+MegamanNG I agree, but people seem to forget about Eveline Fischer who produced and composed a lot of the tracks like Ice Cave Chant, Forest Frenzy, and Robin Beanland who did Funky's Fugue! I love David's work to bits, but the people he worked with also deserve credit! :)
+crashinator1 It's because this channel is all about nostalgia. The phrase "He's going to take you back to the past" on the AVGN theme. That was literal on this channel in general. That's why he plays mostly the older games. I also get the feeling that Mike and James are not a fan of games with a lot of cutscene in the story, they just want to play the game and PS2 and every generation after that does a lot of that. Though Mike is actually abit more open minded because he does play some of the recent games/movies and some 2000 era stuff. But I think it's just this channel has a guideline for some of the older classic stuff. I can see partially why. So many people are already reviewing PS4, Nintendo Wii U games and such. Which doesn't really suit them. But honestly I have no problem with them playing and talking anything between PS1-PS4 or Xbox, Nintendo around that time too. Hell even some PC would be cool to see them try.
+Intimidation i know right sense first level of it begins kind of the area after the last one from the first game ends. i was like totally WOW back in the day
My favorite thing is smoking a bowl and listening to that it's my favorite SNES track, the next few of my favorites are Spark Mandril theme from Megaman X, Awakening from FF3/6, Corneria theme from Star Fox, and the Dungeon theme from LoZ: ALttP.
I don't see it as a mistake. Rare was slipping in quality by that time. They weren't giving much respect to Nintendo properties with both Donkey Kong 64 and Star Fox Adventure being disappointing titles. The only truly great Rare game at the end there was Banjo-Tooie.
+Ketorulz I do own Conker's, but I wasn't impressed with it. Felt like it was just going for shock novelty with game play a distant second in priority. Though better than DK64, certainly.
Donkey Kong Country is where Nintendo turned the tide on the 16-bit war with the Sega Genesis. At the time of it's release, Sega was pushing the 32X add-on...so Nintendo sends the message to gamers, "Hey, we got this great new game that looks BETTER than anything on the 32X, and you can play it right on your SNES system...no add-ons required!
***** Donkey Kong Country was released in November 1994...a year before the Playstation. Nintendo's marketing was taking aim at the 32X which had just come out...not a system that was still one year down the road, and one that people didn't even know was going to be successful. Watch some old Donkey Kong Country commercials on TH-cam...they specifically mention Sega and the 32X in the commercials.
+Yes Imsure No DKC does not "pale" in comparison to early PSX games. Partly because 3D back then was shitty. I don't think you can find anything this smooth looking on early PSX. Many people were saying it was the most beautiful thing they had ever seen, in a videogame. Also DKC came out in 1994.
+Baigandine L DKC isn't even actual 3D actually. the characters and backgrounds are 3D renders that where choppily digitized into sprites that looks almost as dated and muddy as hell even a few years after release . The DKC games are good games however that are fun and have great music (except for the 3rd...)
but the gaming market was looking forward to the future and that was seen in 3D titles in 94, The pc market had already had a ton of polygonal 3d titles out and announced as well as the arcades at the time. Also the PSX and the Saturn where released in japan that year which launch titles look better than DKC graphically. DKC was the last ditch effort of Nintendo to keep their console relevant until they could release the N64.
+Kyrion Red I think they would just talk about how badly designed those levels are, cause in reality: They are poorly designed. Not that original either. Only Companion Spring 2 is somewhat good.
@@johnnyace2287 well it's not really roll jump, it's really a roll that follows up with a run so it when you jump, you gain more distance in your jump.

This was awesome. Two dudes relaxing, playing a video game and talking about whatever....love it! I found myself cheering for James and holding my breath during the daring parts of the video game! Please keep this up!
+SirArsen I actually like DKC3. As a kid, it felt like the game who had the most mystery. I remember spending about 2 hours trying to go up a waterfall to visit new worlds only to discover 10 years later that you had to get dk coins to get there. =) I also think that the bosses are the best in DKC3. They had a better variety and were just more fun and difficult.
