it has more substance(not enough, specially not in s2)than this shit but honestly I hope another season of it doesn't happen, its boring and stupid
@@engeltjie_engelbrecht when Euphoria came out, the young teenagers who made up the majority of the viewer base liked feeling rebellious and scandalous for watching a drug and sex fueled HBO show. The show does have some good writing moments, the music is great, the aesthetics are impeccable, but it’s inevitably carried by it’s star studded cast and beautiful score. The show feels like a desperate cash grab trying to create the most inappropriate situations possible to gain attention. It’s essentially Riverdale with a bigger budget.
so far i think the idol is one of the best examples of how the male gaze is not only culturally damaging but can also actually ruin art. there was an interesting concept and story here, but it was ruined by the men who can’t seem to see women and our pain as anything other than sexual objects. i’d kill to see the original idea with amy directing.
Definitely. Especially with Sam Levinson’s track record of constantly belittling and sexualising the female stars in his shows. That, and The Weeknd’s blatant use of misogynistic language in his lyrics. What a concoction of absolute BS. It’s just disgusting that they could even green light this disaster💀
and maybe could be interesting to watch a narrative that depicts a woman discovering consent-non-consent kinks, but it's a complex question very much within women's experience. not having a woman guiding the script is not only wrong, but also just makes it extremely superficial and objectively bad (as we can see in this series lol)
The intimacy coordinator isn't just there for the model/actor/person being intimate, they're also there for EVERYONE ELSE who did not necessarily consent to seeing a woman fully nude at the shoot. It's not all about her!!
Intimacy coordinator trying to their job to make sure everyone is comfortable while doing their job. The show: how dare you control how women should show their body
Agreed, it made me so uncomfortable. the fantasies of the men in control of the script & direction was so transparent and honestly quite sad. It’s unfortunate that Sam Levinson got so much attention out of Euphoria; I hope he sees all of this backlash and really looks inward because watching it is uncomfortable enough - thinking of these scenes, writing them, and bringing them life is twisted
@@nkc410I totally agree in fact I hope this show tanks so bad that it costs Sam his position at hbo... he's getting too bold & how the characters seem just designed to fulfill is unconscious desires is so gross & abusive as well as makes a mockery of potentially good actors & what they're actually capable of
I knew it was bad when I learnt that Sam Levinson and the weeknd fired the female director because the original script focused ‘too much’ on the female perspective…
They fired a female director so they could make a movie where the intimacy co-ordinator gets locked in a bathroom and the female MC has rape fantasies about the biggest creep on the scene. I haven't seen anything this blatantly self-indulgent in a while.
The fact that the show, which is directed by someone known for putting lots of nudity and sexual stuff into his productions, starts out with a scene kind of mocking and putting down nudity contracts and intimacy coordinators, a VERY vital part of this industry that is full of exploitation, is concerning. Like, is the take away supposed to be that it's more empowering to dismiss the literal safety measures put in place to lessen the amount of sexual exploitation?????
And those contractor's are SO IMPORTANT especially when it comes to Hollywood otherwise it would get so dark so fast for many of the young girls who want to be actors.
Unpopular opinion but I took from that scene that the point was to show that no matter how many steps the Industry takes to be legit, the people working there (joss's team) are such grifters and hustler that its never gonna make a difference
Exactly, they are literally filming in the MC’s house. They can bring a photographer back in 2 days. Instead the answer is to assault and traumatise the intimacy coordinator?
Sam Levinson is a creepy weirdo and I'm glad more people are realizing this. And the Weeknd seems to not be as much of a facade as its just who Abel is. Also, the two main actors being the most vocal about how great Sam is to work with gives me the same vibes of celebrities defending Ellen. Like of course it was nice for YOU.
Are there celebrities whose private selves are completely different than their public personas? The Rammstein scandal has kind of taught me a lesson ...
Except Ellen has never gotten the chance to defend herself. You've all just judged her as guilty by default and she hasn't gotten the ball yet. You can't prove she knew about or openly participated in the workplace problems, rather than someone pretending to act on her behalf, like in the MLP episode about Countess Coloratura. Furthermore, Telepictures is an aol boys' network with a history of making workplaces like this: they did so with Rosie O'Donnell's show. The problem lies with executives there, not Ellen herself.
@@Hannahgs She didn't get that. She didn't have a forum to express everything point by point, and make things clear, like, say, an interview, either in print or on broadcast media. No one ever bothered to do so, and the clickbait-hungry corporate media and short-attention-span Internet public have judged her guilty. It's as simple as that. You all use the the Maya Angelou quote, "When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them." Well, Ellen has shown us who she is since she came out in 1997, since she spoke so movingly at the vigil for Matthew Shepard in 1998. I believe her. But you don't apply that saying to Ellen. It's exactly like how Martha Stewart was convicted in that sham trial in a kangaroo court, chosen to be the first scalp for the government over Wall Street's sins, instead of more deserving targets like Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling and Bernie Ebbers. You want to find a fraud and a hypocrite in talk show circles? Go look at Oprah. You wanna find someone who is emblematic of toxicity. Go look at Tyra Banks. Ellen is nothing like them.
@@luv4hutch she defended herself on her show. She didn’t go point by point because she chose not to. ITS HER SHOW. She has put out multiple statements, if she hasn’t gone point by point enough for you, it’s because SHE CHOSE NOT TO. Probably because it would make her look bad to do so. Jesus you’re stupid. Ellen had every opportunity to defend herself on her own talk show she hosts and has control over. She has done dozens of interviews where SHE CHOSE not to go point by point. I don’t know what would satisfy you honestly. “She didn’t have a forum” SHE HAD HER OWN SHOW. FOR TWO YEARS AFTER THE ALLEGATIONS CAME OUT.
Not really that surprising that this show, which was supposed to be about misogyny in the industry, would also be a breeding ground for the exact thing they’re criticising. Especially with the blatantly sexualised and terribly written female characters. The fact they fired the female director for shoving too much of a ‘female perspective’ cements this. Plus... getting Sam Levinson of all people to critique misogyny is rich💀
Yes! On top of all that they hire Nusi Quero for their costume design for this past episode. The same man being accused of sexual assault by MULTIPLE women.
i have a feeling sam levinson always introduces himself with "i'm sam levinson have s3x with me now the countries with the lowest age of c0ns3nt are......"
Criticizing intimacy coordinators, lawyers, and consent is really interesting when it seems the show promotes r*pe fantasies and breath play, which require extremely clear consent, trust, and planning to not be dangerous. Like the fact they took a good premise and it seems they are boiling it down to a girls gone wild type thing is so embarrassing.
This. I was quite shocked by the entire scenario of this stranger coming into a woman's home for the first time and engaging in potentially dangerous acts with her with zero conversation, not before, not during and not after. Really? Bombastic Side-eye, as the cat says.
We don't see much of her own sexuality, it's all the male gaze :/ all we know is she likes pain, we don't see what she even likes in the Weeknd's character, she's the sexual object and he's fully clothed at all times
I think Rue’s addiction is pretty good especially episode 5 of s2 probably because SL is drawing from his own experience but pretty much everything else is exploitive and bs
I liked the characters actually. If it was about college kids of high graduates I would maybe be more into it but still alot better than this since Cassie had her clothes on more in season 2
Sam Levinson has a ... growing reputation. Particularly around how he sexualizes the torment of female characters, how he treats actresses in the background, etc. And not just in this show, but in Euphoria, too.
This was intentional… it’s about girls being brainwashed by the patriarchy into thinking they like this sort of behavious. Everything is intentional here people
@@ana7icia It could be, but I think in this case it’s too in ur face and disturbing to not be intentional in order to portray how fucked up the society is. In my opinion at least
That child actress story line for Jocelyn is 100% based on Jennette McCurdy’s memoir. It’s honestly so disgusting that they gave Jocelyn if not based a lot of her background on Jennette’s actual growing up (having an incredibly troubled co-dependent relationship with her mom, her mom essentially giving her an eating disorder, losing her mom to cancer) I MEAN WHAT THE HELL SAM LEVINSON
While it's incredibly similar, I wouldn't say it's entirely based upon it, because, sadly. It's more common than you'd think, just she's one of the few to come out about it/the biggest case (Though, I'm not much of a social media person, so there could be bigger ones, correct me if I'm wrong.)
Completely agree, learning more and more about the storyline, it's honestly disgusting how they're romanticizing and glorifying what Jenette's been through - glad this flopped and people still have some sort of moral compass
D’Angelo saying this whole episode felt like an extended version of one of The Weeknd’s music videos was the most accurate representation of what I just watched💀
It's the song Shameless from an old album too 😅 ngl I realize alot of his music is about exploited women in the world of fame....he put a nice melody over it and we missed all the red flags
I feel like Sam Levinsons ONLY GOAL in creating the intimacy coordinator character was a dig at the actresses from EUPHORIA who called him out for being gratuitous with their nudity.
That is... quite a leap you make there, but whatever. Especially considering these actresses also gushed about how collaborative he was and how safe/protected they felt on set. But hey, narratives can't push themselves.
@@grasstoucher2564 I don't have background info on the euphoria case specifically, but I do know that sometimes people will defend the predatory people when they're locked into a contract (like some of the GoT cast). So publicly, they might say "yeah it's fine, I feel great!" but keep in mind, they're trying to pay their bills with these shows
Honestly it just seems like a series of a weeknd video. The bdsm, the sex addiction, the cult like feel. All I’ve gotten from Jocelyn is that she’s broken, she’s getting persuaded into a cult and she’s constantly having sex with dude.
Funny you say this, because when I watched episode 1 I literally said out loud, “ This just seems like a really long music video for The Weeknd” 😂 I kept watching waiting for it to get good and it never did.

