    What's so mind blowing is that Apple spending $1b per year to develop their own AI is pocket change. They could probably develop an absolute killer GPT software for all their OS'S if they really wanted to do that.

    • @bruxi78230
      @bruxi78230 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      The number sounds way too low. In 2023 their R&D spend was 30 billion. No way they're only spending 1 billion on AI functionality and since Apple will never say exactly, it's just a really bad guess. Also the 30 billion number is only about 7% of revenue. They are able to spend 20% of revenue if the need arises.

      Be that as it may , if it was me I`d be as a company a bit careful about wanting to be the leader in "killer GPT software" , because as we have seen in quiet a few Chat GPT/AI demonstrations , they do not always get it right at times , and nothing is perfect , especially when we are talking about anything internet related.
      But it will be interesting to see how it all pans out in years to come.

      Just throwing money around isn't always the answer, and Meta's attempt at augmented reality has shown us that. Even though it was a huge sink tank of money, it never panned out and it looks absolutely awful. Apple does have a shitload of cash but that doesn't mean just hiring random engineers will give them what they want. And innovation comes with excellent professionals who need to be carefully picked and tasked. Talent isn't as easy to attain as valuation is.

      its just money, their R&D on AI is simply secretive but not a breakthrough, not even on par with the R&D that google has and especially DARPA and US military black projects regarding AI and quantum computing. Apple's only weapon is marketing and money, tbh. It doesnt have the brains.

    Apple’s iOS is ripe for total automation with so many internal APIs and not to mention Shortcuts. I somehow doubt the claim that they will limit AI updates to new devices. Google announced Gemini Nano will be running on older devices and suddenly Apple won’t! Most devices are more than capable enough to run a 1 or 2Bn parameter LLM.

    • @specy_
      @specy_ 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Well I guess the historical lack of ram in apple devices is somewhat of a driving factor for this decision. Android phones have had a ton of ram since many years, most flagships from 2023 have at least 12, this allows for LLMs to run on even older devices. Older apple devices have something like 3/4gb ram, most already used, so I doubt it would be able to run more than a 700m parameter model

    Why would Apple limit Siri / AI updates to the iPhone 16 when services have become the most important part of their business? Doesn‘t make sense at all. Apple is about the eco system, so all devices including HomePod, Macs, iPhone, iPad need to run such an update. Some specialized on device functions, such as photo enhancements, perhaps, but not such a big overhaul

  • @TaylorSwifty69
    @TaylorSwifty69 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +40

    The reason they are probably limiting this to the iPhone 16 is that the LLM used by Apple will be processed on the device itself. However, it’s very possible that the iPhone 15 Pro will also support this feature since it has been significantly enhanced hardware wise when it comes to AI performance.

    • @BHNative
      @BHNative 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I don't think it's possible for hardware-enabled AI to be processed in the device itself. The processing power needed for that technology is enormous. There'd be no benefit to doing it all in-house, the AI would be just too dumb. I think they're going to put gates in place, but I sincerely doubt it won't be cloud-based.

    • @mianreplicate
      @mianreplicate 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have huge doubts that the LLM is going to be processed on the device because you need tons of power for that to even work. If only the best computers can make good AI replies in seconds, then the iPhone definitely cannot compare.

    • @TaylorSwifty69

      Speaking of timers , I initiated a timer on my google home device recently and away it went no problems , I came back a little while later before the timer was due to go off , and the google home had reverted back to the clock screen , so I asked it how much time was left on my timer , it responded with "you don't have any timers running" (LOL) , then a few minutes later the timer went off , and this crap happens fairly often .

    I have been an iPhone user for about 7 years now, I hold no hope in Siri getting a real update. Even if the new iPhones had a better Siri, I just bought a iPhone 14 Pro Max last year, so this update has to be really, really good to justify me spending another $1k on a phone. I do hope they bring it to the cheaper iPhone 16 and not make it a Pro or Pro Max exclusive so I can "downgrade" my phone in the future.
    I used an integrated OpenAI/Siri shortcut functionality to have "SiriGPT", I never used it. I'm so used to not intentionally trigger Siri, that I accidentally used SiriGPT more than intentional usages like Siri.

