It is amazing how some movies can find their way into your life like this one for me. A long time childhood friend who I grew up with watching martial arts films and Stallone and Schwarzenegger and other action films of the 80's who I thought was never into these type of films gave me a copy and said that he "liked" it, by that I knew he actually meant he "loved" it. I shrugged off the idea of watching this love story for a while. But sure enough when I saw it it has stuck with me ever since and I too love it. I hate to admit it, but it softens me up with old childhood notions of love that I rarely feel anymore as an adult. I owe my friend for introducing me to this great film. And wonderful music. Glad to see that other men have a similar feeling towards this film. Thanks for sharing and being honest to your reaction on this Oliver. Cheers on your review.
Theres a stigma about guys liking that much a love story. It is taken as a sign they are into boys. Witch is actually not far from reality but what's wrong with that? Nothing. But the stigma comes from that fear I guess. Is understandable, possible yet not a rule.
I am so glad to have come across this comment sir. I will share with you a bit of my story. I grew up watching this movie over and over and I do believe that I have experienced more in life because of it. I grew up too compete in strong man competition's, I fought in MMA matches and competed professionally in Jiu Jitsu competition eventually winning a bronze medal at the world championship tournament. That being said I recently showed somewhere in time to my lovely wife and I took out the equivalent of an entire box of tissues. What I meant when I said I have experienced more because of it is that it touched my heart, mind and imagination in such a deep way that I know it expanded my heart to see more. God bless you sir.

I think it’s the most “believable” film about time travel. No time machine hocus pocus, just self hypnosis. In a way, it sounds a bit far fetched but it’s totally believable.
Extremely emotional film for me and to add Reeves passing the way he did followed by his devoted wife not long after who stuck with him till the end. So heart breaking.........
This Film absolutely kills me. I couldn't even get through your retrospective on it without sobbing my heart out. Christopher Reeve is just so devastatingly handsome. He has a way of both being the most magnificent and mature Man in the room, while simultaneously being the most Childlike and innocent, too. He had such incredible depth and vibrant warmth in those gentle steely Blue eyes of His, such dazzling charm. Such captivating screen presence. You believed in His love for His exquisite 'Elise McKenna' so acutely. And exquisite She is. Jayne Seymour was more than just a visual beauty, it radiated out of Her like the Sun. The two of them together sharing that indoor picnic was a vision of Heaven on Earth. And I'm off again.... 😢😢😢💔
Somewhere in Time is my very favourite movie and every time I watch it I can’t stop crying. The acting is superb and the music is unbelievable and breaks my heart. Jane Seymour has never looked so beautiful. Watching Christopher Reeve always is a joy but also saddens me for him to come to such a tragic end.
when i saw this movie for the first time of roadshow there were only two audiences including me at that time in japan(im a japanese).i think there are doramas for beautiul actors and atresses. i hate resent poritical correctness ugly casting. love stories must be didcated for beautifull actors.
In reading all these posts, I'm glad I'm not the only one still in touch with actual feelings. I just stumbled on this and a planeload of feelings just washed over me. It made me feel like I was the one who went back in time to 1980, when this movie first came out. The feelings are the same now as they were when my reflection showed significantly fewer wrinkles.
My dear friend Sandra took me to see this at the $1 movie theaters back in 1981. She and I adored this movie, she passed away at an early age due to cancer. I am forever grateful for thise memories.
I watched this 29 times. This movie is something I would have written and I know how he feels. If we could go back in time. The way it was. Great review Oliver.
I watched it just as many times, maybe more. First when it came on HBO in early 80's. Later I bought the video tape. I recommended this movie to friends and they loved it too. It is a classic!
There is something magical about this movie, it is not just another soppy, romantic film. The mystical theme is a powerful one and its stars Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour breathe life into it with utterly convincing performances. I feel Christopher Reeve's subsequent tragedy brings added poignancy to the movie. Fascinating review which I thoroughly enjoyed, makes me want to watch the movie again! Many thanks.
Sure I've commented on this before Absolutely beautiful. Story line is quality acting brilliant and so believable. Music superb. I I absolutely love it.
