Another World is rotoscoped, but it doesn't use traditional sprites, the reason why the game was easily ported to various consoles is because the engine was an executable progam that rendered all of the games assets as vector graphics at any resolution, so each element you see moving in the game is actually a polygon distorting, which is why the game has a flat artstyle to it.
Running from water... Stops... Looks at the jump... Thinks about the jump... Feels the jump... Dies... "How could I have done it any faster?" Such is life watching James play games, don't know how you do it Mike :)
This game is maybe the ultimate accomplishment of aesthetics over technical limitations. It has a completely consistent visual design that gives it a cinematic comic book feel, while still working within the need to only ever have, like, 50 polygons onscreen. It really can't be overstated just how mind-blowing this was in 1991, considering it could run on incredibly low-powered systems like the SNES or a 286 PC. ('Low powered' in this case referring to the CPU, since the way OOTW was designed it couldn't take advantage of Mode 7 or any of the other specialty hardware of the SNES used to work around its very weak core processor.)
I found this on the school library's computers in 7th or 8th grade hidden deep in a directory tree. I promptly made a copy of it to take home. I'm 39 now, this took me back. Thank you.
Flashback is another great game like this one. This game was made by a single guy and has a great documentary about it. Also, yes it was rotoscoped Mike. Love the show fellas.
As someone who really loved Another World, Heart of the Alien, Heart of Darkness and the Oddworld series. I've tried several times but never could get into Flashback, unfortunately. Just something frustrating about the controls and unintuitive gameplay.
Another World is similar to games like Prince of Persia and Flashback, and in all those games you can do a running jump, just like in this one. The game assumes the player is familiar with this sort of game.
The cutscenes (even the one with the car) were filmed by a camera, rotoscoped, redrawn on a graphic software, encoded into 2D polygons and compressed to fit on 2 Amiga diskettes (the whole intro only takes 64 KBytes). And only one person made the whole game, except for the music. That makes this game even more unique. Check the "making of" Another World on TH-cam. Oh, and the alien language is a fictive one, "Amasta" doesn't mean anything.
Heart of Darkness, anyone? That is the spiritual sequel to this game that I absolutely love! If you've played any of the Oddworld games it's kinda sorta in the same vein. You should check it out.
They didn't make it to the tank though. That was always my favorite part. Though I got it on PSN a few years ago and I don't think my son even made it past the big cat.
oh man... this game!!! Just when I thought AVGN had my childhood gaming experiences covered, watching James and Mike in those caves brings back some old rage.
It's actually kinda interesting how you taught yourself to stop and then jump at the start of the game on the vine when the monster was chasing you, and so you didn't figure out the running jump.
This game absolutely blew me away when I was a kid and watching this brought back so many frustrating memories. I'm kind of disappointed you guys didn't finish it.
I paid $125 to have a life size cardboard cutout made of Mike Matei. I cut a hole in the crotch area, inserted a cucumber and booooom... Fuck Me Mike Fridays. Pretty cool huh?
Extra levels were added to the DOS port, and it was that version of the game (including all the passwords) that ended up being ported to all the consoles.
Damn now I have to bust out Flashback and this game X-D been sooooo many years since I beat these obscure gems. These are some of the reasons why SNES is by far my favorite system EVER created. This brings back memories thank you James and Mike :).
You guys should also play Flashback: The Quest for Identity by the same developers, Delphine Software. I would recommend the Sega Genesis version, as even the creator of the game says it's the best one, although the Sega CD version is damn good too.
I remember playing Flashback on the PC. The 3D 3rd person one. Man, there were so many ways to die lol. The midi music was great too. I think they released it on the Playstation, which was way better than playing on my old 486 PC xD!
For anyone wondering, yes it was rotoscroped. Basically, the developer invented his own program to make this game, and he retraced segments using polygons. You can even find the original video for 6:50. There is a documentary about it and the guy still has the props for it. Go watch it.

Another World is a constant try and error game, and the SNES version is slower than others. It proposes a narrative style based on levels design and facts (like the foreground action in 12:04), but the try and error ruin the game.
There's a behind-the-scenes video that comes with versions of the game now (usually released under the name Another World) that gives you a glimpse into the development of the game. Eric Chahi even still has the gun and soda can that he used when filming the intro. The graphics are comprised of polygons, which is really interesting when you consider some of the hardware that this game runs on. The SNES version is one of the worst versions in terms of performance, in my opinion, but it's my understanding that the publisher cheaped out on the cartridges, so performance ended up being much more limited than was originally expected. I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to use a SuperFX chip at some point, but that didn't happen in the end.
