Cassie; My connection to this movie goes deeper than you can possibly know. Suffice it to say that while time travel may not be possible, this kind of love and devotion is. I knew my "Elise" in 1978. We had only one year together, but it was the happiest time of my life. I re-read her letters recently and all the feelings of love and warmth returned, full force. It may have been only one year, but some moments of joy can weigh against a whole lifetime.

It's one of the few romantic films men like because it's told from the man's perspective. That's actually quite rare. I watched it when I was a kid and it always stayed with me 💖And John Barry's score is incredible!
I saw it as a teen and it has always been the only love story that I truly liked. I must have seen it a dozen times but would never have admitted it to other men. I had a serious crush on Jane Seymour and specifically with the modesty of her character in the film even more than her obvious beauty.
This was the absolutely favorite movie of my mother who died just last December at 81. She had dementia for the last few years of her life, but when she would listen to the soundtrack for this movie, it helped her remember. She adored this film to the point that she had her pictures taken in a style that would imitate the one of Jane Seymour that Chris falls in love with in the red room. We played main theme at her memorial service and it brought back so many memories of my life with her in the 80's and how I would always buy her the soundtrack when it was on a new media: first cassette, then CD and finally even an LP (record) that she could play on a turntable. When my step-father died in 2019, (also of dementia) it was a huge blow to her as he was her knight in shining armor and when she finally passed I always imagined that final scene of the movie but just in reverse with Wayne (my step father) welcoming her to their eternity. RIP Wayne and Reba.
I watched this movie in a theater 43 years ago and have never forgotten it. Not being a fan of romance, I went because it was written by one of my favorite science fiction and horror writers, Richard Matheson, and I was blown away by the beauty of the story. The performances by Christopher Reeves, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer are superb, but it is the whole atmosphere of the film (soundtrack, cinematography, set design, direction) that makes it a masterpiece. Critics and the general public never understood it, but in the long run "Somewhere in Time" won over everything and everyone, building a well-deserved cult reputation. And as far as I know, every year that hotel holds a party during which guests and staff dress up as they did in the early 1900s to remember the days when the film was shot right there, and actors and others who attended the production are often guests of honor. So, is it better to be a blockbuster that makes billions in a single season only to be forgotten among many more of the same kind of movies, or to be a small movie that few people will see at first but that will remain forever in the memory of generations? You can guess my answer.
I normally do not watch romance movies but this came out when I was a kid and the concept of time travel fascinated me. It also blew my mind of the idea that they are forever trapped in a time loop. Now that he has gone back to the past and given her the watch, she will continue in her time until she meets him again and gives him the watch, continuing the loop. And the watch itself is a bootstrap paradox, having no beginning, never bought, never made. It only has ever existed in the loop. This movie is deep on so many levels.
I still remember when my mom explained this very aspect of the story to me when I was a young child, long before I actually watched the film. I was absolutely fascinated. My parents got my name from this movie, by the way, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for it.
The other big point of the plot is the concept of reality itself. What makes reality and what makes a dream? Can the 2 states interface? Watch the movie ALTERED STATES with John Hurt, where a man wills himself into different states of existence.
So weird that you're posting this reaction just a couple days after I was on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel. It's truly like stepping back into time when you go there, no cars even allowed on the island (they made special exceptions for the filming of the modern-day scenes in this movie.) The people of the island are clearly quite proud of this movie being filmed there, and they sell movie memorabilia to this day.
This movie is so hugely popular that people get together at The Grand Hotel every year, dressed for that period of time in the movie and they celebrate the film, reenacting scenes from it.
I met Jane Seymour in the Pellston airport after one of her visits to Mackinac Island. I live near here and was waiting for my husbands flight. She is so tiny, so beautiful and very nice.
The man who wrote the score had recently lost both his parents. So, not only was he a great writer, but he had the heartache in the music. It is a beautiful score.
This was filmed on Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. Great place to vacation. No vehicles only bikes and horses. The hotel is there and you can stay in it

This was one of my mom's favorite movies. For years she couldn't find it on DVD but I found one at a flea market over spring break one year in college and bought it for her. She passed a couple weeks ago and I found the DVD when cleaning out her house, I couldn't stop crying. Thank you for this review! Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini," which is the music Richard and old Elise play on their record players and he hums to Elise on the row boat and plays on her music box wasn't written until 1934. A clue to her that he was from the future.

@@classicslover I think most people don't go because it can be really expensive. I couldn't afford the higher priced suites, but it was just me, so that was okay. Of course, some of the expense was that I purchased circa 1912 tuxedo to wear for dinner. But, all in all, it was well worth it. There are no motor vehicles allowed on Makinac. It has a real old-timey feel to it.

The book "Bid Time Return", which this is based on, is one of my all time favorites. In the book Richard Collier has just been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. The symptoms go away when he's in the past, but come back when he returns -- which make his death a lot more plausible. Also, the author, Richard Matheson, came up with this idea when he saw a photograph of the actress Maud Adams (1872-1953) and developed a serious crush on her. All the biographical info about Elise McKinna is actually from Adams' life.
I really prefer the movie over the Book. I didn't feel the romántica atmosphere of the movie in the Book, although the explanation of why she was expecting him is by far better explained in the Book.

