Losing Weight On Medications Just Got Easier - Should You Take A Pill for Weight Loss?

  • There's been a lot of hype about weight loss medications lately. Are they for you? Psychiatric medications are guilty of causing enough weight gain to push someone into the category of obese. Today there are several different types of medications available to treat obesity in adults. I talk about some of them in this video such as semaglutine, liraglutide, and phentermine.

I'm also from France and I can confirm this is relatable for any adverse event. Many psychiatrists will either blame it on patients, or claim that it will eventually fade out (which is particularly untrue regarding weight gain). If they just cared enough to inform patients properly, the weight gain could sometimes be mitigated before it's truly problematic.

For me it was ADHD and depression, the compulsivity of ADHD and self esteem issues of depression meant I was turning to sugary and unhealthy foods for dopamine and comfort. As soon as I addressed the ADHD and depression through medication and treatment I started losing weight, eating more healthily and exercising more. Just injecting a drug that induces weight loss, lap band surgery ect would not have worked for me without treating the underlying issue of over eating as soon as I stopped the treatment, or expanded the lap band I would have just been back to gaining weight.

For years I have struggled with emotional eating and binge eating. After taking this for a week I stopped eating the junk food. I also am not eating all day and night. I have some body dysmorphia. I am 5’8” tall and while I don’t need to be 140 lbs with abs, it’s considered sexier than when I am 173 lbs . . . even if neither is medically “obese.” Substances that help me lose weight (ADD amphetamines like Vyvanse, some SSRIs like Luvox, bupropion or elective substances like nicotine) all tempt my body dysmorphia independent of mental wellness. Likewise, I avoid medications that make me gain weight (Prozac, Abilify) for reasons beyond them just being suboptimal for my mental health.

@@TheHorseshoePartyUK I agree that chasing after the positive can be a negative experience if you are chasing after getting high or having affairs for example. Though I believe if you are chasing something like learning a useful skill it could still be positive.
I also agree that accepting something negative like accepting that you have a problem could be positive. Because then you can work on it. The problem is if you say something like, "I am an asshole. I accept it and I don't need to grow or change." Or, "the neighbor is beating her children badly but that is just how the world is. I won't say anything." It could also lead to suicide or even homicide in extreme examples.
The third problem that I have with it is that it encourages thinking in extremes. Things are rarely all positive or all negative. So these statements are overly simplified. Most experiences are a mix of positive, negative and neutral.

I asked my doctor for ozempic. I am also in and out of pre diabetes. I've had all the eating disorders since age 14. I am currently 100lbs overweight, and that's with losing 40 lbs from a private diet doc who only prescribes phentermine.... which sucks because it's short-term help, and I've noticed it's not effective anymore.
Many obesity experts I watch are all for long-term or life-long medicated treatment because they consider it a chronic disease. Most doctors still tell me just simply eat and work out... like that's I've been doing since I was 8 yrs old ... I am also a yo-yo dieter. I am currently scheduling a gallbladder removal. And I have NAFLD.
I have anxiety, but I don't know if I want to get evaluated for medication.
Anyway... it's disappointing... my doctor did offer gastric bypass or continue a healthy lifestyle change. I rather have medication that would help. Which sucks. Maybe the USA should outlaw high fructose corn syrup

As a obesity doctor, most of my patients can achieve their weight loss goals with lifestyle changes without medication however I agree that the GLP-1 drugs are great for bridge therapy while adapting the necessary lifestyle changes that can allow us to achieve our goals.
It’s important to remember that most people who use GLP-1 drugs regain their weight within a year of stopping which is why lifestyle changes are the most sustainable way to maintain our weight loss goals 😊
Also keep in mind that if we don’t maintain those lifestyle changes we will regain weight as seen with the medication’s
It is also clear that some people will make lifestyle changes and just need a little extra help from the medication‘s to control their appetite and in those cases having this new group of medication‘s can be a game changer.
I just released an animated video on this topic on my channel this week

I've been losing weight very slowly by calorie counting. It's taken me 14 months to lose 30 lbs. I definitely want to lose probably up to 50 more pounds, however I am scared of having loose skin. This is partly why I've gone so slowly, that combined with I think that it will help me maintain my habits easier if I don't restrict myself too much. I've already lost fullness in my face that has been freaking me out because I look older than I did a year ago. I also know I'll have loose skin to some degree no matter what but maybe this snail pace will help.
Before I went on any psychiatric medication, I was so depressed and anxious that I was barely eating it all and was always told how good I look. After getting on medication, which saved my life, I gained a lot of weight very rapidly and I've been obese ever since.

