The biggest problem is that Steven Universe feel likes two different shows. One is some mostly meh Beach City slice-of-life thing and the other is a pretty cool sci-fi story with tons of potential.
However, I think the new batch of episodes are trying to fix this problem.

Shugur had 6 seasons and a movie. Most shows don't even get that far. But so much time was wasted
Personally, I think SU's biggest flaw is that instead of having the slice of life episodes sprinkled throughout, the plot seems to go from 0 to 60 and then slams on it's breaks and goes nowhere for a little while, only to pick back up at a random moment and rush into a new plotline. Season 5 was the worst to me: the plot that opened the season hooked me and I loved it. When Steven came back and Connie was angry at him I thought it was reasonable and was interested to see where it would go, but then it was stretched over an entire steven bomb. By the end it made Connie seem uncharacteristically immature, wrapped up way too quickly for how long it lasted, and left me wondering about the main plot. What about Lars? What about the Diamonds? What's going on back on Homeworld? And why do none of the characters seem at all concerned by these questions???
Gemcation frustrated me the most. “I don’t care about Homeworld anymore!” - Steven
did same thing with adventure time, long development times with crucial plot developments and character arcs, then you have literally an ENTIRE YEAR without resolving it or even returning to said storyline. How is that supposed to get you invested in the show ?
Zero world building
Same, I just cant believe how everyone is chill about a normal human being in space, and how Steven created a portal that is basically faster that any other travel method known and the Crystal Gems are like, k cool
Aaron Buffalo well with adventure it took a while but everything was wrapped up nicely in the end
My biggest problems with the show as of now are: 1) The Gems get way too sidelined. When was the last time Pearl or Garnet got the spotlight of an episode? 2) The adventure, fantasy and magic feeling from first two seasons is mostly gone. 3) We get TOO MANY townie episodes, if you gonna give us that, then at least use other characters than Onion or Ronaldo...or try pairing townie with gems stuff.

I do believe that pairing Townies and Gems is a good idea. Me and my friend had an idea to make a fan episode that takes place in the beginning of season 2, after Beach City rebuilt itself. Mayor Dewey and the rest of Beach City want to thank the gems for saving their asses. This could lead to character development, good dialouge, and maybe even some good jokes. Unfortunately, this will never happen because me and her haven't seen each other in months and I don't know how to animate.
The newest season fixes all these issues!

One thing that I think season 5 has vastly improved from 2-4 is that the Beach City townies no longer feel completely disconnected from the main plot. I feel like that fact was what gave them a bum rap in the first place tbh.
Toon4Thought dewey wins was super frustrating with Steven defending Dewey and I don't really like that they resolved the Connie issue in that way. But raising the barn was pretty great

Toon4Thought when Connie steals lion, they mention Lars once or twice and basically forget he’s stuck with a couple of gems running for their lives, Steven decides this is a great time to help with an election, check his phone constantly instead of going over and talking with Connie, visiting Lapis and peridot, gardening, band practice, and going to a party to talk to the one person who he’s been too much of a pansy to talk to. My boyfriend and I are getting increasingly annoyed with these beach city episodes because they do nothing to further the plot and in fact hinder the more important conflict of the show and that being with the diamonds and Lars on homeworld. Steven cares more about Connie’s feelings than he does Lars wellbeing, the fact that the diamonds placed on a huge target on his back now that they know what he looks like, as well as how did pink diamond get shattered? So many plot threads are tied once and never picked up again...
She didn't steal Lion though. Lion left because of Steven acting selfish and just stayed with Connie to comfort her most likely. Lion just comes and goes as he wants anyway.

I'm think my biggest issue with Steven Universe is probably the fact that they keep raising the stakes only to drop them again.
Oh the earth might explode because of a messed up experiment? Solves it, Oh Jasper, the biggest conflict in the series? Ends it, Oh, they finally deal with the fucked up nature of homeworld? What is Steven going to do now? Immediately solves the problem.
Please let these things LINGER longer! The team gets rid of interesting threats WAY to quick.

YES THIS! I was looking forward to the stakes they keep rising, but it gets SOLVED way too quickly and leaves it rather anti-climatic. Like I was thinking something big was going to happen with the 'mess up experiment'.. but then its quickly dropped or solved in a 'PG friendly' way

I agree with this but the Jasper conflict was handled the best way they could tbh. It had an entire arc and a two episode battle about it.
This show's biggest problem, is that sometimes it seems like the story drags on way too long. I mean, did we really need six episodes just so Steven and Connie could make up? That could have been resolved in three episodes.