Great !! The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island Mich. was the setting for this movie. My Mother🥰 & I had tea there when we did a bus tour of the Eastern Prov. (Can.) . and into the some of the eastern states In '92. She passed in 2020 at 101 yrs. Great memory!! You'll love the movie.
No motorized vehicles are allowed on the island. People go everywhere by horse or bicycle. They had to get special permission to bring two in for the shot of Reeves driving up to the hotel.
We stayed there for our anniversary and it was amazing. We had tea and listened to a harpist, attended a poetry reading and an art exhibit, everywhere in the hotel there are little nooks and crannies of beautiful things, we dressed up for dinner which was awesome. Anyone looking for a package for honeymoon or anniversary this was worth every penny

I was so happy to see that you reviewed this movie "Somewhere In Time". I'm not the biggest fan of romantic movies but this is hands down my favorite romantic movie! What's unique and stands out about this romantic movie is the fact that it is the man's perspective of pursuing and being with the woman that he is destined by fate to be with for eternity. The time travel aspect makes it even more interesting. The movie is both beautiful and tragic. Their fate is destin to be together in a constant loop of time over and over and over again for eternity. The soundtrack of the movie is beautiful. Christopher Reeves stated the reason he did this movie is because he didn't want to be stereotyped as Superman and he wanted the venture out and do some different venues pertaining to movies. Again what a wonderful choice for a movie review!

The paradox of this movie is the watch. The older Elise gives the watch to Richard, who travels back in time and he leaves the watch with her. And it repeats ... Where did the watch originally come from? And yes, the Grand Hotel is a real place. I've stayed there. It's on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Also, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island. So the producers had to get a special permit every time Richard drives up the road to the hotel. The original story was set at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. However, when they tried to make the movie there, they found it impossible to avoid all of the modern development to portray the hotel in 1912. So they moved the location to the Grand Hotel, which was built in 1887 - one year before the Del.
I understand, I lost my fiance of half a decade while I was serving in the Marines. I still keep all our things. I've tried moving on and Ive done well, I've found someone who makes me so happy which I never thought I would find again. But now I am always so terrified of losing her, now that I'm away again overseas and we have been planning to get married when I return those thoughts always come back. I don't know if these feelings will ever truly go away.
The actor who plays William is an amazing actor, the late Christopher Plummer, who has been in some amazing films, such as The Sound of Music and Knives Out.

I watched this movie in the theatre when it first came out and was instantly swept in the wonder of the romance between Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. From a fan point of view, I fell in love with Jane Seymour after seeing that and her brief role in the original Battlestar Galactica. Stunningly beautiful, but always elegant and charming. The concept of time travel through hypnosis wasn't a new idea at this time as it had been theorised to be possible since at least the late 1940s. The first I had heard of it was from reading several old Batman comics books from the 1950s, where Batman and Robin would occasionally have adventures in other time periods, usually leaving a good impression while inspiring others to take up the idea of altruistic fighters throughout history. It's a shame Somewhere In Time was never a hit, but a small blessing that it's become so fondly remembered by so many. There's even a large fan group who meet in that same hotel every year to share their love for the movie.

One day, I turned to my wife and asked her, "How do you know you're not really 89 years old with dementia, thinking it's 2019 and you're in your thirties? It could really be the year 2078. I could be trying to get you to come back to the present for a moment of clarity." That messed her up for days. She and I are both authors, so we have wild imaginations.
The series Ordinary Joe also brought up the idea of the multiverse. That every possibility for your life is playing out. That can blow your mind even more, because the possibilities are endless. You could have been born 10 years earlier or later or with a different father/mother.... endless possibilites....
I love the nuance that that picture of her haunted him so hard, because she was actually looking at him when it was taken. He could feel her literally looking at him.
I was 7 years old when this came out and it has been my favorite movie since then. Little did I know that I was already a Richard Matheson fan due to the original Twilight Zones. He wrote a few of the most iconic ones like the Gremlin on the wing of the plane, the fortune telling penny machine etc etc. He also wrote "What Dreams May Come" (my 2nd fav movie and hands down my favorite book). "I am Legend" "Stir of Echoes" etc. I joined S.I.T. Club and spoke a lot with Matheson's daughter and she gave me a lot of info on her late father and how the names in his stories were his way of getting his children involved because some of the characters were her and her brother's names. Etc etc. She spoke directly with me because I did not act like the typical fan of her father. I actually respected him and his craft and read a lot of his stories/ knew his Twilight Zone history and his slew of other films. 😊 One bit of info is the price to stay in Elise's room in the Grand Hotel for one night was waaaaaaay out of my league. Spielberg's first major directing movie gig (albeit for television) was based on a Matheson story (Duel). I'm glad you liked it and this movie is finally getting the respect it deserves. For a while there you could not find this movie anywhere. A lot of people are Matheson fans they just do not know it yet. 🤣
This is such a good movie and really showed the range Reeve had as an actor. Outside of the Superman movies, this is his most memorable movie. Little known fact, Jane Seymour and Reeve really did have a brief romance during the filming of this movie and stayed lifelong friends. She even named one of her sons after Chris Reeve.
I thought this was a great blow against the "I won't be type-cast like George felt he was" films, where "civilian" Chris appears as a then-ordinary fashioned chap, and then pulls off that mask to reveal his handsome self.
Reeve was much more of a theatre actor, so even though his movie career didn't go the way people thought it would because he was so typecast as Superman, he still continued to do plays. Then of course he ended up doing much more important work later on, a truly inspiring man.

This is my most favourite romantic movie. I have not seen anything more moving emotionally in this genre. It leaves you with heartbreak, but still allows the love of two people to continue at the end.
I’ve loved this film for 40 years. I’ve been to the Grand Hotel several times, either on vacation or for conferences. Mackinac Island is a pain to get to but once you’re there it’s lovely. No motor vehicles allowed, only bicycles and horse drawn carriages. It’s a very different pace.

