I'm David Cattell and I've been interested in railways, particularly steam, since the late 1970's and have been taking videos of them since 1997. I'm also interested in steam road vehicles (traction engines etc...), trams, cars, aircraft and model railways
Victoria Bridge on the preserved Severn Valley Railway
A short compilation video of some of my scenes of the magnificent Victoria Bridge, located south of Arley station in Worcestershire, England, on the preserved Severn Valley Railway.
All of the scenes featuring steam trains were filmed during springtime events on the SVR between 2021 and 2024, and were filmed from the publicly accessible riverbanks, just a short walk from the station and the picturesque village of Upper Arley. The final scene, of a visiting HST set, was filmed from a bridleway overlooking Victoria Bridge, which can be accessed from the road leading down to the river from Button Oak.
At the time of its construction in 1861, Victoria Bridge, with its 200-foot single span, was the longest single-span cast iron bridge in Britain. It has appeared in many television programmes and movies since reopening under preservation in 1974, most notably in the 1978 version of 'The Thirty-Nine Steps', starring Robert Powell, and the 2011 movie 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' starring Robert Downey Jr.
Inspired by the 1940s events held each year on the Severn Valley Railway, and by similar events held annually up and down the UK, I have strong ideas for a WWII set movie plot featuring Victoria Bridge and the Severn Valley branch of the Great Western Railway playing a pivotal role. For more details, and to follow my storyline as it develops, visit the Facebook group 'Lady Jennifer Jay - 1940s all-action heroine' at groups/7591846617588549.

Woah my dad’s in this!
9:59 there you can see me in that train headed by mayflower in this clip
At Highley station? Not my best shot that! Wrong side of the sun for a start! Think I'd had problems getting there that morning. Heavy traffic near home and hold ups in the Bewdley bypass area.
A terrific video! I liked the "scene setting" shots. The "organised chaos' around the Three Horseshoes was great, I love the way the crews were wheeling the engines around as if they were Minis! One thing I miss about living here in France is the lack of road steam. And the standard of restoration & maintenance has certainly moved on since we were last there, they bowl along beautifully, and clearly no more hand painting of many of these engines now.😄
Many thanks. Glad you enjoyed the video. Have got to work on my video of the actual event now. Took hours of footage of that! Particularly enjoyed the beautiful restored Showman's engines and, of course, the heavy haulage playpen!
@@davidcattell7311 Looking forward to Part 2!👍
Superb footage from the eve of the rally. Thanks for your time and dedication.
Many thanks. Was a pity that I didn't have more time to follow them on their journey. I went to the main gate but didn't see many engines return. Good job that I did leave though as it took me more then twice as long as it should have done to get back home up the useless M5 motorway!
Mayse. I am from Brazil.
Beautiful
The Terrier really is going for it!
Beautiful footage! :)
I saw 'Advance" on the Wallis & Stevens, and my first thought went to Rumley.
'Promo sm' 😎
Very well done video David :)
Great video, that's me filming in front of you on the balcony of the Engine House at 15:09!
Many thanks. Thought that the Engine House balcony would be a good place to get a shot of the trains with the river in the background. Had wanted to get a shot with the river in the foreground and the train behind, but wasn't easy to find a suitable location as all of the riverside footpaths were flooded!
@@davidcattell7311 Yes we had the same problem! I usually head south from Hampton Loade station along the footpath, got nearly all the way through the low bit on the Sunday but then had to turn back as it was flooded!
Lovely video I really enjoyed it :)

Thank you, a very interesting tour.
Very nice, very special.
Excellent :)
Thanks for that video! Beautifully filmed and edited. I was on duty on the platform, so it’s great to see it from the other side. Well done!
How about that then first time in 41 years for eardington halt station to be included on the timetable
Best just kept for special events I think. Would soon loose its charm if it was a regular stop plus you’ve got the gradient to consider. Good news is that for this year’s diesel gala, the Hampton Loade shuttle with the Teddy Bear will be calling at Eardington.
@@greatwesternproductions2857is that what they are gonna be doing use a teddy bear with a local train to be stopping at eardington
It is great to see Eardinton Halt reopened even at the moment it is only on special occasions, as a TTI on the SVR of 52 years I can remember the days when Eardington Halt was a regular stopping point, and trains that stopped going North To Bridgnorth would have water boiler level problems and slipping on starting up, but it was always nice to have the extra halt on the line. It nigh on claim to fame was that in the Sir Gerald Nabaro era it nearly became the SVR's Northern terminus hence the incomplete platform on the other side next to the Road exit, when Nabaro was Chairman of the SVR the Bridgnorth Bypass was proposed but instead of fighting it he decided against every one else on the Railway he would close the line North of Eardinton Halt and sell off the Bridgnorth Station site to retailers and make Eardington Halt our Northern Terminus, but the SVR members knew different and stopped him doing this and secured the line to Bridgnorth and the Station bt finding out that the local Councils had to pay for the By Pass Bridge, Sir Gerald Nabaro eventually resigned from the SVR Board and every thing is now History.