That's where I'm gonna have to disagree. The Steven and Connie conflict definitely needed some time. After all, it has been 2 FREAKING YEARS since their relationship has gotten the spotlight (the last time being Steven's Birthday). Although I do agree that some plot lines drag on too long, the Steven and Connie conflict was just a bad example.
@Pixe Prozl, a bad example how? I don't have a problem with Connie being upset at Steven. But, they dragged it out way too long. It could have been resolved in two to three episodes. The conflict is even more underwhelming, when you find out that Connie did try to contact Steven, but he was on vacation, so again, it could have been resolved much earlier. It was just a waste.
It was drug out just to keep Lion away for a few months, and yes a few months passed, so LARS OF THE STARS or whatever can happen off screen. And in no episode until the last do we see any signs of STeven caring about Lars or Lion at all. Just Connie. That's not the STeven of other episodes, that whole batch is just bad. There's a few fun moments with Sadies song or Kevin but on the whole it's just bad and inexcusable. THey should know how to write by now. They messed around in Season 1 and are still messing around in season 4 instead of keeping more consistency.

i don't hate steven universe, not completely. the problem is the hiatuses. they toke 7 FUCKING MONTHS just to air 5 episodes. When Gravity Falls did it they had better reason i think. i think the real problem was the episodes they followed up the Wanted arc. and starting the, "connie hates me"arc and not talking about what happened on homeworld, which is much more interesting than those relationship problems that could be solved by talking and understanding and pretending everything is fine

I completely forgot that Steven Universe was back because the plot caved in on itself by the end of season 4. This show has way too many things going on in it (we have to set up the Diamonds' connection to Pink, we have to set up Lars getting stranded on Homeworld, we have to set up the townspeople, we have to set up how WD plays into all this...we have to set up...) and it's just become a chore to sit through now.
I don't need a checklist to watch a show or keep up with the plot. Hell, we still don't know two shits about Pearl!

In one of the recent episodes Pearl almost reveals something but is cut of by the fucking GEMS. Like can we just fucking get SOMETHINg.

I don’t think it’s the animation. I think the big problem is the wildly inconsistent pacing. Especially with the thrusting flipflop back and forth between townies and the gem story. They should take abit more time to make the transition more natural and consistent. But not to much as to make the show a slog , but keep things from feeling like a chaotic, ever shifting whirlwind

I hate what they are doing with Steven's sacrifice, though. I knew he was going to sacrifice himself at some point, it is in his character. It could have been a great allegory to understand sacrifice, selflessness, and that we have to face some things alone. But instead they make Connie hurt, even though he saved her life, and are telling the audience it was the wrong thing to do. I see people say stuff like, He was being selfish and not thinking about the people who love him. People, it happens everyday. A fact of life. People risk their lives to protect their country and their loved ones. Parents give up their dreams to be parents to their children. Steven did what had to be done. More than anything they should be owing their lives to him and be ready to stand by him in the coming war.
To resolve Steven and Connie's falling out, he has to take all blame and say he was wrong EVEN THOUGH HE SAVED NOT JUST HER BUT OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES. Being in relationships, I know that this is a horrible thing to teach, especially to kids and young adults. In real life, that is an unhealthy thing to do in a relationship.
Finally someone who thinks the same
Aside from its beginning, Season 5 has disappointed me. While I can appreciate it tying together character arcs with filler episodes, the episodes still feel like padding, and to top it off they feel pretty shallow. The episode were Lapis leaves felt so void of personality and stakes since the episode itself treated the plot as just one of those things that happens. It could have focused more on the conflict between Lapis and Peridot to create a dramatic episode, but instead has everyone looking for a pumpkin while acting totally chill about leaving forever.
I can appreciate Sadies episode more as it actually develops her and changes her dynamic to everyone else, kinda like The Good Lars did but without her becoming a central character to the plot. Gemcation in general however kind of felt like a constant cock tease, we knew Steven was on shaky ground and upset about Connie, but in general the episode just didnt push the plot forward, and just hinted at new things without telling us about them, and suggested the plot might get resolved. Dewey Wins was the same. And to cap it off, the latest episode with Kevin just felt like it was messing with the characters. Connies reason for not talking to Steven was pretty stupid, Steven was so naive he felt like he had regressed in character development back to season 1, and Kevin was hinter at being developed but just became the punching bag instead.
It looks like this series is trying to improve its structure but is sacrificing the quality writing from old.
I agree with all of this beside what you said about Kevin Party. I found the writing in that episode pretty good, along with the reunion of Steven and Connie. Although, that may just be my bias speaking. I was just really happy that Kevin Party brought Steven and Connie's mutual crush to light for the first time since Steven's Birthday through use of blushing, flirting, etc.
And for Connie not responding to Steven was so stupid!!! She had not time? What about calling steven, or texting him back that they need to deal with it face to face.