Was a rather haunting show..... I remember when I watched this when I was very young.. Really got me thinking about the nature of time and reality, and willpower.
The film is based on a novel by Richard Matheson called "Bid Time Return". It had been out of print for several years by the time the film was released. It was put back into print under the title of the movie, and given a second life. There are a few differences from the film. The past year setting is 1896, not 1912, and the hotel is the Hotel Coronado in San Diego, a real place, just like the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. This is my mother's favorite film. She made a pencil-drawing portrait of Christopher Reeve once and sent it to him. He sent it back autographed. For her birthday once, I bought my mother a first edition of the novel.
One of the very few times I've noticed an error in a movie (some TH-cam channels have dozens to intrigue you) was here. The Grand Hotel's American flags in 1912 have 50 stars. Even as a lifelong Canadian I knew that was an oversight... though I noticed it only on my 5th or 6th viewing...

As a young boy in my early teens I watched this with my father on cable ('83 or '84) and it became our favorite movie. Before watching, I believed time travel was possible which made this movie so special to me. I'm not into love stories, but it made me believe anything was possible. I ended up working at the Grand Hotel for a summer and it is as beautiful as it appeared in the movie. Watching it still moves me to this day, almost 40 yrs later!
This was my wifes most favorite movie . She is in heaven now, but I would like to think the ending would be our story. Laura Roberts was played by one of old Hollywood’s greats, Teresa Wright. She played Lou Gehrig’s wife in “Pride of the Yankees,” was the star of Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt”, and was nominated for Oscars for her first three film roles (and won Best Supporting Actress for one of them, in “Mrs. Miniver”). But honestly, it’s hard to take your eyes off Jane Seymour in this movie. She was beautiful enough to be a Bond Girl in “Live and Let Die” in 1973, but in this film, she’s just otherworldly. The screenwriter (and author of the original book) Richard Matheson, was an incredibly prolific writer, especially in Hollywood. He wrote the original story for “I am Legend” and “The Incredible Shrinking Man”, “What Dreams May Come” (a Robin Williams movie that should be on your list), *16* episodes of “The Twilight Zone”… Check out his Wikipedia page, it’s the only way to get a handle on it.

In the summer of 2005, I visited the island on a vacation with the love of my life and we looked around the grounds of the hotel but couldn't afford to stay there. It was supposed to cost $1,000 a night. She said that she would return someday when she could afford to book a reservation. I wonder if she ever did. Good night, Ms. D., wherever you are.

Richard Matheson had quite a resume: - 'Somewhere in Time' ('Bid Time Return' as a novel) - 'I Am Legend', which has been filmed 3 times...'The Last Man On Earth' with Vincent Price, 'The Omega Man' with Charleton Heston, and 'I Am Legend' with Will Smith - 'The Incredible Shrinking Man' - 'Duel', which was the basis for Steven Spielberg's first film for TV - 'What Dreams May Come' which starred Chris Reeve's BFF Robin Williams - The Original Series 'Star Trek' episode "The Enemy Within" - 16 episodes of 'The Twilight Zone' (1959-64), one of which "Steel" was based on a story that became the film 'Real Steel' with Hugh Jackman. This is just the tip of the iceberg of his output as a writer of novels, short stories, and screenplays. There are a few differences from the novel: 1) Richard was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which makes his eventual death a little more plausible. However, not as romantic. It also makes the time travel aspect seem less real and more hallucinogenic. 2)Elise doesn't witness Richard getting thrown back to his own time, she is asleep when it happens. 3) The timeline is altered as the book takes place in 1971 and 1896. 3) The pocket watch is not in the story at all. 4) The setting is the Hotel del Coronado in California, not The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. 5) Richard's coming was foretold to Elise by two psychics, not by Robinson. He would also later direct fourteen episodes of the CW series 'Smallville', about the young Clark Kent before he becomes Superman, doing a few episodes per season from season 3 through to season 10. Jane Seymour has been in the press recently as she was close friends with the late Olivia Newton-John recalling her memories of their friendship since the 1970s. She still looks amazing. I was fortunate enough to be on Mackinac when this was being filmed (I was 12!). I saw the dramatic scene where Jane Seymour screams "Richard!!!" and bolts up the grand stairway to him. Unforgettable. Bit of trivia: the man that comments "Astonishing!" (as Richard leaves the bathroom after shaving) is Richard Matheson, the author of the novel & the screenplay. Food for thought: Richard gets the gold watch from the elder Elise. He takes it back in time, where it is left in her possession. Thus, she can give it back to him in 1972. Where he will take it back to the past and leave it with her. So she can return it to him in 1972. Ad infinitum. Where in hell did this watch originally come from?!?!
Seymour revealed she and Reeve actually were "madly in love" during the filming of this movie, and single, and all of that was in their performances throughout most of the film. But towards the end of filming, he found out his ex-gf at the time, Gae Exton, was pregnant, and that this was why they didn't end up forming a relationship. And he got the call right before the day they needed to film both that love scene and those moments they seemed happy before Richard gets pulled back to the future. Seymour said she was struggling and telling herself not to cry at times since it would've ruined the performance. (Why was the pregnancy a problem? Well, it was 1980 and still a much more conservative time (relatively speaking) than society has since grown and we've grown accustomed to.) Reeve ultimately publicly remained or reconnected with Exton, and stayed together for another 7 years before an amicable separation. But Seymour spoke highly of Reeve and they reconnected as friends after the accident that left him paralyzed. She named one of her sons after him.
I just learned about this about a month ago and found it to be so sad. Their chemistry was amazing, and Christopher said that Jane was his favorite leading lady. I was confused about that considering how often he worked with Margot Kidder while working with Jane on only one film but now it's understandable. It's such a shame that they didn't get a chance at happiness but it's wonderful that they remained close until his death.

