I've been in Zora's headspace and never again! I think that growing together only works when people are at least starting at about the same level and have about the same drive to grow.

Unfortunately, Zora and Franklin were both not ready for a relationship. She was a people pleaser and got used and he took full advantage of that. This plays out a lot everyday in real life relationships and even marriages. They were not equally yoked or compatible really. Great review! :)

The novel was way better than the book, IMO, because Franklin admitted all his insecurities. What I got from the novel is that Franklin was used to dating women that didn't have their shit together. He almost had a superiority complex over them. He got with Zora and didn't know how to handle a woman who had her shit together. Zora enabled him because she didn't want to be known as high maintenance.
This book was a warning sign and the movie should have done the same

Disappearing Acts is one my favorite movies. This movie did exactly what it supposed to do, to teach us a lesson. It gave us all the red flags 🚩 we women/men watch out for. I loved Disappearing Acts. Watch it and learn a lesson! Franklin ex wife summed it all up, “ The Black D Ain’t All What It’s Cracked Up To Be “ Watch it! Let your eyes be open 😊 Is it love or is it good sex? Don’t be fooled, learn the difference ladies, learn the lesson. Please don’t try to raise a grown ass boy and to our mature brothers, don’t try to raise a grown ass girl. 💞 I loved the end. Continue paying child support, be part of your son’s life. One thing sure,we would be spending our lives separately!

Zora was an enabler. Franklin was immature. As much as I want to bash this movie, it's actually realistic except the happy ending. I know a lot of women with similar stories to Zora. They did love each other but they weren't good for each other. Franklin was never going to man up as long as he had her as a crutch.
I think this is when the disconnect started between black men and women. Women were influenced by authors like Terry McMillan, Zane and others. A lot of us men at the same time were influenced by misogynistic and degrading rap music. I have an ex who admitted that some of those books gave her trust issues. Too Short and Snoop definitely didn't help my view of women.

I definitely agree that the disconnect and vitriol started around this time. I wouldn't put Terry McMillan books in the same class with the Zane books. I stayed clear of the Zane books because I could see them for the cheap titillating drama they were whereas TM books just shined a light on relationships that many accepted as the norm in black culture. I grew up watching soap operas and other romantic movies, and it never occurred to me to think my idea of a relationship were limited to those books or the music

It was toxic but very realistic. Zora knew he was broke and dated down due to physical attraction. Honestly, she was at fault. He was of low vibration but it was no secret, Bx he was honest about his situation ( with the exception of lying about his kids and wife ) . I can’t believe she even entertained him . Gina Prince-Bythewood, patron saint of female characters who make the wrong choices. Unfortunately, Sanaa Lathan was her poster child. I'm surprised that her father, Stan Lathan, didn't steer her away from this character trope. Doing this type of role is fine if it's the first time...but then you go on to do Love and Basketball, Brown Sugar, The Best Man, The Wood, Out of Time...Sanaa Lathan has to be the most dogged-out Black Woman in romantic movie history. I also hated this movie's depiction of the Black man; Wesley's character was trifling. It's funny that today's social media argument between Black men and women is that the women choose this type of man over nice guys. The only difference here is that Wesley's character was at least a "regular-type" guy, and not a "six-figure" type.

Great review, the movie is ok, there relationship was very toxic, and the ending felt rushed that the director probably said the film cant end with where they both go there own ways so they both end up together and all is forgiven, If I want to see a better film with Wesley Snipes and Sanaa Lathan both that they were in I'll just watch Blade

I love this film, It really is a reality film. The whole love story and how life got in the way made it even more perfect and real. I think that’s what made it a great watch. I’ve watched this movie several times , and saw many reflections of me in Zora . Franklins actions were allowed , yet they loved each other . When they separated they grew and that is what they needed to do, be better for themselves, and their child. 💯🔥💕

Unfortunately, Terry McMillan’s books are largely based on her own experiences and attitudes about men and relationships.
She clearly has the tendency to date beneath her and possesses some sort of rescue complex. Look at the whole “How Stella Got Her Groove Back” situation. And the fact that the story was all wrapped up neatly in pretty paper and bows, women began to believe that it was feasible to be 40-something and successful and have a lasting, happy relationship with a 20-year old gold digger.
Although “realistic”, I think Ms. McMillan’s novels and the films they are based on encourage Black women to make poor choices based on loneliness and denial.

Great comment. I don’t understand how as a writer, one can continue to write and sow such seeds of dysfunction into existence especially on black female characters. Like the books/movies don’t have to promote perfection (because life isn’t) but at least tell a reasonable story not bogged down by struggle love