This film moved and devastated me at the same time. The richness of the story, the realism of the characters and the agelessness of the characters' struggle to fulfill their longing to be together and the music being as present as a character in it's own right has elevated this film from being a "corny love story" into something more - a truly great film.
That’s a great insight into the part the music played in this film. It’s as a character, excellent thought, the film would certainly be different without it. I think Barry losing his parents not long before he put this score together added the emotions to it... thank You for sharing !! 🙏🏻❤️
My favorite love story. Everything came together in this film -- story, actors, music. I hadn't seen it in years, but the music has always stuck with me and I'd find myself humming it once in a while. Came up recently and got me into the mood to watch it again. A timeless classic that touches the soul.
I feel the exact same way--esp when I imagine that ending is how utterly catatonic w/grief i'll be when my parents must leave me...but I cry happy tears when I hope & fantasize that we'll meet again & be together 1 day in heaven-- Wherever & whatever heaven might be. I really really hope my dream of this kind of heaven turns out to be true.
I do too. The music is perfect. Jane Seymour is beautiful ! Jane Seymour and Christopher Reeve are absolute legends in this movie and I can relate to the things they both went through together.

This was one of my wife's favorite films. I lost her ten years ago and I have never been able to watch it again. Just hearing Barry's timeless music breaks my heart all over again.
Many people say this is nothing but a sappy romantic movie. But there is a lot of humor in the movie too. Beautifully photographed, the Grand Hotel area at Mackinaw Island is just gorgeous.
Thank you Oliver. Watched this for the first time today and absolutely loved it. Reminds me of the feeling you get waking up after dreaming of someone you've lost (in love or in life) and realising that they are really gone. The score is simply immense. I'm away to cry some more...
The most moving and beautiful movie I ever saw!! I saw it when it first came to theaters and sat there, along with most everyone else, crying like a baby. LOVE this movie!!! Could watch it again and again, but would spend a fortune on tissue.
My favorite scenes: When Richard discovers his name in the old hotel registry (always gives me chills). When Elise is being photographed and smiles at Richard lovingly (suddenly the inexplicable power of that old portrait over Richard makes sense). And my favorite, the scene during the play performance when Elise changes the dialogue and declares her love for Richard. Magnificent film! Love it forever.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Watched it as a kid and never forgot it or the ending. Chris performance was wonderful and he was my first celebrity crush. The music is haunting and beautiful. Fantastic movie.
Oliver, this film affects me exactly the way you described. It was one of my wife's favorite films. I lost her seven years ago this month and I have never been able to watch it again or hear the score without my heart breaking.
Oh my - I'm so sorry for your loss. I can imagine this movie would be very emotive for you. Grief is the price we pay for love. You will carry your wife with you in your heart always. God bless. X
Somewhere In Time is my all time favorite Romance film --I never knew about this until it was recommended by a clerk at a Video Store in the early 1980's --I sat through it , cried , wept and became "hooked" , I've owned 3 VHS versions , wore them out , had the score on cassette and now DVD & CD --It's a wonderful enlightening and very romantic
I had the same reaction the first time I watched it. Cried, not knowing exactly why, but knowing in my heart that we all would like to go back in time to meet someone we've fallen in love with. He got to do it, all be it, for just a short time, but that time is worth everything. He died because he couldn't live without her. And we find that very sad!
Impressive ! It's nice to enjoy something so much. Physical media is awesome. I bought a sealed vhs copy on eBay and opened it and watched it tonight for the first time. Awe inspiring film.
I decided to watch this film after your retrospective Oliver. Well done and thank you. Somewhere in Time has now become one of my favourite films and favourite movie soundtracks.
I can not listen to this Music or watch the Movie without tears streaming down my Face................................There has been much Music that has engulfed our heart but very little that goes much deeper to Touch The Soul.................Sometimes there is a "deep love" that you have had for someone that gets "lost in time"........"Come Back To Me In Another Life"................Bob
+Bob Fox I held back tears until the scene at 7:50 - the longing to be close to the love of his life...ugh. Blessed be the soul of John Barry for this gorgeous, heart-wrenching score.
+Bob Fox God.. I feel the same way. I remeber watching this film when it first came out. Time has passed so quickly and I can relate even more to the movie now. One of my all time favorites.. if not the number one favorite.
