  • in this video, i demonstrate how i believe to be the most humane way to euthanize a goldfish. i hope this demonstration is educational to you, should the need arise.
    FAQ: please read before commenting:
    Q: why did the fish need to be euthanized?
    A: the fish suffered external tumors all his life which were removed during several procedures. he then suffered an internal tumor which grew to press on his brain, causing him to lose swimming control, appetite, sight and other senses.
    Q: why don't you just cut his head off, bash his head flat or throw him in boiling/ice water?
    A: there are several ways to end the life of a fish, my choices are humane to the fish which are also peaceful to the aquarist.
    Q: why not flush the fish?
    A: because an ill/dying/dead fish or a decomposing fish release toxins/bacteria/parasites into the water. the correct method is to either bury the remains or dispose of them in the garbage for collection. polluting our waterways or drinking water is irresponsible.

    This is in no way causing the fish any suffering. Anyone saying so is crazy. I’ve studied vet tech for awhile and the clove oil isn’t harming just sedating. This woman actually cares about her fish. Most people just let the fish die on its own saying it’s just a fish etc. etc. this woman is actually taking the time to ensure her fish doesn’t have to suffer. You don’t see many people actually care like this. Never see anyone humanly euthanize a fish until now.

    • @onefineday111
      @onefineday111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If the fish was suffering, it would struggle a bit when the clove oil is added. When fish are in pain or being poisoned they tend to become frantic and start swimming, flailing, or even jump (hence why fish in tanks that have a build up of ammonia often jump out of the tank.

    I heard that clove oil is commonly used as fish anesthetic when they undergo surgery. So essentially what she's doing is giving the little guy an anesthetic overdose. It's similar to what's done to cats and dogs - pentobarbital (Euthanyl) is commonly used and and it's just a anesthetic drug with a very small safety range.
    Anesthesia is merely keeping something living close to death's door without opening that door.

      FlowerEmblem But fish don't feel pain

    • @FlowerEmblem
      @FlowerEmblem 6 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Magicdolphin30 It's under debate. I will not firmly take either side, but it has been stated that fish appear to not feel pain the way humans do, but that can be interpreted in different ways - that they don't feel pain entirely, or comparing them anatomically to humans is like comparing apples to oranges. At the very least, though, they can be stressed or discomforted, which is why she's choosing to end this one's life.

    • @Kairos_Akuma
      @Kairos_Akuma 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      And? They still feel stressed and ALL Pets should be handled AND "released" with as little stress as possible. Fish are Pets too, so they should have the same level of dignity in releasing them as a Cat or a Dog.

      pentobarbital is quite a bit different to clove oil FFS.
      poor thing was screaming silently for 10 minutes before succouring to chemical poisoning.
      a small nail into his brain would be far more humane (but that would mean she'd actually have to FEEL his death.)

      I know that the Vancouver Aquarium has done fish surgery on their rockfish for egg binding (eggs stuck in the body, birds can get it too). They've also placed a false eye in another fish because its one eye was missing and other fish were attacking it because it showed vulnerability on that side. They're really big on ocean conservation and rescue, too, so fish surgery is a part of that. Medical research facilities have also used zebrafish in their studies and do surgery on those, too.

    My nephew wanted a pet to play with and my sister, for some reason, decided that a fish would be okay for a 4 year old. After only weeks he fell terribly ill and my sister talked about throwing it away/killing it. I started researching this type of fish, analyzed him, wrote the symptoms down and made a list of products they could buy to make the fish better. But it was expensive, too much work and so on. I looked through blogs of fish owners and found a girl with the same type of fish, having the same problems and what she did at home to bring its health up. I talked with my sister and talked and in the end they decided to give it a try. I tried to explain why every step is necessary, but they only did like half of what I recommended... thankfully only a handful of days later the fish started eating and in a week or so his fins grew back and then its tail in another week. He is so cheerful now and eats well. But I still wish people would realize that fish are animals too, precious ones at that.

