Yes, I definitely think Anne of Cleves was the smartest of all of King Henry VIII's wives. She gave him what he wanted, a divorce, and made out like a boss in the process!!!

Anne has always been my favorite of Henry's wives. Clever enough to unload the old boy, get a nice chunk of change, and was in control of her life. I think she influenced Elizabeth's decision regarding Marriage.

@?,?, ?,?, Feminist indoctrination? Is that even a fucking thing? You must be kidding me. You know little about sexism if you find "feminist indoctrination" to be an issue even now, especially considering even if it WERE real enough to be a worldwide ideal, it would be a good thing. Men are violent and fickle. That's not debatable, it's a long proven, statistically backed, peer-reviewed FACT. Despite that bullshit tidbit of yours, which you ought to be embarrassed about, Anne of Cleves likely did influence Elizabeth. Probably not as much as knowing the history of her father's marriages, which I don't doubt she took a strong enough interest in to make sure she knew all information, particularly her mother's tale, AND being witness to the failed rule of her half-sister, THEN being subsequently hounded to marry. Those were in all likeliness the greater influence on her decision to never marry than any one individual. Despite that, I find it funny a man should be on here raging about feminism when back then women had virtually no say, except Elizabeth, who still didn't push for women's rights, though I'm sure it was something she thought about but knew was too progressive for her time. And during her entire reign she was ridiculed as a ruler only because she was a woman. The way this sad excuse for a history buff thinks he knows what's what. Perhaps he wishes women were still shackled by a disgustingly patriarchal society like we were back then. Yet, I'd put a paycheck on each of Henry's wives that he is just a lonely prig that masturbates to a plethora of women that wouldn't ever submit to him. Mister, of low stature and lesser comprehension, shove a humble pie up your sad, not-getting-fucked-by-anyone-with-self-worth having ass. Savor this lady-made dish in the depths of your naivete, you pompous, swollen and pathetically ill-mannered, emotionally caustic, blue sack, that is accompanied by surely an even more depressing presence of manhood, for denying any influence from Anne or other womens' influence in Elizabeth's life! It's unquestionably laughable (but... oh no! Feminism!)! Have a thoroughly disappointing and mediocre life that I'm sure is already well in progress.

Hello, I'm spanish so I can tell you a bit more about the three kings. We call them the Magician Kings, Melchor has a long white beard, Gaspar has brown beard and Baltasar is black and has no beard. During Christmas, children send their letters with their wishes (and their parents must take note to buy what they ask for before leaving the letters in the mail boxes). Then, every January 5th we have parades in every city and town where the three kings (three men disguised, obviously) throw candy at the children. Then, before going to bed, every family member leaves a pair of shoes in the living room, and leave something to drink and eat for the kings and their camels. The next morning we all wake up for our gifts next to our shoes, it is really great when there are kids around to enjoy all the process, my little brother was always so nervous that he couldn't sleep that night. I really miss those days. Christmas are always better with children around. Well, I hope you enjoyed this short explanation :) In other parts of Spain people do things a little differently but in essence that's what we do.

I don’t remember if you’ve touched on this in any of your videos, but is it common knowledge that Anne was really put off by Henry’s appearance and wounds and her reaction when he surprised her the first night they met made him resent her? And this seeming “rejection” is what put him off to her? Then, he saying she appeared to have had a child was an excuse to not consummate the marriage? Or do you think he was impotent?
I’ve read different opinions about this and wondered what your view was.

What I don't understand about Henry VIII was his attitude towards marriage. Royals back then, married not for love but for political advantage. Kings routinely kept mistresses just for pleasure, so what was wrong with Henry? Could he have not just consummate his marriage with Anne of Cleves, try for a son, and carry on. To say that Anne was so unappealing that he could not do the deed sounds suspicious. I bet he could not do it with Kathryn Howard either because he was probably impotent at that point due to ill health. Anne was lucky because she received a good settlement while poor Kathryn Howard, a mere teenager, was executed. In my opinion, Henry VIII was the most selfish and tyrannical monarch in English history, and serves him right that his dynasty ended despite all his efforts.