Another World and Flashback were my favourite games as a kid. Another World still gives me chills. The pc version is way better than the snes one which was uncommon for the time that a PC version was superior than a 16 bit console game.
This was one of those obscure games I played as a kid that nobody else had ever seemed to even hear of. I usually got stuck at the cave flooding section, but one time I made it past that and got all the way to the tank section, but had no idea what to do and died. From what I've seen on TH-cam, I was actually pretty close to the end.
One of the all time greats! You should really be playing the HD version available straight from the creator, though (or even the original PC version, which runs substantially better than the SNES one).
Figured that Heavy Metal is more well known, so my mind went right to Scanner Darkly because he couldn't think of the name. But that's a damn good one!
I found some wiki on Suda51 and stuff he's referenced and anyone who references Joy Division and Jean-Luc Godard is great with me....man he has similar tastes as Kojima as well (and I enjoy both of those things)
Oh, c'mon guys, don't be assholes. Another world is one of THE best games of all time and instant classic. Eric Chahi did incredible work here. You cannot compare it to Dragon Lair seriously. Just throw away Snes controller and get Another version (like PC).
Nice! I was just thinking last Monday that I would love to see you guys play Out of this World, and here it is! Thanks for the mind read :) Never got to play this one much (hence why I was curious to see a James and Mike on it), but I did multiple play-throughs of Flashback when I was a kid.. I was obsessed with it.. Thanks again!
this game was created on the Commodore Amiga 500 like many other great games like turrican, worms, lemmings, I think it deserved more recognition. It would be great if you review some of them. cheers
This game started out on the Amiga. The Amiga was like the Neo Geo of the PC world: a mythical supercomputer with mind-bending graphics and sound that you only heard rumors of, and dreamed about owning.
Try the Sega CD version it is the superior version. There is also a sequel to this game and i think the Sega CD version has both games in 1 disc. It is called "Heart of the Alien" and is the best thing to own if you like Out of this World. I would also like to point out the game "Flashback the Quest for Identity" on any console, but this game too is superior on Sega CD and is the same genre of game as Out of this World. Most of the multiplatform titles that were lucky enough to get a Sega CD release are superior versions of all of them. I know the Sega CD is shit on a lot because of the FMV games but if you just pretend those games don't exist you are left with a pretty decent library for the 16-Bit era.
Heart of the Alien is a terrible game. It plays every bit as poorly as this game does with abysmal trial-and-error gameplay, but on top of that, it also has an incredibly unsatisfying ending to Lester's story and to the whole "Another World" universe in general and an even worse soundtrack and presentation style (which was arguably the only thing this game had going for it to begin with). As for Flashback, that was slightly better but still only just barely playable by today's standards.
so awesome! I can't remember if I commented on a previous video, but I was definitely thinking about telling you guys to do this game in an episode. takes me way back! good shit guys
P Ferreira Marketing people tend to overturn things. If they thought even a small percentage of kids might be turned off because a game had the same name as their mom's favorite show, then they could have figured it was worth the change.
Flackback started with that jungle level! I was never able to get past that level! you get that gun but its only get a few rounds before thats depleted and I was never able to find any more ammo! the only thing i remember about the story (kinda ironically) was that the main protagonist was suffering from some kind of mind wipe
there is a terrible remake on xbox 360. stay away from that. You should look the playthrough just a little bit enouth to make you keep going. This was a pretty cinematic game for its time. Its really great to unravel the story on your own. greetings from Brazil
Played this on our Amiga 500 back in the day. Was amazing then, still great today. Bloody frustrating in parts, though. That water cave was tough. Also the controls were a little smoother on the Amiga, or so it seems. I still find myself humming the tune from the ending every now and then. And the name is Another World. Has to be.
The most impressive part of the SNES port of "Another World"/"Out Of This World" is that it is rendered, audio and video, entirely in software. None of the SNES's hardware acceleration was utilized while running the game.
You wanna run and jump, you don't have to stop to jump. It's tricky, but you have to get used to fast movement. The tricky part is learning the patterns, but once you do, it's amazing. Seriously, I'd love to show you guys, because the further you get, the better it gets.
This game is amazing. It was one of my favorites. Absolutely not one word spoken throughout the whole game, but you could tell what was happening just by the action, body language of the characters, cutscenes and background/foreground action you can't control. Like your friend being chased right after you shoot that guard when you get outside again at 12:00, there's a lot of that. Even before going in the "sideways tunnels with the steam", if you stay right under your friend and that guard before dropping down, you'll see their feet move as if they're fighting. The camaraderie between Lester and his alien friend, the quest for survival. Simply amazing. The end always left me perplexed to say the least and always wondered if they could have made a sequel. Hell, a movie could be made about this story and I would love it! That part with the water in the cave, you just have to run like mad and run-jump (not stop and jump, you won't make it like that) all the holes you come across if I remember correctly.