I agree with changing eating habits but the thing is, the GLP1s remove that food noise from your head. So while you’re on it, you WANT to make healthier choices, you aren’t craving the same old junk food.
So it seems that It doesn’t matter how healthy you get while on them, once you remove the drug and the food noises comes back, the weight will too.

Growing up, I got lots of distorted, negative messages from my father saying people who are overweight are fat, lazy people, who have no self control.
I even went to an eating disorder treatment for restricting and binging when I was 5' 6" and 135 pounds.
I later learned that many other things can be causes for weight gain. Medications and health problems being the biggest culprits.
Then, I learned first hand from years of psychiatric medication intervention and management. I am now dealing with three or four health problems that come with obesity.
I am still trying to figure out how to heal my body- still - after my initial psychiatric diagnosis just about almost 20 years ago.
    Ugh.

When I'm unwell and have low energy it's easy to skip the healthy part of the meal and jump right to the carbs that will fill me up.

Thank you for providing the information for awareness. I know you are not a video editor but a doctor but I I believe this video will reach a better benefit if the warning of these medications are emphasized early. I watched your entire video and I couldn’t help sense your connotation rather leaning to over positive to consumers or in this case your patients. As these meds are prescription based, the highlight would be keen on the doctor’s morals and strong logic to make that easy decision for the long term impact on patients or in this case, we can never know what the side effects of these new meds. And weight loss medications could have impact even more severe towards patients with mental disorders. To fix any problems when it’s far too late, this tends to be the issue. People love quick fix rather than a long term commitments . I always admire doctors who raised the awareness in the right way and be that filter for the patients

I’ve read a lot of articles about this Wegovy which sounds promising but not only is it probably NOT covered by Medicare, but the demand is greater than the supply and even if one COULD afford it you just can’t find it from what I’ve been reading.

Important also to note the fat bias not only in general society, but also in healthcare in many places - I understand that it's particularly bad in the US and France. This in itself is very damaging to mental health. BMI is incredibly inaccurate, but is heavily relied upon to determine healthy and unhealthy weight.
For anyone interested in learning more, I highly recommend the podcast, Maintenance Phase which talks about fat bias and it's effects, diets, science around "obesity" and impact in health - focussing maintenance on the US, but alot is still incredibly relevant for those of us in other countries.

I'm not a doctor- can only speak from life experience. But, as someone who was already fit/was eating a healthy diet/was at a healthy weight before I went on psychiatric medication, my drugs caused me to gain 50 lbs so after years of not being able to lose the weight despite exercising and dieting, I begged my doctor to put me on Metformin after reading journal articles about it and I'm already losing weight in just 3 months. I think it varies for every individual. In my case I was already healthy and I needed the weight loss drug because I'm not able to come off my medications. However, some people can lose the weight without weight loss drugs but psychiatric drugs affect everyone differently. (Metformin is also not FDA approved for weight loss but weight loss is a side effect since some psychiatric drugs cause pre diabetes which makes you insulin resistant. Metformin increases the healthy "brown fat" as well that the doctor mentions in her video. If I had known about these newer drugs though that can cause even more weight loss than Metformin, then I would have asked to be put on one of them instead of Metformin).

I needed to lose weight before I could have my knee replacement surgery. I used Noom. The thing I liked about this program was that it worked on the psychology of eating rather than just focusing on what you can and can't eat. I lost about 50lbs on it in the beginning and a year and a half later I still use so much of what I learned when I hit a set back or find myself struggling. Much like you, they give you tools to figure out why that struggle or set back is causing you difficulty. So much of weight loss is psychological not just cravings or bad habits. I'm not a sponsor for them but I did have good results and not only did it help me with my weight loss journey but also with dealing with a painful divorce during the same time. There is no quick fix to weight loss and understanding the why's and how's goes so much farther than "you just need to do this and that" for rapid weight loss. Rapid weight loss rarely stays off unless you change your habits and understand how those habits came to be.

I worried about becoming addicted and what psychological affects would occur during use and upon stopping it. It triggered my anxiety, insomnia, and agitation.

