I first heard this in my twenties, now 72 and still love James Taylor, this is simply brilliant, never tire of listening to this and so many other songs he recorded and still going strong. Incredible.
Long ago, a young man sits and plays his waiting game But things are not the same it seems as in such tender dreams Slowly passing sailing ships and Sunday afternoon Like people on the moon I see, are things not meant to be Where do those golden rainbows end? Why is this song so sad? Dreaming the dreams I've dreamed, my friend Loving the love I love To love is just a word I've heard when things are being said Stories my poor head has told me cannot stand the cold And in between what might have been and what has come to pass A misbegotten guess, alas, and bits of broken glass Where do your golden rainbows end? Why is this song I sing so sad? Dreaming the dreams I dream, my friend Loving the love I love to love to love to love Oh no, no, no, no
My father taught me this song to play on the guitar way back in 2013 & this is the first & one of my favorite JT songs. This song always gives me chill & tears sometimes. This song serves as one of my father's treasure & a gift of music for me, and I will never forget this till I become old. : From one of your Filipino fans Mr. James Taylor...God bless you & your music.
I held my breath throughout, my ears and eyes and heart are soaring to be transported back, and bring it back with me to today. James had no idea in 1970 how much hope he would plant to be rediscovered in 2020. Thank you. I feel wrapped in comfort to hear this of old, anew.
Omg.... the sound... So crisp and clear and pure. (Sits here with mouth agape) Did those people in the audience know how fortunate they were? How about the person exhaling their cigarette smoke.🤢 The seventies... Tang, polyester, ABC After School Specials 🤣
Simply wonderful.... breath-taking.... ! So peaceful, so easy-going.... And yet, what a wise, great, true message we all can learn from.... 👏🏻👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿 Thank you, James....
On 11/16/1970 I was a senior in high school. I had a guitar just like the one in this video, except mine had a pick guard. I was playing covers of Peter, Paul, and Mary and Simon and Garfunkel and some Beatles... I played with another guy at school and church coffee houses. Discovering James Taylor was such a joy. My range pretty much matched his and it was somewhat easy to pick up songs like this one, although in truth I could never come close to his ability. “You’ve Got a Friend” was my theme song. “Soundtrack of our lives” really fits James Taylor for me. This was about the time I first heard his music and I have been a fan, idol, admirer for 50 years. What an absolute gift his music and his person have been to the world. I remember in college that when I had disappointment in romance I would play “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” over and over. I have hundreds of stories like that where his music spoke directly to me. I know that millions of others have had the same experience. Thank you James, so much.
Thanks James for cheering us up once again with your music. It came round again as in my youth and made me smile and gladdened my heart once more. Your like a brother who comes every so often to cheer us up and give us something to smile about. Thank you 🙏.
A lovely , meaningful song ! All of JT ‘s music is so so special ! And just his voice , and guitar on this one . What talent ! Paula Montana - Fresno , Calif.
You know someone is a wordsmith when they can convey how they feel, you feel, and everyone else who ever lived has felt, say it better than you can ever imagine... but still make you feel like you're the only one who "really" knows. Add in the simple but beautiful music, and you have James Taylor.
My God this song 🎵 just stopped me in my tracks - you see I grew up allowing music to forever change and guide me -I even fell deep in love with a man that plays music for a living . Now that I remember this song I am smiling from all the beautiful rainy days that we relied on James to be the soundtrack of ♥️ im still in love with every song 🎵
The people in the audience were treated to James Taylor in his prime, you never know when sometimes in a casual setting you give one of the best concerts of your great career.
22 years old here? Geez. Sweet baby James & Apple debut already long past? HOW does someone this young literally invent an entire system of playing and singing an acoustic guitar that 50 years later still works? I am constantly in awe of this guy.
His voice is such an incredible comfort... nostalgia, and the sorrow of lost lives, lost ties and only memories left, that's the gift of James Taylor. I love his voice so much...
One of your very best, James. Fron the fitst time I ever heard this song when it was originally r released I fell in luv with it! Every time i hear it I fall in luv again. Thanx so much for all the joy you've given me!💝