Too true Bob! I am very happily married, but there is someone who I met some time ago whom I think about a lot, but, would never approach or indeed intrude on her life. I did say to her though, "If I were single, in another life, I would not have hesitated in asking for her hand in marriage". She was flattered...... I left it at that. That was over a year ago...She is still single.
This movie is my favourite due to it's "I wonder" flavour to it. So sad that Christopher Reeve never got to continue his career. Whenever I feel a bit down, I play the theme to this movie.
Despite the level of corn and cheese, this has always been one of my personal favorite films. The very idea of the plot is intriguing, and with the strong acting and phenomenal score, it's just an incredibly underrated film.
I was born and raised across the lake from mackinac Island and was there watching them film this movie, and met jane and chris during a break in filming, such warm and friendly people.i cannot watch the movie or listen to the soundtrack without crying, and I'm not ashamed to admit it
The film was given a Blu-Ray release last year in the U.S. I've never seen the film, but your retrospective just soaks in the beauty and elegance this film likely has. I will always hold Chris Reeve in the highest regard, and I don't think he ever truly got the recognition for his acting talents that he should have.
Probably. But if he had done a bit more of mainstream movies eventually he would get it. He wasnt into it but the path to more recognition in this business IS balancing mainstream with something that may or not atract many viewers. Look at tom hanks: stuck in comedy in the early ages. Was able to make the transaction because he stuck long enough. Also matthew macconaughey. He was an action romantic good looking sexy muscled blond actor who latter morph into other characters. Had he left what he was most cast for in the early years and probably he wouldn't gone so far. But the industry works differently with men. Woman are not so lucky. We're is Meg Ryan today? All it took was rummours of her infidelity to be cast away. Men can be unfaithful, criminals, rapists even paedophiles (unfortunately). It has been so in Hollywood sense or even before Marilyn Monroe (got there trough the sofa and was reaching 30 trying desperately to be cast in something else than the dumb blound) and Errol Flynn (google this one specially his activities in his house).
Thank you very much for your extensive and well documented review. I watched this movie when I was very young in my native Mexico. At that time I know little of Christopher Reeves or Jane Seymour (although I remember falling in love with her incredible beauty en elegance). As far as the music, this is a there than touches every fiber of the heart to the point of tears. Now I understand why there is a sense of pain behind it. Thank you again!
Best movie ever! I get goosebumps every time I see it or even a clip from it. I ponder the question; who saw who 1st? When she approached him, she already knew him, but he didn't' know her. He only pursued her after that 1st meeting. It's a love story with unanswered questions.
One of those rare films which gets better and better with age and repeat viewings, I’m glad it’s brought together so many people from all walks of life. The music is timeless, haunting, beautiful, soothing and heart-breaking. The performances from Christopher and Jane are open and inviting, with no hint of sarcasm, wall-breaking jokes, knowing nods and winks, it’s just pure art and escapism.
unfortunetely we live in a time where a man must emphatically state he is NOT homosexual before he proceeds to pay another man a compliiment on his looks - sad but the reality. i too as a hetro man have no problem saying the Chris was like a demi-god in the looks department bit facial features and physique - superman both on and off camera! this filme was a masterpiece of both cinematograhpy and soundtrack not to mention screenplay and acting by chris and Jane. its a JEWEL in my collection and i take every oportunity to spread it by word of mouth that i can! a unique and beautiful film
According to one of his interviews, he preferred to act in romantic films like this as compared to the heroic superherp types. God bless the man anc his soul RIP ❤
Oliver, I felt exactly what you felt, I first saw the movie during the summer of my freshman year in college. Man o man, I don't know what about this film connects so much with me. From the music, to acting, to Collier and McKenna's youth and beauty, I was invested. I still am. There is no film like it, and I don't think there ever will. Great video man. Thank you!
I was one of the few people who saw it in the theater during its original release. My parents and I were captivated by the ads for it so we went to see it. We love period pieces like Gone With the Wind etc. We totally fell in love with it. Since then it’s always held a special place in my heart.