What is wrong with this fandom and calling some episodes filler....this is not an anime or a marvel/DC movie....filler is when you put in a random episodes so your comic or manga can get ahead and not lack behind the show
Steven universe doesn't have fillers cause it doesn't come on weekly so it's no point in calling it filler if they have months to prepare for episodes
+Beserker X When I say "Filler" I mean episodes that basically have no impact on the plot, arent as good as the core plot episodes, and do nothing but pad out the shows lifetime with characters way less interesting than the main cast, and plots that shatter any sense of pacing the show had created. Unfortunately there isnt really any other name you can give this, if there is feel free to tell me, but as of now the easiest thing to call it is filler.
And its not necessarily impossible for the show to have filler episodes that are filler, the crew could simply produce quick episodes with the Beach city cast to concentrate on their over arching plot which is suspiciously spaced out with what we call "filler". So yes, it could very well meet that description in a different way, and it has an abundance of it.
In case youre one of the fans who defend the "Filler to the death, heres some points to consider that might give you an insight into why me and so many other dont like it.
-- It takes away from the actual interesting parts of the plot, the gem related stuff, and instead decides to give us meaningless slice of life episodes that over all are just shallow and uninteresting. Its rare for a Filler episode to be as love as a plot driven episode, and i can tell you for a fact no one enjoyed Dewey wins as much as The Trial.
-- While its probably meant to improve the pacing by giving time to relax after an intense episode, the Hiatuses already fill this void, making them extra pointless. On top of that there is then an overabundance of filler, making up the majority of the show, making it feel even more pointless than it already did.
-- It never ties into the actual plot like it easily could. Season 5 basically proved to us that the Beach City character Arcs could be nicelt woven into the plot with Lars, which just makes each stupid character arc we had before feel extra pointless, especially since half didnt even change their dynamics in beach City. Things like Saide quitting and Dewey stepping down are a good start, but they still feel so shallow since all these changes are coming five seasons in.
Sorry for the wall of text but thats basically the brief outline of why Steven Universe has such a bit filler problem, and saying "Its not filler" isnt really adding to the conversation, just moving away from it.
Personally, I don't think they were acting chill about leaving forever. And, from personal experience, I can relate to Peridot here. She wants to tell Lapis, but she can't because she's too afraid of making her upset, which apparently is so terrifying to her that she lies to Lapis almost every time something serious is happening. This shows me that for Peridot to be that afraid of upsetting Lapis, it must not be a good thing when she gets upset, which is totally understandable knowing how OP her water powers are. They were just showing that they needed something else to distract them from leaving so Steven could talk to her and let her know that she can stand up for herself and make her own decisions. And I thought it was hilarious that when she finally did and Lapis still said she was leaving, Peridot said "Wait! You're supposed to reward me for my emotional honesty!" (Whoever writes Peridot's lines is amazing btw) I think they handled it very well, and Lapis leaving was nice send off.
I really, really, REALLY wish there was a regular airing of Steven Universe episodes. The episodes that don't contribute to the advancement of the plot would have been fine if we had a new episode every week to keep the story going, but we gotta wait months before seeing anything, which makes everything move at a snail's pace. I don't care about Sadie quitting her job, I want to know who shattered Pink Diamond!!!!!

i just want this show to be over. Lemme see what's up with all the diamonds, whats the truth around rose quartz, what's pearls back story, a timeline of the gem war, save the earth. Then end it just...im tired of it, its flaws are beginning to overshadow what I like about it
What has been bugging me about Steven Universe since Jasper disappearing is that the show has no sense of urgency when it need to be there. This last bomb is a great example of what I mean. I mean yeah they can still have the plot line with Connie being upset with Steven but it did not need to take five episodes to do it. We don't need to know or care about what Mayor Dewy is doing or the parts with the cool kids. Now is when they should start figuring out what needs to be done about Lars.
Yah we really didn't need 6 episodes that deal with Connie being mad at Steven, which basically chalks up to Connie getting a haircut like they broke up. It really wasn't what I had in mind after 6 months of waiting. I mean yah the Diamonds think Steven is still on Homeworld but how long is that going to last before she finds out Lars is a portal there. How about the long build up of the Diamonds. Are we still going to have episodes ignoring that the Diamonds can come at any time before the show gets canceled (if it does before it actually is revealed or if they are planning to reveal it)? The closest we got was that Pearl scene in Gemcation and that small reference to Lar's parents crying because their son is missing/still in space. If they want characters to develop than why do it now when you know people are going to be disappointed that they waited 6 months for that when they were expecting something like the preview they showed at ComicCon (was it comiccon? I don't remember).

I've lost faith in SU, yet I still keep up with the show... I have no idea why. I suppose I see the potential in it and hope it'll get better, but each season there's at least one episode that leaves me very disappointed.

