  • The 2020 August Bank Holiday steam up at the Great Western Society's Didcot Railway Centre featured King class 4-6-0 No. 6023 KING EDWARD II, on one of its last appearances in steam before the expiry of its boiler certificate, and new build Saint class 4-6-0 No. 2999 LADY of LEGEND. Although officially a new build locomotive, LADY of LEGEND includes many major components, including the boiler and the frames, from Hall class No. 4942 MAINDY HALL. Several other components, including the whistle, come from some of the actual, long scrapped, Saint class engines themselves.
    Filmed on Saturday 29th August 2020.

    Been there, on a one off visit. Expensive fare (£103 R) from St Leonards WSQ, before 10am week days.

    Great footage of KE2 and 2999 Lady of legend in steam. One loco that would look great at DCRC, 5672 Olton hall/Hogwarts castle.

      Not too sure if the staff and volunteers would be very keen on an ex-Great Western loco that's painted red! Would bring a lot of people through the gates though!
      4920 Dumbleton Hall has recently been purchased and moved to West Coast Railway's depot at Carnforth, Lancashire, and there are (unconfirmed) reports that the chap who owns 'Hogwarts Castle' has bought it to return it to the mainline. So wouldn't be surprised if 5972 doesn't have a 'double' in a few years time.

      Cheers Luke. I enjoy my visits to Didcot. Only problem is, I only visit about once every ten years. First visited on August Bank Holiday 1980, then visited again in the late 80s, then in the year 2000, then for the GWR 175th anniversary in 2010, and then my last visit was on August Bank Holiday 2020, forty years after my first visit. Hope it won't be 2030 before I visit again!

      With classmate 4079 PENDENNIS CASTLE currently being overhauled to main-line standards, I'd be surprised to see 5051 return to steam at least until 4079's main-line certificate expires

    How long is this line?

    • @davidcattell7311
      @davidcattell7311  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Didcot Railway Centre website says that the main demonstration line is just under half a mile long. It doesn't give a distance for the branch line, located on the other side of the site, but would think that must be around a quarter of a mile long.