It's Mackinaw island in Michigan where the upper and lower Peninsulas meet. The Grand hotel is about 140 years old, and no cars are allowed on the Island. Everyone travels on foot, bicycle, or horsedrawn carriages. It also has a British fort from the 1800's located at the highest point on the island. Lots of tourists from Michigan and quite a few from Chicago vacation there every summer. It's a wonderful place to visit. Jane Seymore has been back many times to commemorate the making of the movie.

Catching up on some of your videos and was curious to see your reaction to this one. I can remember first seeing this is in 1983 on TV. I was twelve years old and I can remember it left me feeling so emotional because when he finds that coin in his pocket and he yanked back of all of a sudden. It was probably the first time a movie brought me to tears. This is possibly one of favourite time travel films.
I remember being so mad by that ending. And yet I loved the movie so much and the actors and the love story I couldn't stay mad. Great love stories usually involve heartbreaks and this was sort of like this.
This is one of my father's favorites and one that I tremendously enjoy too. It's relatively simple but it's an incredible beautiful film, with a great performance by Reeve and an outstanding score by John Barry. It makes me really glad that you discovered and enjoyed this one, it's an underrated gem of the 80's.
This was also my dad's favorite film. In the first half of the 80s, pay television began in Québec, Canada. For a monthly fee, you could watch a dozen new movies in rotation, mixed with older ones. If you were interested in a movie, you could watch it two or three times a day. The videocassette (VHS or BETAmax) was not necessarily in all the houses. It was a revolution! ''Somewhere In Time'' was one of the films that marked this period, for me. Mainly because my father couldn't resist watching it whenever he could. And he was not the type to watch the same movie several times. I dare to believe that many people will have a similar story with this gem of a film.
Regarding those who recommend watching "Time After Time," I agree! What they are not telling you, though, is it is a VERY different movie than this one. "Somewhere in Time" is a romance movie through-and-through. The movie "Time After Time" is NOT a romance movie. Of course there is romance in it, and an important theme is " "what I'd do for love."But you also should be aware that there's plenty of very frightening moments, bloody murders, and so on. It's much more of a crime thriller than a romance. Another common theme, of course, is time travel, but this time the past comes to the future. All that said, it IS an excellent movie and I highly recommend it. Just don't go into it expecting the same romantic results as found in "Somewhere in Time."
The only thing "Somewhere in Time" has in common with "Time after time" is that both movies involve time travel. 2 people do become romantically involved in "Time after time" but that is true of most thrillers. Which is what "Time after time is (it's a science fiction-crime thriller). Having said that "Time after time" is a very good movie that Cassie would probably like. In fact, imo, "Time after time" is a better movie than "Somewhere in time."
I was already a fan of both Chris and Jane when I first saw this movie. The year was 1981 somewhere in the Atlantic underwater in a US submarine. We watched it from a reel to reel projector. I've been a fan of the movie ever since.

Another time travel movie you might find right up your alley 1979's "Time After Time"! It's a romance , murder mystery thriller and it also has great music like "Somewhere in Time" had.
One of a handful of Movies that has always had a VERY special place in my Heart! I became obsessed with perfecting my skills at Painting Portraits after this film and this Classical Piece of Music (by Rachmaninov) remains my absolute favorite to this day.
"Deathtrap" was really a maze of a movie, and it worked beautifully. Actually, in 1972, Michael Caine had co-starred with Laurence Olivier in a movie with a very similar plot. Ten years later, "Deathtrap" came along, with Caine playing the Olivier older-man part, and Christopher Reeve the younger. In my opinion, the movies were equally wonderful, like something from Hitchcock.
Also, Jane Seymour finally admitted recently that she and Christopher were in love during the filming. At the very end of filming, Chris’ ex girlfriend came back into the scene with the news that she was pregnant with his child . He decided it was for the best interest of the baby to try to work it out with his ex and he broke off the relationship with Jane . She was heartbroken, but they remained close friends for the remainder of his life. In fact , Jane named her child Christopher in honor of him

I knew my "Elise" in 1978. We had only one year together, but it was the happiest time of my life. I re-read her letters recently and all the feelings of love and warmth returned, full force. It may have been only one year, but some moments of joy can weigh against a whole lifetime.

I saw it as a teen and it has always been the only love story that I truly liked. I must have seen it a dozen times but would never have admitted it to other men. I had a serious crush on Jane Seymour and specifically with the modesty of her character in the film even more than her obvious beauty.
This was the absolutely favorite movie of my mother who died just last December at 81. She had dementia for the last few years of her life, but when she would listen to the soundtrack for this movie, it helped her remember. She adored this film to the point that she had her pictures taken in a style that would imitate the one of Jane Seymour that Chris falls in love with in the red room. We played main theme at her memorial service and it brought back so many memories of my life with her in the 80's and how I would always buy her the soundtrack when it was on a new media: first cassette, then CD and finally even an LP (record) that she could play on a turntable. When my step-father died in 2019, (also of dementia) it was a huge blow to her as he was her knight in shining armor and when she finally passed I always imagined that final scene of the movie but just in reverse with Wayne (my step father) welcoming her to their eternity. RIP Wayne and Reba.

