    Unveiling the Mystery: Henry VIII's Coffin and the Ominous Prophecy
    Description: 🕵️‍♂️ Unlock the secrets of history as I delve into the eerie events surrounding King Henry VIII's burial. On 14th February, just weeks after his demise, the monarch's coffin embarked on a journey to St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle. Yet, what happened during an overnight rest at Syon Abbey would send shivers down spines.
    🩸 Join me as I explore a chilling account from the 19th century, revealing a leaked decomposition fluid that soaked the chapel floor. Legend has it that a dog, in a macabre twist of fate, fulfilled a prophecy made years earlier by Friar William Peto. 🐾 What connection did Peto's warning have with this ominous event, and was it truly a fulfilment of divine judgement?
    👀 Don't miss this intriguing tale of historical mystique and prophecy as we uncover the untold story of Henry VIII's coffin. Hit play now and venture into the shadows of Tudor history! 🏰🔍 #HenryVIII #HistoryMystery #TudorLegends
    I then move on to a happier topic, Valentine's Day in the Tudor period. Did the Tudors celebrate Valentine's Day and what did they do to mark the occasion.
    Happy Valentine's Day!
    The book I mention is Alison Sim's "Pleasures and Pastimes in Tudor England".

    When I saw the title, I immediately thought of Ahab and Jezebel (apparently my parochial school education has seriously stuck with me). I can easily imagine the resonance this would have during the Tudor Era when people were much more aware generally of Old Testament stories than we seem to be today.

      zzudny--As an aging geriatric who was a public school teacher, I can vouch for the "dumbing down" curriculum over the decades. When we teachers objected to the winnowing out of what was once considered--and called--cultural literacy, we were called dinosaurs by the proponents of this. Sad to say, the "Common Core" curriculum is further "dumbing down" the children. For instance, Roman numerals and the manipulation of them in simple math problems are no longer taught. Now, no one today calculates in Roman numerals, BUT...it is an exercise in brain development that paves the way for pre-Algebra when fourth graders get to seventh grade. Furthermore, garden sundials and grandfather clocks use Roman numerals. Worst of all , the early pages of every single college text I ever purchased or saw starts out with Roman numerals. I call "Common Core" the "Least Common Denominator of world-wide education" which has been foisted on the public by Bill Gates and others who want a drone workforce instead of an educated populace.

    • @zzydny
      @zzydny 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@onemercilessming1342I surely agree. One of the very wisest things I was ever told by one of my college professors is that "the value of an education is not to teach us what to think but to teach us HOW to think." We don't truly think if we spend all of our time behind screens (although I admit that I am a bit addicted to historical videos here on YT-- I don't have any TV service so I suppose it evens out). We need so many old-fashioned things like analog clocks and paper maps and, yes, Roman numerals to help inspire the creative mental processes..

    • @annalisette5897
      @annalisette5897 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@onemercilessming1342 I agree. I have done a little political writing and Common Core is a mess. "Modern math" was the problem in my school days, the 1960s. Some of my friends never learned to read because of "look-say" reading. We were supposed to learn about things but not actually learn anything. It was all about "concepts", and phonetics, grammar and rote learning were not allowed to be taught. Thus we learned ABOUT the times tables but did not memorize them. I am thankful my mother taught me to read and write before I entered first grade.

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Anna Morris--In vain did we older teachers try to explain to the proponents of "new math", "whole language", and now "Common Core" that rote learning was NOT harmful (whatever do you do when your calculator battery goes out in the midst of an exam?) and that teaching phonics enabled students to decode polysyllabics instead of trying to memorize the 500,000 plus words in the English language. Spanish, French, Italian, and some other sound-based languages teach phonics, but the crowd from Australia (Joanne Edson's group) who were the proponents of "whole language" refused to heed us. Hence, we now have applicants to universities who have to be put in remedial classes before they can attempt to handle the university's curriculum. I am convinced that our politicians no longer want the populace well-educated. After all, it's far easier to bamboozle the boobs than be accountable to educated voters.

    • @onemercilessming1342
      @onemercilessming1342 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zzydny--I, too, choose not to have commercial television or cable TV. I purchase DVDs (most of them educational ones and many by the BBC). I read books, research online from reliable, reputable sources, and visit libraries and museums. I retired as a teacher after 43 years when I realized that the goal of public education in America was no longer to produce an educated public, but to grind out drones for the workforce of the likes of Bill Gates (who is one of the biggest proponents of "Common Core").

      Sad to think that so many lived, and still live, in that state. There’s a family of kittens under the apartment building I’m in, and I’m trying to find a place to have them taken before they’re not little and cute. They’re black, so less likely to be adopted even as kittens. It’s strange to think of all the progress we’ve made, but we still see this everywhere, unloved animals trying to eek out their livings. Poor things.

      Lol Henry could get freaked out quite easily. I think another reason he turned against Anne Boleyn was because he did not want to take responsibility or full responsibility for the execution of Sir Thomas More.. Henry loved Thomas and Thomas was being stubborn and went with his conscience cuz he didn't want his soul to burn in hell. Sir Thomas More did not blame others for signing the king's oath to save their own lives despite their faith and he didn't think in any way that they would burn in hell or nothing like that by no means. Thomas More was a kind man and you knew that we all need to go with our conscience and that our eternal salvation was gone but that during a lifetime it's all about survival.
      Henry went absolutely bonkers after he had Thomas More executed and that was just one more thing that he could kind of blame on and and say that she whispered in his ear. She did No Such Thing even though she was a bit paranoid about Catherine and Mary.

