A great topic to talk about. The most fun I had with a permadeath mode is Diablo 3 when I was stacking it. Hardcore was introduced in Diablo 2, and has a staple of the series if I remember. If I count LittleBigPlanet 2, a game I was lucky to get the online done before servers went down in may, Acing the base game was fun as well but some of the two final levels in the base game just pissed me off, but I felt like the insanity was over. LBP 3 was the same but it was for a level that was padded out. LBP DLC with trophy support has you beat the DLC with no deaths at all. I do like when they are at least rewarding like LBP 2 you get things to mess with in Create mode.
I had fun making a research about this topic for sure (+adding my personal thoughts of course)! And I did hear about Diablo permadeath, but had no idea that LBP had those as well, that actually sounds like a fun challenge

Also, running away is a viable option in some sections. Last thing is, don't be afraid to reset checkpoints and encounters if you feel like you took too much damage or spent too many resources, makes it harder in the short run, but easier later. As for perma-death, it's easy, play on easy with per-chapter setting and don't rush in, you'll be fine. Great topic and great video again! I haven't played any permadeath mode since they are very rare nowadays and mostly in horror or fps games, both genres I don't really play. So uninformed as I am I would say if done right they are great and give you a feeling of great accomplishment. But like you said they shouldn't be in long games. You should be able to finish the game in around 3 hours in my opinion.
Thank you! And they really do (not that I have a ton of experience as well). I would say that 3 hours is probably the sweet spot to keep you on the edge of your seat and not be overly long :)
I find new releases these days are too easy, and if the game has difficulty settings/permadeath mechanics then there absolutely should be trophies for doing them. Yeah it can be annoying if you get really far into the game and then die, but it makes the reward more satisfying when you unlock that trophy. I played Diablo 3, and my hardcore run character died in Act 4 (out of 5) and I was somewhere around level 50. Just bad RNG with the purple lasers and I got stuck in a corner 😅. Another great permadeath run I did was on Divinity Original Sin, the game actually deletes your save file if you die on the hardest mode, every encounter is tense!
Yeah, I agree, if the developers implemented those modes, might as well give us the reason to play them! And GG on Diablo 3 Divinity, I haven't played them, but can definitely relate to the feeling of dying close to the end of the game on perma-death 😅
@@cassiebarber4669 I think it's the part of their appeal (for me), the adrenaline rush is unlike anything I experienced in gaming before. Same goes for speedrunning trophies, the reason I like them.
Perma-death is brilliant but depends on the type of game, it's amazing for Hades/Super Meat Boy/Binding of Isaac/Dead Cells since they are already difficult games and it ramps it up a notch. But I'm not sure about Max Payne/Wolfenstein as it turns a casual shooter game into an absolutely brutal skill based game - but then again, lots of people are buying it just to see how hard they actually are.
I absolutely agree that it depends on the game, I do see your point about Wolfenstein and Max Payne 3, but I do think that it comes down to your target audience. Maybe I am wrong, but I always though that Wolfenstein was targeting more "hardcore". Not sure I am right, it might be the marketing, but for that audience it makes sense. As for Max Payne 3, New York Minute Hardcore mode was in the series since the beginning, so I get that as well :) I would hate it in TLOU2 if it was needed for the plat and we didn't have the per-chapter option, because this game is way too long for perma-death imo, so in short, like you said, really depends on the game :)
@@IliyaKunin Yeah but I find permadeath and 1hp easier than speedrun trophies tbh, always bothers me that I still dont have dragons dogma platinum when it's one of my favourite games, it's extremely hard to beat and complicated but it didn't stonewall me until the actual speedrun trophy and I gave up, my plan is to go back someday
@@IliyaKunin I guess it's how we are wired, I know I have lots of skill but I know speedruns break me, I can beat bison in sf5 flawless on crushing for 5 rounds but I can't do the speedrun trophy for scott pilgrim that should be easy - like you remember how I struggled wih mercenaries in re8 for like 2 weeks - so hard for me but I can beat furi with no power ups
I guess we all have our strengths and weaknesses, I'll take a speedrun over a hard difficulty or perma-death, although all of them can be fun in my opinion.
