    Anne is my favorite of all the Queens. She was clever, diplomatic, and had great people sense She was able to unload the old boy, kept her head, got a nice chunk of change, and was able live life on her terms.

    I think Anne was actually the wisest of Henrys wives. She was foreign so had no idea of how very difficult Henry and marriage to him, would be. Katherine Parr was much more cognizant of what was needed, so her, later, marriage to Henry( his last) was much easier to navigate, although there was a bad patch... Anne was able to avoid any subsequent unpleasantness by taking advice from others, and making that advice seem conform with her own desires, yet from obedience not from her hearts wish... so Henry could be at ease that she was willing to do as he wished from her great regard and respect for his person not only as King... I do think Henry had the idea that Anne loved him and wanted him to be happy even if it meant she would lose him... Smart woman indeed!

    It seems to me that, not only was Anne of Cleves wise enough to acquiesce to Henry VIII's decision to annul their marriage, but Henry VIII was also wise enough not to incur the wrath (and start a possible war) with the Protestant League and the Duke of Cleves at a time when he was also fearing the possible invasion of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles (Catherine of Aragon's nephew) and the King of France.

    Anne of Cleves seems both intelligent and socially adept. Henry would have done better to have kept her than to marry the flighty teenager Catherine Howard. But sadly, Henry's "unofficial" first meeting poisoned his mind against Anne.

    Claire, do you think that Anne's initial meeting with Henry may have ruined her prospects? Henry turned up 'unofficially' dressed in disguise, went up to Anne and kissed her. Anne, who did not know that this man was indeed the King, rejected his kiss forcibly, perhaps with an expression of disgust. I wonder if this action made Henry realize that he was no longer the dashing athlete of his youth?

    • @anneboleynfiles

      Yes, I think he was humiliated and that this affected how he viewed her from then on.

      @nikkicooper1371 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@anneboleynfiles I agree, too, that he was humiliated or put off by that first meeting.
      I'm curious what your thoughts are on Henry's words about Anne the morning after their wedding? If I recall correctly, he claims to know that she was not a maid by touching her breasts and belly. But there seemed to be little anger behind those words, and he reaction is so calm sounding. Not as I would expect from a king who had just discovered his bride had already known another man. Particularly a king like Henry, and one who had two previous wives whose divorce/execution had involved accusations of not being a virgin/infidelities. I would expect him to be much more upset in light of that history (if he had even somewhat believed either accusation to be true). His reaction doesn't really seem to match with his claims, personality, or previous marriage history, and seems more like a convenient way to shift all the blame onto Anne so that he bore none.

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      @@nikkicooper1371 I believe that he was just making excuses for not being able to consummate the marriage. It couldn't be his fault, afterall, he was the king, it had to be her fault, that's the way he thought.

    First, thank you Ms Ridgway for your scholarship. I've followed your website for some time, and have been impressed by your evidence-based essays; so unlike many Tudor enthusiasts.
    Like others here, I find Anne of Cleves' story compelling -- what little we know of it. That said, I'm reluctant to call her courageous or uniquely clever. Much as I admire her flexibility, review of all scholarly material about her finds her more pusillanimous than intrepid. Moreover, the wealth accorded her by Henry VIII was short lived, and she spent many of her remaining years begging money from Henry's children and her brother. Again, I'm a supporter of Anne, but I'm ever cautious in trying to pen the mysteries of her life with modern ink.

    Am loving all the videos and have been binge-watching them! I am delighted at your dedication to the research and providing us with your sources and your reasons for the conclusions you reach. Keep up the fantastic work! I had a question concerning something in this video. When the chronicler is describing Henry's apparel and in describing his coat with all its costly and heavy adornment, you quoted him as saying that "the ground little appeared". You have taken that to mean literally "the ground", ie. the earth beneath the King, but I have a strong suspicion that he is referring instead to the ground of the cloth, meaning the background. I believe that what he is saying is that the coast was so heavily adorned with lace etc that little of the fabric of the coat itself was visible. What do you think?

  • @makinapacal

    It is interesting to note that apparently after Henry VIII divorced Anne of Cleves. Anne apparently showed no interest in getting married. Except for the very dubious rumor that supposedly after Catherine Howard's execution Anne thought of remarrying Henry. I doubt there is anything to this. Anne came from one of minor German principalities, as a sister to the Duke. She had little prestige, little education and not exactly a position of high prestige. Further she completely under the thumb and domination of her brother the Duke. If she resented being in that position it is understandable. She was then married to a foreign King of a much more powerful and wealthy Kingdom. That must of held a great deal of appeal to her. To say nothing of the status and wealth at her disposal. However the King disliked her and after short time in England she must have been very worried abut what might happen to herself. Certainly the possibility of death would be there and being sent back to Cleves, divorced to live once more under her brother, the Duke's, control would have been humiliating to say the least. So I suspect Anne played it cool and started working out just how to get the best deal she could out of the situation. She may have been terrified during this time but I suspect she made it very clear she would make no trouble if she got a deal. How much Anne was involved in actually negotiating the deal, either directly or indirectly, is not known. But she got her deal and because the terms were so favourable to her I can't believe she had nothing to do with the terms she was offered. So she got a large number of estates in England, the position of "King's Sister" which more or less made her a member of the Royal Family. She got to see the Royal Children and in terms of social position she was below only the King, the King's wife and the King's children. And on top of that she was financially one of the wealthiest people in England and entirely independent of Male control whether her brother or a husband. I am not the least bit surprised that after her experiences she did NOT remarry.

      The meeting I describe here is their meeting on 3rd January, the official reception of Anne at Greenwich Park/Blackfriars, whereas you are referring to their first meeting at Rochester on 1st January 1540. I look at the accounts of that in my article at www.theanneboleynfiles.com/1-january-1540-henry-viii-anne-cleves-disastrous-first-meeting/
      Both chroniclers' accounts have Henry VIII dressed up in a cloak of "marble" and surprising Anne.

    From the pictures I think she was probably the prettiest, but after her initial rejection of him he did not 'like her' while being married to her. She was in a terrible state as his wife. Her brother had not given her a dowry or even much clothing or money to sustain her. (I believe Henry actually gave her most of her clothes besides her main outfits for meeting him and the wedding??) And when he was trying to get rid of her she was pretty much in poverty and treated abysmally.
    Thankfully she gave him exactly what he wanted and she was a foreign princess so Henry set her up with the former Queen Anne's property and probably goodies too. Anne then managed her household very well and became a wealthy lady. So good for her. Unfortunately Mary made her life miserable again when she was Queen.