This is the game I play when I'm really stressed out. The gameplay and music just help chill me out and bring me to a better place. A must have SNES game.
Absolutely love this game. Sadly it was the only donkey Kong game I played. I don't want to brag but I completed the game with 107% of the secret completed. Also i won a Game Pro magazine contest for beating the game with with one of the highest secrets completion percentage. I had to take a picture of the screen and send it in for the contest. My prize for winning was any SNES game made by Nintendo that Nintendo developed. I chose Super Punch-Out 🥊
You are seriously missing out. DKC2 and 3 were fantastic games, especially the second which has probably the best soundtrack in the series. Go do it my metalhead friend.
I knew that day will eventually come and you guys will play DKC! I remember when James had trouble turning it off, when he was doing footage for SNES vs Genesis episode. It's one of the best series ever made. So much imagination, creativity, passion and work was put into those that it's just staggering, mindblowing. The atmosphere, music and simple pleasure of the gameplay are very high here. Cannot get much better than DKC series!
Memories of grandma's house are always portrayed through smells. I share this as well. My granny jake was all about baking, her house in the smoky mountains, and then later in McComb Mississippi smelled like the most comfortable place on earth. You could literally just sit and be fine. Of course, I had SNES with me many of the times I went.

Just finished this a while ago. Great game with a fantastic soundtrack. I burst out laughing at the noises James was making towards the end because I was making those same noises while I was playing. This game is intense.
Donkey Kong's wandering through a level, and later he sees Cranky eating his secret stash of cookies. Suddenly, he goes Arnold Schwarzenegger on him shouting, "PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN!"

Patrick Andrews I was just joking, you know, like how people say once you're married and have children you're getting old and have no time for videogames anymore. But I'm sure we're all thankful James is one of those good guys who doesn't go for that crap!
Awesome guys! I think you guys should do a run through of Clock Tower! It's an interesting game with great horror vibes, especially if you're fond of Dario Argento! Thanks guys, hope you get to see my request. And as always thanks for the amazing content.
I just really like that noise when James is pushing buttons and you can hear the snaps and switches of holding more than one button to run and jump back and forth. Classic.
Love this title. Indeed, it was a graphical feat to pull this off on the SNES, and the music for me was probably the best of any SNES title I'd ever heard at that point. Unforgettable.
+Adam Hauger I wasn't subscribed to Nintendo Power but i got it also. I remember them showing Killer instinct sneak peek at the end of the video. I was so pumped to get KI after seeing that.
"When you play a game it reminds you of what was going on in your life at that time." My most vivid pet-related memory was playing Beetle Adventure Racing and my cat kept rubbing her head on the R button, which was Nitro/Boost. Made for some interesting races.
qv43v It's always kind of hilarious watching people freak out about trying to get KONG letters or other items they believe are impossible to get because they don't know you can roll jump. I don't even remember how I got to learning it, probably just on accident. About learning things on accident, I really want to know how anyone found the final bonus room in Oil Drum Alley... I had promised myself I'd find every bonus room in the game by myself, but I eventually gave in after jumping off the edge countless times to try to find a bonus barrel and I didn't feel sorry for looking it up when I found out how cryptically hidden it was.
You're right Mike it was the Atari 7800 ep when the Nerd dropped the TV on his foot. For ages I thought it was the intro song to one of the followup games but after a while I finally remembered it was King K Rool's theme.
Always liked DK2 better. I like the darker tone and look and the levels were more interesting then DK1. Still this game is awesome. DK3 is also pretty good but always found that one a let down after 2. It's tonally the polar opposite and they toned down the difficulty to much. Getting 100% in 3 was a joke.
it used to run on TV here. it's visually awful (well, not ReBoot level, but fair for a CG TV show in 1998 - it sucks more on character design), but it's pretty fun to watch.
