Helmet. The band who taught me that you dont need to look flashy on stage to still rock hard.
That bass tone is unbelievable!
He plays low, between the pickups and bridge, as opposed to just playing over the pickups.
This band will always be heavier than yours.
This video is incredible.
Saw Godflesh last week, Helmet in Sept 😊Though my absolute faves are Godflesh and the mighty Killing Joke both since their beginning, I always fucking loved Helmet. Killing Joke four times. All heavier than all this ridiculous Heavy Metal fuckery
Charlotte Krasny I take it you don’t like Crowbar? Be a bit more open minded
So heavier than Nirvana & Rage Against The Machine? Hahaha jks Helmet are hardcore and heavy to the bone... Meantime is an awesome album from start to finish... absolute classic!
1994, a great year to be alive.
That year I was introduced to Helmet via The Crow OST and have been a huge fan since 🤘
Page is a genius. Stanier is a god.
@@jordanwilliams953 Bogdan is a great bassist and all around musician. Yes, can't forget.
There is not any current bands out here that comes close to Helmet. Helmet still rocks and rules.
Check out Whores - Ruiner EP. They're also on AmRep. Much better than new Helmet!
The most clean cut yet so heavy way back then
that bassline has a fantastic texture to it, sounds fantastic, never heard before in my life!?! how!?!?
He plays low, between the pickups and bridge, as opposed to just playing over the pickups.
This band totally fits for my taste in music and appearance.
that snare and bass tone never gets old.
Such a raw badass band that hasnt changed with trends. I saw Helmet open for Filter a few years ago. Helmet mopped the floor with them. I left during Filter's set.
i don't say it often but i truly believe the reason helmet gets such hate is because people can't deal with a band that has such good technical skills and such a perfectly tight sound
@@erickh82082 yeah, but Stanier has that extra something. Like when AC/DC replaced Rudd. Wasn't quite the same.
gratefulape12 he had the helmet groove that not every replacement can have or know
It's a JC Penney T-shirt Khaki-Math Rock Thing, only Helmet fans understand.
Only helmet fans understand they hate the whole math rock thing...
I love how page never had to dress to impress. He’d just get up there and fucking rip
Saw them around 97-98 open for Marilyn Manson. Never was a big Manson fan but loved seeing Helmet.
That snare tone though....
@@jasonmgomez
Exactly. Hard tone to achieve. Theyre all either too pop..or too flat. This snare is PER FECT.
Drums sound great! Helmet is amazing!
Helmet always pushes the amp air so good....fun shit to play guitar too...hella power!!!!
Still rocking to Helmet in 2021
Flawless performance! Better than the album version.
Stanier live is like watching a fucking steam locomotive perform up a steep grade dragging all loaded coal cars
Henry's bass driving the whole line
Henry's tone is killer! Always wanted a G&L bass because of the tone
I remember asking Henry face to face in 97 how he got his tone, he just took a drag of his cigarette and smiled at me.
Fuck that! Pick as low as possible as hard as possible then tone chase and boom!
Helmet rescued me from the jam band scene back in 1994. They've been my soundtrack for life ever since.
Absolutely love that guitar page has. Always been interested in ESP. I had the Steph Carpenter sig, but the pickup layout it’s just weird and I like either the reverse headstock or the 3 + 3 style Horizon. I still scour the internet every now and again looking for a LTD version of Pages sig
saw them last weekend on the 20th anniversary Betty tour. Fantastic show. Over 2 hours and loud as hell!
Fast forward to 3 years later and they're doing a 30th anniversary tour. 30 cities. 30 song set list. No opening bands. I've got tickets to the Detroit show.
Drums are top notch and hard as nails !!!!!
One of my favorite all time bands. That line up is the best.
always wondered why Henry even bothered stringing the other 3 lol
That SNARE!!!!
Helmet has such a good bass tone
Iam very grateful that was a young 14 year old at this time
Interestingly enough..... there have been NO rip-off bands of Helmet. They are SO unique in their own way. In my "humble" opinion.....a lot of the "unique-ness" has to do with that Drummer.... He just know when to play and where. My...how I wish more Drummers would take a page out of his playbook. Definitely an original. Unmatched in every way......
I was lucky enough to catch these guys at a cool little bar in lyttelton just out of Christchurch in New Zealand a few months ago on a Tuesday night. The gig was awesome but the highlight was finding ourselves as the last men(and women) standing and literally sitting on their stage talking shit with the band. They were the most down to earth and accessible people ever. I even shook Mr Hamilton down for a guitar pick which he didn't have on him but shot out the back and rummaged through their shit to find me one. Class act. In the end it was myself and my mates that had to say "oh well, guess we should fuck off". Great night. Probably the best/most memorable gig I've been too. 👍
Seeing Helmet and Quicksand at the Metro in Chicago in 1992 was jaw-dropping. I had only heard Meantime on CD and then out walk these tennis pros, PH with a magenta ESP Mirage. I'm like... tf? These are metal guys? And then they just absolutely slaughtered.
You ever get into a band called Handsome? It was members of Helmet and Quicksand that made an album. Fucking amazing.
@@rworrick8037 Into? I even have the vinyl :) And yeah, for the Helmet and Quicksand aficionado, it's an awesome find - especially with Terry Date producing.