I watched this when I was only about 10. My Dad told me Chris Reeves was in it so of course being obsessed with Superman, I had to watch it. I had no interest in girls at the time whatsoever but boy did it make my heart ache with pain and sadness. The music is just amazing and extremely emotionally powerful. Jane Seymour had to be the most beautiful woman on earth back then. She also appeared briefly in the Battlestar Galactica TV series as Serena who married Apollo. As a kid, my heart was crushed yet again when she was killed in the first part of the TV series leaving her son Boxy and Apollo. If I could ever rewrite the parameters of my world, Elise Mckenna would be my bride for life and I'd be everything she would want from a Richard Collier.
if you dont like this movie, then you dont have a hurt... Its a masterpiece. I saw it almost 30 years before as a child and it stucked in my mind. I just saw it again today, and i loved it more. Christofer here does un amazing acting as all of the rest. I also love him us Superman so... your not the only one. Great review, thanks. Love from Greece
0:41 - 'Groundhog Day' (another 'time travel' movie) contains an easter egg associated with 'Somewhere in Time'. Bill Murray's character takes up piano lessons during his 'time looping' experience and in a later scene we hear both jazzy and classical renditions of the theme to 'Somewhere in Time'.
Groundhog Day also has another easter egg: The song "It's Almost like Being in Love" over the end credits, which comes from another classic time-travel romance, "Brigadoon".
Thank you I saw this in HK, in 1982 I went to see it because of Jane Seymour and Chris Reeve. As a result I was caught unprepared and didn't have any hankies or tissues with me... Ah love gained and lost...
flungingpictures yeah but did he really go back in time or was he possibly imagining it? In back ti the future, for instance, there’s no ambiguity. We know it did happen in that movie. I didn’t see this movie so I’m not sure. I don’t really understand. I especially don’t understand time travel. Very confusing.
After hearing your review I felt the same after I watched it. Stuck in my mind for a long time. When my wife and I got married we had the theme played in the Church, as we both have this movie as a joint fave.
I just rewatched it, cried my eyes out again. I didn't have a lost love or dead beloved at time I watched it first time, or during earlier rewatchs, yet was always deeply impacted. Later years I had a similar experience with Richard's (not the time travel part of course, I wish I had) and yes, it means even more.
This beautiful film reflects what happens when the mix is perfect. Casting, location, camera work, music and the haunting storyline - it will certainly live on and capture the hearts and minds of many generations to come. The original novel Bid Time Return I highly recommend. This original story is deeper and darker than the film and well worth a read. It is not only a story of love and time travel but of deceit and betrayal as Richard Collier never reveals who he exactly is and Robinson the manager is actually the one trying to protect Elise even though he’s not sure exactly what exact threat RC poses but it will change the rest of her life forever.
Just looking looking at all the scenes makes me feel a love I never had, that's how powerful this film is, not to mention, I never saw the movie. This is pure absent love that is not portrayed as we have truly lost this art of human kindness. RIP
This is one of the most beautifully haunting movies. The yearning for the past is one of the strongest feelings.

The best
They actually were in love in real life at the time and had a relationship which Jane has spoken about.
Beautifully put!
I unashamedly, apologetically adore this film. And it destroys me every single time I watch it. Just beautiful.
I feel the same way. I watch it maybe every 2 years and love it again.
Same. I cry like a baby 😅
I fell instantly in love with this film when I saw it in a theatre in 1980. I still love it to this day. It just grabs my heart.
Somewhere in time
Sure I've commented on this before
Absolutely beautiful. Story line is quality acting brilliant and so believable. Music superb. I I absolutely love it.
My favorite movie and my favorite song.
Its a tear jerker of a movie especially with the music laid over it.
I totally love this film, it's wonderful, but I don't watch it frequently.
I always end up crying a river.
@@angel4animals956 --- It's true and that's why the movie's so powerful for those who have the heart to understand.

I saw this movie when it was in theaters 1980 , I remember telling a friend the next day it was amazing , I bought the soundtrack album my wife and I listened everyday after work .
You two would be a real witness; was it really as unpopular as the narrative claimed?
just listening to the soundtrack always made me teary eyed.. I love the movie so much.