I watched this movie in a theater 43 years ago and have never forgotten it. Not being a fan of romance, I went because it was written by one of my favorite science fiction and horror writers, Richard Matheson, and I was blown away by the beauty of the story. The performances by Christopher Reeves, Jane Seymour, and Christopher Plummer are superb, but it is the whole atmosphere of the film (soundtrack, cinematography, set design, direction) that makes it a masterpiece. Critics and the general public never understood it, but in the long run "Somewhere in Time" won over everything and everyone, building a well-deserved cult reputation. And as far as I know, every year that hotel holds a party during which guests and staff dress up as they did in the early 1900s to remember the days when the film was shot right there, and actors and others who attended the production are often guests of honor. So, is it better to be a blockbuster that makes billions in a single season only to be forgotten among many more of the same kind of movies, or to be a small movie that few people will see at first but that will remain forever in the memory of generations? You can guess my answer.
I normally do not watch romance movies but this came out when I was a kid and the concept of time travel fascinated me. It also blew my mind of the idea that they are forever trapped in a time loop. Now that he has gone back to the past and given her the watch, she will continue in her time until she meets him again and gives him the watch, continuing the loop. And the watch itself is a bootstrap paradox, having no beginning, never bought, never made. It only has ever existed in the loop. This movie is deep on so many levels.
I still remember when my mom explained this very aspect of the story to me when I was a young child, long before I actually watched the film. I was absolutely fascinated. My parents got my name from this movie, by the way, so I’ll always have a special place in my heart for it.

So weird that you're posting this reaction just a couple days after I was on Mackinac Island and at the Grand Hotel. It's truly like stepping back into time when you go there, no cars even allowed on the island (they made special exceptions for the filming of the modern-day scenes in this movie.) The people of the island are clearly quite proud of this movie being filmed there, and they sell movie memorabilia to this day.
I love Mackinac Island since a kid. Live in Florida now been years since there.
This movie is so hugely popular that people get together at The Grand Hotel every year, dressed for that period of time in the movie and they celebrate the film, reenacting scenes from it.
I met Jane Seymour in the Pellston airport after one of her visits to Mackinac Island. I live near here and was waiting for my husbands flight. She is so tiny, so beautiful and very nice.
I love this movie so much that even hearing the music brings tears.
The man who wrote the score had recently lost both his parents. So, not only was he a great writer, but he had the heartache in the music. It is a beautiful score.

This was one of my mom's favorite movies. For years she couldn't find it on DVD but I found one at a flea market over spring break one year in college and bought it for her. She passed a couple weeks ago and I found the DVD when cleaning out her house, I couldn't stop crying.

@@classicslover I think most people don't go because it can be really expensive. I couldn't afford the higher priced suites, but it was just me, so that was okay. Of course, some of the expense was that I purchased circa 1912 tuxedo to wear for dinner. But, all in all, it was well worth it. There are no motor vehicles allowed on Makinac. It has a real old-timey feel to it.
This makes me so happy! No one ever knows this movie and I grew up loving it so much.

The book "Bid Time Return", which this is based on, is one of my all time favorites. In the book Richard Collier has just been diagnosed with a terminal brain tumor. The symptoms go away when he's in the past, but come back when he returns -- which make his death a lot more plausible.
Also, the author, Richard Matheson, came up with this idea when he saw a photograph of the actress Maud Adams (1872-1953) and developed a serious crush on her. All the biographical info about Elise McKinna is actually from Adams' life.
I really prefer the movie over the Book. I didn't feel the romántica atmosphere of the movie in the Book, although the explanation of why she was expecting him is by far better explained in the Book.

We stayed there for our anniversary and it was amazing. We had tea and listened to a harpist, attended a poetry reading and an art exhibit, everywhere in the hotel there are little nooks and crannies of beautiful things, we dressed up for dinner which was awesome. I was so happy to see that you reviewed this movie "Somewhere In Time". I'm not the biggest fan of romantic movies but this is hands down my favorite romantic movie! What's unique and stands out about this romantic movie is the fact that it is the man's perspective of pursuing and being with the woman that he is destined by fate to be with for eternity. The time travel aspect makes it even more interesting. The movie is both beautiful and tragic. Their fate is destin to be together in a constant loop of time over and over and over again for eternity. The soundtrack of the movie is beautiful. Christopher Reeves stated the reason he did this movie is because he didn't want to be stereotyped as Superman and he wanted the venture out and do some different venues pertaining to movies. Again what a wonderful choice for a movie review!

The paradox of this movie is the watch. The older Elise gives the watch to Richard, who travels back in time and he leaves the watch with her. And it repeats ... Where did the watch originally come from? And yes, the Grand Hotel is a real place. I've stayed there. It's on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Also, no motorized vehicles are allowed on the island. So the producers had to get a special permit every time Richard drives up the road to the hotel. The original story was set at the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego. However, when they tried to make the movie there, they found it impossible to avoid all of the modern development to portray the hotel in 1912. So they moved the location to the Grand Hotel, which was built in 1887 - one year before the Del.
As someone whose Love passed away almost 2 decades ago, I found the ending quite uplifting.

I understand, I lost my fiance of half a decade while I was serving in the Marines. I still keep all our things. I've tried moving on and Ive done well, I've found someone who makes me so happy which I never thought I would find again. But now I am always so terrified of losing her, now that I'm away again overseas and we have been planning to get married when I return those thoughts always come back. I don't know if these feelings will ever truly go away.
The actor who plays William is an amazing actor, the late Christopher Plummer, who has been in some amazing films, such as The Sound of Music and Knives Out.

i loved this movie when i was younger, never thought I'd see anyone react to it.
I watched this movie in the theatre when it first came out and was instantly swept in the wonder of the romance between Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeves. From a fan point of view, I fell in love with Jane Seymour after seeing that and her brief role in the original Battlestar Galactica. Stunningly beautiful, but always elegant and charming.
The concept of time travel through hypnosis wasn't a new idea at this time as it had been theorised to be possible since at least the late 1940s. The first I had heard of it was from reading several old Batman comics books from the 1950s, where Batman and Robin would occasionally have adventures in other time periods, usually leaving a good impression while inspiring others to take up the idea of altruistic fighters throughout history.
It's a shame Somewhere In Time was never a hit, but a small blessing that it's become so fondly remembered by so many. There's even a large fan group who meet in that same hotel every year to share their love for the movie.