      Small language models are getting really good now, its not just Google. Look at Mistral 7B for an impressive open source model. Since this is open source, apple can easily be at least as good by just copying it. A 7B model would already run on a new Iphone, compressed versions of Mistral 7B that are almost as good as the normal one can fit in 4GB.

      Apple has been building that functionality into the A series and M series chips since 2017. That's what the Neural Engine is. Just because Qualcomm invited a bunch of TH-cam tech people on an all-expense paid trip doesn't mean Qcom is ahead. At best next year they will only sell about 15 million Snapdragons with the fancy chips. Apple sells 300 million chips with Neural Engines per year, the even have Neural Engines on the latest watch. Apple is not behind, but rather way ahead.

    they'll probably do a lot of computation on the phone for security reasons, and that's a big reason why I love iphone, if they sell my queries unencrypted to a server and use them to improve the network like chatgpt, I will just stop using siri and consider switching back to android. Yes, it will be less features and slow, and although they might add some cloud-computing they will still need to do a lot of pre-processing on device to ensure that no info is leaked, but it will still be better then what other alternatives are out there, and we should really consider our data privacy on the era of AI, do you REALLY need an AI assistant that does that query you make every few days better then siri at the cost of added vulnerability? Probably not. Also hope that iphone 15 pro will still support the new update, pretty dumb to update it

    If Siri makes an AI software product exclusive to iPhone 16 (with not even acceptable partial support for 1 year old devices), I think that's it for me.
    With Apple strong armed into RCS support, the walled garden is looking more like a prison. Apple has truly become little more than a polished copy cat. I think it's finally time for me to start looking at other platforms for something attempts to be innovative and new.

    As a current iPhone 13 Pro Max user I was heavily considering upgrading to the iPhone 15 Pro Max either by Christmas this year or the beginning of next. However, given what the sources you guys have referenced in this video and what you guys are also saying yourselves about the next iOS update that will only work on the iPhone 16 and its better models, I’m beginning to question whether it’s wise to upgrade now or wait another year for the 16 and its better models to come out because why spend money to upgrade twice when you could just wait a little longer to upgrade once? Are the advancements in the artificial intelligence and text messaging along with the other improvements that they are proposing worth the wait though? Any advice/information on this would be appreciated and welcomed. Thanks. 👍

    • @BHNative
      @BHNative 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would definitely wait as the 13 still offers a great bank for your buck. The only complaint I had about my 13 was the battery, but I'm sure the PM does better at that. If what they're saying is true (I personally think it isn't, because that walled garden would just be too tight to maintain in today's environment), the 16 will definitely be a better option. Not only that, but this is the first time Apple decided to go with titanium, and from the content I've watched, the backs are more fragile due to just how hard the frame is and the phone isn't as durable as its predecessors, even though it apparently feels better in one's hands.
      From another angle, even if we try to find big changes between the 13 and 15 series, most of them were minimal with the exception of the SOS feature (that ideally we wouldn't ever need to use, so...). I would definitely skip the 15. After they improve the titanium idea and give us new stuff that's at least a little bit flashier, then it's a buy, but a 13 PM is still at its prime in my opinion. The chip difference only really matters to extremely demanding tasks and hardly any of us have a need for those. I can't even imagine an app that would actually push it to its limits.
      Also, as an edit, I just bought the 14 PM (here in Brazil, iPhones are even more expensive than in the US, so I'm always a generation behind) and the Dynamic Island concept is pretty cool, but it's not worth switching an iPhone 13 for. If I knew how little things were going to change between my 13 and my 14 Pro Max, I'd have waited another year.

AI is the most important technological development since television. And it's going to have an effect as big as the PC and the internet combined. Because it's plug-and-play with our existing technological infrastructure, its going to hit faster than wildfire.