The whole “it’s suppose to feel corny/uneasy” excuse doesn’t even work because the show obviously takes itself too serious for this to even come across as such.
This!! Also smth I hate in horror movies is the ridiculous shock factor. Oh no how horrible the animal died for no reason at all! Let's zoom in on the corpse bc that's totally needed. Let's show a girl getting, almost getting, or implied to be getting SA'd bc that's totally needed! And then it does nothing for the rest of the story?? Learn how to make a good movie goddamn. That shock factor shit just immediately depletes the quality in my opinion

Except for maybe Saw because Jigsaw’s storyline was a bit intriguing
This fr. Like you cant have corny and serious. Not without making each abundantly clear in those moments. And they could have uneasy, but they go about it so horribly. Theres a way to make the viewers uneasy and tackle serious issues without making it seem like the weekend is just playing out some kind of fantasy of his which is what this feels like. Is just him and sam playing out some kind of fantasy. Maybe if they played it like his character was good at manipulating people, i could believe that and understand that and the message, but instead they just brought DOWN depp’s character. As a crew member who's worked on The Idol I am SO happy this show is getting the back lash it deserves. Not only was it 17+ hour days, no lunch, toxic producers, director, talent, etc. It's just a BAD gig to work on. We wasted soooo much fucking time waiting on talent, no finish script a lot of the time, so we are just fucking shooting nonsense. Levinson has NOOOO fucking idea how to shoot on film, we rolled out constantly because he never called cut sooo fucking stupid. The AD would almost ALWAYS have to baby Levinson because he's an idiot who honestly just leans on sex to tell a story. I'm not a director but I've been lucky to work with AMAZING director and he does not give his talent the direction they NEED in order to become a character. Ugh. I hope this show gives him less opportunities to make shows/movies because he TRULY makes a toxic environment on set.
@@SleepingDreamer16 Working toxic gigs is nothing new in film. HBO is kinda known to have productions that are peels. The worst part is the ending where she accepts being strangled and lets him do whatever to her. This is clearly the rapey fantasy that men have and instead of showing how wrong it is they just make it seem acceptable by her not fighting back. It's quite sick how some men will see this and think it's okay