This movie is quite underrated and most people stumble upon it by accident, or have it recommended to them by a fan.
One day, I turned to my wife and asked her, "How do you know you're not really 89 years old with dementia, thinking it's 2019 and you're in your thirties? It could really be the year 2078. I could be trying to get you to come back to the present for a moment of clarity." That messed her up for days. She and I are both authors, so we have wild imaginations.
That is really messed up.
The series Ordinary Joe also brought up the idea of the multiverse. That every possibility for your life is playing out. That can blow your mind even more, because the possibilities are endless. You could have been born 10 years earlier or later or with a different father/mother.... endless possibilites....

I was 7 years old when this came out and it has been my favorite movie since then. Little did I know that I was already a Richard Matheson fan due to the original Twilight Zones. He wrote a few of the most iconic ones like the Gremlin on the wing of the plane, the fortune telling penny machine etc etc. He also wrote "What Dreams May Come" (my 2nd fav movie and hands down my favorite book). "I am Legend" "Stir of Echoes" etc. I joined S.I.T. Club and spoke a lot with Matheson's daughter and she gave me a lot of info on her late father and how the names in his stories were his way of getting his children involved because some of the characters were her and her brother's names. Etc etc. She spoke directly with me because I did not act like the typical fan of her father. I actually respected him and his craft and read a lot of his stories/ knew his Twilight Zone history and his slew of other films. 😊 One bit of info is the price to stay in Elise's room in the Grand Hotel for one night was waaaaaaay out of my league. Spielberg's first major directing movie gig (albeit for television) was based on a Matheson story (Duel). I'm glad you liked it and this movie is finally getting the respect it deserves. For a while there you could not find this movie anywhere. A lot of people are Matheson fans they just do not know it yet. 🤣
This is such a good movie and really showed the range Reeve had as an actor. Outside of the Superman movies, this is his most memorable movie. Little known fact, Jane Seymour and Reeve really did have a brief romance during the filming of this movie and stayed lifelong friends. She even named one of her sons after Chris Reeve.
I thought this was a great blow against the "I won't be type-cast like George felt he was" films, where "civilian" Chris appears as a then-ordinary fashioned chap, and then pulls off that mask to reveal his handsome self.
Reeve was much more of a theatre actor, so even though his movie career didn't go the way people thought it would because he was so typecast as Superman, he still continued to do plays. Then of course he ended up doing much more important work later on, a truly inspiring man.
@@ollietsb1704 Reeve was really talented at playing two characters at once. Supes/Clark Kent, here playing modern and old-timey, and in Deathtrap where he's completely two-faced. Very underrated actor.
This is my most favourite romantic movie. I have not seen anything more moving emotionally in this genre. It leaves you with heartbreak, but still allows the love of two people to continue at the end.
I’ve loved this film for 40 years. I’ve been to the Grand Hotel several times, either on vacation or for conferences. Mackinac Island is a pain to get to but once you’re there it’s lovely. No motor vehicles allowed, only bicycles and horse drawn carriages. It’s a very different pace.
I agree, it's hard to get to, we had to take 3 planes, a shuttle van and ferry boat to get to the island, but it was totally worth it!

Was a rather haunting show..... I remember when I watched this when I was very young.. Really got me thinking about the nature of time and reality, and willpower.
The film is based on a novel by Richard Matheson called "Bid Time Return". It had been out of print for several years by the time the film was released. It was put back into print under the title of the movie, and given a second life. There are a few differences from the film. The past year setting is 1896, not 1912, and the hotel is the Hotel Coronado in San Diego, a real place, just like the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. This is my mother's favorite film. She made a pencil-drawing portrait of Christopher Reeve once and sent it to him. He sent it back autographed. For her birthday once, I bought my mother a first edition of the novel.
One of the very few times I've noticed an error in a movie (some TH-cam channels have dozens to intrigue you) was here. The Grand Hotel's American flags in 1912 have 50 stars. Even as a lifelong Canadian I knew that was an oversight... though I noticed it only on my 5th or 6th viewing...
Omg this movie. I watched this when I was a kid with my mom and sister. Jane Seymour is SO stunning in this. And Christopher Reece so handsome. Loved this movie. And the music. Perfect.
As a young boy in my early teens I watched this with my father on cable ('83 or '84) and it became our favorite movie. Before watching, I believed time travel was possible which made this movie so special to me. I'm not into love stories, but it made me believe anything was possible. I ended up working at the Grand Hotel for a summer and it is as beautiful as it appeared in the movie. Watching it still moves me to this day, almost 40 yrs later!
This was my wifes most favorite movie . She is in heaven now, but I would like to think the ending would be our story. Anyway another great movie that has sports and romance in it is the Natural with Robert Redford, might check that out one day, you and your sister would enjoy it Again thanks for this movie and the memories

Laura Roberts was played by one of old Hollywood’s greats, Teresa Wright. She played Lou Gehrig’s wife in “Pride of the Yankees,” was the star of Hitchcock’s “Shadow of a Doubt”, and was nominated for Oscars for her first three film roles (and won Best Supporting Actress for one of them, in “Mrs. Miniver”).
But honestly, it’s hard to take your eyes off Jane Seymour in this movie. She was beautiful enough to be a Bond Girl in “Live and Let Die” in 1973, but in this film, she’s just otherworldly.
The screenwriter (and author of the original book) Richard Matheson, was an incredibly prolific writer, especially in Hollywood. He wrote the original story for “I am Legend” and “The Incredible Shrinking Man”, “What Dreams May Come” (a Robin Williams movie that should be on your list), *16* episodes of “The Twilight Zone”… Check out his Wikipedia page, it’s the only way to get a handle on it.
Jane Seymour was delivering her lines on stage in the play to Richard Matheson, the author of the book and screenplay, while filming. He was so moved by her delivery he got up and immediately called his wife.