I was one of the few people, I guess, who saw it in the movie theater during its original run. The critics were so hard on it that I felt for years that I was alone in loving this film. Later I was thrilled to find out that there was an organization of "Somewhere in Time Enthusiasts." I still don't personally know anyone else who knows and loves this movie but it's so good to see comments from folks everywhere who feel as I do about it. And that music! It absolutely melts me to mush every time hear it.
I’ve introduced so many people to this film. It’s the most complete beautiful film ever made
@@amandajames5068 Yes. So sad that virtually every critic trashed it. Kept a lot of people from seeing it who otherwise would have loved it.
@@gdouglas999 I remember clearly it being featured on film night. Can’t recall if it was Barry Norman or Clive James but you’re right, the didn’t give it good reviews but I was captivated from the clips. Everything about it got me from the very start
Christophe Reeve has to have been the most stunning man EVER! He and Ms. Seymour make a beautiful romantic pair!
And the music? I never heard a more beautiful score! Thank you Mr Harper
There’s a reason he’s Superman
Who wouldn't fall in love with Jane Semour, she is one of the most beautiful women to ever appear on screen.
So true, she was great in this film as well as Live and Let Die as Solitaire!
Yep.
Her, Jacqueline Smith, and Linda Carter. The brunette trifecta
@@smdmorga2 je la trouve très belle
Her smile is heartbreaking. I'm a straight woman but I can see why men would howl for her 😂❤
This movie still makes me cry. A 46 yr old guy... I've been in love with Jane Seymour ever since. They really did a beautiful job making this film and soundtrack. the portrait scene....ugh her expression gives me butterflies. My buddies at that time were exchanging info on who's our dream girl. When I said Jane Seymour they were like who?! why?! lol I told them to watch the movie so they'd understand. But of course they're to manly for chick flicks. She's still gorgeous.
Hate to say it but it brings tears to my eyes my wife so loved the music and movie Rest in peace Diana.

This was one of my wife's favorite films. I lost her ten years ago and I have never been able to watch it again. Just hearing Barry's timeless music breaks my heart all over again.
Somewhere in Time is a beautiful movie that always gets an emotional reaction from me. I think it's fantastic!
The soundtrack to this movie is exquisitely beautiful. Thanks to this I know the circumstances surrounding John Barry, the writing of this music.
Classic film, cracking score, cried my eyes out when i first watched it... great retrospective.
God bless. X
I am so very sorry about your losing your loving wife. How wonderful your love had to be, and how Blessed she was to have you....and you..her!

I agree!
My mum always cries when she watches this movie, even listening to the soundtrack she sheds tears. She watches it again recently, same thing.
Loved the movie then, love it now and the music is fantastic. Thank you for posting this.
Wanda Snow No problem Wanda!. Glad you enjoyed it.
I've never seen it. I would like to.
I decided to watch this film after your retrospective Oliver. Well done and thank you. Somewhere in Time has now become one of my favourite films and favourite movie soundtracks.
yay!
Im so in love with this movie
Without doubt one of the saddest ever endings to a film - gut wrenching but so watchable
i have this kind of love but i cant have him the pain is unbearable
Too true Bob! I am very happily married, but there is someone who I met some time ago whom I think about a lot, but, would never approach or indeed intrude on her life. I did say to her though, "If I were single, in another life, I would not have hesitated in asking for her hand in marriage". She was flattered...... I left it at that. That was over a year ago...She is still single.
This is the best romantic movie, and my favorite movie of all time!!!!
I of course like Back To The Future but I love Somewhere In Time better
Thanks
Mine too! I need to get to buy it!
Yes, you can buy it on Amazon or eBay!
you should also see The Lake House (2006)
It really affected me deeply too, you were spot on when you said it's a movie for those who have suffered a painful breakup or separation.
This movie is my favourite due to it's "I wonder" flavour to it. So sad that Christopher Reeve never got to continue his career. Whenever I feel a bit down, I play the theme to this movie.
Watching this in 2019.. it still makes me cry..
Well done man. This movie struck me hard as a child, and still never fail to cry upon viewings (though rare) Thanks :)
The definitive romance film. Still one of my all-time personal favorites. Thanks for a "TIMELESS" review.