I kinda had a similar experience while playing a game. instead of a dog fart and donkey kong it was krispy kream and banjo tooie. Every time I play it I can't stop thinking about the doughnuts I ate while playing it.
Octavia Black Are you sure you you just didn't find the way out of that situation? I've had the game for years and literally never had this happen nor have I heard of it before so that's why I'm wondering. I mean, for the longest time I thought you could screw yourself in the Gerudo Training Grounds if you opened the doors in the incorrect order and run out of keys until I found where another one was hidden.
+odiumimbues David wise was one of the best composers of the 20th century. I have remixes and trance music from all the donkey kongs on my favorites playlist. The music is perfect. Highly underrated composer. remember the name DAVID WISE
James Yor right!!!! That music from that final stage!!!! Its so sick! I was always looking for that. You used it in in one of your episodes of AVGN that reminded me of it again. That transition from jolly roger sound to synth rock sound is EPIC!!!
This episode and the 4 part Super Metroid are my fav JAMM episodes. Great work! Haven't watched the Link to the Past episodes yet but not until I play that one myself.
Steven Clark Yeah, same here. I liked the one in Twilight Princess, though it was hard as fuck. Skyward Sword's Floria Lake/Ancient Cistern level was fun, though not quite a traditional water temple. Still, Ancient Cistern has one of my favourite boss battles of the whole series.
Thanks guys. It was a screamin deal. I got donky kong country, mario allstars, Metroid in box (nes) and a bunch of boxes and manuals for $20 all together. I was pretty damn stoked about it. I don't think so. Just because that's not the way they were saying it in the video, and that's what he was likely responding to. I could be wrong though. No big deal haha
+LightBreaker It's a contraction, so it'd be more correct to pronounce it as close to saying "pocket" as you can. You can hear it pronounced a bit like this in Roxie's gym theme in B&W2. Then different languages and accent's say "pocket" differently, so an exact pronunciation is kind of not possible.
I was watching this and thought, wow he sucks, slow as hell, gets hit by obvious claptraps, doesn't even know all the shortcuts or how to rock the bonus areas lol how can this be, he's THE NERD... then I realized it's because he was playing all these shitty games while I was just replaying DKC. Guy's a trooper.
The gfx in this game were entirely pre-rendered on a supercomputer and imported frame by frame into the game, Rare explained the whole process in an episode of Bad Influence on British TV.

+Peter Washington he's getting old...
+corbinamondo he's like 35 ffs, not old enough to lose memory.
james knew what it was as a kid because of the genesis vs snes video idk why he didnt this particular videoi guess he just completely forgot about it
Patrick Andrews I was just joking, you know, like how people say once you're married and have children you're getting old and have no time for videogames anymore. But I'm sure we're all thankful James is one of those good guys who doesn't go for that crap!
corbinamondo
I sure hope he still makes time for recreational gaming
15:26 - 19:21 High class commentary. 😌👌
The ambiance with the dog farts, priceless XD
Awesome guys! I think you guys should do a run through of Clock Tower! It's an interesting game with great horror vibes, especially if you're fond of Dario Argento!
Thanks guys, hope you get to see my request. And as always thanks for the amazing content.
+Undead Dead Guy Thats a great game,i hope that they will get to play it someday.
Sonic The Hedgehog the Original Genesis Game had a cool Water Level.
Dudes. The best Christmas movie is Die Hard.
its a good movie that takes place on christmas how is that edgy?
fuckin' A, man.
Santa Claus and His Ho Ho Ho's
Christmas Vacation
Bad Santa
I just really like that noise when James is pushing buttons and you can hear the snaps and switches of holding more than one button to run and jump back and forth. Classic.
4:38 Usually when a content creator references their own work it's taboo, but when James does it it's like Christmas
I remember this game and by the way two words: Mine Carts!
I'll miss this banter between James and Mike
why what happened
I remember Sonic the Hedgehog 3 had multi-layered backgrounds.