I can understand the desire for challenge, but I have to disagree for the case of true perma-death modes like Max Payne 3. One of the biggest challenges with that game, in my experience, is the glitches, crashes, and controls. If a game is expecting perfection from the player, then I, in turn, expect perfection from the game. This means there should be 0 chance of a glitch, crash, faulty hitbox, etc. causing failure. It should feel like it is a test of pure skill, and these types of issues make it more luck-based, which is not good, in my opinion.
I definitely see your point. Max Paine 3 was, well, a pain (pun intended). I did lose a couple of runs to a random bs, so I agree that it was probably not the best example, just the only one I had. That being said, pulling it off was like no other gaming experience I ever had and that is the reason why this was more memorable than most of the other games I played or finished. But like I said, I do agree with you, it was more about luck and determination rather than skill. If it was skill base I probably wouldn't be able to pull this off 😅
@@IliyaKunin Lol. No I think it shows that you have skill and determination and some luck sprinkled in. I didn't mean to diminish your (or others) accomplishments or experience. Kudos to you for sticking with that to get the plat! Just explaining my own point of view regarding those modes. To me they seem a little like a lazy way to make something "hard" without actually having to do anything. Well we just remove the checkpoints and saves! We don't have to code anything or playtest this to make sure that it is fair or that the game works properly on this type of mode. We just make it permadeath and everyone will eat it up! Again, not to dismiss anyone who gets these trophies/achievements. It is still a great personal accomplishment. I just wish more of them were thought through/coded better.
@@dormouse03 Oh, of course, I didn't think for a second that you were trying to diminish it :) I do agree with your points and not going to lie, if they ever release a bug free PS4/PS5 version (not going to happen) I would go for it, but I don't think I would be ok with dealing with the bugs and glitches again.

Starts for those two sections can be found on TH-cam as well.
@@rabjammy9592 found it and saved it mate, huge thank you 🙌
Games missions without checkpoint, that’s the best i can (actually) do !
I think it really depends on the game as well. I never thought I will be able to finish Max Payne 3 as well, but here we are. I think most of the time it's just about not giving up and how much time you are willing to sink into it :)
I think difficulty (Including permadeath) trophies should be put in games as long as theyre not an unfair challenge.
Yeah, exactly! That being said, I would like your opinion, do you think that DMC5 difficulty is fair?🤔
@@IliyaKunin it's a mix to be honest, the difficulty itself is pretty fair but i think the enemy spawns in certain missions are a bit unfair
I don't mind perma death. But I've never played it in any game so I might not like it. I definitely do plan on playing Wolfenstein 2 at some point aswell. Also love that edit at 2:46. your editing has been getting alot better and all of them are unique from each other. Great video as always! 😀
I think that it could be a very fun challenge, as long as you can manage your expectations and not give up! I know you are good enough if you decide to give it a go!
And thanks man, I am still very new to editing and have so much to learn, so I like to have some fun and figure things out!
@@IliyaKunin yeah when I do play Mein Leben. It'll be fun at first but after like a couple more attempts after it'll be annoying and boring. Even worse if you're close to beating the game and you die! And thanks! I know I can, just like you said I can't give up! Editing is definitely fun! Coming up new ideas with editing can be really cool aswell! And there's still plenty other editing ideas you can do! But you will definitely improve overtime :)
@@TheNeonDiablo Yeah probably, it has like 30 minutes of unskippable cutscenes in the first hour or so, so it will probably get old quickly haha
And you are right, I love coming up with ideas while filming and editing! I am just now starting to learn Vegas Effects (After Effects equivalent) and it opens so many opportunities!
@@IliyaKunin Oh Yeah! I heard that there is unskippable cutscenes. That's gonna get boring real quick haha 😂. And that's really cool! Once you learn Vegas Effects. Your editing on your videos will be so much better! 🙂
Think my hardest plat with permadeath has to be outlast 2, beating that game on the hardest difficulty with no saves/checkpoints was a gruelling task
Oh, that's a nice plat to have! Considered it myself for some time, but probably won't happen. GG on beating it!