Daniel Crecca Exactly! It's never ending. It's why I dislike shows like The Walking Dead or Supernatural or Doctor Who. There's no end in sight and there's not enough to keep me interested.
Same here! I feel like I mostly watch the show out of habit at this point, I no longer feel hyped when new episodes are announced. The idea of the show coming back used to make me so excited I could literally feel my heart pounding in my chest! Nowadays I feel like: "Oh, new eps? Alright then, let's see if they manage to make me feel something outside disappointment."
The show tries so hard to be complex that it adds unecessary plots (like teasing us with the possibility that maybe Rose didn't shatter Pink Diamond, for example) and doesn't touch them until a season later, and it is so fucking annoying.
I really liked Back To The Kindergarten, it was a fun and wholesome filler episode! (In my head, filler =/= boring episode) The only thing I dislike about it is that it was aired specifically with the other 5 episodes that were released on the App. It irks me so much that Lars is in constant danger and Steven doesn't do shit to help! Lion dissappeared on the first episode of the bomb and Steven doesn't try to find him until the last ep of said bomb! He truly doesn't care and he was the one who got him into all this mess to begin with!

I actually missed Doug out and I was so surprised and confused when you mentioned it, I had to go see what I missed and now I know why episode 22 felt so sudden. But I’m kind of supporting your point, you could miss this and miss really nothing
I want to love Steven Universe but right now it's really hard to. The release schedule is probably the worst release schedule I've ever seen. And the plot of every episode is just:
-There is a problem
-Steven tries to solve it, but fails
-Steven learns something
-Steven solves the problem
I have to admit I'm forgetting details, but, after the episode when the Rubies took the Crystal Gems to the Moonbase as prisoners, and Eyeball says she saw Rose shatter Pink with her own eh...eye, Steven looks in disbelief and the Crystal Gems appear to know something they never told Steven. Pearl even shakes as if she's really trying to hold back some emotions. I know later Steven gets sucked out the airlock, but did they ever go back to that moment after he made it back home? How often do the Crystal Gems sit down and tell Steven things that he should know? He has Roses Sword, he found Bismuth (who they forgot about and never mentioned again if I recall correctly) and he has his shield and bubble and has been in countless fights. Do they still think they need to keep secrets from him because he's a kid? Does he never go "Hey... why did Jasper say Pink Diamond was her diamond?"
It feels like with each reveal, the shattering of Pink Diamond, who is really on who's side, and the Gem war, they don't want to go too far with the plot and put focus on characters that, while they can be entertaining, I think we can say no one really cares about. I imagine when the show is finally concluded, people will make lists of episodes that basically tell the story and list episodes that have little to no impact and are worth skipping. Keep in mind, I don't hate the show, but I feel they need to put the foot on the gas and get the galactic gem war plot rolling again.
The problem with SU is that exactly 10 of their episodes are actually good. The show hasn't gone downhill, it's just simply gone nowhere at all given how long its been airing. I felt way more satisfied watching half a season of Star Butterfly than I have 3 seasons of SU. Not saying SU doesn't have good episodes in it, but come on, time is valuable and should be treated as such by the show's episode lineup.
Plus, the creators give me the creeps, but that's a subjective matter.

Yeah, SU's problem is that (apparently) it has too many writers with different ideas of what an episode should be like (actually a common problem with many cartoons.) Also if there's something Season 5 confirmed for me is that I do NOT care about the normal Beach City citizens- they're boring at best and annoying at worst. I just couldn't wait for more Gem-centric episodes to come!
Honestly I was fine with Ronaldo in every episode except Rocknaldo.

Seen the latest episodes. They're ok, but they aren't that good. The episodes are just seemingly going no where. There's a lot of episodes that are focusing way too much on Slice of life and reducing action , and what would be considered, taking way too long on getting to any where near the main plot. If there is one to be seen that is. I started watching the show because of the potential it had on becoming a good or possibly great show. It started to pick up momentum when jail break came around, but afterwards there's a constant sacrifice of main plot content, in favor of episodes that don't really contribute to the main plot at all, of which in of its self is very unclear at this point. There's the diamonds and home world of course, but they've only been said to just be a threat with hardly any insight as to why or what has made home world and the diamonds a threat at all (And yes I am fully aware of the civil war that went on, but that was hardly touched on as well, all we got were vague answers of it). By now Steven Universe probably would fair well if it was an online project, of which there it would probably do better than it already is, but idk if it would have regardless. Shows similar to it such as Bravest Warriors from Frederator do take time to make the content, but usually the wait is worth it, but with Steven Universe, we've been getting episodes that wouldn't be considered worth all the time waiting on.