Chico and Rita (2010) is was an animation movie that was 100% rotoscope (good example for that technique). They film an entire live action feature film and they animated everything on top of that.
Another World is rotoscoped, but it doesn't use traditional sprites, the reason why the game was easily ported to various consoles is because the engine was an executable progam that rendered all of the games assets as vector graphics at any resolution, so each element you see moving in the game is actually a polygon distorting, which is why the game has a flat artstyle to it.
aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa So there's code out there that exists to make this game playable in 4K?
LimeGreenTeknii Technically yes but you would need to update the assets to the resolution
There is an HD PC version, made a few years ago.
aquelescaraaaaaaaaaa nerd
What are vector graphics? I'll Google it too ;)
Running from water... Stops... Looks at the jump... Thinks about the jump... Feels the jump... Dies... "How could I have done it any faster?" Such is life watching James play games, don't know how you do it Mike :)
Yeah man, (2 years ago), Mike knows games and the avgn kinda just... sucks
One of my fav games of all time. I rented this when I was sick home from school for a few days as a kid. Amazing to this day.
A funny fact is that the hero's name is ACTUALLY Lester. Not kidding.
Lester the Unlikely would not at all be inappropriate to call him.
i laughed at that comment for this exact reason. lmao
Lester Knigth Chayking

Good ole days brah
Flashback is another great game like this one. This game was made by a single guy and has a great documentary about it. Also, yes it was rotoscoped Mike. Love the show fellas.
As someone who really loved Another World, Heart of the Alien, Heart of Darkness and the Oddworld series. I've tried several times but never could get into Flashback, unfortunately. Just something frustrating about the controls and unintuitive gameplay.
flashback is the sequel to another world :)
PolygonStew beat me to it. Flashback was one of my favorite SNES games. I'm glad someone else has played it.
i always found the teleporter mechanic in flashback to be fun.
Another World - Making of. Its here on TH-cam. look up Eric Chahi
One of my favorite games from my childhood. I love sitting down and beating it from time to time.
Why are you stopping to jump? The only way you can get away from the water is running and jumping.
Another World is similar to games like Prince of Persia and Flashback, and in all those games you can do a running jump, just like in this one. The game assumes the player is familiar with this sort of game.
I think the game just assumes you're not an idiot... Buuuuuuut, I'm starting to think the Angry Videogame Nerd should be the Bad At Videogames Nerd.
Deathbrewer Anyone who plays games can deduce running and jumping.
If you need to Google whether you can do it or not you're doing it wrong.
this game is not user friendly AT ALL and that's part of the charm, so I don't blame them for not knowing what the hell is going on.
Thats true! also don't you have to shoot that T shaped rock down the other end of the passage so you can completely run away from the water?
It was rotoscoped, like Prince of persia. I would really recommend looking for a making of. Eric Chahi is amazing.
I would also recommend playing the 25th aniversary edition
And Flashback, another game from Delphine
Fucking Mike is always talking out of his ass. He never does any research.
you can do running jumps and that electric room charges the gun!
The cutscenes (even the one with the car) were filmed by a camera, rotoscoped, redrawn on a graphic software, encoded into 2D polygons and compressed to fit on 2 Amiga diskettes (the whole intro only takes 64 KBytes). Oh, and the alien language is a fictive one, "Amasta" doesn't mean anything.
Completely agree man, this game intimidated the hell out of me as a kid! It seemed SO next level graphics back then. Fun times.
Heart of Darkness, anyone? That is the spiritual sequel to this game that I absolutely love! If you've played any of the Oddworld games it's kinda sorta in the same vein. You should check it out.
Thats what I was thinking. They definitely should play heart of darkness
Do you mean Heart of the Alien?
Heart of darkness was simply amazing if I remember correctly it was on ps1
I remember this game scaring the shit out of me as a kid
Same here
I remember this game pissing me off!
I remember this kid scaring the game out of me as a shit
Eric Chahi made this game all alone, except the music. It's considered a piece of art, no kidding
oh c'mon all you needed to do was a running jump((
i was hoping you would at least get a bit further....*sigh*
BRTD 2005 lol this game is hard I was thinking the underground would be too hard for them. but I was surprised they kept playing and made it that far.
