I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'VE GOT SAMANTHA BROWN TO BE ON THE PODCAST!!!! I grew up watching her and, yes, I also did think being an adult would look so much like her shows - and, yes, severely disappointed when it didn't. Honestly, her shows inspire my outlook on travel - which is so beautifully reflected in her last statement. Yes to getting to know the locals and seeing the travel destinations through their eyes! I will definitely keep that in mind next time I travel!
I feel like this is the best travel advice I have ever recieved - it's not pretending that there's some "more authentic" experience to be had. I'm Australian so didn't really know who this person was but I'm going to search out her content now
Spot on with the men eating thing!! lol. I love Samantha Browns travel advice to the point I use to watch her on the Home Shopping Networks selling suitcases as her travel advice was so priceless coming from a woman's perspective. I also think the reason I enjoy Disney Adults is because its usually a woman giving advice and feels like hanging out with a friend. Enjoyed todays discussion, Happy New Year!
SAMANTHA BROWN oh my GOODNESS! I used to watch her shows so much when she was on the Travel Channel, and I can't believe I can watch new-to-me episodes of her new stuff on PBS. She's such a warm, gentle presence as a presenter, and it's so wonderful to see her again after so long. On the topic of unsafe places: there's spots in the US and abroad where I just can't go because I'm trans. If I'm lucky someone might think I'm a woman who happens to have a beard and no chest, but if I'm unlucky I could get seriously hurt or worse. I live in New England and going to Burlington is totally in the cards, though!
Vermont is a very queer place, its great up here! Burlington itself can be a bit spendy, but there's a lot to do out in the sticks that's still very friendly.
One of the things we don't realise when we move overseas or love someone from overseas is that a lot of our travel is going to be to do with seeing our people. It's not the worst problem in the world but I empathise with Chelsea on this one, I'd like to use my travel time to go overseas on holiday not just to see fam sometimes.
For real. I moved to Ireland from the US 23 years ago, and visiting family happens once or twice a year, and that's pretty much it, beside brief trips to the UK. I went to Switzerland in 2022 and that was the first time I'd been to a new country in 15 years. Once my PhD is completed, I'd really like to start going new places again.
I just love this!!!!! I love Samantha Brown. I attended a travel convention in LA several years ago and she was the main speaker and to this day, I follow her advice about what to do when you check in at a hotel. She's just so smart and candid and I'm so happy you got her to join you in this episode :)
If she wrote an ebook with questions for locals, I'd buy it! That question about where the security guy gets breakfast is so simple, but I never would have thought about it.
Paris is nice in the off-season. I went for the first time in November and it wasn't any more crowded than any other city I've been to in the US (except for the Louvre & Versailles). She's such a lovely person, what a great guest. Omg, Huntsville, AL?? It's so weird hearing someone laud my city. Lowe Mill is amazing, but housing is quickly becoming less and less affordable. Prices shot up 50-60% in 2020-2021.
Central Amsterdam (as in the Dutch one), has become a giant tourist theme park. Local residents barely go there anymore, unless they have to. Talking about anywhere inside Marnixstraat, the boundary between the old medieval canal network, and suburbs built in the 19th to early 20th centuries.
Loved this interview! I have been watching Samantha Brown since her early days at Travel Channel and was always so inspired by her down to earth approach to traveling. She is a metaphorical classic Chanel dress in a world of fast fashion. And I totally agree about Cambodia, lovely people, lovely food, lovely sites!
Thabbk you for this! What a pleasant surprise. I grew up watching Samantha on The aTravel channel well before we had the Internet to just google things. I always loved the local aspect of her travels.
I feel like people need to stop going to Banff when they come to Alberta. Go to Canmore, it's like a 20 minute drive away with the same scenery and just as cute.
the safety part so true. i live in LA and i feel the same way. living close to other people, where my neighbors can hear me does make me feel more safe. especially when i see families or other women around.
Ahhh I love Samantha Brown! She was my intro to travel as a genre, and it's led me to a lifelong long of not only adventuring but in learning about how everyone else does it too!
Solid convo. Regarding slow travel, I think sometimes people don't have the time. I also think it's worth mentioning many people don't travel bc they can barely afford their rent or don't get much or any vacation.
Oh my! Belize is my favorite country (and I have been to over 30)! It is absolutely amazing - such friendly, warm, nice, happy people, love the mix of cultures who get along with each other (for the most part), beautiful rainforest, coral reef, and other natural areas. Yes, don't go to Belize City - leave as fast as you can. I hope that Samantha Brown can go back some day and see the rest of the country. I hope this doesn't convince anyone to not go.