@squibbelsmcjohnsonconsent is the key, fulfilling a fantasy safely is pretty normal. its why they let you pay to ride in a monster truck. but if you're just pulled into one because "its fun" and taken on a tear around the arena without permission and you come out screaming kidnap kidnap, the person doing it gets no leway just bc "usually people like it"
I feel so bad for all the girls and guys who were actually taken advantage of and have suffered in silence to then have a show glorifying their trauma it’s really sad
Beep bop... I'm the Philosophy Bot. Here, have a quote: "We can easily forgive a child who is afraid of the dark; the real tragedy of life is when men are afraid of the light" ~ Plato
as a sa child survivor I agree, but does every show have to be a meaningful portrayal or strength? Surely the main character is allowed to have a voice and we don't have a reason to believe she had her consent violated do we? I understand that misogyny in media is terrible but isn't one bad or problematic sexually charged show just that? maybe I am missing something.
y'all the second episode came out after i made this and it's BADDD 😭 should i talk about it? (i'm gonna heart this comment so y'all see it) edit: omg thanks for the heart
Incredddddibly wild that after a bunch of articles accusing Sam Levinson of exploiting young actresses body’s in a gratuitous way in Euphoria his take in the show is ‘actually women love to be nude all the time soooo much that gross intimacy coordinators are evil actually’
Show literally felt like a group project where everyone has different ideas, but they only have a week left to do it and so they just combine all of their thoughts into one 40 minute sequence.
Thank you that opening scene where thy paint the nudity writer guy as the bad one REALLY irritated me. He's the one in a million chance out here trying to protect women and given them an out when they're uncomfortable in Hollywood but the show makes it a "women being forced to cover up and be suppressed" bullsh*t. All the social commentary takes in this show are so bad! Edit: The irony of this scene too when you remember Sydney was in the situation of being manipulated into showing all of her body so much on Euphoria, she finally broke down and changed her contract in Season2 to not have her naked body on screen anymore!