Instantly recognized the Grand Hotel, Mackinac Island, Michigan at 3:16. A remnant of the gilded age. In the summer of 2005, I visited the island on a vacation with the love of my life and we looked around the grounds of the hotel but couldn't afford to stay there. It was supposed to cost $1,000 a night. She said that she would return someday when she could afford to book a reservation. I wonder if she ever did.

Saw a clip on Tik tok watched the full movie today on prime video and was fully broken at the end. I’ve said it before about Christopher reeve and I won’t stop saying it…he was pure brilliance in acting.

Like you, I watch many other reaction channels and have been waiting for them to watch this. I’ve recommended it to all of them at least once. It’s frustrating how they all just watch the same movies as every other reaction channel!
How could I have missed this for a whole year??? This is one of my all-time favorite movies, one of the most romantic movies EVER. I also love how it so brilliantly asks the question "is it better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?" It doesn't answer it for you, but it asks. I'm writing this at the beginning of your reaction, so I may edit afterward. But I hope you like it. I've LOVED it for over 40 years. One day I WILL make it to Mackinac Island. Yes, the hotel is real, the "is it you" tree is real. There is actually a fan club for this movie, called INSITE (international Network of Somewhere in Time Enthusiasts) and they have a convention there every October. Jane Seymour has shown up a few times, too.

I first saw the film late at night on The Movie Channel, probably 1982 or something. Even as an elementary school student I understood the time travel thing and the tragedy and it blew my little mind.
Same here! The “penny” scene in particular. I was somewhere around 8 years old I think. I was just asking my mom this week if she remembered this movie not even knowing Cassie was going to react to it.
I really loved this movie, and became obsessed with the music. I never was much into buying records (still talking vinyl, LP's and singles) but this was an exception. I didn't buy the soundtrack but went straight for the original Rachmaninoff composition 'Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini'. It is fabulous music

I am a big fan of the novelist-screenwriter of this film. Richard Matheson had quite a resume:
- 'Somewhere in Time' ('Bid Time Return' as a novel)
- 'I Am Legend', which has been filmed 3 times...'The Last Man On Earth' with Vincent Price, 'The Omega Man' with Charleton Heston, and 'I Am Legend' with Will Smith
- 'The Incredible Shrinking Man'
- 'Duel', which was the basis for Steven Spielberg's first film for TV
- 'What Dreams May Come' which starred Chris Reeve's BFF Robin Williams
- The Original Series 'Star Trek' episode "The Enemy Within"
- 16 episodes of 'The Twilight Zone' (1959-64), one of which "Steel" was based on a story that became the film 'Real Steel' with Hugh Jackman.
This is just the tip of the iceberg of his output as a writer of novels, short stories, and screenplays.
There are a few differences from the novel: 1) Richard was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which makes his eventual death a little more plausible. However, not as romantic. It also makes the time travel aspect seem less real and more hallucinogenic. 2)Elise doesn't witness Richard getting thrown back to his own time, she is asleep when it happens. 3) The timeline is altered as the book takes place in 1971 and 1896. 3) The pocket watch is not in the story at all. 4) The setting is the Hotel del Coronado in California, not The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. 5) Richard's coming was foretold to Elise by two psychics, not by Robinson.
In a tangent to all things 'Superman'...Director Jeannot Szwarc would direct 'Supergirl' in 1984 for the Salkinds, who produced the Reeve 'Superman' films. He would also later direct fourteen episodes of the CW series 'Smallville', about the young Clark Kent before he becomes Superman, doing a few episodes per season from season 3 through to season 10.
Jane Seymour has been in the press recently as she was close friends with the late Olivia Newton-John recalling her memories of their friendship since the 1970s. She still looks amazing. Some of my favorite roles of hers were as Solitaire in the Bond film 'Live And Let Die' with Roger Moore as 007, Marguerite St. Just in a TV production of 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' in the 80s (which she appeared in with her castmate from the Broadway play 'Amadeus'...Ian McKellen), Natalie Jastrow-Henry in the mini-series 'Herman Wouk's War and Remembrance' taking over the role played by Ali McGraw in 'The Winds of War'. and as Serina in the original mini-series and first episodes of 'Battlestar Galactica' in 1978.

I was fortunate enough to be on Mackinac when this was being filmed (I was 12!). I saw the dramatic scene where Jane Seymour screams "Richard!!!" and bolts up the grand stairway to him. Unforgettable.
Bit of trivia: the man that comments "Astonishing!" (as Richard leaves the bathroom after shaving) is Richard Matheson, the author of the novel & the screenplay.
Food for thought: Richard gets the gold watch from the elder Elise. He takes it back in time, where it is left in her possession. Thus, she can give it back to him in 1972. Where he will take it back to the past and leave it with her. So she can return it to him in 1972. Ad infinitum. Where in hell did this watch originally come from?!?!
Seymour revealed she and Reeve actually were "madly in love" during the filming of this movie, and single, and all of that was in their performances throughout most of the film. But towards the end of filming, he found out his ex-gf at the time, Gae Exton, was pregnant, and that this was why they didn't end up forming a relationship. And he got the call right before the day they needed to film both that love scene and those moments they seemed happy before Richard gets pulled back to the future. Seymour said she was struggling and telling herself not to cry at times since it would've ruined the performance.
(Why was the pregnancy a problem? Well, it was 1980 and still a much more conservative time (relatively speaking) than society has since grown and we've grown accustomed to.) Reeve ultimately publicly remained or reconnected with Exton, and stayed together for another 7 years before an amicable separation. But Seymour spoke highly of Reeve and they reconnected as friends after the accident that left him paralyzed. She named one of her sons after him.
I just learned about this about a month ago and found it to be so sad. Their chemistry was amazing, and Christopher said that Jane was his favorite leading lady. I was confused about that considering how often he worked with Margot Kidder while working with Jane on only one film but now it's understandable. It's such a shame that they didn't get a chance at happiness but it's wonderful that they remained close until his death.