All the Sonic games did.
Love this title. Indeed, it was a graphical feat to pull this off on the SNES, and the music for me was probably the best of any SNES title I'd ever heard at that point. Unforgettable.
03:30 the background moves as they talk about the advancement of backgrounds moving in games
Donkey Kong Snes games are my favourite of all time. Many people shit on it today but IMO they still
hold up.
Surprised Mike's never played DKC2.
well I would like to see those two play it
Me, too.
Dr. Lemonade dkc2 is a total masterpiece.
I remember randomly getting a VHS in the mail full of behind the scene shit a few months before this came out. Not sure how or why I got it
+Adam Hauger Subscribers to Nintendo Power magazine all got it. Still have my copy!
Superliminal advertising
he'll yeah I still got it
+Adam Hauger I wasn't subscribed to Nintendo Power but i got it also. I remember them showing Killer instinct sneak peek at the end of the video. I was so pumped to get KI after seeing that.
holy shit i remember that! my friend down the street had it.
"When you play a game it reminds you of what was going on in your life at that time." My most vivid pet-related memory was playing Beetle Adventure Racing and my cat kept rubbing her head on the R button, which was Nitro/Boost. Made for some interesting races.
That's cute! The cat wanted to play, too!
05:00 incredible, just awesome how good the graphics are in dkc, also notice the background details, nintendoes what genesis don't
Also The Game Over Screen Is Fucking Legendary Graphical, It's Like Seeing a Street Fighter Continue Screen
The lack of roll jumping really grinds my gears.
You're everywhere
Chris Macnerly I truly am.
+Kumo Hime (Rin) I'm honestly impressed how well he did not knowing about it, especially on levels like tanked up trouble.
+Drew Sebastino I beat the game without knowing about it back in the day, so it is possible, but yes, roll jumping makes a lot of things easier.
qv43v It's always kind of hilarious watching people freak out about trying to get KONG letters or other items they believe are impossible to get because they don't know you can roll jump.
That ending lmao
Weirddd, Mike talks about moving backrounds and the picture of Super Mario Bros in the background is movinggg 3:23
That's hilarious.
that's a curtain.
Loved the game sprites! This game had full 3D characters photographed and made into 2D sprites for animating. Genius idea that still looks amazing
You're right Mike it was the Atari 7800 ep when the Nerd dropped the TV on his foot. For ages I thought it was the intro song to one of the followup games but after a while I finally remembered it was King K Rool's theme.
"I'm happy as a pig in shit that we're playing this right now" - James
my mom bought a super nintendo for this game. she was very good at it.
Yep
talking about water. I'd like to know what you people think about Ecco the dolphin
This game defines my childhood playing video games.
The underwater music still gives me goosebumps all these years later. What a tune!
+devilmikey00 Come on, DKC 3 was hard as shit! At least as difficult as 2, right?
+Kleavers No, 3 was pretty easy, especially compared to 2. I mean we're talking about getting all bonus and dk coins right?
The stages in that volcano world were pretty tough though
+HorseThief Never forget the scene in DK2 where the island sinks. Full sense of accomplishment right there. :)
that ending was the best ever. Does anyone remember that 3D animated DK series? I was so young, i'm pretty sure it was awful
"I d shower you with coconut cream pies!", basically its a b-show, like a b-movie, its literally baddie but goodie also the cheesy songs man.
It's pretty much a meme now, everyone knows about it.
+Westonator5000LP It was pretty fun to watch. You should check out the Annotated version here on TH-cam.
it used to run on TV here. it's visually awful (well, not ReBoot level, but fair for a CG TV show in 1998 - it sucks more on character design), but it's pretty fun to watch.
James & Mike: "This is the greatest soundtrack of any game. LET'S TALK ALL OVER IT."
I kinda had a similar experience while playing a game. instead of a dog fart and donkey kong it was krispy kream and banjo tooie. Every time I play it I can't stop thinking about the doughnuts I ate while playing it.