Amazing video. Loved every minute of it. I grew up watching Samantha Brown so this was awesome. Would love to see more travel videos as well. Thank you!
What a lovely human being. Also, thanks for the shout out for Alabama! I live in Birmingham and haven’t been to Huntsville since I was a kid. I’m now going to plan a little trip!
Ohemgee, the Queen herself! I'm from South Africa and her show was one of the very few US shows that made it to one of our three public TV channels back in the day. I used to watch her religiously as a kid, and I grew up to be a global nomad, and have lived on 5 different continents, in 17 countries so far. Her show reaffirmed to me the innate sense I was born with that women are wild and free and can travel the world solo without limits 🤍
This was great! When I was growing up, we only visited family in Germany. I was only allowed to go there. This year I am going to Northern Ireland and am super excited.
Never heard of Samantha, but I took my husband on a bucket list of hotspots in Europe last spring because, as an American, you have so little PTO that you may never get another chance to even see the MAIN points (the 'A side' as Samantha said) that you don't even care as much about the B side because you're just trying to maximize your vacation. I don't regret it, but you have to budget your time and your money according to your resources.
Best episode ever! From start to finish, it was a joy to watch. Such genuine conversation full of respect for each other and the people/places/cultures you are discussing,
I didn't grow up in the US, so I wasn't familiar with Samantha Brown before this video. It was quite interesting and I like a lot of what she said about actually asking locals for recommendations. But I was a bit sad to hear her answer on how to avoid tourism which is exploitative to locals. As this channel helps more people become get better with finances I think that would be a great topic to know more about and I would love it if you would interview someone to talk specifically about travel in terms of sustainability and not having a negative impact on the local population.
I also thought the same. I've been really curious about this in my own life and found the guest's answer not really exploring the exploitation side of travel.
I use a lacrosse ball to do the self-massage stuff at home, self-myofascial release after traveling is SUCH a good idea! And they take up so little suitcase space!
Chengdu is amazing!!!!! One of my favorite memories of my time living in China. Some of the most delicious food we’ve ever eaten (we just picked places at random honestly). Strongly recommend taking the bus to Leshan to see the giant Buddha carved on the rock and the Han dynasty cave paintings. I was sick as a dog because we went in winter and pollution was so so bad but…worth every second we spent there. And yes the pandas are adorable!
@@almaortega9261possibly. The signage was very damaged when we went (winter of 2015 or so). Yeah I’m pretty sure that they were not actual cave paintings but couldn’t quite find the words to describe it (that’s how sick I was!)
I was fortunate enough to visit Positano in 2015 via Naples and I had the opposite experience...I felt so much more welcome and had such better experiences in positano than Naples. I agree with everything you discussed but just wanted to share...and it was in July FYI
It's so funny that people feel safer in apartments, I grew up in a rural area and never felt more on edge than when I lived in NYC and was surrounded by people. I love a lot of things about city living, but I would have gone insane if I had to hear one more person's music through an apartment wall. Now I live in a village of 150 people in one of the most remote areas of the lower 48 and couldn't be happier.
Being a racial minority, I never felt more fear for my personal safety out in the southern country side in the US. Driving through the small town with my girlfriends to the AirBNB we were staying at, I could feel all eyes on me, and my only thought was like, if one of these men decide to follow us or make a move on us, there's literally no one for miles to come to our rescue.
When i went to NYC I mainly went for Broadway but I did get Cronuts delivered via DoorDash because I wanted one, but didn't want to wait. Did it cost more? Sure, but it saved me so much time and I was able to hit the major museums and go Jet Skiing.
I studied abroad in Italy for a school term in undergrad - between Florence and Rome there's Arezzo. Funny enough I ended up there for a date, but I also went to the local history museum alone and had a fun time learning about the location. (The study abroad was a language/culture immersion so I had extra doors open in terms of navigating non tourist hotspots)
I just want to say that this was absolutely brilliant. I am from the UK so never heard of this lovely lady - and my jaw dropped when she mentioned my home of the Antrim Coast. Thank you for sharing a magical part of Ireland. Her tips were fab and I have been doing a lot of them for a while so I feel very validated now 😂 love!
Love Samantha, I credit her show to my travel lust for all places big and small. I am so saddened that you are so negative about Positano and Capri. ok but outfits and chairs being matchy matchy is adorable
Came here to say this!!!! 💙🤍💙🤍
Twinning ! 😜
it's really easy on the eyes.