Permanent death is the worst type of trophy for me right next to Speedrun trophy's
Yeah, fair enough, I know that not every one likes those trophies, especially when they are tacked on.
@@IliyaKunin just the thought of getting so close to the end of the game just to die and have to restart gives me anxiety
@@cassiebarber4669 I think it's the part of their appeal (for me), the adrenaline rush is unlike anything I experienced in gaming before.
Same goes for speedrunning trophies, the reason I like them.
After growing up playing games with permadeath (as that’s all there was), I’m over it & won’t play them again…
Understandable, I think it's better for someone who has the time to put into them.
As for Max Payne 3, New York Minute Hardcore mode was in the series since the beginning, so I get that as well :)
I would hate it in TLOU2 if it was needed for the plat and we didn't have the per-chapter option, because this game is way too long for perma-death imo, so in short, like you said, really depends on the game :)
Not skill just figuring ways to exploit and use tricks
Yeah I like permadeath mode. I also like Mortal Shell's no shell mode, literally walking through the game with 1hp - it's a satisfying platinum.
Oh I bet that was a satisfying plat haha. I think that beating this type of challenge feels so rewarding :)
Really? I always preferred speedruns tbh, but I never attempted Dragons Dogma, so I might be wrong about it
@@IliyaKunin I guess it's how we are wired, I know I have lots of skill but I know speedruns break me, I can beat bison in sf5 flawless on crushing for 5 rounds but I can't do the speedrun trophy for scott pilgrim that should be easy - like you remember how I struggled wih mercenaries in re8 for like 2 weeks - so hard for me but I can beat furi with no power ups
@@dormouse03 Oh, of course, I didn't think for a second that you were trying to diminish it :)
I do agree with your points and not going to lie, if they ever release a bug free PS4/PS5 version (not going to happen) I would go for it, but I don't think I would be ok with dealing with the bugs and glitches again.
@@IliyaKunin Man I'd love that! Max Payne 3 was such a good game otherwise.
Not a big fan of this, I have one permadeath trophy from no mans sky but I tought that was kinda easy and I went for it even if it wasn t part of the platinum, it was in a dlc trophy list. I tried mein leiben but I m not ready for that challange
Totally get that, you need to really commit and sink in a lot of time to get that one 😨
Hi liliya i completed the run One hit you Die in mortal Shell. Now the DLC asking to do it 2 more times with picking all the stuff or getting all abilities in One run 😆😆😆
Damn, that's nice!!! Good luck with the DLC, you did it once, you can do it again :D
if i see a permadeath trophy i'll skip the whole game (just because i no it will piss me off and i'll break the controller)
Totally understandable :)
Cough Wolfenstein 2 cough
@@cassiebarber4669 Haha, like I said in the video, the main reason I didn't play it yet :P
Nah, I'd rather do like a one hit ko, like brutal on Uncharted and yes I have done a Permadeath run on Arkham Origins. It also sucks because sometimes you can literally die because of the game rather than you. Instead of gliding over an electric water in Arkham Origins, my Batman decides to jump into it
Understandable, I think if they are balanced properly they could work, but your preference bro
@@IliyaKunin You made me want to try Wolfenstein, but if it's like CoD where it's just bullshit rather than a challenge, I'm gonna live to regret that LOL
Haha, well I didn't play it myself yet, so don't blame me for it :P
@@IliyaKunin Bro you showed the footage of you getting the plat
Nah man, I played it for just a bit to get the feel for the game and the difficulty, I got the plat for Max Payne 3 and this is the one I showed. Sorry if it wasn't clear in the video.
When I see a permadeath achievement, I say NO!!! Not even trying!
Currently working on a hard mode no vita chamber playthrough of Bioshock 2, and it's perma death... Kinda, because you only need to reload to your last save point after death. Still, it's a good level of challenge and a great game
Good luck with that man! I really need to play Bioshock series, they are so awesome!
I'm not a fan of Perma-Death. It stops me for going for the plat
I get that, to be honest it can deter me as well, I need to be really laser focused on the game to get it done.
The only perma death i can ever play is fortnite
Understandable, fun game!