I understand where your coming from but these episodes are really important and in my opinion make the interest for beach city much higher. The beach city episodes were stale and so were the characters but these changes to the status quo are huge for the characters. Dewy losing the role of mayor and forced to find a new job, how Sadie interacts with her band and coping with Lars, the pizza twins' mom (can't spell her name) taking over as mayor. What these characters needed was change and how they all act after the homeworld invasion was the change that was needed. I want to see what happens with Dewy, I want to see how beach city changes with a new mayor, I want to see more of the cool kids and Sadie (though mostly because I love their characters). Even kevin is more interesting to me now and I want to know if he'll have a character arc. This show was never meant to be just gem stuff, it has a slice of life aspect to it. People watch for both sides of the coin (action/slice of life) so if you don't like slice of life then just watch the gem stuff. I know that means waiting but if you really watch this show or for action than you need to find a different show. I don't understand why action fans even watch this SU. There's more slice of life than action and a lot of the fight scenes are good but nothing special. You question why homeworld is dangerous well we've seen why multiple times. Their technology is much stronger (gem destabilizers, aqua marine's wand, space ships) and they have a clear numbers advantage. We don't know much about the diamonds but yellow diamond can pint towards someone and poof them. Not to mention the ability to corrupt gems.
As for the false advertising the comic con stuff was for the official TV release in winter, not the early fall stuff. And some of the stuff in the trailer were in these episodes. We just (like usual) have to be patient.
The show has its share of issues but I don't think this or it's recent episodes are the underlying problem with the show.

I think games The hardest well again this was really just a sneak peak and didn't reflect the full trailer. I'm pretty sure he next episode is Lars of the stars as Connie and lion are back with Steven. And if this show started as a plot driven super serious show I would agree with you but that's not how the show started. The fact is the beach city stuff has and always will be a major aspect of SU and as such changing its formula is big for the show. I understand what you mean by some episodes going nowhere, I hated some of the beach city episodes as well and how they interrupted the cool gem stuff but these episodes felt well placed for me. I wanted to know how beach city reacted to the invasion because they usually sweep gem stuff under the rug. I love Connie and Steven's interactions and wanted to see this conflict was handled. I mean what do you want Steven to do now? He can't go back to homeworld because he can't do anything there. As for the stuff with pearl I see it as we're getting more development for her soon. Now that homeworld and the diamonds are major aspect of the show now pearl will hopefully get a full episode to explain herself rather than the last 2 minutes of an episode. Again it's annoying but we just have to be patient.

And the way how Connie is upset because Steven left for Homeworld is just cheap drama to delay their mission to Homeworld. They couldn’t find an alternative to save Lars on a different galaxy, yet they blame it on the Mayor.
What CAN the mayor do? Even if that skanky grandma took over mayor dewie, what can she and beach city citizens do to fix it?
They should put the finger on Steven and the gems, to build pressure and feel the urge to save Lars. Couldn’t Steven go to Homeworld instantly after coming back to earth knowing that his friend is probably gonna get killed by alien rocks?
The crewniverse is just pretentious at this point. The comicon didn’t depict the actual episodes, and delayed the tension. The waiting time isn’t worth the fillers.
Star Vs The Forces of Evil were able to fill the series with filler (good ones btw compared to SU) and still manages to keep the plot growing. And the hiatus isn’t as long as SU. I am still salty about this.
I thought that "My Dad" bit was amazing. Like Abbott and Costello, but really profound. You'd think Steven's innocent conversation with Peridot was just a one-off list, but it had such far reaching repercussions.
I think you misunderstood Lion 4. It sort of goes with Storm in the Room because Steven is trying to understand his mom's actions and his own purpose. Perhaps my interpretation is wrong, but I always thought the reason for him to end up in Rose's trash dump was because he realized (or thought) that he was just going to have to clean up after Rose's mess (her involvement in PD's shattering, the rebellion, etc.)
He was expecting a magical destiny, but all he got was the mess he had to clean up. This is what eventually led to his actions at the finale of Season 4, which had a huge impact on the show. So no, Lion 4 is not meaningless.
I'm a huge faggot It was another soul searching, purpose finding episode, which the concept has been done before many times. Any how, it didn't really do anything to progress the show any further. It's much like so many episodes that have come out lately. Little to do with anything seemingly related to the plot, of which at this point is unclear. We know the diamonds and home world are a threat, but all we have to go on is that they just are. We haven't seen them do anything wrong, and the whole gem war has been barely touched on, and all we have to go on is just vague statements that either garnet or pearl make on it.
It totally progressed the show further. It set up Steven's idea about what he needs to do to fix everything that Rose messed up, which was a huge part of why he sacrificed himself in I am My Mom.
I understood what the purpose of Lion 4 was. It all fits in well with the other episodes about Steven trying to sort out his purpose and feelings with Rose.
I just don't think that the conclusion that was reached in Lion 4 was worthy of something that the whole episode built up to, whether it fit the message or not.

