@@sonnyankau9239 wrong. On steam they had a 450k all time player peak and the peak of past month was 150k players. For a live action game that's almost a year old those are impressive numbers! They "lost" two thirds of their all time peak playerbase and still have around 100k players regularly wich is still insane. To say helldivers 2 is dead or lost 90% of its PC playerbase is just wrong

IMO the reason it got flubbed was bc of the period of decline and poor balance before the 60 day patch and Sony’s meddling left a poor taste in ppls mouths, and more recently with the DSS project being a bit underwhelming. As cool as the illuminate are and how awesome the game awards announcement and shadow drop was, I imagine if they dropped it a little earlier or the TGAs were somehow later, HD2 would’ve had a better chance Still a great game and definitely deserved the nomination at least, and iirc it won best multiplayer or something so we have that to celebrate
nah, what you guys have to understand is that astrobot isn't JUST a platformer. It's one of those "loveletter" games, it's all about those references and nods to other games (but specifically playstation exclusives, because it is one itself) It's the gaming equivalent of all those mid movies that are about the film industry that always get nominated for an oscar somehow, because there's nothing directors and the like love more than watching movies about themselves. It's masturbatory.

With over 700+ hours clocked in its definitely my Goty. Its far from perfect and had its fair share of rocky moments ,but man is it just plain ole fun. I haven't laughed so hard in co op multiplayer game like this since Left 4 Dead 1/2. In an era where battle royals, hero shooters, and traditional pvp reign supreme its so much fun to play co op shooter with friends/randoms. Destroying waves of bots/bugs and squids while causing mass mayhem and making incredibly cinematic moments.

Helldivers 2: A game I would love to upgrade my PC for, in order to have better framerate, because even at 20fps avg, I'm still enjoying it. Astrobot: The fuck is that? *sniff* Smells like... advertizement for a company that almost ruined HD2 for everyone and still managed to ruin it for quite a few people...
This game has made me feel so many things no other game has even come close to. My favorite mission I ever played was against the Illuminate, and it was such an intense and crazy chaotic experience. I was the last person to evac, no stategems, all teammates dead, one stim, and about 1 minute and a half until evac showed up. Barely made it out, and I remember screaming when I evaced,hands shaking and everything. It was one of the most satisfying and gratifying experiences ever, and I'll never forget it.
Helldivers 2 is just an awesome game, no doubt about it. It was just the other day where I was assaulting a bot Mega Fortress with two randoms. They set up Anti-tank Emplacements up on a mountain nearby and rained hellfire on the bots I marked as I ran inside. It was such a cool experience had I not been gunned down by like 5 Heavy Devastators it would've a perfect movie scene. Every drop I have with either randoms, or friends is just a chaotic and awesome experience. The games had its ups and downs, but I still believe through all the controversy Helldivers deserved at least a nomination. Though I'm not sure about GOTY as I didn't play Astrobot, nor was I aware of it. Either or, I'm stoked to keep playing this awesome game. See you on the battlefield Helldiver.

It's a fun game but it didn't get nominated because it's had a tumultuous history already, balancing issues, issues between the devs and community, the whole PSN debacle, and its monetization system is THE WORST offender on the market. Like seriously? The game is 40 dollars as it is and they paywall all the new content behind warbonds? You guys are giving Astrobot no credit whatsoever and it's irritating to say the least.
Folks still can't handle that something that looks like a kids' game can still be fun and worth giving accolades to when it deserves it. And I say that even tho I got a bias against exclusives winning awards because that's nothing to do with the quality of it.

I dunno if that's changed, but that's largely why, even after Sony screwed the game with the PSN thing and the region lock, the monetization is still considered a good way to do a live service.
@@travis8106 It don't take much time to look into comments, videos, reviews etc on the topic to understand why. The warbonds are cheap (compared to battle passes in most other games). They aren't time limited (wich is a BIG reason for the praises). And you can buy them with the in-game currency you earn by playing without much grinding.

