      I know, I know, the far end of the railroad is a couple hours away and leaves you sore sitting down for so long. Once you travel under the highway, you may not see any trains. That’s how it was for us in 2015. It was just mile after mile out in the wilderness. It’s nothing like the loop of track in a City Park 99.9% of the people think it is. Go to google maps satellite view and look at it from the sky.

  • @lancomedic
    @lancomedic 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I noticed a fire truck standing by. Is that a requirement when you run steam in the woods? Also some of these like the Amtrak train were going pretty fast. Do these need to be inspected for safety the way amusement park rides do?

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fred, every Live Steam club has boiler safety requirements, wheel tread specifications, brake requirements. A 1½” scale locomotive, a train and loaded with riders weighs several tons.
      Most of the Live Steam boilers that I have seen were seamless stainless steel, welded by certified boiler welders. A few really old ones had silver brazed copper boilers. They were limited to very low pressures.
      Because a perfectly to-scale ⅛ size locomotive weighs 1/512 (⅛x⅛x⅛) of its full-size original, but its grate area and piston areas are 1/64 (⅛x⅛) of the original, live steam locomotives develop far more power than they can use. So a much lower pressure than the original (200-300 psi) provides plenty of power.

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ⅛ scale 80 mph = 10 actual mph.

    what is a ballpark number on how much these train sets cost?

    • @Amtrak458
      @Amtrak458  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends but something like this would cost around $25,000-$30,000. Maybe even more. The Amtrak commuter train you see a lot here was custom built.

    • @harryrobinson2901
      @harryrobinson2901 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of locos are custom built. For a smaller 5” gauge one, perhaps 1500 to 20000 dollars. For one of these 7 1/4 gauge ones it would be more. I’m in England though, it may be different in America.

    I know in the saftey video they said that they would only accept propane fired locomotives, ut what about oil burning steamers?

    • @Amtrak458
      @Amtrak458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately, it's propane only. Every steamer must only be propane. A lot of people at this meet had coal and oil fired engines they were able to convert to propane for the week, oil being easier than coal.

    • @awildjared1396

    • @algrayson8965

      I don't know about the specific ones in the video but digital radio control is the simplest to set up.

    • @Amtrak458
      @Amtrak458  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some of them can be setup that way, yes. So both of them are able to provide power. However the most common setups are either one of them is simply a "dummy" which is just a non-powered model of a locomotive, used for show. Or the second option is having a powered locomotive and a hydraulic dummy in which it's still a dummy locomotive but has a hydraulic system and uses that system to provide hydraulic power therefore giving the "married" set of locomotives more power altogether.

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      What for? Amtrak already has it. So do tourist railroads all over, and excursion trains.
      The usual ride-on gages are 7¼” (USA east coast, Britain, Europe), 7½” (USA), 15” (Britain, USA), 16” (USA). Many other gages are or have been used, some by only one location. 4¾” and 5” are used for trestle tracks. Narrow gage and wide gage trains are scaled to match the track that is chosen or available, like 2’, 3’, 3’6”, metre (3’3⅜”), 5’3”, 5’6”.

      Either gas hydraulic or electric motors.

    • @algrayson8965
      @algrayson8965 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Miniature Train Co. (3” scale, 15” and 16” gages) used Wisconsin V4 air-cooled industrial engines with a hydraulic coupling (torque converter?) to shafts driving gearboxes on the axles.
      Some riding lawnmower engines that are used with hydraulic drive are good if they will fit.
      Battery-electric has some popularity.
