Andrew, I've commented on a youtube video maybe twice, but i needed to comment on this.
I just wanted to say thank you for producing such excellent content.
You do so much work. You learn what you're talking about so you remain informative and don't bullshit the viewer.
Your quick and efficient, but still comedic.
Your editing and cinematography is always spot-on and your white-minimalist-asthetic is always pleasent.
Beyond that, you're a fantastic musician that still wants to learn and you've got a great personality.
So i just wanted to say thank you. You've entertained me, informed me, and pleased me...visually that is.

+G You don't know that. It's been out for like five minutes. just because it doesn't have that nice screen doesn't necessarily mean it takes longer to learn... also that's just not what this thing is. Music composition is highly exploratory. Despite the limitations of any instrument there are an insane number of possibilities. I still 'want' an OP-1, but the OP-Z is definitely worth what they're charging for it.

Two things to note about a display-less piece of equipment:
    Less price

For using in live performance, the OP-Z eschews the screen smartly for portability.

I think you did a great job at show casing this but I hope you do another video on it cause you missed a cpl of key elements.
Master transpose track which is probably OP-Z strongest feature and most innovative. You basically enter your sequence and the master transpose track analyses which key you’re in and then you can transpose in the fly and step sequence those transpose changes. If you set the track length to x4 or x8 and play in a transpose sequence you can create very long patterns with chord structures.
Tape track: this track buffers 10 seconds of sound and lets you remix it. It’s basically a beat repeat type of thing which you can sequence as well.
Step components: you can add step components to each step. Things like octave shift, beat repeat, elektron type of x\x trig etc.
each step can contain 5 (or was it more?) step components so each step can start to get really wild and unpredictable.
Encoder step sequencing: each encoder sequence can be sequences by just pressing a step and changing the encoder setting.
Mute groups: each pattern can contain 10 mute groups. One mute group contains mute settings for the pattern. I.e track 4 is solo in one group and in the other track 1-4 is muted. Really handy for live playing.
Midi: each track can be converted to a midi track. So you have a 16 track midi sequencer with 16 cc parameters on each track to sequence. Seriously powerful stuff.
iOS OS X app: new effects, synth engines and samples will be available for download, making it a lot more customizable.
Thanks for sharing those cool beats btw!!

Great rundown! Seems like the decided to solve what a lot of people found frustrating with the OP-1, which was that you could not have multiple tracks (or just synth + drum) sequenced - they needed to be committed to tape. And they did that by taking their PO technology and essentially "combining" multiple POs together.

You think it's complicated because you are looking through a "OP-1 lens", because you're used to the visual feedback and so on. But old synthesizers were much harder to operate and sometimes didn't have any visual feedback at all... Yet everyone loves them!

    • @kenmken
      @kenmken 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I think "too complicated" is highly based on how much practice you're willing to give it. I feel you could get really efficient and do some really cool stuff with it (especially live) if you're willing to put the time in to master it. It's just it's format isn't too familiar, so it's kind of like learning to navigate a new instrument, expect probably easier than that.
