  • In this Build Series I build the Tamiya 1/48 F-14A Tomcat using out-of-box techniques (because I want to see just how good this kit is).
Part 4 is the final episode and will focus on painting the Tomcat's hi-visibility paint scheme for a VF-84 Jolly Rogers plane. This including tips on painting soft edge cammo, masking and highlighting the panel lines.
    Paints used:
    Tamiya X-2 White
    Tamiya XF-1 Black
    Tamiya XF-2 White
    Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey
    Tamiya XF-22 RLM Grey
    Tamiya XF-57 Buff
    Tamiya XF-69 Nato Black
    Tamiya XF-80 Royal Light Grey
    Washes used:
Mig Ammo Dark Grey and Brown for Green Vehicles
For more about the Mig Ammo Wash - check out my video "Using Mig Ammo Washes for Scale Model Aircraft"
Special Thanks to Richard Le for the Tamiya recipe for Light Gull Grey featured in the video!
Otherwise thanks for watching and check out my blog at www.modelairplanemaker.com

So refreshing to see a piece of art that isn't weathered to death.

I mean... The Jolly Rogers scheme is absolutely done to death... For good reason. It looks incredible. I even had a t-shirt with one of these cats on it when I was in grade 8 or so. It's what I'm gonna do for mine. Though I will be weathering it a bit more than you did here. Forever on that quest to find the perfect weathering balance.

Really nice build series. Seeing the fairly clean "Tamiya catalogue" style finish really brings back memories of what attracted me to modelling when I was a kid, Those catalogues were fantastic inspiration.

It’s nice to see your canopy, matches the rest of the aircraft. I never understood of all the videos and magazines and books I’ve seen that they have super dirty beaded aircraft and super polish, shiny canopies never make sense to me.

The walkway is always on the left side of the aircraft because that's where the Pilot and RIO enter the aircraft from...
You've done a better job than I did on mine 😆😆😆👍👍👍

I like the clean look of the model, so many are way overdone with weathering. There is a sweet spot for weathering that is tough to get so this is a safe way to go.

I think you did not done enough research on tomcats if you think there is so many "overweathered" models 😂😂 wetahered, maybe, overweathered? no such thing.

Ive watched all the videos in this series and love tips, even as a semi seasoned jet modeller, there are things that i found useful (the tire trick). I also like the "clean" look you gave it, as its refreshing from alot of the over weathered kits. As far as the high vis color choice, they are still very much used, low vis are usually reserved per the air wing or squadron commands preference and wartime operations. Vfma-232 red devils in particular often use the bright insignia red and white tails and spine colorways.
Its also funny that you say when ypu were younger and such that vf-84 was aleays the first you would think of, mine was always vfa-2 "bounty hunters" 😊

I want to get two of the Tamiya F14 kits and do a launch dio (1 on the cat, 1 behind the JBD) to depict my two favorite squadrons - VF111 Sundowners and VF51Screaming Eagles - as they were when they were part of CVW15 aboard the USS Carl Vinson.

I was wondering about the back antenna being black because I wasn't paying attention when I separated the parts out for painting 😆...
Now that I see that you painted your's black too I feel better now 👍👍

I just bought the Tamiya 1/48 F14- D version and am keen to do the Tamiya catalogue look, as it looks nice and clean ;) and not over done.

One of the few things from Tamiya that I do not like is their masking tape. I like 3-M Pinstripe Tape. It is very easy to work with and you do not get bleed under the tape. I also use Guerilla green masking tape when I need to cut thin stripes. It adheres better with less bleed! Cheers!

@@ModelAirplaneMaker I want to make a new observation. First let me qualify my painting skills. Most come from doing car repairs, transferred to modeling. I am finding that the tapes I use do not work well with Vallejo or Mission Model paints. They just do not bite onto even well prepared and primed surfaces. I mix my Tamiya paint with Lacquer Thinner. They grab onto the surface beautifully. I have done this wit other acrylic paints as well. However Mission and Vallejo don't mic well with Lacquer Thinner, they thicken. so you must use their recommended thinner, but I find they do not have the adhesion and will lift with a quality tape. I have never had that problem with Tamiya paints thinned with Lacquer Thinner.

Thank you for the great video! I also like the clean Tamiya catalog look to models. You captured that look spot on. If I my ask, what color of gray is the MIG wash? Oh, you can’t have too many Jolly Roger aircraft builds.☠️

Thanks Andrew! The wash is Mig Ammo and the color is Deep Grey. Best stuff out there for panel lines.

WHERE ARE THE PILOT FIGURES !!!!!!!!!! I'm so sick of having to build modern kits with every door, hatch, wheels down, canopy open, (or closed but Empty). kit makers.... PUT PILOT FIGURES BACK IN THE KITS!!!!!!

    • @ScaleHangar182
      @ScaleHangar182 ปีที่แล้ว

Tamiya add pilot figures. That is builders prefference if he wants to use pilots or not. If you dont have any pilot figure in the kit you want to build, get aftermarket one. simple

@@Maxtherocketguy well, I think that is the responsibility of the kit maker. All the monogram/revell 1/48 kits from the 60's-90's had pilot/crew figures included. I had a large stash of 1/32 jet kits stored up but discovered NONE of them had a pilot included. I sold them all and am sticking to only 1/48 where there seems to be are more "pilots" included. I mean really....some if these new kits are 100 bucks or more and don't include the pilot. I find that unacceptable. It's an f'n plastic toy for Gods sake. I'm hoping enough modelers will complain and ALL the kit makers will listen and put them back in. A 3d printer should not be necessary to build an "in flight" version of any jet!!!