In the beginning of the year I didn't know if should get helldivers 2 and shortly after I forgot about it. But then it went on sale a month ago and I convinced a few friends to get it aswell. I am so glad I bought the game. Really what the industry needs right now, a fun game where you can unlock everything just by playing just like in the old days
Worth to mention, this game is absolute cinema Every moment of gameplay looks astoundingly cinematic, but different from other games it doesn't revoke any of your controls for the sake of looking cinematic, it just looks beautiful all the time while you're playing it. And every moment SOUNDS astoundingly cinematic too because all music is dynamic and shapeshifts exactly into what it needs to be for the situation that you have at hand, especially the extraciton music. The extraction music of this game when you're playing the game with all it's dynamic nature is one of the most incredible gaming and musical experiences you can have The way that they made the "loading screen" be a cutscene where your helldiver is being deployed, is like the game didn't have a cutscene, the game is immersive all the way, there's not a second of the game where immersivity is broken, everything is absolutely in-game When you have a hell situation at hand, 40 seconds to go and the game throws more heavies your way and the violins go crazy like almost mastrubatory, and then you manage to slide a well placed orbital laser or 500kg, clearing a bit of the mess and gaining a breather and the music goes * triumphant little jingle * seamlesly without losing any beat or sounding weird. That's absolute musicality right there, it can't be overstated how GOOD music direction, programming and composition in this game is and most importantly how incredibly coherent it all works. Words can't describe.
I bought a PS5 exclusively to play this. It’s one of my favorite games ever, I’ve never seen a game influence the real world and vice versa like this does. It’s game of the year period, the developers and players have created something very special.
2:54 let’s not pretend here. The developers (aka Joel) ARE deciding the progression of the war. Sure we are the ones that either win or lose MO’s but the developers decide how hard or easy those MO’s are and could even theoretically change its difficulty in the background without telling us. In fact they have to. If they all of a sudden loose a portion of the player base but had planned for a MO to be at such a difficulty that the previous player base could do they would need to modify it in order for it to balance out. At the end of the day it’s a game that they want to keep running and they don’t want via unbalanced MO’s and invasions to loose super earth.

I was thinking. Imagine if I there was a new gamemode called "left behind". You would play as a Diver that was "lost in combat" trying to contact about an attack that is going to happen. You start with with the loadout of choice but no stratagems, you can online use what you find around to fight back and try to send the signal in a random place of the map. The mission would have to parts: 1st is to send the signal. When you do they send a supply somewhere with a new armor and equipment (so you can use stratagems). 2nd escape
I am certain the bots are a subcontractor for some of our equipment, specially the turrents. And dont get me started on the orbital laser, someone needs to look into this.
I love astrobot, and it gives me good feelings when playing through it the first time. No game in recent memory had me instantly fall in love like Helldivers 2 did. I bought it a few weeks after release after seeing some of the hype, not even knowing what the gameplay style was like entirely. As soon as I saw that the game is going on even when you aren't signed on, and just how good and tactical the movement feels, it became my game of the year.
I bought and played this for a little bit when this first came out, and I loved the vibe, but the gameplay didn't quite click for me. I picked it up again this week and my God, everything just fell into place for me and I am _loving_ it.
110% Facts! Was not even remotly interested in this game. Purchased it reluctantly and turned out to be the best game i have played by a long shot in 24. It's definitely my game of the year. I literally purchase this game with God of war ragnarok, BO6 and Motorfest and the latter have had zero hrs played cause everytime i boot up my PS5 i end up just playing Hell divers, its just that good. the industry looks down on shooters. when i was in game dev school, my instructors actively discouraged me from using FPS games like halo ODST and spec ops the line as inspiration for some of my projects and essays. it went so far as instructors actively treating me and my work with contempt because i was interested in these games, and they gave much more time to anyone studying quirky indie RPGs and walking simulators. i remember DOOM being such a brief footnote in one of our lectures on level design. i left that school years ago, and i hope things are different now. but in my experience, this is how the self-aggrandising industry standard people treat shooters. "games are art" i suppose, but all shooters seem to be exempted from that.
I like the update, it was much needed. When all the weapons were nerfed into the ground, I uninstalled and forgot the fun times. The extended period of "No Fun" was what didn't get it a nomination.
the real reason HD2 didn't even get nominated was cause astrobot was an easy pick, no controversy, family friendly platformer with plenty of references to sony IPs, HD2 simply had/has too many controversies like bad patches, crashes, sony account linking ect that despite being an excellent game that managed to course correct from a pretty dire state of balance over fun, it was simply not what the game awards wants as a game of the year, game of the year nominations let alone winners tend to be very easy picks with little to no negative pushback on a large scale, you dont exactly see something like destiny or games like it being nominated when the only thing the public hears about them is how you avoid it like the plague even if the exact same people have thousands of hours and love it deep down there is a possibility that if the sony incident never happened, they simply communicated it better or had the account link as a soft requirement rather than locking you out of something you already payed for it could have been nominated and even won but as you said, awards dont matter even if they would have given it more attention, at the end of the day we love it, it's getting updates and the devs clearly love it
The real reason it wasn't game of the year was because it's primarily a live service multiplayer title. Its very rare to get nominated if you're not singleplayer.