I have the finest memories of that time in my life when I was first introduced to JT and his wonderful music. Soooo good to revisit that feeling once again.
Just discovered this video and it is bringing tears to my eyes. Helps me remember why I fell in love with him and his music, and still love both today. What a blessing!
Omg. I never saw this clip that I can remember: beautiful, wonderful and I am in this lifetime now 64 and I loved and love my sweet baby James. Thanks for posting!!!!
I first heard this song just before "Sweet Baby James" came out!! James Taylor was performing at a small college bar at Syracuse University. I think the tickets were about $5 !!
James has given me songs thro, my sister playing his l.p's, my 1st love teenage years, marriage,(my hubby is now a JT fan) 1st child, and now seeing me thro lockdown. Im learning to play Copperline on the ukulele :D ♥ Thank you James Taylor x
I remember this concert when it was 1st broadcast in the early 70, been with it ever since. Merry Xmas to all, hope you all have a Happy New Year. 🎅🎅🎅🎄🎄🎄🥳🥳🥳
I wasnt been to 1st grade school yet ,that year `70, when it came a hit.. only when i reach High school that i loved this song at 1978. what a great he was then.
This song was getting a lot of airplay when I was a teenager, and it was what got me to buy my first James Taylor album, Mud Slide Slim. I became a huge fan. Great to hear this early acoustic version without backing vocals, before it even had a title!
One of my favorite songs of JT's. I sang it many times when I was breaking up with girlfriends in my youth. Things have worked out for the best though as I've been married 36 years to the love of my life.
My wife was exactly 9yo and I was 11yo back then. Though that age I know I was following the guitar cords using Jingle Guitar Magazine. James was our No.1. Our lifetime privilege listening his songs. Thanks BBC and JT😉
James (or whoever monitors this board), I requested this song last week and all of a sudden here it is! I don’t know if that’s why you put it up yesterday, but I’m glad you did! Thank you so much. I never thought this song got its due. I always thought it was one of your very best, but it seems like you rarely sing it in concerts. It’s like it just died away. Thanks again for addressing my request! This song is sooo beautiful. You can’t imagine the satisfaction I’ve had from harmonizing with it for the past 50 years (usually in the car). You and I sound great together! 😂
I suffer from depression. Very bad at times. I’m not sure but I believe that James has as well during his life. Another grey morning is about depression but I’m not sure if it’s about himself. The words almost seem more relative to a mother suffering from postpartum depression. His music has always been a big part of my life for over 40 years. It has helped me through some incredibly tough times and I wish I could thank him in person as silly as that might sound. I’m not well right now but I’m listening to his music and marveling at the what an incredible songwriter he is. No fluff. Just meaningful songs sung so perfectly. James Taylor is a treasure.
You're not alone. James has suffered from depression throughout his life, and was hospitalized on more than one occasion because of it. "Knockin' Around the Zoo" and "Sunny Skies" are two of the songs that reference his stays in psychiatric hospitals.
Oh my why am i crying..is it because im a senior citizen.. recalling my youth..so precious
Same here...
just bask in the memories.......we were so lucky
Its always a treat to hear James but man oh man how lucky was this audience on this magical day????
Just what I was thinking. It's like a tiny club!!
@@lizzybeth22 Didn't need to see that smoking chick though.....I know, different time and values..............
Absolutely....his voice is a gift...
...I always lived this song, I will sleep good tonight!
RIGHT?!
I hear this song and I’m suddenly 21 again, sitting alone in a strange town and wondering what in the hell happened to all my plans and dreams.
Amen!
I hope wherever you are on your timeline , you’ve found yourself right where you need to be ♥️
Was it so rigid, that plan ?
I’m 18 alone in my first apartment wondering what my life will be.
Takes me back to being 21 again oh happy days
I first heard this in my twenties, now 72 and still love James Taylor, this is simply brilliant, never tire of listening to this and so many other songs he recorded and still going strong. Incredible.
I agree completely sir. Can listen to his songs endlessly. Even love to follow on my guitar. Attempt to anyway.
Simple, melodic and beautiful
❤️ You have no idea how many times I played this song when I was a teenager. ❤️
Yes, I was 15....had so much more to go! I love how his music is timeless!❤
I was 13, and yes, I know.
Hard to fathom this song is 50 years old! It still feels like yesterday. Bless you James!
His music is timeless.....
No one out there has a voice like his!!
Long ago, a young man sits and plays his waiting game
But things are not the same it seems as in such tender dreams