They didn't make it to the tank though. That was always my favorite part.
Though I got it on PSN a few years ago and I don't think my son even made it past the big cat.
John McDonald I got stuck on the bit where you bounce off the sun Canopy on the window back when I was a kid.
boo hoo
I always love coming back to this episode. Love you boys! Please play this again! BEAT IT!
I would love to see you guys complete this game! It's really intense and fun to watch!
I loved this game as a kid, and it looks like it still holds up. This is exactly the kind of game that's perfectly for a let's play video.
MIKE ARUBA!!
:D
My Caruba
My Car Roomba!
MAC-LUMBA!
I always heard it as MY TUBA :P.
oh man... this game!!!
5:55 "I don't have friends, I have family"
Some of Heineman's finest work! A port of such a huge, complex looking game, squeezed onto a stock SNES cart.
This game absolutely blew me away when I was a kid and watching this brought back so many frustrating memories. I'm kind of disappointed you guys didn't finish it.
The graphics blew my mind back in the day :D
I have absolutely adored this game for as long as i can remember, so glad to see you guys playing this! Thanks!
Who would win in a fight: Mike Matei or Mike Aruba?
Aaron Carnes whoever has the bigger dick
Mycaruba
Aaron Carnes I always thought he said Mike Ruba lol
I paid $125 to have a life size cardboard cutout made of Mike Matei. I cut a hole in the crotch area, inserted a cucumber and booooom... Fuck Me Mike Fridays. Pretty cool huh?
Matei. On my language "matei" means "i killed".
That game was so mysterious and amazing! I got it on Steam almost 20 years later.
Amiga 500 version was awesome!
I'd say that was the definitive version.
I agree.. And playing it on the Amiga 500 back in the day was kickass! This looks and sounds like shit!
Extra levels were added to the DOS port, and it was that version of the game (including all the passwords) that ended up being ported to all the consoles.
Do you know which levels were added?
Amiga CD32 is a console.

I'd love to see Mike and James play Shadowrun.
That would be awesome! Such a great game, probably my favorite on the SNES.
When I was in Middle School, I borrowed this game from a friend and played it nonstop. It was ahead of it's time for sure.
For anyone wondering, yes it was rotoscroped. Basically, the developer invented his own program to make this game, and he retraced segments using polygons. You can even find the original video for 6:50. There is a documentary about it and the guy still has the props for it. Go watch it.

The Snes version seems a bit more forgiving than the Amiga versions and the genesis versions because its got more checkpoints
Maybe because of it's demanding framerate.
EVERY GAME..IS TRIAL AND ERROR
Umm... I seem to recall checkpoints are based on levels and all versions have the same passwords for each level.
@Omega Tron: Nope, some are more skill and inelegance based.
There's a behind-the-scenes video that comes with versions of the game now (usually released under the name Another World) that gives you a glimpse into the development of the game. I'm pretty sure that it was supposed to use a SuperFX chip at some point, but that didn't happen in the end.
It's too bad that you couldn't finish it. Maybe Mike could do a play through.
Fred T. McCoy Jr. better than nothing I guess huh?
It's too bad they couldn't figure out how to run and jump.
you guys were on the right track. your problem was stopping before the gap. hold down the run button and keep jumping!
You can't stop to jump. You hace to keep running and time your jumps so you can pass over the holes in the ground.
This game was one of a kind. I can still beat it to this day. Flashback is another great game that used the same style of animation.
Looks very similar to the original Prince of Persia.
You guys should play that one day!!
One of the coolest old-timey SNES games.
This game looks amazing! How have I never seen it before?
that's exactly the part i couldn't get past when i played this as a kid. i was hoping to see you guys do it!
One of the all time greats! You should really be playing the HD version available straight from the creator, though (or even the original PC version, which runs substantially better than the SNES one).
Amante if it’s the 20 anniversary those graphics are ass
I remember playing this as a kid. that part with the water took me forever to get past.
I remember this game. The monster at 4:30 looks like the aliens from the movie "Attack the block".
"The Potatoe Head Face.."👉🥔
Everyone loves that guy..Hes the people's champ..🥇
it's funny that you mentioned lester the unlikely because the guy in out of this world is actually named lester
This is one of my favorite games. Flashback is very similar.
Totally loved this game, the ending is sad though!
wish you guys would make a 2nd part video of this amazing game.
"that should be the thumbnail"
*checks if it became the thumbnail*
DONT STOP TO JUMP! (Full playthrough please. I love this game, would love to you guys finishing it as well.)