    • @wordforger
      @wordforger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Uh... It could also be how the two ladies approached the bedroom that made a difference. By all accounts, Anne was a bit of a naive virgin who thought kissing would make her pregnant. Meanwhile, Katherine Howard had already had carnal relationships with several men, and she likely learned a thing or two. Henry would have had to do all the work with Anne, which he apparently wasn't 'up' to by that point. With Katherine, she likely took a lot of the effort from him. *shrug* There was also the matter of pride involved as well. Anne seemed to have been rather forthright, and embarrassed him by seeing him as the sickly old man he was on their first meeting when he attempted to come and win her in disguise as if he were some great romantic prize. Meanwhile, Katherine Howard seemed delighted by the gifts and attention, and was a pretty young girl, which didn't harm Henry's self image one bit. Anne didn't play the "courtly love" game. Katherine Howard would have grown up with it and played it to a tee.
Overall I'd say it was Anne's foreigner status, her lack of deception, the alliance, and her willingness to accede to Henry's desire and allow him to retain his pride that saved her.
Katherine Howard was a subject with powerful relations, certainly, but relations that were also subjects. She knew the way the Tudor Court worked, though perhaps was left a little too much to her own devices as a girl, making her easy prey to several men's advances. When Henry found out his pretty young wife (the rose without a thorn) had, in fact, had several thorns... Well, that truly wounded his pride because it put the lie to the idea that he was some sort of Adonis before the whole of the court.
During that time, too, deceiving the king was considered treason. That's why Thomas Cromwell, who arranged the marriage between Anne of Cleves and Henry ended up being arrested eventually executed. And that is why Katherine Howard died.

🇦🇺🦘 Enjoyed hearing about how the Feast of the Epiphany is celebrated in Spain. Also, interesting (to say the least) to know that Henry VIII blamed his disasterous wedding night on his bride, Anne of Cleves.
Poor Anne. It was Henry who had 'a problem' and not Anne. He used her as an excuse. How aweful for her, knowing what he had said to others, and what came after (he leaving her to marry another). Anne was a strong lady indeed. Thank you Claire 👑👍

I have always wondered why we say there were 3 wise men when the bible does not say that. It says there were 3 different types of gifts but doesnt give the number of wise men?
9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. 11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

I am shocked with the news that Henry the eighth was unable to consummate the marriage. From what I read before, he bedded just about every maiden or married woman in the court or wherever his eye roamed. She lucked out by keeping her head and her virtue. This is an amazing video series where I learn so much about small facts that have been omitted from boring histories of the period.

Almonte Paolilli By that time he was overweight already (although he got a lot worse) and he was decades older than her. He also had his badly ulcerated leg by stage and the wound stank and made it very difficult for him to walk. He was not a well man.
Have a look at the excellent documentary on TH-cam about the body of Henry viii where they have scanned it and done a virtual autopsy on him.

    • @annwilliams6438

darkflame44 Nope. I don't think Anne's brother would have been pleased if Henry had chopped off his sister's head. I think he would have gone to war with England if that had happened. He also had absolutely no reason to charge her with treason as she was seen as very chaste and didn't know anyone at court to have gotten involved with. Both of Henry's wives who got the chop were said to have slept with other men while married to Henry, although with the first Anne it seems that those were completely fabricated charges.

I honestly do not think Anne of Cleves was an ugly woman. As stated Anne Boleyn wasn't THE most stunning women at court, yet he still loved her. But where Anne B knew about court games and courtly love, Anne C did not. So when Henry showed up in disguise, playing his game, she didn't know it was a game and didn't know what part she was supposed to play. She just saw a fat, smelly, old man she didn't know who was pawing at her. So she rejected him and that embarrassed him in front of the court. I think that is why he took such a harsh dislike to her.

Henry obviously had a problem with biology. Psst, it's my understanding that gynecological docs can't even make that call, while looking into a woman's vagina, so doubt a guy is going to make that call by feeling up her breasts.