I've read books like this. Its like the writer has the basics of the story down, but never learned to write the stuff in between those scenes. Very choppy, to say the least. 😂
The funniest thing about the second episode was Jocelyn remastering her song that was 80% done into an oversexualized self-involved mess in a show that was scrapped and reshot when it was 80% done and made into an oversexualized self-involved mess. Poetic cinema.
I really wish that this show was more like Bojack Horseman. If they went through the story of Sarah Lynn and her exploitation, it would be so much more impactful and eye opening
It's never a good sign when the director/producer of a show starts bragging about how provacative or boundary pushing it is, because all that tells me is they're snorting their own ego
I thought that too. It gave me the biggest ick. Like he didnt even defend it besides saying it was meant to be provocative. He could've said "it is provocative, but it's also about the self destructive of egos and the importance of very needed conversation of the exploitation of artists, musicians, models, actors, etc., especially the young ones, who need to be used for their contribution to the arts, and not just used for their attractiveness." But, honestly, he would just be lying because he knows damn well the steaming pile of poop they made, and that it's just shock value with no substance, boring and overexaggerted characters that exist within a gross fantasy landscape.
I saw a tweet saying: "When y'all buy badly written white books to see how bad it is, all you're doing is telling the publisher it doesn't matter if the book is well written or badly written, they're gonna make money regardless. Therefore, they'll continue to publish badly written white books..." could the same thing apply to bad shows??
absolutely, i never watched euphoria or any sam levinson works for this reason. realistically im only one viewer, but i sleep better knowing i dont (at least directly) contribute to encouraging genuinely bad media production
Yeah hate watchers are definitely pushing this show forward. The same thing happened with that Thelma show that got a second season due to all of the press attention and hate watching. Hopefully this show doesn’t get the same treatment but only time will tell.
absolutely this is why i hate hate watchers. the producers don't care its hated as long as its making them money. one of the best ways to Make it these days is to make people mad.
Sam Levinson is this generation’s Bryan Singer. Me too did nothing compared to mainstream porn culture normalising unnecessary graphic sex scenes and exploiting young actors the showmakers could never, ever get during high school. There’s a contempt for these girls you can feel through the screen and I won’t be surprised when all of the stuff that happens behind the scenes comes out in another decade.
Contempt is the perfect word for this kind of work. And it begs the question, who fucking asked them how they feel about teenage girls and young women being preyed on in Hollywood.
Well, HBO are to blame here. They were happy to sack the woman making a real show about the subject matter, but Weekend and Sam had a mantrum about it “not being about the men” enough. Take a look at the mock-up concepts and fun this show was having with their interpretation before the female creator was sacked. It’s a Britney Spears/Montana dreamboat and Depp looks like she has life in her eyes. It’s HBO enabling misogyny for their viewers and it’s insulting to everyone for various reasons - but I think it’s traumatising at this point to pretend this is “art” or “entertainment” worth watching.
Did anyone hear that they wanted to film Lilly Rose putting an egg up herself. The only reason why it was cut is bc they couldn’t figure out how to do the stunt with special effects. This show is unhinged
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate how good D’Angelo looks in spring colors? Like the subtle pink glasses and the pink accents in the sweater???? Icon.
I had the same issue with Euphoria. The music was cool, the scenes were visually stunning at times, and the plot was agonizingly slow and fucking stupid. 17 year olds displayed overwhelming desires for drugs and sex while also vilifying both. Kats storyline was the only promising one, but instead of falling in love with herself through fashion or something, she just discovers certain men will fetishize her and that seems to be enough. It was hard to sit through despite having actually good actors. We really don't need anymore privileged rapey men in television; that role has been more than filled
Also - teenagers aren't (generally speaking) sex monsters in real life. Why can't any of these kids be shown finding self-actualization by collecting squishmallows or torturing Sims characters (like teens do in real life)?
@@cussedcat28 Sadly they overdramatize the "teen" life, it doesn't even feel like the characters are in high school anymore. Most teens don't do this type of stuff, yes they can have sex, yes they can do drugs but it's mostly college and frat party shit and it's DEFINITELY not to the extent that happens in the show most of the time(minus rues addiction that is very very real and common). How in the world are they getting the money for the drugs? It's never stated they have jobs and I definitely don't see any scenes of rue doing a 9-5 to pay for them. On top of that, majority of the main women of the cast are wearing clothes that would be completely against regular dress code and are high sexualized, this is a especially apparent in Cassie as she mostly wears clothes that show her cleavage (again this is supposed to be a high schooler) Sam wants to sexualize them as much as possible and it's honestly to the point where it's perverted imo... Again it is true that there are women out there who are in Cassie predicament but that won't justify him putting a high schooler in this situation. And then there's nothing said about school work or any school life for that matter. The show doesn't even try to balance it even though it would've been interesting to see rue to start failing her classes due to her depression its very real and can be super repeatable to people like myself who feel like there isn't a point anymore and just give up. it's just sex, drugs and drama theres no teachers in sight, no people regulating anything in the school everyone else is just there. Obviously the show doesn't have to be realistic but if you're going to be putting your characters in a high school setting at least have them act like they're in high school. If anything they'd be trying to hide everything from their parents even more if they truly wanted to be realistic but the show puts almost every parent on the back burner and completely forgets abt them.
I get the feeling The Idol is the Weekends attempt to live out his inner fantasies and when the previous female director wasn't having it (and probably turned down some of his ideas) she got sacked... meanwhile everyone else is contractually locked in.. You gotta put yourself in the mind of a guy writing a show at which one of the main stars is himself... he wrote this role for himself.
The original director had the far better idea, in my opinion. In order for you to care about characters like this (vapid, filthy rich, dubiously talented), there needs to be some exposition on character background. Ok, we know her mom died and she likes to wear skimpy clothes. But that's it. We know nothing else about her. There's no character development. The original director sounded like she wanted to tell more of the story from Joslyn's point of view and really dig into the motivations of the character, rather than focus on long, lingering shots of Jos's naked/near naked body.
@JKyall yes that's what it sounds like. That's probably why Jennie signed on. I heard it was basically a story of one of these kpop stars(or any new female stars) up and coming struggles without doing a reality show. It just sounds like The Weekend wanted a show for a character he probably has always wanted to play, maybe a inner dark person of himself, and didn't want anyone to get in the way of that priority