In recent years, especially after starting Seroquel, I gained so much weight. I now weigh 108kg (238lbs). With my height of 194cm (6'4") I have a BMI of 28. Granted, my daily activity is very low due to being scared of leaving the house. But I don't eat much either. I typically average between 1600 to 2000kcal a day. Yet my weight keeps going up, and up, and up. Which is fueling my self-hatred and suicidal ideation and starting to cause an eating disorder where I prefer to starve myself rather than to eat out of fear of gaining even more weight. I would give everything I have to go back to weighing 90-92kg (202lbs). But I definitely do not want to ever experience galstones. Should I discuss these types of medication with my GP or Psychiatrist?

You should definitely talk to you doctor about your weight gain on Seroquel that is slowly leading you to an eating disorder. I feel you because I gained weight too on Seroquel. It's not easy to lose weight with an office job. But I try to stay active with a TH-cam workout at home to not make it worse. Hope everything will go well for you and don't let your weight bring you down ❤

It's good that there are more options now.
I lost my sense of hunger some 14 months ago and remembered in time that I could try intermittent fasting that way. Funny enough, before that I've eaten more even not being hungry, but having a time frame helps a lot. I'm not sure if it helped my mental health because war, but the scales don't lie and something is really happening :)

I'm only 5ft tall on a good day, and my highest weight is 180 (it fluctuates by like 15lbs) I have a decent exercise schedule --1 hour of walking every day-- and I only eat once a day. I've always wanted to lose weight to feel better about myself... I do take Zoloft but it can only help me so much, y'know? I've spoken with my doctor about wanting to lose weight, but she only ever says exercise more; she doesn't seem to be worried because my blood pressure is 'perfect' (averaging 110/72 and lower). She seems to treat my weight loss goals as cosmetic. But you can't be obese and healthy, right? I'm a little confused

Being 5' and 180 lbs is NOT healthy...it IS if you're working out and most of that IS muscle but I doubt it...

BMI is incredibly inaccurate and no, excess fat does not always equate to poor health. However, I also understand that your doctor's dismissal of your concerns to be unhelpful. I found listening to the podcast, Maintenance Phase to be very helpful in understanding just how damaging it is, our societal pressure to be thin, including causing further weight gain. I find them funny too, so also very entertaining to listen to.
I do understand how a weight gain side effect might not be something you can easily live with, especially if it is very significant and that's something your doctor should take seriously, it's your body after all.
Other than that, you might want to consider if eating once a day might be a disadvantage, if you are hungry the rest of the day your body may have adjusted your metabolism to make up for the starvation periods. Fasting needs to be done carefully if you are going to do it, as it might have the opposite effect of what you're intending. Everyone's body is different and there is no one size fits all to weight loss. What is universally healthy is highly nutritious food (a lot of whole foods, minimum to no processed foods) and excercise (education might be needed to learn how to excercise safely for your individual body and fitness level).
If we focus more on our health while learning to love our bodies, I feel that is much more beneficial.
As someone in her late 40s I wish that I had appreciated the body I had in my 20s, I wasn't unhealthily fat, but upbringing and society made me feel like I was and that led to a bad relationship with food, leading to calorie restrictive dieting and binge eating, which only made things worse. I look back on photos and realise how beautiful I was. And in 20 Years time I'll think the same about the body I have now, so I'm trying my best to love it. Yes, I need to be fitter, yes I need to eat more nutrient dense and less processed foods and I need to avoid binge eating. I know from past experience that when my mood improves I cook healthy meals, I am physically active and I don't binge eat, so my priority is improving my mood.
Self esteem is very important, but may I suggest that trying to improve it by attempting to conform to society's idea of beauty is a losing battle.
Good luck in your journey of improving your mental and physical health ❤️

During the initial 60 days, I shed 30 pounds by using Rybelsus at doses of 3mg and 7mg. Yet, in the subsequent 60 days, I've observed no further weight loss while consuming Rybelsus 14mg, and my hunger levels remain unchanged. Is this lack of progress typical, and would it be wise to persist with Rybelsus 14mg? Thank you

It's really hard to get your insurance to pay for it. My husband was on Mounjaro through a discount program. They canceled the discount program and he wasn't able to finish his year. They tried to get some that were fda approved cleared through our insurance and they refused. He's lost a hundred pounds and is still obese, but insurance is refusing to pay for it. He's so depressed about it. I wish there was a way to get it cleared for him through insurance. I'm going to appeal, but it is the equivalent of writing a research paper with studies and sources. I have 4 kids, and he finishing his master's and working full time.