I obsessively watched her on the travel channel back in the day, her $40 a day part was brilliant and inspired my travel style.
Was $40 a day not a Rachael Ray show?
Wow, let's give Samantha her props, the original travel vlogger before we even had a name for it!
OMG I LOVE SAMANTHA BROWN! I literally watched her current show on PBS this weekend!!! Incredible to see her across the web-iverse!
I’m going to Northern Ireland and Budapest in 4 days the fact that she suggested those too immediately makes me so excited🎉🎉🎉
As someone unfamiliar with Samantha, this was a delightful conversation to listen to! And I will be watching again to take notes for future travel
Flabbergasted when she mentioned my current city of Huntsville, Al as a travel destination. Love Huntsville but just shocked anyone else would 😂
She's my favorite travel host! Others can frequently seem disrespectful to locals, but she always seems openminded and polite.
I feel like this is the best travel advice I have ever recieved - it's not pretending that there's some "more authentic" experience to be had. I'm Australian so didn't really know who this person was but I'm going to search out her content now
She’s right about Northern Ireland, what a gem
not now
Ladies, this was a lovely hour of programming. THANK YOU.

sad that she can't compete against one guy with a camera

Samantha Brown for the Travel Channel!
Ahh brings me back to the early 2000s!
And she looks the same!
I still get compliments on my Samantha Brown luggage every time I travel. Wonderful to see her!

I would definitely watch the travel show Samantha Brown's B Sides about smaller lesser know cities. Maybe the next PBS spinoff?
I just love this!!!!! I love Samantha Brown. I was obsessed with Samantha Brown's travel shows as a child. I am so excited for this video!
Not sure why you didn’t link to my TH-cam channel!? This is it!
I LOVE SAMANTHA BROWN! I used to watch her all the time when the travel channel was still the travel channel! ❤
Trains! We are so behind. I went to Japan and my eyes were opened to how FAR BEHIND we are here. Sheesh. Love your channel!
Love her!!! Always thought she had the dream job as a kid. She still does!!!
OMG!!! I’ve loved Samantha Brown since Great Hotels was the only show my brother and I could agree on as kids 😂
If she wrote an ebook with questions for locals, I'd buy it! That question about where the security guy gets breakfast is so simple, but I never would have thought about it.

49:25 I live in Huntsville and can confirm that it's relatively cheap and we have lots of artists here! So happy to hear my town being brought up

As someone who was looking into banff but was appalled at the hotel costs, thank you for this recommendation.
This is helpful, thank you!
👀
I'm surprised I haven't come across her shows before, but excited to look into them! Hearing her insight was such a delight!
OMG Samantha is an icon, a legend and she has ALWAYS been the moment. beyond excited.
so excited to watch this! samantha brown and rick steves are my mom and dad.
the safety part so true. i live in LA and i feel the same way. living close to other people, where my neighbors can hear me does make me feel more safe. especially when i see families or other women around.
I’m so excited that you guys got Samantha Brown. This woman was my idol as a child. So excited for this episode.
Oh wow!!! I love Samantha Brown, she was one of my childhood icons!