Both movies are dear to me, but Time After Time had a bit more of an adventure/danger aspect to it.

As a man, this is my favorite romance movie of all time.
It's Mackinaw island in Michigan where the upper and lower Peninsulas meet. The Grand hotel is about 140 years old, and no cars are allowed on the Island. Everyone travels on foot, bicycle, or horsedrawn carriages. It also has a British fort from the 1800's located at the highest point on the island. Lots of tourists from Michigan and quite a few from Chicago vacation there every summer. It's a wonderful place to visit. Jane Seymore has been back many times to commemorate the making of the movie.
They secretly had a fling After his accident she came to visit him. . She had ramps put in every part of her house so he could have access to the whole house and the lake.They were best friends til his passing!

Catching up on some of your videos and was curious to see your reaction to this one. I can remember first seeing this is in 1983 on TV. I was twelve years old and I can remember it left me feeling so emotional because when he finds that coin in his pocket and he yanked back of all of a sudden. It was probably the first time a movie brought me to tears. This is possibly one of favourite time travel films.
I remember being so mad by that ending. And yet I loved the movie so much and the actors and the love story I couldn't stay mad. Great love stories usually involve heartbreaks and this was sort of like this.

This is one of my father's favorites and one that I tremendously enjoy too. It's relatively simple but it's an incredible beautiful film, with a great performance by Reeve and an outstanding score by John Barry. It makes me really glad that you discovered and enjoyed this one, it's an underrated gem of the 80's.
This was also my dad's favorite film. In the first half of the 80s, pay television began in Québec, Canada. For a monthly fee, you could watch a dozen new movies in rotation, mixed with older ones. If you were interested in a movie, you could watch it two or three times a day. The videocassette (VHS or BETAmax) was not necessarily in all the houses. It was a revolution! ''Somewhere In Time'' was one of the films that marked this period, for me. Mainly because my father couldn't resist watching it whenever he could. And he was not the type to watch the same movie several times. I dare to believe that many people will have a similar story with this gem of a film.

Regarding those who recommend watching "Time After Time," I agree! What they are not telling you, though, is it is a VERY different movie than this one. "Somewhere in Time" is a romance movie through-and-through. The movie "Time After Time" is NOT a romance movie. Of course there is romance in it, and an important theme is " "what I'd do for love."But you also should be aware that there's plenty of very frightening moments, bloody murders, and so on. It's much more of a crime thriller than a romance. Another common theme, of course, is time travel, but this time the past comes to the future. All that said, it IS an excellent movie and I highly recommend it. Just don't go into it expecting the same romantic results as found in "Somewhere in Time."

The only thing "Somewhere in Time" has in common with "Time after time" is that both movies involve time travel. 2 people do become romantically involved in "Time after time" but that is true of most thrillers. Which is what "Time after time is (it's a science fiction-crime thriller).
Having said that "Time after time"
is a very good movie that Cassie would probably like. In fact, imo, "Time after time" is a better movie than "Somewhere in time."
I was already a fan of both Chris and Jane when I first saw this movie. The year was 1981 somewhere in the Atlantic underwater in a US submarine. We watched it from a reel to reel projector. I've been a fan of the movie ever since.

I had to watch this video to see your reaction and sure enough it was just how I reacted, it literally felt like I had my heart ripped out of my chest. I got so involved in the story that when it happened I thought that it actually happened to me. This movie absolutely will change your life and how you view love and romance.

Hotel location is the Grand hotel on Mackinac island in Michigan. They have a Somewhere in Time weekend where you can dress up, meet people from the movie(Jane Seymour even shows up sometimes), and watch the movie in the hotel.

A little tid bit, Jane Seymour did admit that when she and Christopher Reeve made this film, they were REALLY into each other and I think that is why the romantic scenes were so beautifully convincing, because there was TRUTH behind their performances together! I absolutely LOVED it!! TRULY MAGICAL! But, I also would rather have had them live out their lives together.
Also, they have a yearly Somewhere in Time weekend there at the Grand Hotel on Mackinack Island and Jane Seymour gets dressed up as Elise MacKenna for the occasion still, and she is STILL beautiful!!

Another time travel movie you might find right up your alley 1979's "Time After Time"! It's a romance , murder mystery thriller and it also has great music like "Somewhere in Time" had.
One of a handful of Movies that has always had a VERY special place in my Heart! I became obsessed with perfecting my skills at Painting Portraits after this film and this Classical Piece of Music (by Rachmaninov) remains my absolute favorite to this day.
Another excellent Christopher Reeve movie is called DeathTrap. Michael Cain is in it too. A great movie with a great twist at the end.

"Deathtrap" was really a maze of a movie, and it worked beautifully. Actually, in 1972, Michael Caine had co-starred with Laurence Olivier in a movie with a very similar plot. Ten years later, "Deathtrap" came along, with Caine playing the Olivier older-man part, and Christopher Reeve the younger. In my opinion, the movies were equally wonderful, like something from Hitchcock.
