My biology teacher(I graduated this year,fortunately)doesn't know what intersex is. When one of my classmates asked if it's possible for a human to be born as somewhat different from strictly male or female my teacher just went like : " Nope. The human sex is way to complicated system so it's always one or the other, no third option,we're not WoRmS". She just doesn't realise that to be outside of binary sex characteristics you don't have to be able to impregnant and be pregnant at the same time - that is something that really doesn't exist among humans as far as I'm aware but if I'm wrong here then don't be afraid to correct me^^ Well,my country is pretty lgbtq+phobic(I used this word to indicate that any forms of lgbtq+ related phobias co-exist here) so no wonder that biology teacher is so uneducated about biology :P

Somebody skipped genetics.... I have a bio minor, so she's correct that sex determination in humans IS complicated, which is precisely why sometimes things don't go exactly as planned. Rule number one of bio: the rules will be broken at some point

That is very impressive 😁my childhood sweetheart my wife found she was an intersex chimera when she was 4, but around 6 in a half was when she learned more about it. I forget which year it was idk if it was 2007-8 when I had to be around 6-7 years old, and she had to be 11-12 years old, but when my bae told me her intersex condition. From this day, it still fascinates me, and I had also met some intersex people which it is very cool :)
I am a demigirl who uses any pronouns, but nobody really seems to respect that and uses purely she/her bc i am very fem presenting. I am not intersex, but hearing that person use all pronouns for than intersex cockroach made me feel really valid for some reason 🥰

I have known about intersex people for a long time, but I had an insatiable curiosity for biology so that's the main reason really. If you're incredibly interested in a subject, then, with the help of the internet, you end up learning a lot about it.
When that girl mentioned that orchids are used in the intersex community to represent people with androgen insensitivity syndrome, for some reason that made me really happy. I'm a writer, and I have a character who's they/them genderfluid with CAIS, and so I guess seeing that yeah, there are people out there with this thing that I gave my character, made me really happy.

Intersex is a wide and wonderful spectrum. Whether it's a gonadal, genital-related, chemical/hormonal or chromosomal variation, or any other variation, you are valid and you deserve love, and you deserve freedom and bodily autonomy. The cruelest thing anyone can do is strip these rights from you just to make you fit into a box, and you don't deserve that.

6:13 if you’re in a survival situation and you happen to be surrounded by ice or snow, most likely you’re in a very cold environment with no shelter. In this case, one of your biggest priorities is to stay warm. If you’re thirsty and you try to eat raw snow or suck on ice, you’re taking in cold substances, lowering your body’s core temperature. This is no bueno, as you are already in danger of freezing to death. Your best bet, if you can’t light a tree on fire, is to try and find someplace you can create an enclosed shelter, someplace small so your body can work to heat up the small space. Then you can work on warming up some snow or ice to consume so you don’t die of dehydration.
Alternatively, if you’re in a survival situation in a hot environment, you’re going to want to eat ice if you have it, because in that case, you want to cool down your core temperature so you don’t die of heat exhaustion.
Something else I’ve heard before is that the amount of energy it takes your body to melt the ice will actually use more water than you’ll absorb by eating it, so it can actually dehydrate you more than if you were to eat/drink nothing at all

Actually the thing about the orchid being a symbol of intersex is true! This might be a bit TMI (or possibly incorrect) but it's supposedly because the flower is supposedly shaped like breasts and male genitalia at the same time😅. Personally, I see a really cool looking flower. 9:30

I have more than a strong suspicion that I’m intersex (likely chromosomally) but can’t afford a karyotype test. I went through two distinct puberties as a teen: first a pretty average female puberty (I was assigned female at birth) then around age 17 I stopped having regular periods, my voice got deeper (I went from an alto to a tenor in one year) and I started growing facial hair. I don’t know anything for certain and have more pressing health issues than what chromosomes I have. So, for now I live as non-binary (MAYBE intersex?) and try to be happy with that.

Sounds like it could also be NCAH or PCOS, you should go check out the symptoms of those conditions too

I get what your saying, but a close friend of mine is intersex and it's not fun at all for him. Growing up he was treated really terribly by people, and he spent a lot of the time in the hospital. He's told me about discrimination and prejudices against intersex people, especially in the medical community, and it's just terrible.

Still doesn't necessarily mean you're cis, you still differ from what you were raised to believe you are (assuming your parents or doctor placed you into one of the two binary categories) and it's just an added layer of complexity to experience for them. I am not intersex (at least I haven't had any indication that I am) so if I got anything wrong, any intersex person should correct my perisex butt.

I guess my philosophy is that you find the humour in whatever situation you're in regardless of how bad, but that said I haven't really had any problems of the same caliber as other people, like your friend. @@SoularSlothesk I'm also perisex (from what I know), but I'm trans non-binary. Well, modern concept of trans is "someone whose gender is, at least in part, different from what they're as at birth". You're right, in most cases intersex people are forced to live with a binary gender, so I think both intersex and perisex trans people have a lot experiences in common. That way, an AFAB intersex person who's not a woman, for example, would be trans.
Found out a couple weeks ago that the son of my parents friends is actually intersex, so, yeah, they are more common then you think

It's people born with variations in their Reproductive Organs, Chromosomes, and/or hormones that do not fit neatly into traditional Male and Female Binary categories. The Intersex identity is an Intersectional identity that is a part of Disability, Gender, and/or Political identity; though each Intersex individual is different and may not feel their Intersexuality is associated with 1 or more of these.

