Oh the baby leopard! 🐆 That is utterly hilarious and so darn cute!!! 🥰 I used medium woven interfacing for mine, just the outer fabric and it’s nice and slouchy! Loving all your autumn colours!!! ❤
I’m just starting my bestie bag as well. I used buckram for the header tape of my eyelet curtains. It is very stiff. I have fusible medium interfacing for the bag, just hoping that will work and not be too floppy. Love your version. ❤
I find Vlieseline H640 or H630 best for bags. Gives them some shape but still soft and pliable. Really liked your ‘scrap’ bestie bag btw. The medium looks a good size. 👍
@@sewsarahstyle Hopefully that’ll help. 😀 Because H640/630 are a named brand of interfacing, they’re dearer but you do get quality and consistency. And if you don’t make bags a lot then you won’t need loads of it. That said, I recently bought a H640 ‘equivalent’ (or so they said) from Pound a metre. It’s arrived but I’ve not used it yet. I’ll let you know how it sews. Love your leopard print look bag. The fabric is 😍
Yep stick with the fusible fleece Sarah...the stiffer one is for weekend bags, sewing machine covers and stand up pouches for storage etc... love your vest tops and colours ❤
Hi Sarah. Don't use the Buckram it will be too stiff ( I used it in my millinery) and it is used to stiffen the header in curtains. I've used it before for bottoms of my tote bags! If you have a piece of thinnish fleece I have used that to quilt the fabric for my bags that I didn't want to be too stiff. Hope you make the baby leopard again. Love it. XX
Thank you!!! I think I need to donate the buckram, I can’t see a use for it other than bag bases. Someone has suggested quilting the lining which I think is interesting as I don’t necessarily want quilt lines on the outside velboa. Thank you, I’ll get there eventually! ❤️
Ah!! 💡 that makes sense!! Yes it’s exactly the right texture etc for that. I couldn’t work it out!! I think I need to offload it as I have a huge roll! 🤦♀️😂
I have made a few bags and I agree with you that interfacing is a bit of a minefield. Nowadays, if I am unsure, I do a little sample. For your leopard print, I would go with the fusible wadding and quilt it.
I make a few bags and never use fusible fleece as I learnt the hard way that it doesn't stay fused. I either use decovil light which is amazing stuff but expensive. It maybe a little too rigid for what you want though. The other material I use is woven fusible interfacing. Woven is far superior to non wove and once it's fused it stays fused. You could use that on the velboa as well as the lining and will give you the structure but softness you want.
Thank you!! I definitely think the woven interfacing will work, a couple of others have also mentioned that. I’ll have a look at decovil light, I’ve not heard of that before. Thanks 🥰
Hi Sarah i absolutely love your videos and I've made lots of things because of your recommendations. I made bestie bag and i am having the same issue with interfacing. I am going to try quilting the lining to give some substance to the bag rather than interfacing .
Ah that’s so lovely to hear thank you!! I have to say I love the idea of quilting the lining, thank you, I think I may try that too!! Let me know how you get on if you do it! 🥰
I want to make the Bestie Bag over the Christmas break. I’ve just checked the contents in Adam Sews in cross over bag pattern, it says to use bag making foam. I used a medium weight fusible foam on the totally totes bag I made for my holiday and it held its shape but was very soft - no stiffness. parrot & Parsnip has a great TH-cam vlog on a slouchy body bag, she uses a standard mid weight fusible interfacing
Your animal print bag, if you have spare denim or twill line the bag with that. It is durable but pliable plus wears well. Love you videos, they are always interesting.
Ah thank you!! Yes that sounds like a great idea, so it has some structure. I’m not sure how the outside fabric would work without interfacing as it’s really quite floppy. Presumably iron some interfacing to that too? Sorry I’m such a beginner with interfacing! 🤦♀️😂
I’d remove the interfacing from the ‘baby leopard’ and make a bag liner from light felt that you just set into the bag. I used to have expensive handbags and there are companies that make bag liners for them, you’d be doing your own version of that x
@ no, it just sits inside the bag so you can lift it out and pop it in another Bestie Bag without having to empty out the contents when you change bags x
I’ve made a couple of Noodlehead Making Backpacks and they get you to use fusible fleece/foam, medium weight fusible interfacing and medium weight woven fusible interfacing in different parts of the bag. The medium weight fusible interfacing is fairly stiff and might be worth trying on a sample of your velboa fabric? Love the Amara top btw, one of my next makes, I think!
Okay thank you, I have a noodlehead pattern too, so I think I I need a selection of interfacings going forward so I can choose the correct one for each project! 😮💨 😂
Your bag is gorgeous, and your baby leopard will look fabulous. I keep looking at this pattern, think it’s time to order it now. Have you tried the Avid Seamstress free drop shoulder top
Ah thanks Angela! Yes definitely get the pattern, it’s such a useful bag and I love that we can make them in whatever we like 🥰. Thanks for the reminder of the drop shoulder top, I think I printed it out ages ago and haven’t stuck it together. It’s a lovely shape though isn’t it? x
It's a fine line between too stiff then too floppy with the look of bags. I can't help though Sarah. I'll wait and read your viewers comments. Always great too see your makes and the first bestie bag is a triumph.
I was literally just looking at this pattern as I’ve wanted it for a while. I think I’d use a medium weight iron on interfacing (like the stuff they sell at Dunelm) but I’m not an expert bag maker!
Ah yes I’d definitely recommend the pattern, I love it!! I think the comments here will be helpful in determining the best type of interfacing for us non experts! 🥰
Thank you! That would have been the best solution had I not been impatient and tried to take it apart and ruined it 🤦♀️. Luckily I have enough fabric, so can re cut some but it would have saved me a lot of work to use your idea!!
Love the wool vest, and how it looks with the dress. Too bad about the fraying, I hope you find a good solution for the edges. Maybe a neat overcast stitch will do the trick? That leopard bag is very cool and worth saving! I would use the quilt batting, but not necessarily quilt it. It should add enough body for the bag to look slouchy as designed, and let the print shine. Quilting lines would kind of ruin it, imo. If anything, I would try a bit of quilting following the spots?
Yes thank you, I agree about the quilting lines, but hadn’t thought about using the batting without quilting it to the outside fabric if you know what I mean!! I’ll try using it but just attaching it at the seams. Hopefully that should work! Thanks. ☺️
I would go with a simple shirt or blazer interfacing. You do not need anything heavy because the fabric is already heavier, regular woven interfacing would probably be fine. That’s what I would go for. Don’t give up on it’s a beautiful leopard print.
Definitely fusible fleece which will make the bag slouchy like you want…buckram is far too stiff and will not soften at any point. The bag itself looks gorgeous, well done Sarah 😊
Thank you!!! Fusible fleece sounds like just what I’m looking for. The fusible fleece I have is quite thin though. I think I need to get to a shop which sells them and have a feel!!
That fusible fleece won't fuse properly .. so pull out fleece and interface your bag again .. the cotton buckram is too hard .. that's works for tote bag bases... love your baby leopard 🎉
Thank you!!! I wish I hadn’t tried to take it apart as I’ve now ripped it and your advice is the right one, I could have just tried to change the interfacing 🤦♀️ it’s such a well made pattern that there was so much topstitching I ruined it trying to save the zip 😫
Iron on fleece for a slouchy bag, by Annie’s soft and stable for a firmer bag, buckram is too stiff. I have made hundreds of bags and pouches, lots of trial and error. Do enjoy your vlogs.
Hi Sarah. Some have already recommended Soft & Stable by Annie, which is great! But sometimes I find if I put Pellon SF101 (in the UK there is Vlieseline G700 Woven Medium Weight interfacing) on first then the fleece works even better. The Buckram is used a lot in hat making, some use it in very defined collar designs and waistbands. And the foam you have works much better for making storage boxes/bins or larger bags. Again, if using it, I would fuse a lightweight interfacing to your fabric first, then the fusible foam. It will adhere better. Hope it helps!
@@sewsarahstyle Lol, far from an expert, but I've used my share of interfacing. Between garments I like to give other sewing a try and most soft home furnishing, bag and storage sewing all require a variety of the interfacings. Have fun!

