Yes there are not too many people out here. There are military bases you come across but you're not allow to film them (I don't want to get in trouble I I haven't filmed any). They are the only thing you occasionally come across but normally you don't see anyone there anyway.
Yes the Indian short cuts are a lot of fun and a bit steeper so I can make use of the. extra power on this bike.

I was on Umling La on this 15th of August. It was probably one of the most memorable and dangerous days riding a bike in Ladakh. We took the same route that you showed in the beginning of the video. I was with my friend group; we had a few guys on their bikes and two guys in a Mahindra Thar. We made it to Hanle in the morning and stopped at the café near that Hanle sign. A few guys in the café told us that there is a shortcut that will join the paved road later; it’s hardly 20 km, but it'll cut around 30 km from the main route. We started riding behind a guided group. We thought the tour guide guys would know the route better than anyone and followed them. They took us to this insane off-road landscape; the dust, the soil, everything was black. Even the dust was so fine it was getting into our noses and lungs. Strong wind would blow the dust; everything was black all around us. Riding the bike in black sand and with high winds was something when nothing is visible. We took the off-road hairpin turns; that was the most dangerous hairpin turn I have ever ridden on. It was all black sand we were riding on. Finally, we joined the main road. It was beautifully sunny up top. We decided we would take that tarmac back to Hanle. Everyone had started feeling the low oxygen. One of my friends was having difficulty breathing and had a fever for the last two days. I felt a slight headache in the front portion of my head. The oxygen was taking a toll on everyone. We stopped at that café that comes in the way to drink water and eat something. After that, we talked to a few guys who explained the way to us. We started riding again, and a few kilometers ahead, we saw a sign for Hanle. That was a sign showing the way opposite to where the tarmac was going. One of us said, “Let’s see what it is,” because we had only one tarmac road to Hanle; maybe the road starts ahead. So we continued off-road, and that was our second mistake. We kept riding off-road to a point where there were no road signs, no tire marks in the dust, and we still kept riding until we stopped at a place that had a sudden elevation fall. It wasn’t a cliff; it was like a slope, but it looked like a cliff from far. The slope was made up of small rocks. At this point, we had no network, the map wasn’t working, and the map showed no roads here. Only GPS was working, and since we made the turn, we hadn't seen any other vehicle. We stopped there to plan our way. What we saw was an empty valley with mountains up to the horizon, and the GPS showed us that we needed to get down the slope and drive northwest. Before we could decide, my friend who was driving the Thar came from behind and drove off to the slope. We followed him; it was one hell of a ride. The sand and rocks were flying around us. The car was descending and creating a big dust cloud that made nothing visible. There were no tire marks; it was as if we were driving down one of those slopes of the mountains. As we were in the middle of that huge slope, the guy in the Thar said, “I don’t have much fuel. Keep going; I can’t stop again and again.” But we rode down that slope; there was no path, no road, and we didn't know where to go. So in that empty, flat Ladakh landscape, we kept driving as the GPS showed the direction. I noticed a few black-colored rocks on the side kept at specific distances. It looked like something was written on it. We went closer and saw “Hanle” written on the rock with an arrow sign. We had a little relief. So we kept following the stones; they took us to the end of the valley and to a canyon-like landscape. Then we saw a first vehicle that was different from ours-a local truck driver. We asked him about directions. He said we were on the right way. “Keep following the stones along the path, and at the end of the canyon, you’ll see Hanle.” We did that, and as we turned for the final time, we saw a few houses. What a sigh of relief! That moment of riding in the empty vastness, I feel I will never forget that ride ever.

    Hey Joe,
Just wanted to let you know that the route from Diskit to Pangong Lake, which most maps show, is currently closed-we faced the same issue. If you had turned back towards Diskit and taken another route (locals can guide you), you would have reached Pangong much faster instead of taking the Diskit-Leh-Pangong route. You missed out on one of the most adventurous rides by not taking the Diskit-Pangong route! That said, the drive from Diskit to Leh and on to Pangong is also amazing, with the newly laid tarmac between towering mountains being quite an experience in itself.
    Safe travels!

Don't ride more than 300km a day beyond Manali as it would tire you out completely. Have some backup plans involving backup routes if the main one falls through due to some reason.