    Crying my eyes out watching this. My 15 year old goldfish is not thriving in life anymore and I’m so glad I found this lovely explanation because google is so blunt about the process of using clove oil. I’ve loved him for the whole 15 years and it’s going to be so sad to see him go but it’s selfish to let him continue. Rest in paradise, Leon. 👼❤️

I was never sure which fish disease he had, and I tried several treatments but nothing helped. Over the last few weeks, he stopped eating completely, his color was going very pale, and he barely moved. I've battled a year to save Spot, but now it's time to stop the struggling and let him rest. When I say my final goodbye to Spot today, I will be losing another little piece of my brother's life, as well. I thank you for talking me through the process and showing me how. my 7 year old fish died 2 nights ago. i knew he was dying... over the course of a few days he went from swimming as he normally would and coming up for food to lying completely on his side, then jerking around trying to swim... i didn't know what to do. i was at a complete loss. i tried to help him get to the top for food by using a net but nothing worked. i have been so sad since i woke up to find him completely lifeless. my family keep poking fun cos i cried. i've experienced the same thing with my past fish. i had 6 total, all lived long lives.
    anyway this was very heartbreaking to watch. i don't know if it was a cruel thing i did by leaving him and letting him die instead of putting him down. i don't know if he was in any pain and i just ignorantly let him suffer.. i'm crying as i write this. i feel so terrible. i wish i could have done more.

    For the people on here that said to use ice this actually turns out to be a very painful way for fish to die (unfortunately I used this method in the past before finding this out). This is because when water freezes it increases in volume, so as the fish gets colder every cell in their body expands until it bursts. This normally starts happening while the fish is still conscious...
    Here's methods that are/aren't recommended by the RSCPA. (Clove oil is recommended, freezing is not);

    Thank you for this video. I unfortunately just had to put down our 9 year old comet goldfish. He was about 13" from head to tail and has moved with us across the country. My wife got him in college when they did an experiment on them, and she decided to keep it.
    A few weeks ago, he somewhat stopped eating, and just sat in the corner. We set him up in a large hospital tank and fed him by hand to monitor his health. He seemed like he was recovering until maybe a week later he seemed to have difficulty sitting upright. I believe he had swim bladder issues, but the kind where he wasn't buoyant and would just sink and sit. He was still incredibly strong and would try swim hard, and keep himself upright, but he would just slide over and be on his side, clearly breathing. I watched him struggle for 2 days hoping he'd get better, but he could not hold himself upright. He'd occasionally find a spot to sit up, but it'd only last a few minutes.
    I decided tonight the the quality of his life degraded to much and I didn't want to see him like this anymore. I decided to do some research and stumbled upon your video. You seemed to love your fish as we did ours. we gave him his first dose, to where he was heavily sedated and then said our goodbyes. We then gave him his final dose and I sat and watched to time the intervals between his last breaths. He continued to take a breath about every 2 minutes for the next 10 minutes so I upped the dosage again. I watched him take his last breath and watched him for another 15min to make sure he was in a better place. We wrapped him up in some paper towel and took him to the river side where we buried him.
    We loved that fish, and I'm completely teary eyed writing this, but I just wanted to say thank you for helping make his last moments hopefully painless and peaceful.

    It's never pleasant to have to euthanize an animal yourself, but I'm glad she did it this way. My mom had a dog who was riddled with tumors and I had to do it at home for her because she couldn't afford to have the vet do it at the time. I was a teenager. It was terrible.

      Jan Malke why would you ask this? That dog was her best friend in the world and she was sobbing the entire time. I would never make my mother be the one to do that. That dog meant the world to her. She didn't "make" me do it. I did it so she wouldn't have to magnify the pain she was already in.

    • @sinandcyanide7505
      @sinandcyanide7505 6 ปีที่แล้ว +165

      judy funnie I'm not entirely sure that answering this will go over well but here you go. I didn't shoot her or did anything else violent. I gave her some valium and pain medications and just made sure I gave her enough that she wouldn't just wake up sick.
      Before anyone jumps on my back, I used what we guess available and tried to make it as calm and painless as I could. The dog waa suffering greatly, as was my mother. If you're thinking I shouldn't have done it, you're saying I should have let her lie there and die a slow and painful death over a period of probably a week or more.

It didn't seem like my fish went down easily to be anesthetized and it broke my heart. I ended up adding the second portion of oil pretty quick because I didn't want to prolong any uncomfortable effects on the fish