I remember a while ago on one bug mission I had 2 large stalker spawns near each other, map obscured, fog, bug spores, and they were just swarming and ragdolling us from all directions, all the while it's raining bile from who tf knows where. Rough mission, such pain imprinted on my cranium. Being pinned behind a basket sized rock with lasers and rockets flying at you is a bit worse though.
I said this is GOTY already on 8th of february 2024... 630hrs maxed out and still playing... Never cared for any nerfs, buffs nor whatever drama. This game for me day1 was, and still is peak coop gaming, and i dare anyone to find a better game in similar setting, you can't. The weighty tactical epic gameplay loop is like a drug you can't get enough of, the replay value here is just insane. And it will only get better...
I have all the 5 Astrobot games for my young boys. Guess which of the 5 they prefer to play? The first one (Rescue Mission 2018) bc it had multiplyayer and utilized the VR headset 🤷🏽♂️ the latest one is just colorful with more gimmicks. They always revert back to the first one bc its far more fun. HD2 is GOTY in my book!
I love Helldivers. It's the only game I ever feel like playing now. I think it definitely deserved GOTY - Woah, resuplies have turrets now?! - but I also think that Astrobot was so good and also rightly deserved the win. Though I might be a bit bias, when I was younger, I used to play every big game release, but in 2024 I only played 2 games, Helldivers 2 and Astrobot.
Helldiver's two didn't get nominated for GOTY because of the way they handled the PlayStation membership fiasco. Plus the fact that Arrowhead nerfed so much really left a sour taste in everyone's mouth. Games still GOATED, and is a close second on my fav games this year (Space Marine two edges it out for me). Astrobot won GOTY because it was just a great game that brought nothing but joy to people that played it. Playing it made me feel like a kid again, taking me back to when I'd play Super Mario Brothers three endlessly. Astrobot is great, and deserved it's win IMO

This game is amazing i will always love Helldivers in my opinion the game awards is definitely rigged.
In the beginning of the year I didn't know if should get helldivers 2 and shortly after I forgot about it. But then it went on sale a month ago and I convinced a few friends to get it aswell. I am so glad I bought the game. Really what the industry needs right now, a fun game where you can unlock everything just by playing just like in the old days
Worth to mention, this game is absolute cinema
Every moment of gameplay looks astoundingly cinematic, but different from other games it doesn't revoke any of your controls for the sake of looking cinematic, it just looks beautiful all the time while you're playing it.
And every moment SOUNDS astoundingly cinematic too because all music is dynamic and shapeshifts exactly into what it needs to be for the situation that you have at hand, especially the extraciton music. The extraction music of this game when you're playing the game with all it's dynamic nature is one of the most incredible gaming and musical experiences you can have
The way that they made the "loading screen" be a cutscene where your helldiver is being deployed, is like the game didn't have a cutscene, the game is immersive all the way, there's not a second of the game where immersivity is broken, everything is absolutely in-game
When you have a hell situation at hand, 40 seconds to go and the game throws more heavies your way and the violins go crazy like almost mastrubatory, and then you manage to slide a well placed orbital laser or 500kg, clearing a bit of the mess and gaining a breather and the music goes * triumphant little jingle * seamlesly without losing any beat or sounding weird. That's absolute musicality right there, it can't be overstated how GOOD music direction, programming and composition in this game is and most importantly how incredibly coherent it all works. Words can't describe.

I bought a PS5 exclusively to play this. It’s one of my favorite games ever, I’ve never seen a game influence the real world and vice versa like this does. It’s game of the year period, the developers and players have created something very special.
2:54 let’s not pretend here. The developers (aka Joel) ARE deciding the progression of the war.
Sure we are the ones that either win or lose MO’s but the developers decide how hard or easy those MO’s are and could even theoretically change its difficulty in the background without telling us. In fact they have to. If they all of a sudden loose a portion of the player base but had planned for a MO to be at such a difficulty that the previous player base could do they would need to modify it in order for it to balance out.
At the end of the day it’s a game that they want to keep running and they don’t want via unbalanced MO’s and invasions to loose super earth.
Sure I recognize that. But players get to decide what moments are worth memeing and making important. The sheer amount of fan art and clips that came out of Malevelon Creek are a good example
I was thinking. Imagine if I there was a new gamemode called "left behind". You would play as a Diver that was "lost in combat" trying to contact about an attack that is going to happen. You start with with the loadout of choice but no stratagems, you can online use what you find around to fight back and try to send the signal in a random place of the map.
The mission would have to parts:
1st is to send the signal. When you do they send a supply somewhere with a new armor and equipment (so you can use stratagems).
2nd escape
It’d be like Halo Reach’s final mission

I am certain the bots are a subcontractor for some of our equipment, specially the turrents. And dont get me started on the orbital laser, someone needs to look into this.
I love astrobot, and it gives me good feelings when playing through it the first time. No game in recent memory had me instantly fall in love like Helldivers 2 did. I bought it a few weeks after release after seeing some of the hype, not even knowing what the gameplay style was like entirely. As soon as I saw that the game is going on even when you aren't signed on, and just how good and tactical the movement feels, it became my game of the year.
I feel you. It’s a totally different experience compared to anything else.

