    Sounds a lot more expensive once you factor in all the necessary mods beyond the portals.

    • @mtnyotas
      @mtnyotas  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not all of them are 100% necessary, but they're LIKELY going to be things you do for a 3rd Gen Tacoma in this case...

    So appreciate you guys! Awesome content always and fun to boot! So glad someone finally gave the real cost of adding portals to a Yota. It's easy to drop $20K and get portals only later to realize that you have got to add in some costly mods to accommodate them. BTW, you didn't add in the potential need/cost for re-gearing depending on the tire size, etc. ($3K?). And that every 3K miles you have the equivalent of '4 more diffs' (LOL) to change out the oil of ...necessitating tire removal. Small deal I know, but noteworthy. Keep the vids coming bro!

    • @jgm113
      @jgm113 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      The portals themselves are the regear so that's not necessary.

    • @psalm11823
      @psalm11823 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You may want more than a 22% reduction(74Weld) depending on how massive the tires are. :)@@jgm113

    I wonder what the basis is for each manifacturer's maintenance plan on their portals. The Werewolf portals are 5k miles, and the 74welds are 3K miles for oil changes.

    • @74weld
      @74weld 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      We are friends with and located right near Maxima Racing Fluids. We sat down with their engineers and spent time showing them our gear boxes, talking with them about what we saw in racing and let them give us advice and education on oil. Our recommendations are conservative. Can you go longer than 3K, ya, but we look at it like this. This is a performance product and you should treat it like one. Oil changes are cheap and easy. Without going into a bunch of detail, the gears actually are not touching when they engage. There is a microscopic fluid film from oil that creates a buffer between the gear surfaces. As debris gets in the oil that microscopic layer breaks down and you end up metal on debris on metal. The his can lead to pitting over time. Keep the oil clean and give it the opportunity to do what it was designed to do. Protect and cushion.

      You’re higher in the air, but more weight down low, less shock preload so more travel, but you’re a bit taller and you’re a bit wider. I’d say it’s about the same as a normal lift in regard to getting off-camber.

    The real issue is that every few years another portal comes and dies and there's no parts for orphan portals.
    Because the only market is show trucks and "influencers" and there's just not that many.
    Side by side portals are $2500-3500. That's where they'll need to be on price to have staying power. Otherwise I'll just buy a unimog or Volvo 303. Or put portals on my side by side.
    Love the idea. Need to get realistic with the prices.

    • @mtnyotas
      @mtnyotas  หลายเดือนก่อน

      74Weld has changed all that... they've stood the test of time and aren't going anywhere. Price is high but worth it. Also, we have 3 portal installs on the calendar this month alone, none of them are influencers.

    • @MrJcjet

      @@mtnyotas We'll see in 15 years. Time is the filter. Not enough time has passed to have knowledge either way on this. A few dozen units does not a long term product make. It could go either way. We don't know yet. But historically it just hasn't worked very well.
      A big red flag for me is the manufacturing claims. Why on earth would they be making them on a CNC mill beyond the prototypes? Our shop has those in-house and still wouldn't do that for this type of component. Producing efficiently should be job #1 in getting costs down. If they could connect with a production manufacturing company to do this, they'd have a much better shot at long term success. Even sand casting plus machining should bring costs down significantly.
      I hope they have success. Just not sure I see it. Not when the cost of just the parts is comparable to a complete 406 ready to go.

      You can get to a 37 with 74Weld pretty easily! There's a bit less width, and wheel offset matters a lot there too... either way you're realistically going to need to do some clearance work. 35s look too small on 74Weld though, IMO.

      @@mtnyotas I get you are getting a lift built in, from what I am seeing it seems like you adding 4 more components that can break and will be not as easy to source parts. would it not be simpler to do a lift and add a dual transfer ? I am not trying to beat the thing up I am not seeing the real advantage for the average truck. in a competition truck maybe it makes sense. Don't get me wrong as someone who has a small mill and lathe I love to see this kind of machine work and engineering. but I just do not get it ... the cost , the weight and then the potential problems when they fail. what are the advantages over a dual transfer case ?