One of my biggest problems with the series is that Gems are exactly the same as humans in every way except for their physical abilities and longevity. It really annoys me in stories when immortal characters behave in generally the same way as regular humans and progress as characters in generally the same way, but that I can usually look past because whatever. What really annoys me is how, conceptually, gems are very different from humans and their class system is based on actual, purposeful differences in types of gems, yet they fall in love, pretty easily disobey authority, and just about everything else humans do. The two times when this became very blatant to me were when Peridot insulted Yellow Diamond and in the Trial when the justice system seemed to be just like any regular justice system. The many instances of the Gems not understanding Earth things despite having been on Earth for thousands of years sure didn't help. I would have liked it if the show highlighted the serious differences between Gems and humans. What if because each class of Gem was made for a particular purpose, the Crystal Gems were actually "defective" and their desire for individuality and freedom was "wrong" and would ruin the functionality of Gem society if they all thought that way? What if the Crystal Gems were, in the context of Homeworld, threatening, and not just because the Diamonds said so? I wouldn't necessarily need it to go that far, but something that distinguished Homeworld from some technologically advanced dictatorship.

Aside from blue diamond's appearance, "That Will be All", and the last 2 episodes of the season, S4 is by far the most underwhelming season by far. It's sad because season 3 ended amazingly and the beginning of season 5 was epic. However I'm concerned that season 5 will be heading down the same path as S4, the whole Connie and Steven argument seemed like it lasted way longer than it should had.
Seasons 3 and 2 were the best in the entire series imo
Eh, the way I see it, this season still beats Season 1. That season was too boring for me, with not many memorable episodes. This season has inconsistent quality, sure, but I got a lot of enjoyment out of it as a whole. Also, my least favorite episode still comes from Season 1 (Onion Trade), so there’s that.

idk I can think of a ton of memorable episodes. Giant Woman, Lars and the cool kids, Steven the sword fighter, Coach Steven, Monster Buddies, an indirect kiss, mirror and ocean gem, space race, Lion 2 and 3, Warp tour, alone together, the test, on the run, winter forecast, marble madness, rose's scabbard, and the season finale 2 parter that is still the best in my opinion. Season 1 was really good. But it might just be since it was the longest season.

If Steven Universe are to every have a movie/hour long episode. I think it should take place solely inside Rose's room with nothing but Steven and his imagination and possible secrets and story building all from within this cloudy setting. Where the mood quickly changes and go from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. It would require great and passionate writing and most importantly (to me) the music. If they constantly have Incredible soundtracks playing then I'll be hooked 100%. Music is a perfect way to access my emotions. There's no filler episodes but there are slice of life episodes which have character development and if you check the meaning of filler it means an absense of plot progression and or character development. So Steven universe doesnt have filler. You're just more interested in the gems more then the humans. Steven being half human half gem we are supposed to see both of his lives.
Having character development is fine but nobody wants to watch Lars become a bit less of a jerk for the fourth time. If the episodes were 50/50 wacky gem adventures and peaceful town adventures it would be fine but it's not.