    Don't know what was used to embalm in Tudor times but the exudate from the coffin must have smelt very appetizing to the dog. Yuk!

    I've heard that Henry's body exploded in his coffin a day or so after he died. That the cause was probably all the infection in his system along with natural gases in the body. Is this true? (Sorry for another gross topic) Hope you & your husband had a nice Valentine's Day! 💞💕💌💋

      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The exploding body idea comes from this very story. Perhaps he wasn't embalmed properly and gases built up causing the body to swell and the lead envelope to break or maybe it was as this source says and the envelope broke open due to the rough journey. Horrible either way!

    Happy Valentine's Day to you, Claire and to your family. (It is still the 13th here in the western U.S.) I give this a thumbs up, despite the beginning subject matter, because everything you do is great and you are teaching us so much. I would have thought Valentine's Day would have been a time for the Tudor court to have masques and celebrations.
    WHY was Henry's burial delayed so long? It seems there were many reasons that should have been apparent, that would have encouraged quick interment. As a comment below notes, he was infected and bloated before he died, not to mention his tremendous weight.
    Dogs were not regularly fed in old times. In some countries even today where dogs are considered unclean it is because dogs have traditionally been scavengers, including scavenging human corpses that were not buried--i.e. executed criminals--or those who were poorly buried. Islam holds this view of dogs for these reasons.
    There were many types of breads and pastries in Tudor times and many dishes were presented like pies. Some of the crusts, like coffin bread, I have read, were not intended to be consumed by human diners. Were those crusts discarded and fed to the dogs? The recipe for coffin bread is similar to homemade dog biscuits today. Slathered with gravy from a meat pie, it would be delicious for a dog.
    I have a two pound fluff ball--few guard hairs and lots of undercoat-- that looks like a tiny fox and feels like he had no bones. It is hard to imagine he would ever do anything nasty. Several years ago I had a border collie who would roll in anything foul and she was in heaven in a cow pasture liberally dotted with fresh cow patties. She would return to camp with her silky, white ruff brownish green and slimy, panting and smiling in triumph. She nearly went crazy during a drought when she found a field full of dried patties and she went from one to another rolling and somersaulting without being able to perfume herself. Dead things were another favourite.

    • @anneboleynfiles
      @anneboleynfiles  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your kind words. Henry VIII's burial wasn't too long after his death by Tudor standards. The body of someone important would lie in state for a while. Sometimes, when I'm researching, I find a person having been left a couple of months! Ew!
      Yes, dogs will be dogs. The smell would have attracted any animals in the vicinity. Two out of our three dogs love rolling in the smelliest stuff they can find on walks. Yuck! If there is bird poo on our terrace there's a little mongrel on her back doing a little dance in it!

    Definitely gross, but fascinating none the less. I wonder if the embalming procedures back then were different or less thorough than more modern times. Other than removing the wet entrails and organs what were the other means / methods of embalming?
    Was He embalmed at all? I would think not since He exploded.

      I have a 60-second history video on her but I will be covering her more as the year goes on.
      Personally, I think she did what she was told and told Henry that Anne was unpopular and not his true wife etc. so she did play a part in Anne's downfall but she was definitely a pawn for the Catholic faction.

    We have apologies for such a horrible day in Tudor history. Mmmmm.............We didn't get any apologies for the horrible day when Thomas Cromwell's execution was botched and butchered, or when some of Henry's wives had their heads chopped off, yet we get an apology for a day when no one was killed or injured. Very strange!

      Well pretty much every day has a bad event which is why my merchandise has the message it has, do you really want me to apologise every video? People are used to execution accounts if they have been watching my channel, but this is a bit different.

    Do you have any information on how embalming was done in the 16th century? I found this: onthetudortrail.com/Blog/2014/10/19/embalming-in-tudor-england/ The references used are cited at the end of the article.

    In present day embalming, the abdomen is trocared, the organs are mushed up and auctioned out. The abdominal cavity is washed out with cavity fluid, to prevent the abdomen from gas buildup and rupture.

      Typo! Suctioned, not auctioned! Darn auto correct!

    Henry VIII's body exploded. His coffin was placed in a crypt under the nave of St George's chapel at Windsor. There is a detailed pencil sketch made the last time the crypt was visited that shows extensive damage to Henry's coffin, probably caused by the bursting of the corpse. Henry VIII was not the only British royal whose cadaver exploded; William the Conquerer also burst open. When Francis Duke of Teck, the father of the future Queen Mary, died in 1900 the coffin bearing his unembalmed remains was placed before the altar in St George's chapel (yes, the same chapel) during the funeral service. A few minutes into the service, a very loud bang was heard in the coffin. It was the sound of the body exploding. A powerful stench pervaded the chapel, so noxious that some of the mourners fled and vomited outside. The coffin was carried below and deposited in one of the many crypts under the chapel. After that incident, the royal family established a rule that all defunct Windsors must be embalmed. As some of you know, last May, Meghan Markle found the air in the chapel malodorous and wanted scented candles burning during her wedding. When I heard that, I wondered if the Teck miasma was still lingering.

      This can also happen in mausoleums. Companies make coffin “diapers” to wrap them up for this purpose.

    What goes around, comes around. Henry deserved the medical problems that he had in later life and perhaps that is why his male heir died young and his seed died out shortly.
