This cannot be stressed enough. Expensive gear does not make someone a better musician. It can certainly be inspiring, but if you don’t know what you’re doing you won’t know what you’re doing.
You start on crap, cheap instruments so your hands and mind can build up to the real stuff when you save for it.

Actually originally this use to cost $899 and then prices keep going up for it! At one point during that brif time Teenage Engineering stopped selling them and people though it was gone for good people on ebay were trying to resell them for like $6,000 from a old article I read. and prices keep changing but now it's $1299 dang stupid inflation!

It wasn’t inflation as much as the “screen shortage” teenage engineering had an issue with. They couldn’t (or, depending on who you ask, acted like they couldn’t for false scarcity) which shot up the price.
It's a ripoff piece of overpriced tat.

I mean it's exactly the piece of gear you want if you want to sit in a diner or on the train or at the bus stop and make beats. I would love to have something tiny like this to throw in my backpack. Afaik the only thing besides this that can do this is a $1500 laptop and a midi controller, which is going to be both more expensive and bulkier. So do I with it was half the price? Yeah, or even less would be nice. Do I understand why people pay $1200 for it? Yeah, absolutely

Really that overpriced? It's a decently built hardware with really neat software. AFAIR audio software IS expensive, as most "creative pro" software. A package like that for like $1400 is a pretty regular price. Of course you can do almost everything that device can do with a PC or MAC and some FREE software, but not nearly as convenient and fast. It's like with Photoshop and GIMP. You will do with GIMP almost all you can do with Photoshop, but if you're pro and you need super fast and convenient way to do your job - PS just pays off.

I simultaneously think it's overpriced and have no regrets whatsoever in buying it (and would rebuy it if I lost or broke it). There is nothing else quite like it in sound or UI and I think the uniqueness is what justifies the price really. I made an album on it in pubs and in the park. It's wildly expensive. legit i know nothing about music production, i haven't played an instrument since middle school, but the design of the OP-1, just in terms of pure aesthetics, is enough to make me want to learn how to make music just so i can get an OP-1 and do stuff with it.

I like to set the LFO to element, with G as the source (accelerometer), and just wobble/tilt the thing to kind of simulate velocity/aftertouch, and get a bit more expression that way.

First time I've come across your page. A perfect balance of information, enthusiasm and humor. Well done.
This was actually very helpful and fun to watch! I've been wanting one for a while.
For those full time musicians who do NOT have unlimited income, which means nearly all of you. Here is an alternative: the Korg Electribe2 or Sampler. $400.00 add a keyboard controller for $100 to $160 and you have a portable (battery) driven playable synth with 16 tracks, 16 effects inserts, and unlimited sound if choosing the sampler. Compose in 4 measure chunks then chain them all together for a full song.
a 100-200$ intel atom tablet with windows, your software of choice, and a small midi keyboard or a launchpad.
manquri: Yes, software always seems cheaper...but you're leaving out the cost of the computer or tablet, upgrades to hardware, software, operating systems, memory. By the time you own a software instrument 3 years it costs more than the OP-1. You're also leaving out the complexity and and the crashes. I tried creating music on a computer and found it to be impossible. I started on computers in the printing industry in 1990 using million dollar super computers, then later to MACs, PCs,.... been repairing computers for a quarter century now, I know them pretty well. I now use a stand alone hardware recorder for laying down tracks and transfer to computer to do the post tracking work. ROM chips in hardware are very dependable compared to the RAM/ROM/application/operating system of computers and tablets. I now make music effortlessly on hardware recorders, which leave my creativity wide open without the troubleshooting and mess of computers.
Wilderness Music if I'm talking about using a tablet, I'm not leaving it's cost out. There are free softwares to make music with.
If you are using the tablet exclusively as a synth, you can skip the updates and just keep a backup of the system as it was first installed, you could even use a tool that freezes that so when you reboot nothing has changed, then just save your files to a micro sd card. Even counting paying someone for the setup, it goes up to 500$ (including a decent compact midi controller)
If in 3years you need to buy 3-5 tablets (especially if using them in a static way) you probably would need to buy another op1.
You don't really need to upgrade either unless you want something more powerful, but then you're not comparing apples to apples.
Though I'll give you that software crashes are more likely with this kind of setup than with an op1.
Buying a used Novation Circuit is also a cheap option

Another Glitch - I meant for Andrew to try out.. I know it exists. They were doing it at least as far back as the 60's as detailed in the Pink Floyd book "Saucer Full of Secrets". Artists would turn on the radio and improvise with whatever came on. I also was a huge fan of Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead utilizing a radio on stage to sample sounds during their live version of "National Anthem". Yes, I think I do know it exists.

That’s literally the only big issue with it IMO. It shouldn’t have been hard for them to add that either, they should know synths basically need velocity. But I still think it’s worth it for some people, that would just push it to its highest potential

I get around the velocity sensitivity by adjusting the envelope to a very short attack, so if you hit the key really quick, it plays the sound quietly. It's not totally instant like true velocity, but if you get the envelope just right and play for a minute to get used to it, it's almost negligible 👍

In a way they priced it just right for a certain market. It's what's known as reassuringly expensive. The price itself makes it more desirable to the wealth conscious consumer. Kind of like a new Iphone.
Exactly correct, They're marketing it as a luxury good - if they sold it for $600 that aura would be gone.
I opened one up to replace a dead battery. Inside I could 100% see why this is the price it is. It's a beautifully engineered niche product with tens of thousands of design hours gone into it. If you could make this thing and sell it for $600 believe me, there would be a dozen companies in china doing it.

Personally I prefer non velocity sensitive keys as I can adjust that in my daw and I don’t have to worry about playing in the velocities that I want as I can perfect it afterwards

I'm enjoying the Korg Volcas for similar reasons, although so far none of them can do what the OP-1 does (probably the Volca Sample is the most able to do a full track) I like them anyway. I don't think the Op1 is for me, but I think its cool, great industrial design, inspirational and sounds good!

If youre new to synthesizer hardware then it can seem expensive, but being in the game for years i can tell you this actually isnt that bad. Try a Prophet 6!
Prophet 6 is full analogue with VCOs using discrete components, that stuff isn't cheap to do. This is fully digital.
And difficult to maintain.
I could conceivably make a op-1 in my spare time, yet a Prophet 6 is a completely other beast!
I've toyed around with virtual synths, and I can say that it seems expensive for what looks like an intel edison with an oled screen, 4 pots and a few buttons. That would be in the ballpark of 200 bucks, not 1000. So that means the software+Research and developpement is really expensive.
Not from synthesizers, coming from mallet percussion this thing is pretty cheap.

Very focused and to the point
honestly i think having 4 tracks to record with limiting in a good way, it requires more creativity to cram everything you want into only 4 tracks. i mean, John Frusciante was able to create the sprawling Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt with a 4 track.

I just say ROLI. Small Piano with 5 dimension of touch, add a drum/sound effect square and another item of your choice, you have a much more immersive item you can attach and play more than pure binary inputs

I used to chat with him on a chat site many yrs ago.he would have a live feed while he produce, we used private on there about music.I lerned a lot from him.I never asked for his number because I did not want be wierd.the site shut down.he seams layed back cool when I chated with him.I chated with him for few yrs.he has a lot module patching synths. He uses multiple daws.I know he uses ablation live very heavy and he dos rewire other daws into ablation live when last time I talked to him on chat.that was yrs back so I do not know what deadmouses uses know.buf I am guessing still ablation.