SU can never be truly "lost", because unlike in most shows (or fanfictions for that matter) Rebecca Sugar had plotted out the main points long ago, including an ending. That being said, getting to that crucial phase has proven difficult, and it's clear to me that in season 4 several members of the Crewniverse had lost their zeal, or decided to take the show and its characters down paths that were contrary to the creator's vision.
The concluding episodes of s4 and the first of s5 contained stories that were as good as any from the glory days, but of the current batch only Kevin Party rose above mediocrity, while depression and futility seemed to suffocate the characters.
The newer episodes have ruined the show for me.
After the trial and all that stuff, Lars was just left at home word. Steven doesn't care at all about getting him back, even though Sadie and Lars' parents were really sad. He decided to focus on getting Dewey elected rather than paying attention to Lars' parents who were literally in tears.
We haven't even seen what is going on with Lars. Maybe if the show gave us an episode where Steven goes to Lars for an entire day and just hangs out, but for all we know, Lars has just been doing absolutely nothing this whole time.
This isn't even the first time that this has happened. Earlier in season 4, during the rocknaldo episodes area, they were basically just chilling around the town even though they were wanted home world criminals with known locations. The show could have used this as an opportunity to completely change the show. The gems could have either spent a few episodes working towards getting to home world, or moved to either a different planet or a different city to hide out.
But instead they did absolutely nothing while home world could have attacked at any moment.
I don't know what segment of the population are into fillery stuff as much as I am, but I really appreciate all of the fillery stuff in a work of fiction. The thing about it is that you don't know it's actual level of relevance until the very end of the run of the show.
I feel like when everything is important and grand in a show, you run into escalation issues where the show has nowhere to go because it continues to outdo itself. Having fillery chunks that don't have clear purpose at the time it is presented allow for new things to be introduced slowly without having to be the biggest threat the characters have faced all at once.
Execution is a big part of it too. I am partial towards the execution that the SU team has taken towards most of its filler. The Ronaldo episodes being the biggest exception. I do see what they are trying to do with those episodes, but I dislike the execution.
I didn't use to like fillery stuff at all while growing up, but I have come to, not only see it as vital for pacing and world building (at least when done correctly), but to actively enjoy it whenever presented. I have come across other people who feel the same way, but are not usually vocal about it, so I felt compelled to have that voice represented.
So, I can see why someone might hate fillery stuff (and not even 10 years back I would have been right there hating it with you) but there are people out there who really enjoy it.
I have lost interest in the series because it doesn't want yo move forward already after 4 years. Only half a season is really story driven while the rest is fan service to less interesting characters.
I get how they are trying to create this Universe but it feels very stretched to the point where you know the buildup is only in your head and the chances of the perfect resolution you imagine are close to zero.
Yah it's really disappointing. I've become close to just dropping it but I've watched it too long not to see the ending/what's been promised to get revealed.
Everyone seems to dislike characters just because the are jerks. (Lars, Ronaldo) I have never had that problem. At all. If a character acts bad that is either just funny or interesting to me. Shows aren't real life. The creators made characters jerks for a reason, so i don't dislike them just because they are jerks. They aren't real. Also the whole Lars redemption arc became so much better just because of how he had acted previously.

the biggest flaws in the show for me is the art style changes and the lack of story progression. Also I am going to be really pissed if Rose didn't kill pink diamond because that will ruin one of Steven's character arcs, coming to terms with Rose's past.

I love the show, however they really need to get the schedule back on, I’m sick of getting see it first episodes, or Steven bombs, it takes the suspense and anticipation out of the show, that’s one of the best parts of TV shows you get so hyped each week, but it just doesn’t build on that. Also, lately there’s been too much filler. I understand they need time, but they’ve had a lot of time.
I just think they don't know what they want or aren't quite sure how a action based cartoon should go. :T
Either way, they need to make up their mind and/or look at what other cartoons do that have action and sci-fi in it.
Ugh sometimes I feel like the crew tries to head to one of their big 'stakes plot' by having the ol' Steven 'rushes into a new area, in hopes he can 'talk it out'.. and the talk no-jutsu gets very repetitive. It gives me mixed feelings whether he generally has baggage or somehow it appears when its plot relevant. Also I LOVE Aquamarine's evilness. I just want a SU villain who does NOT need a redemption arc, just so we can see they are 'just misunderstood inside' (it gets tiresome for me) why can't we just have mean villains who comes back to stir trouble?

I know that its a little late to be commenting about this, but I wanted to point out the purpose of the Rocknaldo episode.
The whole thing was a HUGE jab at the fandom for its biases and opinions, but to understand why they made it, you have to understand three things:
1) The crewniverse was getting MAJOR whiplash from the fandom about a multitude of aspects of the show. Earlier in the fandom, when they had the lapis/peridot redemption arcs and when Steven tried to redeem Jasper, the fandom kept on saying that Steven was being too forgiving. However, when the episode Here Comes a Thought came out and Stevonnie had a panic attack with jasper, bismuth, and rose, the fandom criticized the crewniverse saying that suddenly was so unforgiving and harsh and selfish. There was also great criticism of the art at the time too if i remember correctly, about everyone getting shorter, the inconsistent art style, and I think this was also around the time that one of the animators almost tried to commit suicide because the fans were harassing her for drawing amethyst thinner and claimed she was fataphobic but i could be wrong.
2) Ronaldo was a stand in for the actual fans of the show, in fact he always has been. He obsesses over the gems, makes up seemingly insane theories with what appears to be little evidence (i'm specifically referencing the end of the sneeple episode),and even makes a gemsonna and buys a weapon to match.
3) Steven within this context is an allegory for the crewniverse
The crewniverse decided to tell off the fans for being so critical by using Ronaldo, a character who has been used in the past to be symbolic of the fans. During the episode, Ronaldo criticizes Steven's actions, and his grounds for doing such (if i remember correctly, I haven't watched the episode since it aired) was that he was always there. Steven retaliated by saying that it was his life and that Ronaldo doesn't dictate what he does and that in the end, his opinion doesn't matter, because it is not his life.The episode begun with Ronaldo acting harmfully and rudely to Steven and the gems, but ended with him being more mindful and trying to better himself, which is what the crew wanted the fans to do.
The episode without context is, yes, bad. But within the context of the situation, it makes great sense to create such an episode. Honestly at the time it had been created, the fandom totally deserved the episode and the message it delivered.
TL;DR : the crew used Ronaldo as an allegory for the fans and Steven as an allegory for the crew in order to deliver the message, the fans are too critical of the crew's work as this is their story and their show, they are the ones who are putting hard work into the show and if you, the fan, don't like it, get out.
I hope that you don’t take such a black as white approach to everything else in life. Fans aren’t pointing these faults out to just whine but for the show to become consistent -they know it CAN be because the show has had its high points, low points, and high points again.
I understand that the fans point of view, but when they drive animators to suicide attempts, they need to step back and re-evaluate. Im not saying that the fans dont have a point either, my point was that they took things too far and so the creators wanted to make a counter point. This comment was posted mainly because in the video the creator said that they weren't sure if the crewniverse even had a point in making the episode, so I wanted to point out the episode's reason. The show is inconsistent and imperfect and people are free to judge it as they wish, but at the time the fandom took it way way too far. Often the shows inconsistency has just been a meme, but during this time, there was a lot of hate due to it. I felt that my tone was not accusing towards the fans, and I even pointed out that the episode without context is bad. I agree with the video in general and with your point as well, the show has been increasingly more inconsistent and I wouldn't be suprised if part of its inconsistancy has something to do with the network itself. Still, I see where I may have come across as irritated and biased and apologize for it, this is something im still personally working on and will continue to work on.