Same, and then I felt bad when she was defending them and made the jab at intimacy coordinators. The question this show and lily give me "is it sexual liberation (of women) or the exploitation of a woman's sexuality?" I've realized the difference and it's the latter
Before all the issues with the show I heard that it would be kinda inspired by Keith raniere and the nxivm cult. I thought it would be interesting to see a show explore how a charismatic leader pursues vulnerable people to create their cult and how it could even happen to celebrities in the public eye. It’s a shame that the show’s production became an environment for the abuse of power when that’s what the show’s narrative could have discussed.
What sucks even more is that when people from the kpop community criticizes the show for oversexualizing the woman characters, the awful script, and how problematic Sam Levinson is, blackpink fans would come to the defense and tell you that "it's Hollywood, what do you expect?!" as if that excuses the problems with this show. I observe this as them immediately thinking that people are attacking Ms. Jennie, instead of pausing and thinking that maybe people are criticizing the show for more sane reasons, like treating the women characters as sex objects.
No you’re definitely right, however it’s funny seeing some of the kpoppies talking about the show being bad for sexualizing women and treating them like shit (WHICH IT IS) but these are the same ones I see slutshame women on a daily. It’s just a little bit hypocritical and ironic. This show is absolute ass though and creepy like who tf keeps letting this nasty ass man make shit?
Your right but most people were not such intellectuals, they weren't really criticizing they were legit talking jabs at jennie under the guise of criticism
Unfortunately, some of the fandom might see it as "This is one of Jennie's chances to shine as an actress, and you're attacking that chance by calling it bad," which will get them defensive. The rate at which mob opinion spreads and narratives become "truths" only weakens any chance of combating that.
I swear these were my thoughts exactly. I actually sat & thought about how this scenario would play out irl & most definitely not with "I kinda like that".
Watching it feels like I’m watching Sam and Abel’s grapey whattpad drafts. Lily also (allegedly, although I don’t doubt it) asked them to cut some of the of the naked scenes and sex scenes. Imagine that.
Dude you don't know the half of it. There was a scene where Lily's character was supposed to carry an egg in her vagina on the behest of Abel's character and he would like rape her if she were to break it. Shit was fucking out there.
Someone on tiktok pointed out that Sam Levinson always heavily sexualizes the female characters that look similar to his mother and I could never unsee it. We can't keep letting Freud winning like this.
My eyeballs nearly fell out of my head after rolling so hard hearing Sam Levinson say the show would be “provocative”. I have never been less motivated to watch something in my life. Thank you D’Angelo for shielding us from this garbage.
Although I agree with some ppl online that there's nothing wrong with making a TV show about sexuality, the real problem is the sexism of that portrayal of sexuality- it's all about her, what she likes and what drives her but we don't actually see any of the scenes from her pov? She has two/three sex-ish scenes and in ALL of them, she's the object of the camera focus. We don't see what she likes, we see what she's getting off on. She's sexually obsessed with the Weeknd's character but we don't see the attraction she sees in him- she's partly naked in many scenes and he's always fully clothed, and never does anything sexy except speak. As the viewer, it's clear we're supposed to be attracted to HER in the relationship, which really limits the sex scenes and the viewpoint of the whole show :/ that's the difference between TV sex scenes and porn- one is telling a story, a relationship between two people, and one is JUST for the pleasure of the viewer. It's clear the sexiness of this whole show is being prioritised over actual character and storytelling. It's just 1000% the male gaze, if it was directed towards anyone but straight men it would focus more on her pleasure and the sexiness of the Weeknd's character
Oh damn, loved how u said it. I literally don't get the over sexualised clothes on her, with no understanding of her character identity. Like aint no psychological descriptions of her? It's always men that are clothed head to toe, and are always attractive no matter what they do. While female charcters MUST show some skin. It's ridiculous
I mean, even porn still has more care to the story and the buildup to those scenes than this. Because porn wants its audience to get aroused. Meanwhile, the only two people who got aroused by the Idol are the Weeknd and Sam Levinson.
As an SA survivor, I literally cannot watch it without triggers. It’s disgusting how women are continually put through trauma porn in media, just like “Blonde.” It’s hard to explain the slimy feeling you get watching something like The Idol if you haven’t been through abuse, but it’s very real and it’s very gross. Personally I’m asking my friends not to support the show. Success for something of this nature leads to further exploitation of women, our bodies, and men treating us how they see in media. Edit: A lot of people have taken this to mean I don’t think triggers should be put in media. That wasn’t my point. There is really good media I don’t watch because of SA content, like Outlander, which does a good job of approaching trauma empathetically and showing it’s effects. But it’s how you execute it. You can approach subject matter like this with ethical intentions, like the show’s original direction when it had a female director. But unfortunately that’s not what ended up happening.
it's been a long time since my last time being S3xually Harrased and luckyly i could go through the 2nd episode, but that doesn't change the fact that i feel grossed out. I had to detach my mind from what i was watching and intencionally laugh about it. It's a totally exploitative show.
THIS even as a satire whats so funny about a guy being a predator like what was that this comment trying to achieve I cannot wrap my head around how was this funny in any universe. The last scene of the first ep was vile, the Weekend seemed WAY too into it for my own comfort, like is this even him acting anymore? Does he want to hurt and degrade women? Do they have any self awareness at all this is the opposite of being edgy or cool or different or anything they think this is
I’ve loved The Weeknd’s music for a long time, but when I first heard details about this show I couldn’t ignore this negging little feeling that he might just be a straight up misogynist, and the only reason he hasn’t been called out for it yet is because he makes it “artsy” enough to excuse away and is smart enough not to go into specifics publicly I’m not an expert fan by any means so correct me if i’m wrong, but it just feels like a lot of the art and music projects he gets directly artistically involved in go hard on the whole “edgy guy manipulating a woman’s mind and emotions because he’s broken and feels nothing.” Idk just feels like he calls himself out a lot or might have some self reflection to do lol. I wanna continue liking his music but it’s kinda hard to find him too compelling because he gives me the Andrew Tate sympathizer vibe lmao