A Scanner Darkly, James, you're thinking of "A Scanner Darkly".
I thought maybe he was thinking of Heavy Metal
Figured that Heavy Metal is more well known, so my mind went right to Scanner Darkly because he couldn't think of the name. But that's a damn good one!
I was thinking of the other LInklater one Waking Life. But you're probably right.
"Wizards" has some of that in various scenes. Sequences from other war movies along with stock war footage were rotoscoped.
ordinaryJeff now THAT was a good movie
somehow this version has the best sound and music
this game felt like a 3D game before there were any 3D games
I played this game on Amiga 600 back in 1995! I loved it!
There's a sequel for this game on Sega CD called "Heart of the Alien".
Hey mister...motzellla.....Matzuba! Loved the sound of the weapon when it builds up to full power, great game.
This is Suda51's favorite game and Violence Jack is his favorite manga
The man has good taste in everything
Also Prince of Persia was rotoscoped Mike
I found some wiki on Suda51 and stuff he's referenced and anyone who references Joy Division and Jean-Luc Godard is great with me....man he has similar tastes as Kojima as well (and I enjoy both of those things)
Great to see some SNES again.
Thanks for the mind read :)
Never got to play this one much (hence why I was curious to see a James and Mike on it), but I did multiple play-throughs of Flashback when I was a kid.. I was obsessed with it..
Thanks again!
This and flashback(another great title you should play, I suggest the genesis version!) were roto'ed in the same style Mike!
Valentino Thank you Valentino.
Valentino Thank you Valentino.
Valentino Thank you Valentino.
fuck you.
Valentino Thank you Valentino.
this game was created on the Commodore Amiga 500 like many other great games like turrican, worms, lemmings, I think it deserved more recognition. It would be great if you review some of them. cheers
MY CAR ROOMBA
This is a classic game and I really enjoyed watching you guys play it, good fun haha :D
Lord of the Rings from Ralph Bakhshi was rotoscope.
This game started out on the Amiga. The Amiga was like the Neo Geo of the PC world: a mythical supercomputer with mind-bending graphics and sound that you only heard rumors of, and dreamed about owning.
I love cinematic 16-bit games like this and Flashback. Another game this also reminds me of, Heart of Darkness on PC and PS1 :-)
These guys playing old games without consulting instruction booklets is always kinda humorous.
As for Flashback, that was slightly better but still only just barely playable by today's standards.
I've beat this game when I was 13 years old, back in 1993. Good stuff.
Liar!
How did you get past the part that's a total dead end?
MYCRUBA
So glad you guys played this game. I could never remember the name of it! Had it for Genesis, never finished it.
and they skipped the best part of the game: Mike Aruba
so awesome! I can't remember if I commented on a previous video, but I was definitely thinking about telling you guys to do this game in an episode. takes me way back! good shit guys
great game, but snes version looks like it's not running well.
AWE !! Brings back some memories.
Isn't this another world?
I think there was already another game with a similar name in the states at the time!
WolfBetter There was a popular daytime soap opera called Another World at the time. That could have been the motivation for the name change.
Thanks for the info!
P Ferreira Marketing people tend to overturn things. If they thought even a small percentage of kids might be turned off because a game had the same name as their mom's favorite show, then they could have figured it was worth the change.
P Ferreira It is pretty silly.
I enjoyed the "Game Over worm" in the beginning.
second best ever, only to Flashback
Flackback started with that jungle level! I was never able to get past that level! you get that gun but its only get a few rounds before thats depleted and I was never able to find any more ammo! the only thing i remember about the story (kinda ironically) was that the main protagonist was suffering from some kind of mind wipe

greetings from Brazil
Please, try again! Part2! It's always a pleasure to see someone discover this game. Just run and jump same time. It's easy;)
why are you always playing the inferior versions of these games? bully on ps2, king kong on ps2, another world on snes...
Another game from the golden age. What amazes me the most is that its creator, Eric Chahi, put his game (and still does) on a vast array of platforms.
Don´t quit, please keep playing!
It's funny to me remembering how "advanced" this game was for its time. I still have the SNES gametape. Good to see Mike Aruba!
Has to be.
15:33 To jump, you don't have to stop. You can jump while running.
Heavy Metal is another animated film that utilizes rotoscoping, and is fucking awesome!

Oh damn, never even know there was actually one.
Chico and Rita (2010) is was an animation movie that was 100% rotoscope (good example for that technique). They film an entire live action feature film and they animated everything on top of that.
Two of the rotoscoped sequences are the part where he opens the can of soda and where you he picks the gun. It still looks fantastic!
