I called Ryobi and they were able to look up the date of manufacture by the S/N. If you lost the receipt or got it as a gift they will replace the battery as long as it's within 3 years of the manufacture date. Also, thanks for the info in this video. I had two batteries and didn't know which I bought when. It turns out the "bad" one is 5 years old. Your trick worked for me :)

"Can Power Ryobi"...or CPR for batteries. Other videos show them drilling into the battery, taking apart a 2nd charged battery, or other unnecessary things, but this was by far the easiest video to follow yet. And although my battery is less than month old (lost my receipt), I'm not paying for shipping to send it to Ryobi warranty to get it replaced. So thank you very much for this video!

I had a Ryobi 18 V battery that sat in my garage for over 18 months that would not take a charge. The "Fix" was fast...easy & safe. I used my 12VDC trickle charger ..held the "+" & the "- " cables to the battery posts for slightly over 2 minutes. I then put the battery into the Ryobi battery charger. The charger "Testing" cycle ran a little longer than normal then it started the charging cycle ! I did not do any disassembly ...I didn't drill any holes !

This worked just as described. Thank you. I believe the problem we had was my wife was in the habit of leaving the battery in the charger and then unplugged the charger. This could cause it to drain the battery dead-dead-dead and here we are.

Worked like a charm! I'm probably stating the obvious, but I think the yellow jumper bypassed the low-voltage chip on the BMS board thus allowing the batteries to take a charge.

FYI - if you have a RC battery charger, using it in NIMH mode in the same manner as the jumpered Ryobi charger will do the same thing, with slightly more predictable results. Just deliver a low (aka, 0.2a) charge for a couple minutes, any you should be good to go. Basically, you're just bypassing the Ryobi battery's built-in charge controller to get it out of "undercharged" status. Also, thanks for the tip. Resurrected my Ryobi battery from the dead.

Yes, this is a safer way to slow charge it up to a usable voltage since you can precisely control the current. I fix quite a few of my batteries from my RC hobbies this way, but definitely a good tip.

You probably saved me about $200 in batteries if this works. All my Ryobi batteries died like this after not being not being charged for a long period of time. I figured the cells cant be bad that quick, and it makes perfect sense that this would work.

@Deidre, I would always if possible have a backup battery for all my power tools. I have the 40v string trimmer and I have 2 batteries. My 4ah battery was fully charged for a road trip. I left it sitting in the back of my truck and it rained which I wasn’t expecting. It is totally dead. Al I can think of is that the water must have shorted across the terminals. So my question is can you do this by contacting the terminals without disassembling it? Does doing it your way bypass a circuit board making this necessary? I know that’s probably a doofus question! Great video. Thanks

Hi Bernardo, here's how to test if the charger is working using a voltmeter. Touch the ground lead (the black lead) on the voltmeter to the negative (or ground) lead on the charger. The voltage output on the voltmeter should be the same as the voltage setting on the charger. If it is not, the charger is malfunctioning and must be replaced. Just a note. No manufacture can void your warranty simply for opening the device. They have to show evidence that you broke the device by opening it. This has been law since the 70’s. Manufactures bank on you not knowing better. The law has been reaffirmed both in court and by the FTC.

Hi Kathy, I would still call Ryobi customer service at 1.800.525.2579 sometimes they will make an exception the first time and send you a replacement battery just give them the approximate date of purchase when asked that's what i did the first time it happened to me. They will even tell you to keep the old battery and then you can fix that one. I have 2 batteries that were in water for 5 days due to a flood. They don’t work as you can imagine. Is there any hope in a case like this or are they e-waste? I have several and I’m not sure if these are under warranty or not. I didn’t register so I’m on my own to either fix or toss.
Hi Jeanie, I would take the battery apart and make sure everything inside is dry and looks okay then test the battery fix if it doesn't work then you haven't lost anything but the time it took to try it. If the inside of the battery looks bad like the internal batteries have bulged I would just recycle them. Sorry for your loss in the flood. For me, using a good working battery and putting positive leads and negative leads on the bad battery, helped to charge it just enough. For some reason it wouldn’t work with just using wires on charger to bad battery.

Your trick worked for me :)
opposite experience here, they wouldn't help me unless I could provide a receipt.

You probably saved me about $200 in batteries if this works. All my Ryobi batteries died like this after not being not being charged for a long period of time. I figured the cells cant be bad that quick, and it makes perfect sense that this would work.
Mitoni, I have fixed several of my own batteries just like this it does void any warranty on the battery but if you forgot to register the warranty or the battery is older than three years this is a great way to put them back to work.

When you put it on the charger, it starts out red, then goes to flashing green while charging. Solid green indicates fully charged.

yeah solid red and green flashing then the battery is charging. only solid green is not charging.
Solid green means nothing if the battery is not working.
That wasn’t 5v it was 0.52v and after next two times you said it’s increasing but it actually gone down to 0.48v 🤷♂️
Thank you! I was able to save two out of three “dead” Ryobi batteries.

Thanks
D, since your battery may possibly have some moisture inside the case I would take it apart to make sure before you try to fix it or charge it.

Hi, my problem is that the charger does not turn on any of my three batteries. Any suggestion? Nice instructional video. Great job! Thank you
Hi Bernardo, here's how to test if the charger is working using a voltmeter.

Pretty much connect leads from one battery plugged into the charger to the dead battery it'll do the same thing

You don't need to take it apart to fix it. Just connect 5v to contacts on the fully assembled battery for a few minutes then slap it on the charger.