3:57 I KNEW he was going to say "fuck off" hahahahaa how did I know
2 is even better.
I think people are too hard on the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time honestly. That one isn't that hard either, it just takes some time.
For me it's the block that if you pull the wrong way you have to restart the whole game.
Great Bay is harder, imo
Octavia Black What block is that? I've never encountered this issue.
It's been too long but It's at the bottom level and is the only block pull puzzle in the temple .I always hated it as a kid .
Octavia Black Are you sure you you just didn't find the way out of that situation? I've had the game for years and literally never had this happen nor have I heard of it before so that's why I'm wondering. I mean, for the longest time I thought you could screw yourself in the Gerudo Training Grounds if you opened the doors in the incorrect order and run out of keys until I found where another one was hidden.
so fucking stoked u did this game finally!!!! omfg!!
Watching you guys play takes my back to playing with my buddies when I was a kid back in the day.
You have to do DKC2, its even better than the original in my opinion!
tfw you realize from thier conversation your probably the exact same age as James and Mike
"playing this stage reminds me of smelling my dogs farts"
When the swordfish collects the tokens, mike zooms in a bit. It's very subtle but comedy gold, haha.
This episode and the 4 part Super Metroid are my fav JAMM episodes. Great work! Haven't watched the Link to the Past episodes yet but not until I play that one myself.
"Reminds me of smelling my dogs farts"
God I hate dogs. Because of how stinky they are mostly.
No love for Zelda water temples?
Steven Clark Yeah, same here. I liked the one in Twilight Princess, though it was hard as fuck. Skyward Sword's Floria Lake/Ancient Cistern level was fun, though not quite a traditional water temple. Still, Ancient Cistern has one of my favourite boss battles of the whole series.
Cap'n Mo Zelda: Oracle of Ages had a great water dungeon but it was really hard compared to the other ones. :D
ha! I just scored that this week for $5
Nice
+Nick Hughes Awesome to the max. Love those games.
Thanks guys. It was a screamin deal. I got donky kong country, mario allstars, Metroid in box (nes) and a bunch of boxes and manuals for $20 all together. I was pretty damn stoked about it. Lol
Then later in the week I got another sweet deal, contra, Mario 3, super mario kart, super mario world and two crap snes games for $20. Gotta love graigslist!!!!
James and mike, you two are the coolest guys on youtube ever, I wish I could hangout with you guys, we would be playing all kinds of games and talking about all kinds of crazy shit. James: you are my hero, mike: you are my role model. You guys bring so much joy and nostalgia to every great gamer that's ever lived, you have my support and my respect, I'll always be a huge fan of you guys, especially you james
Especially in DKC2 the music is amazing. David Wise composed masterpieces of soundtracks for the games.
I know I'm gonna get some flack but my favorite soundtrack is Undertale, now understand, as a fan of the game, the game is amazing and I love the music even more, but I agree, the Fandom is horrible, not all of it but a lot of the Fandom I seen has been really assholish.
that horrible?
i loved the game but never had much contact with the fandom.
I hate when people call it "pokey mon" 😑
+LightBreaker Doesn't really bother me much. But it's actually PoKAYmon, not PoKEYmo. I just don't like when people say Pokemans lol.
Shiggy Miyamo I understand.
I don't think so. Just because that's not the way they were saying it in the video, and that's what he was likely responding to. I could be wrong though. No big deal haha
I worked at GameStop for a few years, and that was actually really common with parents.
+I'm Dying He's also holding a conversation with Mike and performing for the camera so he's hardly 100% focused
The gfx in this game were entirely pre-rendered on a supercomputer and imported frame by frame into the game, Rare explained the whole process in an episode of Bad Influence on British TV.
Those water levels were the best water levels in gaming history. I can play those without feeling frustrated, and be so calm relaxed while the ambitious background music is playing. It's very meditative