I bought and played this for a little bit when this first came out, and I loved the vibe, but the gameplay didn't quite click for me. I picked it up again this week and my God, everything just fell into place for me and I am _loving_ it.

110% Facts! Was not even remotly interested in this game. Purchased it reluctantly and turned out to be the best game i have played by a long shot in 24. It's definitely my game of the year. I literally purchase this game with God of war ragnarok, BO6 and Motorfest and the latter have had zero hrs played cause everytime i boot up my PS5 i end up just playing Hell divers, its just that good. I cannot believe i almost passed this game up.

the industry looks down on shooters. when i was in game dev school, my instructors actively discouraged me from using FPS games like halo ODST and spec ops the line as inspiration for some of my projects and essays. it went so far as instructors actively treating me and my work with contempt because i was interested in these games, and they gave much more time to anyone studying quirky indie RPGs and walking simulators. i remember DOOM being such a brief footnote in one of our lectures on level design.
i left that school years ago, and i hope things are different now. but in my experience, this is how the self-aggrandising industry standard people treat shooters. "games are art" i suppose, but all shooters seem to be exempted from that.

I like the update, it was much needed. When all the weapons were nerfed into the ground, I uninstalled and forgot the fun times. The extended period of "No Fun" was what didn't get it a nomination.

the real reason HD2 didn't even get nominated was cause astrobot was an easy pick, no controversy, family friendly platformer with plenty of references to sony IPs, HD2 simply had/has too many controversies like bad patches, crashes, sony account linking ect that despite being an excellent game that managed to course correct from a pretty dire state of balance over fun, it was simply not what the game awards wants as a game of the year, game of the year nominations let alone winners tend to be very easy picks with little to no negative pushback on a large scale, you dont exactly see something like destiny or games like it being nominated when the only thing the public hears about them is how you avoid it like the plague even if the exact same people have thousands of hours and love it deep down
there is a possibility that if the sony incident never happened, they simply communicated it better or had the account link as a soft requirement rather than locking you out of something you already payed for it could have been nominated and even won but as you said, awards dont matter even if they would have given it more attention, at the end of the day we love it, it's getting updates and the devs clearly love it

The real reason it wasn't game of the year was because it's primarily a live service multiplayer title. Its very rare to get nominated if you're not singleplayer.

I remember a while ago on one bug mission I had 2 large stalker spawns near each other, map obscured, fog, bug spores, and they were just swarming and ragdolling us from all directions, all the while it's raining bile from who tf knows where. Rough mission, such pain imprinted on my cranium.
Being pinned behind a basket sized rock with lasers and rockets flying at you is a bit worse though.
If it werent for that astro bot game, i say Black Myth Wukong and Helldivers 2 absolutely would have been the closest one for game of the year

I said this is GOTY already on 8th of february 2024... 630hrs maxed out and still playing... Never cared for any nerfs, buffs nor whatever drama. This game for me day1 was, and still is peak coop gaming, and i dare anyone to find a better game in similar setting, you can't. The weighty tactical epic gameplay loop is like a drug you can't get enough of, the replay value here is just insane. And it will only get better...

I have all the 5 Astrobot games for my young boys. Guess which of the 5 they prefer to play? The first one (Rescue Mission 2018) bc it had multiplyayer and utilized the VR headset 🤷🏽♂️ the latest one is just colorful with more gimmicks. They always revert back to the first one bc its far more fun. HD2 is GOTY in my book!

I love Helldivers. It's the only game I ever feel like playing now. I think it definitely deserved GOTY - Woah, resuplies have turrets now?! - but I also think that Astrobot was so good and also rightly deserved the win. Though I might be a bit bias, when I was younger, I used to play every big game release, but in 2024 I only played 2 games, Helldivers 2 and Astrobot.

Helldiver's two didn't get nominated for GOTY because of the way they handled the PlayStation membership fiasco. Plus the fact that Arrowhead nerfed so much really left a sour taste in everyone's mouth. Games still GOATED, and is a close second on my fav games this year (Space Marine two edges it out for me).
Astrobot won GOTY because it was just a great game that brought nothing but joy to people that played it. Playing it made me feel like a kid again, taking me back to when I'd play Super Mario Brothers three endlessly. Astrobot is great, and deserved it's win IMO
