    Cool tip for those with ableton but don't have pads. Record tapping on the table with mic. Right click, convert to midi. Turns out to be way more responsive than most pads.

    To anyone still looking for advice - go with the Arturia. The main purpose of these types of midi controllers will be the keys in >90% the situations, and you really want to have nice keys. I hurried up and went with the Launchkey mini MK3, because of the fancy utilities and many pads, and it has dog shit keys, you can't even play what you want with it. The 8 pads on the Arturia are more than enough, and the keys are the best out of all of these controllers

      Using their "MIDI CONTROL CENTER" software (available on their website) you can alter how the MK2 is set up.
      You can assign notes, midi channels and functions to the pads and keys, as well as velocity curves, etc.
      I used it to assign MMCs (Midi Machine Control ) to the pads so I can control my DAW's Transport (Record/Stop/Play/etc) as the MK2 doesn't have built-in Transport controls.

    Bought an Arturia Minilab MK II last week. Your channel is seriously reviving my curiosity and interest in the music world again. In middle school I used to play saxaphone, and actually was allowed to play first chair for the high school band (while still in middle school.) Once I hit 8th grade we were allowed to choose band, choir, or tech. I made the massive mistake of choosing tech (which I was already excelling at.) Anyway, long story short...your content, personality, and great way of describing things REALLY wants me to get back into this lost interest.
    Being 31 years old now...would your course be good for someone that has forgotten everything about music? My tinkering around with the minilab was a ton of fun, but I can see how I need to learn my DAW and actual music theory/piano. I guess TLDR, you're an inspiration.

    This is a nearly 3 year old review of these keyboards. Since then the Novation Launchkey Mini Mk3 has added pitch and modulation touchstrips, a sustain peddle connector and the knobs are taller. The black keys are also no longer a funny shape but are much nicer. Quite an improvement over mk2. I'm sure the other keyboards have all had improvements. Many people like the Novation Launchkey due to its excellent Ableton Live integration. But it does depend what you want to get out of the keyboard.

      @annnabee 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your input- do you have personal experience with the Mk3 (particularly its key feel)? The ableton integration is super appealing to me, but as a piano player I just can’t handle dodgy keys so am leaning towards the arturia for my first midi controller.

    • @homevids
      @homevids 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@annnabee The MK3 is for composition and not really for playing seriously. For that you should look for a keyboard with full-size keys. I agree that the MK3 keys are not ideal. I have big hands and playing with speed is awkward. Novation have made a compromise - keeping the KB cheap, fitting a lot of Abelton shortcuts, and making it portable. The key size and feel is one thing that has suffered as a consequence. Check out the Yamaha PSR-E373 and PSR-E473. For playing I hope to use one of those.

    For those trying to decide between Akai and Arturia...
    Arturias Minilab MK2 (Owned 1 year)
    Pros:
    *Solid build quality
    *Metal backplate
    *Superb knobs
    *Ok keys (sturdy, but takes a while to get used to)
    Cons:
    *Pitch bend/mod strips are a joke, unusable in ANY situation, there is no way you can write smooth automation with those
    *Knobs are preset only to Arturias instruments, limited with other instruments by default
    *Stiff pads (Have to hit hard to achieve higher velocities)
    Akai MPK Mini MK2 (Owned 2 years)
    Pros:
    *Keys action and velocity
    *Nice pads (Great velocity)
    *All knobs function with most intruments out of the box
    *Arp
    Cons:
    *Very toy-like feel to it
    *Flimsy keys
    *Poor build quality-one year in pitch bend/mod toggle started glitching. Two years in USB port came loose and broke IC chip that was right behind it.

    I have the Korg. Love it. And Bluetooth midi has surprisingly low latency... though, it seems to get the best results on Apple devices. I just thought I’d point out with the XY pad that when it is in Pitch/mod mode that it is ‘relative’, so you actually can’t really do the quick jumps in position you mentioned. But it does make it pretty stable for doing pitch or mod with better precision than if you hadn’t had ‘relative’.
    The Arturia is the only one that gives me gear lust. Your reaction to the quality of the keys. I have all I need right now, but finding room for improvement in quality is where I look now. The Alesis might be better suited in the higher key count department for me. 2 octaves is fun to do but it’s very agitating in even some basic scenarios.

    Is Novation launchkey mini mk3 or the akai mpk mini mk2 better - if you work with ableton live10? (why?)

    • @yungbroc
      @yungbroc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      on ableton you can assign all the knobs and pads of a midi keyboard to almost every adjustable parameter available in your project (assuming ableton recognizes them). so i think it should mainly come down to which midi keyboard has the better workflow for yourself.

    • @JESchomb
      @JESchomb 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      launchkey mini mk3 has integrated ableton functions that you would have to set up yourself on the akai mini mk2. true, both can pretty much do the same thing if you really want them to, but the big benefit to the lk mk3 is that you don't have to spend the time assigning everything when you get it. you can just plug it in and have the full support. it also allows you to have complete control over session view in ableton. you don't have to have your hands on your laptop at all and can create an entire song in a matter of minutes using only the launchkey mini because of this. also important for you to know that Andrew didn't review the mk3 in this video, he was reviewing an older model and the mk3 has a ton of great improvements. Launchkey Mini mk3 is 100% better for ableton live 10, but both are good mini keyboards that are pretty similar.
      I'd suggest looking up some videos of people using both and see which you think you'd like more.

Not only did they add pitch and mod functions, but there is a super nice arp mode as well as easily accessible mute and solo functions and the knobs can be used to adjust volume, panning, and sends. @@annnabee I’d like to preface this reply by saying that I am not a piano player so my reference points are mostly based off of what I have heard and the few pianos and midi controllers I’ve had the chance to use first hand, but I am like 80% sure if you are wanting higher quality keys Arturia would be the way to go, however that is mostly considering weight and depth of the keys (like how far down you can push them) I would say between Arturia and novation velocity wise you won’t be displeased either way as in my experience they both do a great job of responding to how hard the keys are being played. I would also take size into consideration tho as I believe the keys on the Arturia will be wider thus being a bit more like a real piano. Again, not a piano player but those are the main things I think people who are would keep in mind while trying to make their choice.

      As far as mk2 vs mk3 the keys on the mk2 felt a bit more natural to play, not sure if that’s due to my mk2 having a lot more use and wear to it, but that was one of my first notes after unboxing the mk3, hope this helps with your decision, I think if you are using ableton, the ableton integration from novation is definitely going to be something you get a lot of use out of tho so if you are willing to sacrifice a bit of build quality that is also something to strongly keep in mind.

      @@stiptreezy8481 thanks so much, that’s helped me a lot! I’ll definitely have to give the launchkey more consideration.

    This is such a great video! Ive been shopping around for a digital piano or MIDI keyboard for my home studio for the purpose of composition and experimentation and that Alesis looks close to ideal, especially with your appraisal and hoo boy you cant beat that price haha

      Download the MIDI Control Center from here:
      www.arturia.com/support/updates&manuals
      Or from the Arturia Software Center.
      Then in the MIDI Control Center, edit the Pad Velocity Curve Setting in DEVICE SETTINGS:

    What a great review. I'm glad someone as well known as you made this video, as it's really quite informative as to what you get for what you pay.
    I personally use M-Audio's axiom air mini 32, the one shown on video and it's helped me so much in my time as a musician. It's not an amazing experiences but it's affordable for someone doing music entirely as a hobby.
