    There's a dozen or more of these videos on TH-cam, and I was happy I went with this one. Cuts to the chase; doesn't require me to hack my Ryobi charger. $15 trickle charger was worth the investment to get three formerly dead Ryobi lithium batteries in play again.
    Thanks for posting.

    I sometimes try these TH-cam videos to fix things and they very rarely work. However, this time, everything worked perfectly and I know absolutely nothing about electronics! VERY clear instructions and showed me exactly what to do. I have no idea how to actually use a trickle charger or a multimeter but with this video I was able to fix my Ryobi 18 Volt battery and, more importantly, impress my wife with the blinking green light!!! Thanks so much for a great tutorial. I wonder if that process works on other similar batteries too. Keep up the good work. You are the MAN!

    Look at your battery case to see if it offers pos and neg terminal markings. I was able to charge my battery without removing the casing/cover. Worked like a charm... took less than 30secs of holding the clips on the terminals before I plugged it back in to the ryobi charger and it started charging as usual. Thx for the video!

      Yeah, I've repeatedly put them on and off the charger to "rejuvenate", sometimes 10+ times before they start charging. Used to have them not charge all the time and would use that trick... but learned to not run them down till they're dead when in the tools and none go bad anymore.

    Had a Ryobi 18v battery that died and wouldn't charge so I marked it bad and had planned on throwing it away. Before I got around to throwing it away a much newer battery did the same thing. I was thinking I would have to buy a couple of new batteries. I decided to do a search to see if anyone else had the same issue and I came across this video. Being a retired mechanic, I had everything necessary to try this process and it worked great. Took the batteries apart as shown in the video and used a small 12v charger touching the leads to the batter for only 1 minute. Both batteries are now charging great. Thank you for your video!

  • @7SierraTango1
    @7SierraTango1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    this is better than most videos on this platform, but the key problem is that you should have a professional charger like the imax b6ac v2 and attempt to charge each individual cell that makes up the pack to its normal voltage. another thing to keep in mind is that although it might charge to full it could have bad cells which could be contributing to poor life. these individual cells would need to be replaced with ones of the same specs in order to prevent damage. as I said in the beginning this is a much better video than most and should work for many people. I would urge caution to inexperienced people who think that applying voltage is going to solve their problems. I have seen many things that are a safety hazard and many videos don't take safety as a priority. just to let you non electronics savvy people know that it's not so much the voltage that can kill you, but it is the amperage that will do it. most current above 100ma could be lethal! take extreme caution. if you don't feel comfortable, leave it to a professional.

      I have a 1.5ah Ryobi battery that only charges to 2 bars instead of 4. Does that mean there's a bad cell needing to be replaced? So, the method shown here wouldn't help? Thanks.

    Great video. I have four RYOBI "dead" batteries. Your video might just give them a new life. My plan is to use my trickle charger too. It's too bad that RIOBI, and others, don't have a way to prevent this from happening in the first place. But then they won't sell us new batteries thinking ours are trashed. I will be putting this video in my saved video folder.

      it's because the bms has no way to determine if the pack just has a dead cell or if one is actually shot, and when they become overly discharged and the individual cells aren't balanced there's always a risk of overheating and fire, that's the real reason why it happens. just take care of you're batteries, keep them out of temperature extremes and keep them charged up but don't over charge them. most people just use their drill once in a while and don't keep their packs charged. hot and cold don't help either.

      You can use a regular 12v battery or a power supply. The one I used is just a 12v trickle charger 🍻

    What is the trick to removing the screws from the battery? I have been trying to use a Torx 10, and only one screw came out. The others seem too small for a T10, so I tried a T8, and still nothing. It almost seems like there is a little metal post inside the screw that will not allow the screwdriver to sink into the screw. Any ideas?

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      that screw you describe would be a safety torx bit which should be in the screwdriver set

      Thanks for the reply. I didn’t have one, so I used a screw remover bit on my corded drill to get them out. I purchased #4 5/8” metal screws to replace the tamper-proof screws. I was able to get both my batteries working with my trickle charger, so thank you very much!

    my makita battery pack charged 1 times and with 24hrs the battery had drained. So i took apart the battery pack and recharged all the 18650 individually in a separate charger, 4 out of the 10 were .5v and most where 1.4v, so even the ones with .5v were able to charge up to 4.1v now im letting them sit for 48hrs to see how much they drop and hold a charge.

    Old tech but worth trying first. Newer LiIon battery packs have active discharge limiters and pinouts that prevent their going flat but don't prevent charging current from passing to the cells.

    Why do you have to take the cover off the battery? Can't you just attach the alligator clips to the terminals on the stem?

    • @Cyberbeagle1000
      @Cyberbeagle1000 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because you're bypassing the circuit board that controls the charging and has been stopping it from charging. He does say that.

    • @BiggDouggie
      @BiggDouggie 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The terminals at the top are what already read the charge and the circuit board is stopping it from charging in the first place. Bypassing it allows it to charge directly to a battery

    I haven’t read all the comments, but do you think you can do it without taking the battery apart? Meaning hook the trickle charger to the positive and negative leads that would take the charge from the ryobi charger? I wasn’t sure if it was the BMS or the charger causing the issue.

    • @ATEMOFFROAD
      @ATEMOFFROAD  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspected it was the board and not the charger but some say it has worked the way you mentioned it! Also keep in mind you could have a bad cell , this is another reason why you would want to take it apart! Thanks for watching 🍻

    Anyone have fix for this situation...7v on the external battery pack contacts, 19v across the actual internal batteries. The battery indicator only displays one LED and the charger says it's charged. I'm thinking about draining the batteries below 7V Ihen plug back into the charger to see what indication i get. Then maybe try the jump charge. Maybe the circuit board is bad on this one???

    Thankyou for this very helpful vid but the 12v trickle charge didn't work for me though here is an alternative for anyone else stuck with the same issue. I have an 18v 5.0Ah pack that was down to 15v preventing any charge so the 12v would obviously be too low of a kick-start where I found a 19v (3.95A) laptop charger and connected it the same way to the neg and pos for 10mins till it got to about 19.5v then put it back together where I used the original charger to maintain it's nominal value of 20.2v.

    All my new Ryobi tools use a different battery, in that the charger contacts are on the opposite end (and the bottom of) the normal battery insertion port for the tools. How this might effect overcoming a 'dead' battery scenario is a bridge I will cross when I come to it.