Look, i like the weekends songs, but, as a woman, the lyrics make me happy that im never meeting the weekend irl. He sounds like a pretty bad person, especially to women, but yea, his music is fun
People need to really get it together. This isn’t “art” to these people, it’s them living out their messed up fantasies. These are the things they believe. This is the way they want things to be. I think sometimes people see things like this and assume it’s someone having creative license and being free. But nah freedom doesn’t come with the objectification of another.
The idea of The Weekend playing a character that’s acting tougher than he really is, was exactly what Justin Timberlake was able to pull off in The Social Network
The intimacy coordinator scene was the most shocking scene to me and I honest tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by thinking the show was just trying to show how nasty her team is, but after what Lily said I don’t think that’s what they were trying to do. 🤢
Honestly terrifying! I work in theater and we have been FIGHTING to get intimacy coordinators in the room and respected. It’s absolutely just a director that hates the fact he has to work around an intimacy coordinator creating a scene where the coordinator is ‘the bad guy’ and actually holding back the *actress* instead of stopping creepy production staff from taking advantage of a young woman. They’re trying to set back all the hard work that’s being done to keep actors safe
jocelyn feels like the embodiment of 2014 tumblr and it's so tired. also when the weeknd came out and used the piano to play dies irae i completely broke and started cackling, it was so damn corny. that's when it really, really lost me, the entire plot is just so transparent
The scene with the intimacy coordinator could’ve been interesting. Jocelyn went through a psychotic break and could be hypersexualizing herself as a response (maybe she feels this is the only thing about herself/her image she can control?), and since her team are leeches and know that her success means their success, they lock the intimacy coordinator out so she can do the shoot. But instead the scene falls flat and is a mishmash of conflicting messages.
I feel like I couldn't tell who I was supposed to root for. Obviously her team is in the wrong, but I can't tell if the story is telling me if they are or they aren't.
@@chillfactory9000 Exactly! Also, I don't know anything about the field, but 48h seemed like a lot of time to wait around for a contract to be written again and signed when everything else seems fast-paced
I totally agree!!! Maybe they could have had him bring up the issue with her team before talking to Jocelyn directly and they could have been all hypocritical 'So are you trying to CONTROL this woman's body???' With it being clear that that's what they are doing and then lock him in the bathroom. It would also add to Jocelyn not having control over her life bc I suspect that they are going to make it so that The Weekend's character is going to manipulate her into thinking that he is giving her control back when in reality he just becomes the person in control instead of her team
Why should it have a specific message? This show isn't great (although it's better than a lot of TV) but this underlines the exact problem with younger audiences. They don't know how to engage with art. They want everything spoonfed to them. They don't want to do any work themselves and have their own thoughts regarding the scene. Art is about depiction, not about forcing a message.
Someone said Sam Levinson has an obsession with humiliating women that look like his mother (Cassie in Euphoria and Jocelyn in this case) and i can‘t forget it
it’s funny because from a narrative perspective the weeknd’s character could have been a much smaller role - joselyn’s grief, self sabotage and her enabling yes-man team is more than enough conflict for a series
Levinson is not interested in making that show. He wouldn’t know how to make that show. He doesn’t want to make a show about sex. He wants to make a sexy show.
I actually JUST realized that this show is basically the premise of a majority of his music.....like his old music and new is giving the vibe that it's about exploited or "lost" women seeking fame or something like that. Bit shamed I didn't see it sooner but I don't really listen to him anymore since Starboy 😅
"Wanna fuck a skinny model right before her runway show" "Did an album just to do it, droppin' albums like a pill Percocets, Adderall, ecstasy, pussy, money, weed" "Dick made out of magic, my tongue got superpowers I woke up in the mornin', models passed out in the shower" All of these are from the same song lol The Idol is just Drunk in Love the show
Its honestly just so unrealistic, like if a women directed the show she would not have ONLY Lily naked in all the sex scenes and she would not have Lily say sum "I like the rapey vibes" I feel like the weeknd has some kind of insecurity and this is his way of living out his sick fantasies.
Having only one partner naked and the other fully clothed is usually a visual demonstration of dominance, in the sense that the naked partner is vulnerable in their nudity and humanity, while the clothed one is almost a monolith, inhuman and dominant. So I think they wanted to sort of go for it, but the problem is that it's also a "trick" that has been used in media for centuries, because het men were\are too insecure in their sexuality to see other men naked lol Thing is, to make it work the first way, they should've chosen an actor that looked the part and dressed like an actual dom, not this cringe lil bitch with a stupid hairdo.
So odd tidbit: Levinson has a habit of making “revenge” parts..its well known amongst those in the industry that the Intimacy Coordinator bit was his way of venting frustration about the man tasked with this job on Euphoria! Anytime he had to step in & enforce the girl’s riders (drawn up by their agents after months of girls feeling unnecessarily exploited) Sam would throw a MASSIVE fit & stop production for day. He would “jokingly” tell assistants to make sure he was locked off set etc…which made everyone uncomfortable cuz was so obviously not a joke OR something they would be willing to do. He made an entire revenge movie about a critic that was “too harsh” about his work. It boggles the mind!
Wait do you have sources or discussion board where this has been said ? It makes perfect sense and I believe it but I don’t understand how he stays relevant and working even when doing such blatantly immature and borderline dangerous things
