  • In today's "on this day in Tudor history" video, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, takes us back in time to 19th January 1547, when poet, courtier and soldier, Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey and son of Thomas Howard, 3rd Duke of Norfolk, was executed by beheading on Tower Hill.

    I recently got this book as a birthday present for myself. I work overnights so I have several hours and have been enjoying learning more about one of my favorite periods of time. Thank you for passing on the knowledge.

    Whenever I hear of an execution under Henry VIII's reign, I immediately think it was unwarranted. I wonder if any modern mock courts have judged these cases?

      No, unfortunately we couldn't do it because any evidence is long gone.

    Thank you Claire - there is a nice drawing by Holbein of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey. He is a rather long faced young man with a jaunty feathered hat and a bowl haircut.

    ✨ can you imagine the bright pale fear in his heart-like who wants to die that way. Remembering one of your previous videos, I will always remember how shocked I was, having watched Wolf Hall, the eerie beheading of Anne Boleyn
    Looking forward to the new season of Wolf Hall - and poor Thomas Cromwell !

      I did a talk about Henry VIII's accident for the Tudor Society but I'm not sure if I have done one on my channel. I did talk about it a bit in my video for 12th January - th-cam.com/video/paalH_oJQ8s/w-d-xo.html - and I might just cover it on the anniversary of the accident which is in a few days time - 24th January.

    Many times the betrayer soon became the betrayed. No one was safe when Henry was on the thrown. I'm sure he was not the only cruel king.

    This was the same day Billy Handsome, Sal Deluca, and Finn O’ Leary were executed by electric chair in MOTD.

    🇭🇲🦘 (viewed 17/01/2021) It is so aweful that Henry Howard (Earl of Surrey) was betrayed by so called 'friends' and wrongly accused. Totally 'innocent' of
    ... any wrongdoing. Nevertheless, found guilty and executed. Such a waste of life, and so very sad. "Thank you" Claire💓👑👍

    FIRST........isn't it thought that the seymours had it in for surrey..........henry did elevate surrey , to the order of the knight of the garter, since he was katherines kin................

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Seymours and Howards were definitely vying for power at the time.

      @@anneboleynfiles ...........yes , they were but the howards had claim , on a much ancient bloodline , in connection , to royalty......but I guess the seymours , were wealthier (and the fact , that jane , had bore the king a son ) ......GREAT SHARE . really looking forward to the next.........

    Henry VIII and the lying betrayers are in for a shock when we all have to stand before God and give an account for our actions.
