  • For this video we dig deep into the archive to showcase our favourite collected shots of goods trains which have all been captured across a selection of premier heritage railways in the last 10 years. There is no shortage of locomotives on show in this video compilation with 42 preserved British steam locos showcased. I hope you enjoy the action.

You have to love the Great Central railway. While most heritage lines manage to roster a short goods/freight or even wartime set for a Gala, when you visit the GCR you can see up to four different full length freight sets. Its not uncommon to see two steam freight trains crossing on the double track section and there are very few places in the world where you can see that any more. ❤👍 They really love their wagons at Loughborough. I hope that they are able to run their winter gala in three weeks as its one of the highlights of my year.

Greetings and thanks from an 89 yrold expat in Philadelphia. Your videos are top quality (framing in English countryside, etc) along with your other video posts. Glad there are still people to appreciate steam. I am from '50 to '54 era train spotter, Ian Allen, Reading GWR/SR, platform ticket, Paddington. Basingstoke, Swindon, Guildford, Portsmouth, Patney/Churton/West Lavington, Devizes - all pre-Beeching. Keep up the good work, stimulate the memories !

I love steam trains, even when I was a child. Each train was different and had its own unique sound, like it was talking as it went down the track. My great grandfather was a fireman on the lms line.

Nice to see the ELR make the cut, I live at the Rawtenstall end so it was the railway that started it all for me. Fantastic compilation, if I could give it thumbs up twice, I would!

Truly incredible of steam in action on freight. Top and tail freight at NYMR reminds me of the video I watched of railways in the 60's where an 8F with a big load of freight had four banker engines to climb Lickey Bank. Outstanding highlights of the best of freight on preserved railways :-)

This is brilliant. I would love to see a loco get booked to guest at another railway, both of which are connected to the network, so the loco (main line certified, obviously) can go under its own power, and can take a goods train with it. What a marvel that would be to see on the main line

Brilliant video! Gives a glimpse into the past to show what local freight trips would've looked like in the steam era!

Excellent footage, as usual with your videos, but what I can never understand is why when you see preserved steam "passenger" trains you see a realistic number of carriages in tow and, when it comes to "goods" trains, they are always woefully short and therefore clearly not representative of freight operations as they were ; certainly not from my memory and I am going back to the 1950's.

It's mainly because not enough rolling stock was preserved and even not alot of that is restored

    Couple of Questions.
    1. Are there even anything in those wagons? Or are things actually not delivered and are instead for show?
    2. What's with some trains having two brake vans?

    • @MarshSteamVideosTM

Having a brake van on the front and on the rear saves them having to shunt it to the other end of the train once it gets to the end of the line. It saves a lot of time trying to fit the demonstration goods trains in alongside the usual passenger services.