this! i remember he received a negative review from a female critic for his movie "assassination nation" being similarly exploitative and he was so bitter about that that he later used john david washington's character in "malcolm and marie" as a mouthpiece to vent about this but tried to make it seem like it was about race and poc issues so that it didn't come off as self-indulgent lmaoo
Omg yes! He loves to throw his own personal gripes about the entertainment industry into his writing. Another pattern I noticed was the "rapey" comment. There's a flashback scene in Euphoria where a 40 yr old man approaches young Maddie (14 yrs old I think?) on the beach to have sex with her, and Rue's character says "in retrospect seems kind of rapey and weird, but honestly she was the one in control." How on earth is he allowed to keep depicting young women like this? It's not empowering at all. Trying to make rape culture this casual, cutesy thing is so disgusting.
There had to be an intimacy coordinator for this show especially for the photoshoot at the beginning so imagine how awkward it must've been for them to watch the filming and see them put down the intimacy coordinator in the show.
I like to imagine that reading that scene, written by someone who so clearly had an axe to grind , the intimacy co-ordinator said “fuck it” and amused themself in their time between scenes engaging in psychological warfare with Levinson. “I feel I owe you some money, Mr Levinson. Please tell me, how long have myself and colleagues all been living rent-free in your head?”
Okay can we also talk about how confusing it is that they marketed this show around having a famous popstar in it and also created a lot of buzz around having a famous kpop star in it and the show is called the idol. And yet neither of those people are titular idol. The weekend being there just makes it confusing because it's like ... Wait he isn't the idol
the naming really felt lazy. considering the definitions and connotations of "idol", they could have woven it into a commentary about celebrity culture (like the show was apparently supposed to). its impressive how much potential was wasted in this entire fiasco.
So glad you reviewed this. I'm a film major and the newer shows like this piss me off because the story is just god awful and has no purpose. It's all about the names you can get on screen and how pretty it looks. Sam Levinson is the embodiment of a film bro and I'm not here for it
I think Jacob Elordi played Nate exceptionally well as a creepy unnerving character that’s harder than what he actually is , it seems that’s what Tedros was trying to be but he needed more time to perfect his craft clearly
I mean, with the kind of ego he has shown behind the scenes, I don't know if he has the humility to really dedicate himself to mastering the craft of acting.
The fact that Levinson made the intimacy coordinator into a villain I- He’s known for speaking through his characters (see Malcolm and Marie and his thoughts on critics who happen to be POC .. actually don’t because it sucks) like the rank, creepy, skeezy amateur he is.
They didn't make the intimacy coordinator into a villain. It's REALLY OBVIOUS that Jocelyn's staff are evil and exploiting her. Didn't the MENTAL ILLNESS IS SO HOT speech make that clear to anyone? It's weird how GEN Z always needs someone on screen to point to the bad guy and say THATS BAD YOU"RE THE BAD GUY. lol
@@jph4889 but from the feels and framing even from the lead it’s does come off as if it’s trying to say “someone stepping in and trying to control her! A woman!! From what she can do with her body cause she agreed!!” When really like yeah, we are meant to side with the intimacy coordinator regardless of if she agree to it now. It just mainly knowing how much Sam loves to use nudity as just kinda a shock value, almost uncomfortable levels of prevalence in his other works which has been something audiences have called out that’s why painting contracts and intimacy coordinators as being framed in a negative light from the POV of the lead I feel comes off in a much different light. Villain, no, but we are suppose to not agree with that character which is why it feels slimy.
Yeah I think this was his way of getting back at critics who said euphoria was exploitative. Even if it was framed as a bad thing in the show it just shows how much of a petty, vengeful man child he is. He really ruined Malcolm and Marie with this shit.
Girl Sam is so full of it. I really wish they would put a padlock on the writing room so he can just stop. Like why does HBO keep letting him on the premises????? 🙄🙃
To me as a photographer, that very first scene where the photographer directs her through the sequence of laughter, innocence, mischievous/playful, sexual, vulnerable, emotional/crying struck me as a pretty gnarly/heavy sequence of emotions especially in the specific order they were in, a very not trauma informed way to direct a shoot, and possibly some heavy handed foreshadowing of the sequence the show wants to take this character through.
From articles Levison mentioned how he edited the script too include very trauma inducing sexual raape-esque scenes and the team had to stop him from pushing the scenes on it too far since they were apparently getting too intense. So it wouldn't be surprising to see more after how they wrote these last 2 episodes
sounds like the target audience of this show is people like my old film professor who, despite it being a sci-fi unit, took pains to include gratuitous female nudity in 99% of the films we watched in class-to the point where when he posted a clip from The Shining on a discussion board for us to watch, I knew it would be the bathtub scene before I even saw the thumbnail. maybe he taught Sam Levinson, too. they’re certainly kindred spirits in that regard
We have a nepo baby lead actress and a dated story with unsubtle commentary sandwiched between two male egos (Levison and Weeknd). Unremarkably mid was the best case scenario we were ever gonna get.
I'm shcoked that people are just now calling sam levinson's weirdness out. Euphoria is full of nasty stuff. The very first episode of euphoria even showed a grown man having sex with a child. I feel like the idol's cringey dialogue is so on brand for Sam Levinson.
There’s another show I’ll never bother with, I didn’t know, thanks for the warning. It’s scary the all the people I’ve seen praise that show never once mentioned that.
@@MysteriousCarnation the only good thing about Euphoria is Zendaya's acting skills. Other than that, the it's disgusting festish stuff and minimal plot.
I’m loving this era of D’Angelo. He’s so well spoken that I can prob watch his commentary on anything and I love how I legit have no idea what he’s coming up with next since I don’t follow main stream media like I used to.
HBO was the first major production company to use an intimacy coordinator... which somehow makes the objectively bad choice to portray intimacy coordinators as pesky and restrictive even stranger
The intimacy coordinator scene in combination with the pure amount of scenes of some pretty heavy fetish stuff done with basically no consent or communication beforehand makes me believe the claims made on what was happening behind the scenes were legit, maybe even WORSE than what was described in that original article