@@judsonsnell I was extremely lucky enough to seen them in '97 opening for Local H and Silverchair on the Freakshow tour. Absolutely fell in love with them and was an instafan. Too bad they only had the one record, but even still I listen to it this day. Wasn't lucky enough to grab the vinyl but my cd still gets a lot of play. Good times.
This is Very heavy sound, rytm gitar and bass is so cool sound and the drummer is Very good.
I wish this line up was still intact
That solo fucking rips, so goddamn stellar
page always has the best gear set up. when I play heavy music (depending on which band I was fronting at the time) I also got a lot out of esp. I also found (surprisingly) that my rickenbacker. 360 had a killer heavy sound coupled with a pedal and my mesa stack
Just the name of the band is fucking cool. Helmet.
I seen helmet it was one of the best shows I've ever been to
Henry Bogdan, ladies and gentlman.
They look more like white guys on a college basketball team than in a rock band.
I LOVE HELMET !!!!!!!!!!!
Stanier made this band.
***** I realize Page made/started the band... they just don't sound the same with Stanier.
sam brubaker Exactly! His beats and off tempo drumming at times but still rhythmic and the bass carrying the low end just complimented well with Hamilton's guitar style. Isn't there drummer now more metal based drumming? If i were Page i would of tried to get Brain to drum for Helmet, his style is closer to Stanier.
Bogdan was great, too. Super solid rhythm section. Stanier drums for Tomahawk, which is one of Mike Patton's many side bands with Duane Denison from the Jesus Lizard and one of the bass players from the Melvins. They're kind of an experimental rock band. He also is the drummer for Battles, which is a sort of sample heavy electronic rock band, and he really lays down some cool hard hitting beats that really is great for live shows. I'm not typically a fan of that sort of music, but his drumming, especially live really makes it appealing. He also DJ's now in his free time from those bands, oddly enough. I think I read somewhere that Bogdan completely quit rock and electric instruments altogether after Helmet and now plays Hawaiian lapsteel in some New York symphony or orchestra.
Josh Freese is about the only drummer I would consider for Helmet. He has a unique style as well, but I agree, Stainer was an awesome fit.
Shame they couldn't have stayed together.
I love Stainer style, but I have no idea what you call it when asked. I call it a hard jazz break beat style and confuse the fuck out of everyone.
I ay guitar, so my drum terms are limited. I actually look up to drummers more than guitarists. I think it's envy.
@@liberty5565 Mac McNeilly from Jesus Lizard would have fit. Slightly more jazzy/looser feel, but still a heavy hitter and tight as a drum
I agree with Jorge. I love Helmet no matter who's playing, but the early incarnation seemed to be really into a sonic type sound. A little more art-rock than NYC industrial back then.
So obvious how hard they inspired the deftones.
Kinda funny how they inspired bands that got more recognition than them though lol
Ha, I keep hearing Bad Brains in the Deftones but you're right. Helmet is there too.
bass tone killer...bass volume overkiller
These days. It’s only the singer who goes on with helmet. And for a man who’s 60. He can still go!
Best show I ever seen nothing to compare 2 , 1990 cats cradle chapel hill ! I was 16 , strap it on tour!
Li amo! Visti dal vivo a Roma 1994
They really sound amazing here... are there any more videos from this show?!
I love you Page and the current Helmet too.
Nobody can beat Helmet and Quicksand.
o.o how did i take so long to find this amazing
A Masterpiece
Sonically beautiful.
R.I.P. Helmet April 20th 2025.
i'm pretty sure these boys will become big one day...
The original lineup from the album Betty should reunite this year. Bodgan and Stainer were the best in the rhytmics. Despite the current bass player using a G&L Bass the tone is just not there tho.
That snare 🥴
Holy shiiit!!! Fucking awesome!!! Are you fucking kidding me???
You're welcome, Deftones.
@@anthonyyoung5782 ease up super fan, nobody is besmirching your asshelmet.
These guys really grunge it up here
Ryan Morrison I listen to Helmet everyday and never get tired of them. I Still love Helmet with the current lineup of band members too.
I can picture that teacher from Back to the Future with his hands over his ears.
Amazing.
2nd classic line up live Tic YEEEEESSSS!!!!!!!
Los verdaderos creadores del ñu metal....yeeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The band is not as good without Stanier but I still love em.
right now as far as esp I'm liking the esp viper (shaped much like an SG) and they make a baritone viper I hear that I'd like to check out
AWESOME DUDE
Best gig helmet live 🤘
thanks
IT BEGINS!
COISA MAIS LINDA!!!!
Kickass!
Get John & Henry back for one show.
I only aspire to be as cool as these guys
I'm a big fan of Helmet and love Meantime and Betty mainly - killer riffs, beats (Staniers one of my fave drummers) and sonics. I must admit though I could always take or leave Hamiltons vocals, in this one he's channeling Cookie Monster for sure lol
Brent Strathdee-Pehi I am a Black American Woman that loves hardcore Rock and Metal music too. I am obsessed with Helmet period . I love the new album out that Helmet has out called Dead To The World.
Tosh.Helmet
Kind of reminds me of Sonne from Ramstein.