I'm trying to watch back the film. I just love the theme! The sound track is moving and Rachmaninov is also one of my favorite composers. Thank you.
If SIT doesn't hit the spot for you, then it was never meant to. For some of us it's an aching heart.
Glad you mentioned Remains of the Day…Reeve was excellent in that, another perfect illustration of how versatile he was as an actor.
I have loved this film since I was 12 and I love the music so much my fav music in the whole world
Hello there,
How are you doing ?
Despite the level of corn and cheese, this has always been one of my personal favorite films. The very idea of the plot is intriguing, and with the strong acting and phenomenal score, it's just an incredibly underrated film.
Yes, it is a timeless classic and one which everyone should watch. My most favorite movie.
I love this movie! Great music, too!

I love listening to John Barry talk about music.
John Barry music
So do I, he is part of the reason why I own so many film scores on CD. I particularly enjoy his many scores for the James Bond series.
i'm not gay...but Chris Reeve was a beautiful man, both inside and out. He really was Superman.
Indigo Sunset broke my heart when he broke back, he was my super man when child
+KariahLuke MacChan It was devastating. I hated seeing him in that condition.
unfortunetely we live in a time where a man must emphatically state he is NOT homosexual before he proceeds to pay another man a compliiment on his looks - sad but the reality. i too as a hetro man have no problem saying the Chris was like a demi-god in the looks department bit facial features and physique - superman both on and off camera! this filme was a masterpiece of both cinematograhpy and soundtrack not to mention screenplay and acting by chris and Jane. its a JEWEL in my collection and i take every oportunity to spread it by word of mouth that i can! a unique and beautiful film
@Joseph Miller -- THIS.
Thank you!
I love this video so much. It really shows the details of what to expect in this beautiful film. Thanks for posting!
The most beautiful soundtrack I've ever heard
Great review of a phenomenal movie....I was a mess too...the music does it every time
When I actually realized that this film plays into a paradox, this film is such a classic, probably my favorite romance film.
I think the music added to the romantic feel of this great movie. . .the music melts my heart!
I was one of the few people who saw it in the theater during its original release. My parents and I were captivated by the ads for it so we went to see it. We love period pieces like Gone With the Wind etc. We totally fell in love with it. Since then it’s always held a special place in my heart.
I am visiting that island in a couple of days and I cant wait to see all the inspirations! thank you
The soundtrack is 50% of this movie
And that's makes it 100% AWESOME
And Richard Chamberlain is the other half.
You are lying on your bed in the Grand Hotel and it is 6:00 p.m. in the evening of June 27, 1912
if you dont like this movie, then you dont have a hurt...
@@peteg475 Well spotted. 👍

Saw it at the release day, for I loved Superman with Christopher...he is now Gone, but he will always be remembered with this great score!!!
Thank you
I saw this in HK, in 1982
I went to see it because of Jane Seymour and Chris Reeve.
This is my ALL time favorite. I love the music so beautiful. Such a wonderful love story.
Wonderful film. Amazing. Touched me at 11 years of age and never let go.
Not a fan of "love movies" at all but I must admit this is a great movie by far.
After hearing your review I felt the same after I watched it. Stuck in my mind for a long time. When my wife and I got married we had the theme played in the Church, as we both have this movie as a joint fave.
that movie was so effin' sad.... get teary eyed just watching this review and hearing the theme music
Somewhere in Time played in Hong Kong for eighteen months, and broke the record then.I wonder why it failed in US.
No publicity.
I can't watch this without crying my eyes out .... ♥♥♥
Hello there,
How are you doing ?
wonderful love story, never forget it when I first watched it more then twenty years ago...
thanks for reminding me of that epic soundtrack. a masterpiece. love your reviews
No, I'm not crying...something in my eye. Honestly.
Excellent review. 3 generations in my family who admire this film. Much appreciated!
Best movie of all time.
Agree xo!
I tend to agree!
Just looking looking at all the scenes makes me feel a love I never had, that's how powerful this film is, not to mention, I never saw the movie. This is pure absent love that is not portrayed as we have truly lost this art of human kindness. RIP