My periods never really hurt very much, so it varies. Maybe it's worse for that person, but it doesn't mean they're that bad for everyone. It's such a subjective experience, I don't know why so many people want to try to make objective comparisons. You just can't, because the amount periods hurt, if they even do at all, is far from standard.

8:00 Redheads are uncommon across the world, largely because there are huge areas where nearly everyone has black or brown hair (like most of Africa and Asia). If you live somewhere with a lot of white people, especially if a lot of them have Celtic backgrounds, then it's going to be far far more common there than it is worldwide. Meaning, you may well have met many more redheads than intersex people, or many less depending on where you live. Intersex people are relatively evenly distributed across the globe, redheads are anything but.
There are about as many intersex people as there are redheads. That was the point. You absolute dunce.

Im intersex snd youth! I was left intact and im i can actually get pregnant. My semen contains no sperm so unfortunately i can have kids that way. I have irregular periods and i present myself as more masculine though i do identify as non binary/ intersrx and use he/him or she/her pronouns. I didn’t even know till a year and a half ago so this is all super new to me. Im out and prideful about it. But a lot of straight guys ask me if i have virgina*** to have sggs and stuff like that. I do however it’s actually located inside a skin flap thingy very shallow into my anis

Regarding the into at 5:00, there actually are women with XY chromosomes, there is a condition called androgen insensitivity disorder where a genetic xy person does not respond to their body producing testosterone so they still become physically female. You would never know from outer inspection that their vulva did not lead to a uterus, it is usually only found once a woman reaches adulthood without beginning menstruation and is examined by a gynocologist. They usually do not have a uterus or ovaries but where their ovaries should be are sort of testes, not exactly usually called gametes. I don't know that they consider these people intersex because while they lack the ability to reproduce, their external genetalia are not ambiguous. There is an opposide one where babies seem female at birth and then go through male puberty and what look like the labia are actually testes, and usually the clitorous is enlarged but I don't know as much about that one and their genetals are a little more difficult to identify by inspection. There are so many issues about someone's biology that can vary, including having some cells be different than others. It is true that a lot of intersex kids are put through surgery to make their genetals "look" a certain way and I hope that stops, some cases of intersex also involve issues with the bladder or kidneys and the urethra in those cases surgery may be neccesary but I am a proponent for doing as little as possible to help normal health and urination because you don't know what sexual functions you might be ruining by changing things, for example a teenager who is a girl but had no vagina had a vaginaplasty to create one, she basically had a flap of skin that would lubricate when aroused, and afterwards it no longer did, so she regretted it and felt like she had basically had a hole installed for someone to use. Her parents had pushed her to do it because (wanting what they thought was best for her) they worried she wouldn't find love and happiness and a husband having ambigious genitalia. I am glad more people are learning about what intersex actually is.
Yes!! They had a good start but there’s so many more recognized intersex conditions, chromosomal and non chromosomal. I know doctors are trying to recognize PCOS as an intersex condition as well, due to the variations within hormones. Really happy for the awareness and new research. :)

My body produces some more testosterone than it's expected from an someone who have ovaries. It leads to multiple little cysts to form on my ovaries and often it stops periods from happen. It causes some other things like more body hair and some acne. I wish I had a deeper voice, like some people do
Some people are beginning to recognize it but not all. I think it’s best to ask each person with PCOS what they consider identifying as, since everyone feels a bit different.
I have XXX and I have PCOS, so maybe I’m a bad example 😂 Since I consider myself, intersex, regardless of the PCOS or not.
@@laiclaro9100 You don’t have to identify as Intersex if you don’t want to! I think everyone’s experience is different and since there’s more research that needs to be done on PCOS and other intersex conditions. It’s best to just ask person to person how they feel about it.

It's largely the former, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who never speak about it because of the social stigma. To elaborate, most people don't know they're intersex because their biological differences are internal, not external (think the secondary sex characteristics that arise at puberty). So by having the "correct" external anatomy to your assigned-sex-at-birth's, most people just never know and never will, unless something happens (or an expected thing doesn't - like menstruation or male infertility) that is a cause for concern, and GPs, gynaecologists, and other specialised doctors are contacted. Hope that explains it :)

I think it is probably bad to say bc it's like saying you want to be among people who are discriminated against and ignored constantly... even more so than trans/non-binary folk. However, I feel the same way. Somehow, I feel like that would make me _less_ sad/dysphoric abt being (most likely) physically male??? I am not a fetishist or a creep, but I feel like the _only_ person who feels this way.
It's okay to like say it when just expressing the experience of life you wish were having. For example I felt jealous of the person at 3:40..
But it becomes not great to say when adding on "because then like my life would be so much easier, or better" (like how hetero ppl may say they wish they were gay just because they assume it is easier dating that way)
I kinda disagree with the other comment...You aren't saying "I wish I could be apart of a marginalized group" just for the heck of it bring similarly marginalized...you just wish you shared that experience because it may resonate with you. If it does resonate with you more you may want to ask yourself more about why that is.

I'm late but yeah that's pretty bad. Intersex people are systematically oppressed and constantly have to deal with discrimination and sometimes childhood mutilation just because they were born different. Also a lot of them have mild to severe health issues because of it. It's just wishing you were more opressed and it's really weird (coming from an intersex person) imo, especially because we're fetishized 24/7