😂🤦♀️😂. Thank you!! Yes I think I possibly need to stop overthinking it and keep it simple. Will try a few different tester pieces I think! ❤️
Love that lantern top too! 😍
Thank you, it’s such a fab pattern, have you made it? x
@ no, but I love it on you and may well have to make it one day xxx
Love your bestie bag 🤩
Thank you, I need one for every occasion now! 😂
@@sewsarahstyle well of course you do 😂
I love all your makes and am looking forward to finding out which interfacing solves your leopard bestie bag woes. I know you will solve this!
Ah thank you so much!! I have been gathering a few samples to try, watch this space! ❤️

Fuseable fleece will be much better for your bag ❤
Great thank you, will be getting some more!
Try Vilene fusible fleece H640.
Ooh thanks, I’ll check that out, it’s useful to have the actual numbers etc as it’s like a new language to me!! 🫣😂
Love your bag and all of your makes. Good idea for tee shirt style as another layer. Xx
Oh thank you!! I’m definitely going to make another layering t shirt; I like that look. ☺️
Love the bag pattern, I have it to make next, use woven interfacing and fusible fleece.
Thank you, it’s such a lovely pattern and I guess depends on the fabric you’re using and the feel you want! ☺️

Buckram is used for making lampshades

@ I don’t know what I use, it was in my stash for so long I just thought it looked ok 😍 I’m sure it was a bundle from pound a meter 💁♀️
Your animal print bag, if you have spare denim or twill line the bag with that. It is durable but pliable plus wears well. Love you videos, they are always interesting.

You may also be able to use fusible batting but then you'd need a lining...
Yes I’m fine with that, I like a nice lining in a bag, so I think both batting and lining is needed here!! Thanks.