Great conversation between the two of you. I love her show on PBS and watch it every Saturday.
Such a lovely interview. A big friendly hello to both of you from an admittedly creepy town in the Midwest.
I loved watching her on the travel channel as a kid! So excited to watch this interview.
i love how yall are unintentionally matching with each other and the couch.
Love Samantha Brown. Great episode, questions and answers.

I'm SO glad I'm a subscriber. Samantha was the best guest. I really loved this interview. ❤

Omg Samantha Brown!!! I have been following and watching her like half my life! Great Hotels on Travel Channel!!! She started my travel itch!!!
Nice to see N. Ireland getting a shout out! 😊
Such an amazing and multifaceted interview deserves so many more views! Thank you!
Excellent conversation. Really enjoyed this
I watched her so much when I was younger!!!!
Ahhh Cambodia is also in my top 5! Such an incredible place.
I am a big Samantha Brown Fan! This was a great interview.
Love that you two are almost twinning, outfit wise! :) great minds
Really enjoyed this interview!
Lovely interview. Great to see Samantha again. Will check out her PBS show.
I’m from Rochester and loved hearing you mention the Fingerlakes! Western NY gets such a bad rap sometimes, but there is so much to be enjoyed.
Love Samantha, I credit her show to my travel lust for all places big and small. I am so saddened that you are so negative about Positano and Capri. We went in the off season and had an amazing time there. I'm so excited to watch this later! LOVE Samantha Brown!!!
Thanks for the Montréal and Québec City shout-outs! Yay! ❤
I went to Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour in London when I was 28. Would love to go back when I’m 90….never too old! 😅
I am so excited to listen to this!
Samantha Brown was my childhood! Thank you!
As a Chicagoan we get so much bad press that’s heavily politicized based on “how dangerous” the city is. (It doesn’t make the top 150 most dangerous places….) It’s mostly awful, but it does keep out the weak and keeps prices down.
I live in Hangzhou (just a couple hours away from Shanghai) and we had a great guide that we had in the Yunan region. She lives in Chengdu and is so wonderful. I'd totally recommend her for local guides and catering to what you want).
Samantha had me ready to see the country since I was like 8 years old!
As someone who doesn't know the travel show and just listened to 3/4 of the interview, I left without making some notes. Maybe I overheard some parts? Tipps like not spending too much on fancy restaurants and going to the citys or trying to talk to the locals if there is an opporunity is nothing new... I am a fan but sometimes I wish to get a bit more out of it when every answer seems so washed out.
This was a great interview. I’ll have to check out Samantha’s new show.
Omg Samantha Brown!!!! I'm not big on travel shows (I'm too jealous lol) but I found Samantha Brown's personality so warm and so fun to travel with. What a fun surprise!
i visited rome and unfortunately got covid immediately but tbh it was a really nice experience even being stuck in my airbnb for a week because before that we walked around and had a food tour and the windows of our airbnb were on a nice semi-busy mostly local street lots of stuff to see even there
LEGEND 💜
Wow I could have watched three more hours of this. 😅 I have never heard of her but I definitely will find her PBS show after this!
3 star michellin is worth it if you like food and love the chef
Samantha Brown the OG! 😎 💅🏽
Going to request Chelsea's novel from the library. If we all did, she'd have a pretty great month.
The Eiffel Tower is best if you take the stairs. Then you definitely get to see the tower.
Also, I didn't get to visit the city itself, but I spent some time on the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama, and it was one of the most deeply unpleasant places I've ever been. In a very American, "Here's our smaller highway next to the bigger highway," kind of way.
omg i watched Samantha brown years ago!
I'm definitely going to visit Huntsville Alabama now I have family nearby!