Okay apparently I got my facts mixed up with two horrible things the fandom has done. The first one is that animator Lauren Zuke quit the crewniverse after being constantly harassed for saying that she liked Lapidot, mostly by ammedot shippers. The second one was that Tumblr user and Steven universe fanart creator, Zamii070, attempted suicide after she made what others viewed as problematic ( I haven't seen all of the art personally and I don't know whether or not the art was problematic, the ones that I saw just seemed like issues in their art just due to being inexperienced? but an artist shouldn't be driven to suicide regardless, rather just informed). However I know that an animator (I cant remember/find their name for the life of me) came under fire for being supposedly fatphobic and animating amethyst as being thinner (again I don't really see it but that's what I was previously referring to).
Most of the fandom's drama has been on tumblr and/or twitter though so if you weren't on either during the drama, I wouldn't be surprised. Sorry about the misinformation though, I definitely should have fact checked myself there

One of the biggest problems with Steven Universe is that CN keeps putting out stupid ads saying "A BIG SECRET IS ABOUT TO BE REVEALED" only for them to crap out more slice of life episodes featuring townies I really don't care about. Plus, we barely see the Crystal Gems anymore, and when they do show up, they barely do anything but make cameos.
Rocknaldo actually shows how the gems viewed Steven back in the beginning. Steven cared about Ronaldo and didn’t want him to get hurt, even though he was being annoying and naive. And that parallels the relationship between the Gems (mostly Pearl) and Steven in SI

The whole filler thing isn't a problem technically because there isn't anything that actually fits the definition. What is a problem is that people feel that some episodes are interruptions to the regular story.

what they should have done with Reinaldo is give him a point, the gems have been protecting the town but not giving anything to the people in the town to defend themselves. they aren't given the option to join the crystal gems and help fight or just get involved with the protection of there home. i think if they did this it would be harder for the crystal gems to get rid of him because he has a point and he would be slightly more dignified. so to get rid of him they have to find a compromise, this would give the episode more depth and purpose balancing out the annoyance of the episode

Yeah Season 4 was not the best. But I’m glad Season 5 is fixing a lot of those issues. Besides the 6 town episodes after Wanted it seems like all the episodes for the most part have been moving the plot forward. Even the new town episodes are nice and I like how the Beach City characters feel like they’re part of the story more. Pool Hopping was really nice and meaningful and I love Garnet’s character development in it. And Letters to Lars had a really nice presentation. Plus it seems like for the rest of the season at least the Crewniverse is sidelining Beach City for gem episodes (based on the French leaks). It seems like the Crewniverse has gotten a good handle on storytelling. 👍👏👏👏

This series has become a lot less action based. You mentioned that there were only about three fight scenes in this whole season, but one thing you didn't mention was how much less fusion there was. The coolest scenes were always the fusion fights; Alexandrite versus Malachite was one of my all time favorites. But when we finally did get a new fusion in these last several episodes, we got: Topaz and Flourite. Both of whom have lazy, ugly, uninspired designs and have nothing close to the complexity of fusions like Malachite, Sugilite, or Stevonnie. It was painful to watch.