the fact that, by the second episode, we've seen nearly every part of Lily Rose Depp's body, but have barely seen a chest hair from the weeknd, or any other man says everything you need to know about the show.
i always got the vibe that Abel is insecure about his body, he wears coats and long sleeves even in summer.
The double standard was extreme and you could just imagine how those casting sessions exploited the women.

the minute they decided to villainize the intimacy coordinator I knew this show was a red flag.

Exactly

@SaltyAndGreasy Hollywood doing Hollywood things
@SaltyAndGreasybecause it could have been a good way to showcase how misogynistic Hollywood is. Instead it’s turned into whatever this is
Before all the issues with the show I heard that it would be kinda inspired by Keith raniere and the nxivm cult.
It's not even Hollywood... It's a HBO show🤦🏻♀
There's a massive difference. HBO shows are supposed to be top tear stuff. Not this garbage.
jennie got casted after sam levinson became the director she said herself that she loves his works she's not innocent lol 💀

"Yeah I kind of like that about him"
Is something that was never said by any person, ever.
Good grief wtf is this show
I swear these were my thoughts exactly.

EXACTLYY
words out of my mouth, thank you
Oh damn, loved how u said it. I literally don't get the over sexualised clothes on her, with no understanding of her character identity. Like aint no psychological descriptions of her? It's always men that are clothed head to toe, and are always attractive no matter what they do. While female charcters MUST show some skin. It's ridiculous
Man I'm sure that Johnny Depp got very disappointed and also angry at the director, producers etc
I mean, even porn still has more care to the story and the buildup to those scenes than this. Because porn wants its audience to get aroused. Meanwhile, the only two people who got aroused by the Idol are the Weeknd and Sam Levinson.
d'angelo absolutely ROASTING the weekend's appearance added back the time i lost from my lifespan watching this show

I totally empathize with this, I wanted to take a shower after watching the first ep. It was awful.
Yes, this feels icky. I always thought Euphoria also felt very icky and couldn't get through it.
it's been a long time since my last time being S3xually Harrased and luckyly i could go through the 2nd episode, but that doesn't change the fact that i feel grossed out. I had to detach my mind from what i was watching and intencionally laugh about it. It's a totally exploitative show.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
THIS even as a satire whats so funny about a guy being a predator like what was that this comment trying to achieve I cannot wrap my head around how was this funny in any universe. The last scene of the first ep was vile, the Weekend seemed WAY too into it for my own comfort, like is this even him acting anymore? Does he want to hurt and degrade women? Do they have any self awareness at all this is the opposite of being edgy or cool or different or anything they think this is
I’ve loved The Weeknd’s music for a long time, but when I first heard details about this show I couldn’t ignore this negging little feeling that he might just be a straight up misogynist, and the only reason he hasn’t been called out for it yet is because he makes it “artsy” enough to excuse away and is smart enough not to go into specifics publicly
I’m not an expert fan by any means so correct me if i’m wrong, but it just feels like a lot of the art and music projects he gets directly artistically involved in go hard on the whole “edgy guy manipulating a woman’s mind and emotions because he’s broken and feels nothing.” Idk just feels like he calls himself out a lot or might have some self reflection to do lol.
I wanna continue liking his music but it’s kinda hard to find him too compelling because he gives me the Andrew Tate sympathizer vibe lmao
This is also just a trend I’ve noticed in shows specifically like Euphoria too. Just, it’s a choice to create art like this,,,
Look, i like the weekends songs, but, as a woman, the lyrics make me happy that im never meeting the weekend irl. He sounds like a pretty bad person, especially to women, but yea, his music is fun
Same, ever since the rumors about this series started to come out I just got the ick every time I heard one of his songs from my playlist 😭
I've been listening to his music since forever and honestly he's always been like this. His music even tho good it's extremely misogynistic :///
There was also that one song that said he can change bisexual women with his "prowess."

I can't even use the "the writer's barely disguised fetish" joke, because it's not even disguised in this show.

The idea of The Weekend playing a character that’s acting tougher than he really is, was exactly what Justin Timberlake was able to pull off in The Social Network
I guess that's what happens when you're under one of the best directors in Hollywood, you're bound to make great performances
The intimacy coordinator scene was the most shocking scene to me and I honest tried to give it the benefit of the doubt by thinking the show was just trying to show how nasty her team is, but after what Lily said I don’t think that’s what they were trying to do. 🤢
It's a stupid scene as well, since her contact is legally binding whether they're in the room or not!
The show wants to make the intimacy coordinator the enemy because he's trying to "police women's sexuality" but really he's the unsung hero.
Yep it just goes to show how Levinson really feels about not being able to exploit his actresses more.
Pp
jocelyn feels like the embodiment of 2014 tumblr and it's so tired. also when the weeknd came out and used the piano to play dies irae i completely broke and started cackling, it was so damn corny. that's when it really, really lost me, the entire plot is just so transparent
Don't read my name!!
@Jam K but it was literally made with a message. They wanted to 'expose' Hollywood.
Props for "one is 365 days and the other is just the Weekend...." I laughed way too loudly at that.

@@attractivekiwi4772 What is a woman?
Levinson is not interested in making that show. He wouldn’t know how to make that show.
He doesn’t want to make a show about sex. He wants to make a sexy show.
all of this is extremely unsurprising considering the weeknd’s lyrics and the contents of euphoria
I actually JUST realized that this show is basically the premise of a majority of his music.....like his old music and new is giving the vibe that it's about exploited or "lost" women seeking fame or something like that. Bit shamed I didn't see it sooner but I don't really listen to him anymore since Starboy 😅

"Did an album just to do it, droppin' albums like a pill
Percocets, Adderall, ecstasy, pussy, money, weed"
"Dick made out of magic, my tongue got superpowers
I woke up in the mornin', models passed out in the shower"
All of these are from the same song lol The Idol is just Drunk in Love the show
Its honestly just so unrealistic, like if a women directed the show she would not have ONLY Lily naked in all the sex scenes and she would not have Lily say sum "I like the rapey vibes" I feel like the weeknd has some kind of insecurity and this is his way of living out his sick fantasies.
I know right? the weeknd doesnt even take off his shirt
Having only one partner naked and the other fully clothed is usually a visual demonstration of dominance, in the sense that the naked partner is vulnerable in their nudity and humanity, while the clothed one is almost a monolith, inhuman and dominant. So I think they wanted to sort of go for it, but the problem is that it's also a "trick" that has been used in media for centuries, because het men were\are too insecure in their sexuality to see other men naked lol
Thing is, to make it work the first way, they should've chosen an actor that looked the part and dressed like an actual dom, not this cringe lil bitch with a stupid hairdo.
I read that a lot of the material is a dig at Selena Gomez. Just cringe all around from both guys.
It boggles the mind!
sam levinson is such a fucking freak.
@@naomiea.naomie6665 Because everyone is booking work and making money.
😂😂😂😂
I saw an ad with Jennie on tiktok and assumed it was about her playing an idol because of the name
the naming really felt lazy. considering the definitions and connotations of "idol", they could have woven it into a commentary about celebrity culture (like the show was apparently supposed to). its impressive how much potential was wasted in this entire fiasco.

The fact that Levinson made the intimacy coordinator into a villain I-
He’s known for speaking through his characters (see Malcolm and Marie and his thoughts on critics who happen to be POC .. actually don’t because it sucks) like the rank, creepy, skeezy amateur he is.
A woman!!
