I love Westies, Sami, and your channel. I recently switched from canned food to preparing my dog's food myself. That one change cleared her tear stains, eye discharge, and the orange tint around her mouth and feet. Super Thank You to both you and Sami for such great videos!!!
I have a westie and we were told to use Natural Spring Water for his water. We have not had any browning/orange face or paw issues. Even our vet is amazed at how white he has remained.
I liked this this video. My Gracie is very white and she uses a stainless bowl for water but I do use bottled water and that has made such a difference for sure…
We are so fortunate that our dog Rocky has no discoloration on feet, mouth or tear ducts. Especially because he was a rescue from a puppy mill and was living in horrible conditions. Can you please make a video of you cooking Sami's food? Start to finish?
Our Cora has no problems with that either! We bought her from a Kennel in Nebraska called Shay Westie Kennels. She was definitely a pure breed compared to our last Westie we purchased from a pet shop in Mission Viejo, CA
Its good that you brush his teeth. Our 6yo Westie had to get his 4 bottom teeth pulled last year. 😢 I am now diligent about keeping his teeth brushed. Its not his favorite thing but he tolerates it - unlike getting his paws trimmed. 😬
Same here, Sami tolerates it 😅 What he really hates is getting his nails trimmed. He has a phobia of the clippers, so I need to use a dog nail grinder.
Very good points! My Bella got it once a few years ago! And after a while it just went away back to pearl white! But again this year at the age of 11 last January started to come back! No body really knows why! I first thought change of diet may have caused it , because of her anemia I decided to add liver to her homemade food!!!!!I stopped it right away but the stain is getting deeper! My specialist says it could be her allergy and recommended dermatologist visit. I would say it gets better with frequent bath! After all westie are very prone to allergy and we live in a high allergy city!
Did the dermatologist help with the allergy? Yeah, I noticed too, whenever Sami has skin problems around the mouth, he keeps scratching and he tends to drool a little and I think that causes the staining. I hope both the allergies and the stains go away!
@@WestieVibes we haven’t seen the dermatologist yet! There’s a two month waiting list in our area! One of the top dermatologist just retired and believe it or not we don’t have many in Dallas area! 😳 I’m just drying and wiping paws and mouth as you recommended for now.
Hi, I have a westie, and while all those are great things, I find mixing baking soda and cornstarch together with a few drops of say lavender oil mix well and and sprinkle on their back, take some in Your hands rub around the part of face that is stained. And beautiful white, plus it makes a great waterless shampoo to keep your baby looking and smelling good between baths.
Thank you for this video. We live in a climate with long winter period of time and I notice that my westie fur become more color during this season. So apparently the moisture is the main reason
Ciao Miruna ! Of course I'll leave you a Super Thank You!!! you know that I always watch your videos because I find Sami fantastic, even if I love my Mickey, who is a little clumsy, compared to Sami who is always joyful. Mine is 4 years old, but he is calm, intelligent but... very responsible... while Sami always seems like a puppy! Going back to the fact of the brown hairs around the mouth, mine has them too, I clean them at the end of lunch and dry them when he drinks, but they remain a little. I use the same shampoo as yours and I find it excellent, because it leaves a shiny white. Thank you, because every time I compare myself with you, who are very good and take the time to inform us, so..... HELLO! Cheerful
Ciao Allegra, thanks so much for your lovely comment! ❤️ It sounds like you are an amazing dog mom and taking such great care of your Mickey! I love how you describe him as responsible - Sami is like that too! Maybe in my videos you can't see it, but in day to day life Sami is quite serious, always guarding, always in control of his surroundings. Whenever we go somewhere with him, like at the park or on vacation somewhere, he is very guarded and tense, haha. He is only like a puppy when we are at home and he feels safe and he can relax. So, I don't think Mickey is very different from Sami. I just try to show Sami's "best moments" in my videos, haha! But he is definitely not always carefree and funny as he seems!
..so do you add sweet potatoe, carrots, pumpkin to the kible, or thats it? Please or hiw do u make my westie food and nake sure its well balanced? Thankyou April
I do the same for the paws: keep them dry as much as possible (that means no obsessive licking and always dry them after bath or rain) and trim every month or so.
ps,: Sometimes, when his paws are a little brown (because he licks them... and I don't know why he does it ??)... then, I massage the fingertips and the fur above the nails with "Amuchina" which also disinfects
I don't know Amuchina, but if it disinfects it probably also dries the skin. Does he get little flakes around the nails, like the dead, dry skin is peeling off? Sami has those and I think they are itchy, which makes them lick the paws. You could try a paw balm (or plain vaseline) on his fingertips and nails before sleep, to keep the skin hydrated.
@@WestieVibes Thanks for the suggestion, Vaseline is perfect, I'll do it tonight. He took a bath today, and he's white-glowing! (it's very hot here!! so he didn't complain, on the contrary...) then I cleaned his paws and dried them well, as I saw you do, I cut the hair between his fingertips which was really thick!! (but don't they cut them in grooming?) meh. However from your videos I learned a lot about cleaning, think I ordered the nail file... the one like yours on Amazon!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH from me and MICKEY!!! (name because he loves cheese, milk and ice cream)!!!...hihi = greedy
Thankfully no, he never marked. I think training helped a lot, I took him to training classes since he was 4 months old so he learned early on not to mark in the house, chew on things or generally do anything "bad". I also think me working from home helped too, because I was always with him, giving him food puzzles to solve, socializing him with people and dogs, so he was quite busy and entertained. And maybe they mark when they are bored/frustrated because they don't feel stimulated enough in day to day. This is my opinion, but I recommend you talk to a dog trainer 😊
Exactly what my husband said as we drove our Westie to the vet to get 4 teeth pulled. We are lucky we were able to save the others. Like people, some dogs have more problems with tartar and gum disease than others. Unfortunately we have a dog that is susceptible to gum problems
I used to have a really brown mush. Humans thought it was because of the Rosehip powder they use on my food for my joints. But when we moved to Japan it just disappeared and now my mush is super white all the time. They didn’t change a thing They think it’s because of the water as it’s the only different thing we have inadvertently done. Even though we used to give filtered water in other countries and now we drink tap water. So we are the other way round. The humans do say their hair is a lot nicer since moving here too 😅 As soon as we go on a trip you can see the difference pretty quickly then when we get back to Japan it goes white just as quick!

Absolutely true. Believe me dog teeth problems were a surprise to us! We had dogs in the 70s and 80s - teeth brushing was not a thing.