One of the greatest songs ever written by a man named J Taylor. Thanks for what you’ve done for us.
My father taught me this song to play on the guitar way back in 2013 & this is the first & one of my favorite JT songs. This song always gives me chill & tears sometimes. This song serves as one of my father's treasure & a gift of music for me, and I will never forget this till I become old.

You should hear it by Earl Klugh or Lisa Simpson's Parody "A Sad Lament"
I held my breath throughout, my ears and eyes and heart are soaring to be transported back, and bring it back with me to today. James had no idea in 1970 how much hope he would plant to be rediscovered in 2020. Thank you. I feel wrapped in comfort to hear this of old, anew.
Andrea Miller,
I feel the same! ❤️
Me too....
Me too.
❤️
Perfectly said 🙏
This is one of my top 5 JT's of all time. Missing Joni's harmony, though!!! God, I loved them together!!!!!!
WHOA!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Evokes such melancholy & joy about days gone by. 💔 ❤. Love James Taylor music
Young with no clue to how much joy he would give. Love this song, Thanks JT
I love how James just sits there and plays this song. Jus pure and simple. Beautiful.
I love James Taylor. He soothes my soul. And reminds me of past times that were great
We could all use some James Taylor comfort right now. 😍
"Long ago, a young man sits & plays his waiting game". Yeah, that's how I think we're ALL feeling right now!!!!
Well said!
Of course
Omg.... the sound...
So crisp and clear and pure. (Sits here with mouth agape)
Did those people in the audience know how fortunate they were? How about the person exhaling their cigarette smoke.🤢 The seventies... Tang, polyester, ABC After School Specials 🤣
I hear the 80s in our music all the time. When are we going to hear the 70s again? Damn.
Simply wonderful.... breath-taking.... !
So peaceful, so easy-going....
And yet, what a wise, great, true message
we all can learn from.... 👏🏻👏🏼👏🏽👏🏾👏🏿
Thank you, James....

This is my favorite version. Simple, no accompaniment, perfect.
mine too
Nothing sounds better to me than the sweet sound of a single guitar and James. 💕
Thank you for releasing these videos every Friday....
Thanks James for cheering us up once again with your music. It came round again as in my youth and made me smile and gladdened my heart once more. Your like a brother who comes every so often to cheer us up and give us something to smile about. Thank you 🙏.

Hands down, my favorite James Taylor song.

Such a wonderful artist and so sensitive and sincere, his music and just the words that he uses, he’s very relatable

This not only about dreams of man, but women too.
So many lives touched through your timeless music, JT. I'm living a blessed life and you've provided the soundtrack!
this is actually THE BEST VERSION of the song, IMHO. it's just so beautiful and yet sad at the same time
I totally agree! I've listened to this countless times

Great to see the Gibson. It has a great chime and goes oh so well with the best singer/songwriter in our lifetime!!

Wonderful comment...totally agree.🦋
"Magnificent song!!
And!
This concert,
Is my favorite singer- song writter performance, with-out question!!
I have the finest memories of that time in my life when I was first introduced to JT and his wonderful music. Soooo good to revisit that feeling once again.
Hearing a song that explains your tough times is soothing because you feel like you are not alone.
One of the most captivating songs about love. Up there along with Beatles’ Yesterday.
Just discovered this video and it is bringing tears to my eyes. Helps me remember why I fell in love with him and his music, and still love both today. What a blessing!
Wonderful! Just wonderful! More talent than I can ever dream of having. Regards, Dave
Brought back good memories of listening to it when it first came out. You continue to play a major role in my musical life library. Thanks
🌞✌️
Omg. I never saw this clip that I can remember: beautiful, wonderful and I am in this lifetime now 64 and I loved and love my sweet baby James. Thanks for posting!!!!
Wow it's great. How I wish my daughter can come up with that amazing performance.❤
Understated and masterful. Thanks for the decades of inspiration.
I love the way you tune and retune you guitar before playing the song. Just love your singing and guitar playing; wish I had that talent.
The greatest singer-songwriter to date.
Certainly way up there, pal
Hell yyyeeeee.✌️✌️😎😎🏴🏴🇺🇦🇺🇦

Some lyrics just hit you to a depth you never seem possible.
Fabulous! Great song and greater singer!!! Thank you for all you have given us James and your autobiography is inspiring and thoughtful.
Such a favorite to get lost in. Bravo. 🎶🎶🎶👏😍👍

came home from college one day in 1973 and one of my roomies was playing Mud Slide Slim album, been captured by this mans music ever since
One of my favorite songs of JT's. I sang it many times when I was breaking up with girlfriends in my youth. Things have worked out for the best though as I've been married 36 years to the love of my life.
The accoustics in that room are off-the-charts perfect. That Taylor kid ain't too bad either. :o)
My fav song. Lovely. What a treat to hear it performed before it was given a title.
A man and a guitar, no bs. It doesn't get any better than this! Mesmerizing.
My wife was exactly 9yo and I was 11yo back then. Though that age I know I was following the guitar cords using Jingle Guitar Magazine. James was our No.1. Our lifetime privilege listening his songs. Thanks BBC and JT😉

Love, love, love this song, thank you Mr. Legend, JT!❤
Wonderful tune that got very little airplay.

From Italy Pier
What a melody, Lyrics say it all. Where is mines???😢
Always a pleasure to hear James Taylor sing! I could listen to him all day long! ❤️❤️❤️😊🙏
I was 3 1/2 when this was performed. I'd give plenty to get to sit there now and watch it live at nearly 57.
The song was so new it had no title-so long ago and far away! Sublime
