  • Today, we would like to share with you our story of battling tear stains and what YOU can do to prevent them or get rid of them systematically.
Getting rid of tear stains is not an easy task, but can be done with persistence and patience.
Here are 6 basic steps to prevent or battle tear stains:
STEP 1: Frequently clean the eye area from any dust or dirt, especialy after a walk.
STEP 2: Check if the eye area is wet from excessive tearing and dry out if necessary.
STEP 3: Keep the hair around eyes short.
STEP 4: Make sure the staining is not caused by food by changing each part of your dogs diet (main food and any snacks) every one or two week until you see improvement.
STEP 5: Make sure your dogs' drinking water does not contain excess minerals (especially iron)
STEP 6: Check with your veterinarian about possible fungi or infections.

With both of our Maltese babies, we found that some water could cause stains. We stopped using stainless steel dishes and switched to white porcelain, along with using only bottled water. We also switched from chicken to lamb for food and treats. Keeping the eyes dry and clean and the hair around the eyes short, also worked, as you stated. We used a paste of baking soda and water when needed, making sure to keep it out of the eyes. Such sweet, beautiful doggies should look as gorgeous as possible… they deserve all the love that can be given because they give all their love to you🙏❤️😘💕

@@melodiethomas3765 you can use a paste of baking soda & water around the eyes, being super careful not to get it in the eyes!

What was your recipe for the baking soda and water? Basically how much baking soda and how much water? How long did you leave it on?

Doggie always has bad tear stains and it's so difficult to deal with. But please make sure there is no underlying problem first. Make sure, as I did not, and there was a problem with glaucoma and an ulcer. Doggie was in pain and lost her eye 😢. Sometimes the eye weeps for a reason......

I will not limit his food selection for tear stains. My baby will enjoy it all. I do my best to keep the stains clear and his eyes clean but I’m not going to take away yummy food or bother him with combing so frequently. Let them be it’s not that serious

Do you wash their faces often & brush them daily? My dog’s face looks a mess especially after eating. The hair is going in different directions and looks like a real bad hair day while your fur babies hair looks so clean and perfect.

My dog has an intolerance to lamb, it makes her fart and she suffers with HGE so not willing to take the risk, HGE can kill. She has very little tear staining because I wash her eyes with warm salt water every couple of days, this not only gets rid of the staining but it keeps it in check. My dogs main diet is chicken based - vet recommended due again to the HGE. Thanks for the. Advice but I can’t risk using it.

Great video!!! Very informative. :) My snoopy doesn't have tear stains, thank God! But I know so many gorgeous dogs who suffer from really bad tear stains. It's interesting that Yumis culprit was chicken/turkey. I've heard some ppl try antibiotics and that has helped too 😯

Well I have had Maltese as pets either singly or a pair since 1969 and never had problems till my last two siblings that the vet put on apaquell , one daily for their immune problem that made their feet itchy and therefor they licked raw! I just lost them a year apart because of untreatable cancer in their lower digestive system. One at ten and the other at eleven years old. I would rather live with the staining than lose them to antibiotics. I now have two more and so far so good using filtered water from the refrigerator. Good luck everyone!

I firstly trimmed away as much of the staining as i could then Twice per day I wipe the eye area using a face washer rinsed in a small dish of warm water and a splash of vinegar any type will do then I wipe the whole dog down using the left over mixture which keeps my Malshi looking super white all the time.

Light color of meat. Chicken breast A lot. Cleaning with baking soda and white vinegar with tooth brush.then rinse and repeat with a shampoo for white dogs I get at Walmart. I brush the shampoo down away from the eyes and let set till I give bath and rinse . Dry and brush Allie with her beautiful long white hair. Note: I get small cotton balls near skin out with dry Corn Starch and soft brush before I give bath.

Realized the chicken allergy from her having stomach issues. Vets didn’t figure it out but another Havanese owner mentioned it so I changed dog food & stopped giving her chicken/rice when not feeling well. Stopped treats too. I’ve had cockapoos before who had tear issues pretty bad but never figured out what caused it. These people are real helpful in a number of things along with some Facebook groups for Havanese owners.

I know it sounds horrible but sometimes they have hairs grown inside of the eyecorner, which you need to pluck otherwise it never gets better. Also something very nasty are the extremly long eyelashes which should be shortend from time to time.

Hii, sorry to hear you have issues with tear stains. We made a few videos on this topic. But if nothing helps then the underlying issue might be necessary to consult with a professional. As it may be more serious. Otherwise make sure to try and change completely the diet to a more controlled one and patiently care of the eye area multiple times a day. We wish you good luck 🙏🥰🐶