Interesting info. If he hadn't been stopped, the SVR could have ended up as successful as one of the other railway projects that Nabaro was connected to: the line to Ilfracombe. 🤫
@@ChrisH-1952 I was a 17 year old TTI then and remember the Railway wasted hard earned money on trying to transform Eardington Halt into a Terminus station, first the Norther Turn out points were too sharp for larger loco's and Erdington Halt is in the middle of no where, it's little hamlet being about 2 miles towards Bridgnorth and he would of Ruined the SVR in it's early days, after the volunteers had gone on strike for a couple of weekends and some one found out it was the council that had to build the bridge,, we breathed a sigh of relief as Nabbaro resigned, the Northern Turn out was eventually removed and he loop was turned into a siding and the rest is History, but it is great to see Eardington Halt open again
@@peterwilliamallen1063 Thanks for the additional info. Excellent.
Torys quite like property speculation and other shady practices.,they've no morals or scruples. Thank goodness he resigned , or someone would have thrown him into the Severn 😊
Very fitting station reopening, well done SVR!
Thank you for sharing. Congratulations!
Thank you very much!
An historic occasion indeed. Well filmed, really enjoyed this one. Cheers and keep up the great work - Alex.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video David, I spy myself at 5:55 in the video and again at 21:17. Kind regards, Jake.
Thanks Jake. Yes. I watched your video (very good too!) and noticed myself filming from the first diesel departure from Butterley as you were filming from outside of the old shed building on the approach to Swanwick Junction.
@@davidcattell7311 Aye that was me. So we must of spoken at the end of the day at Butterley then. 🙂
@@JakeBSteam Yes. That was me. Last shot of the day, as the vintage train left Butterley on its last trip of the day. You're also stood by the fence filming the diesel departing at 4:30.
great video
Interesting document in a nice place ! A pity it's not filmed in full HD...on a sunny day !
Thanks. Hadn't bought the 4K camcorder when I filmed that, unfortunately. Was hoping that it might have become an annual event. Plenty of other locations around there that I would have liked to have filmed at. The old railway level crossing at Jackfield for one.
Lucky people to have such performances........We cannot see them in France !
Cool place ❤
great video
great video it was a good day
Thanks Luke. Certainly was. Both had a good time! First time I'd been on the train to Broadway.
Amazing footage :)
Brilliant film (I really wish you would show at WFM club - one Friday please) Richard :)
Very cool nice share 👍🏻🚂
Wonderful video
Great video, how do you access the foot crossings north of the station? Had a look and can’t find any nearby footpaths linking them
Many thanks. The footpaths to the Bank Farm crossings lead up from the path along the west bank of the river. I think that they can also be accessed from the road from Button Oak as it heads down towards Arley station and also the path that crosses the line immediately to the north of the station platforms. There's also a path that runs along the north side of Borle Brook which passes under the viaduct.
@@davidcattell7311 Thanks for the info! Will come in handy for the upcoming gala
@@Ed_Gilbert If you haven't already, take a look at my video of the 2022 Spring Steam Gala. On the Saturday I filmed at both of the Bank Farm crossings north of Arley. Had only videoed at the northern most crossing before. They're located more or less midway between Arley and Highley stations, so it takes a while to get to them wherever you walk from.
@@davidcattell7311 fair enough, will take a look. Worse case scenario can always stick to bewdley and eardington
I forget the occasion (anniversary of the Flying Scotsman, the train; not the much later locomotive?), but I once wrote to GNER suggesting the temporary adoption of 'teak' scumble on one of their trains and apple green for the loco (not the DVT). I was rather charmed that the suggestion was not met with a 'No' and that it was actually answered, and in a rather intriguing way. Of course it never happened and GNER went back to its containers.
Thank you for taking and sharing. My fault that I cannot attend in person.
Many thanks. The SVR is only a short drive away from my home but I haven't managed to film quite as much of the 2022 'Steam in Lights' as I would have liked.
Hmm, I only just noticed it but panniers do have a certain waddle about them. I guess thomas the tank engine was kinda right.
25:06 I've never seen a traction engine go that fast, especially with the engine not going that fast either
All trying to get a run at the hill. Was a great place from which to watch!
