Cheers, Diana, you never cease to amaze me. With German her mother tongue, it seems like this role was literally written for Damrau. wonderful. (crazy costume however!)
Yes, this costume is really funny, indeed. But you can dress her in rags, her voice that cannot be described with words and her superb acting will outshine everything.
As they should. It is possibly the worst, most baffling costume decision for this character ever made. More concerned with being “different” than honoring the character. It’d be like dressing Papageno in a black robe.
overacting? a fantasy story? the "queen of the night" is no real person,so each performer is able to create her own "version" ..and that's a very powerful interpretation
I'll agree with the others here that this dress was quite something. But actually, I like it, well, the color anyway! (Green is my favorite color, so I am a bit biased, but it works for me.) I don't care for the headpiece in this scene, though. Wow! (I do particularly like the headpiece in the Hölle Rache scene.) It's an incredibly different look than the Royal Opera production, where she looks hideously evil (as intended by the costumer), but I kind of like it. What I found a bit hard to take was the tempo of the aria. It was so slooooooow. She still managed to sound amazing, but the tempo was just so much more appropriate during the ROH production. Overall, however, I will listen to or watch any recording of her singing this role anytime! Love her!
Even dressed like Queen of the recycled M&S carrier bags she's exquisite. Seldom has passion enlivened Mozart like the love of this woman for his music. Remember that this acting is seen by most people from around forty foot away, and as the night is orange, green, red and black she's got to jump around to be seen.
This is obviously a spectacular performance, indeed, but she does sound even better (as if that was possible!) in that Covent Garden production. She truly is FIERCE there (David McVicar RULES!) She has a huge voice and was outstanding in Agyptische Helene at the Met. I thought she almost OUTSANG DEBORAH VOIGT in the trio. I think she will turn into a great dramatic coloratura like Dame Joan or Christina Deutekom. Can't wait to see her as both Pamina and the Queen in the same season at the Met.
well yes the costums used for this aria are a bit...eccentrical but that doesn change that Damrau is so good! good at singing and good at acting. A coloratura like that is VERY rare.
if anything she's a green drag queen... with a female soprano's voice... I love this production... i recognize the tenor from Candide... he's adorable! :) Diana is a wonderful colorful (in more ways than one) character as well.
You're absolutely right. Just ignore him... It makes me really sad too that she's stopped singing die Königin, but there's plenty of repertoire she can do, and I'm looking forward to her coming to Spain this April. I hope I'll be able to go and hear her sing!
Brilliant! She's awesome!! This is exactly how I imagine Mozart wanted his Queen of the Night to be (I mean the singing and the acting, not the dress). But why did the audience respond so passively?
Diana Damrau is the best Queen of the Night. I saw her about 2 weeks ago at the Met as Pamina--also very good but I was disappointed to not see her Queen. Might go again next week when she sings Queen in the Taymor production. In the performance featured here, Paul Groves is singing Tamino. His speaking German is terrible.
Is it just me? or did they speed up the beginning of the song/piece to really fast? And HOLY SHIT!! Damrau's costume looks like it can kill the president..I mean COME ON, who comes up with those outfits. Pamina, Papageno, and Papagena had the best outfits.
voice and acting impeccable thanks G.. but the folies bergeres costume !!!!!!!!!!!! for the queen of the night .... what on earth was the costume director thinking of or was it a mix up with papageno's costume ?????
oh. my. gosh. i am absolutely in love with her voice! but what is it with the salzburg festival and weird costumes for the queen of the night? everyone i've seen by that festival is green...
The costume is outrageous but I think the whole production is like that. I also read that Damrau was sick so that impacts her vocal quality, but still impressive.
If only we could all wear acid green gowns like that! I did a production of Little Shop Of Horrors and think we used the same material for our man-eating plant. Lovely, just lovely...
Para APLAUDIRLA UN MES Y CUBRIRLA CON MILLONES DE FLORES!!!!!!!GRAN-DIOSA... FABULOSA....SOBERBIA....DESLUMBRANTE....FASTUOSA....!!!!!GRACIAS DIANA!!!!!!
My fellow peers from the comments below....... I agree with you all....... The Queen of the NIGHT..... NIGHT.....NIGHT....... She's a dark person, nor Evil nor Angelic, but a powerful sorcerer trying to achieve her own purposes. She is a complex and profound Mozartian persona to be played by the soprano, not a character taken off from a Brazilian Carnaval float. The piece in her head..... pleeeease..... looks like somebody spread green cotton candy........Directors, PLEASE understand this!! It's Mozart not a fuckin' Carnaval costume!!!
Even as the queen of broccoli she is absolutely divine.
Agreed except for the broccoli... Romanesco! 🥴
Why why why do so many productions seem to insist on turning the queen of the night into a broccoli??
so that youtube commenters have something negative to comment about
randeringer hahahahaa
This comment gives me life 😂
omg i'm in tears AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAH
Lol my favorite costume of her is on Royal opera house in UK. Glitter+sheer black+ elegance! th-cam.com/video/YuBeBjqKSGQ/w-d-xo.html
The Queen of the Night is supposed to inspire fear, not the need for a salad, but GOD what a voice.
She could be a frightening QON before an audiance of butchers...
she represent nature, venus ... the fallen angel etc...
Dear director: The Queen of the Night is not Papageno.
Brocolino.
And yet another mad house production with poppy veggy costumes ... Thank God there is Diana! She rules!
Brawo Pani Diano !!!
I love how she gets uprooted at the beggining like a newly harvested lettuce! lovely -__-
If I had to wear that costume...I would be that angry, too.
(By the way, Damrau's voice is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!)
Oh, it's very credible alright.
Cheers, Diana, you never cease to amaze me. With German her mother tongue, it seems like this role was literally written for Damrau. wonderful. (crazy costume however!)
Ach mein Gott!! Queen of the night looks like a freaking lettuce! D:
A radioactive lettuce
Mutant broccoli
Yes, this costume is really funny, indeed. But you can dress her in rags, her voice that cannot be described with words and her superb acting will outshine everything.
what do you think about her bathing cap? ;)
Queen of Green
Sorry, but that’s Snoop Dog’s wife
Her Queen will always be epic...
Jose Hill yeah even though they made her look like a walking salad
Psymon Phoenix Flores the set pieces and costumes don’t mean anything to me. It’s how she sings this role as for me it’s all about the music.
It's been 13 years and people are still making fun of her costume on every upload of this clip it's hilarious
As they should. It is possibly the worst, most baffling costume decision for this character ever made. More concerned with being “different” than honoring the character. It’d be like dressing Papageno in a black robe.
Diana Damrau, bravissima! Costume and stage set, absurd.
Damrau performing Queen of the broccoli, how gracious.
I just realized how loud she was for this performance. Great amplification.
She is perfect!!
perfekt!!
a huge broccoli with a gorgeous voice :)nice color by the way really distinct and bold.
So I guess the message is... vegetables are evil? At least Damrau's amazing.
Amazing!!!
Magnificent! Had goosebumps all over my body....
Those are not the colors anyone would associate with the Night, but Damrau is still the Queen!
overacting? a fantasy story? the "queen of the night" is no real person,so each performer is able to create her own "version" ..and that's a very powerful interpretation
She is also the Queen of Nature as well as Night
Paddymusic, thank you very much for uploading this wonder
I'll agree with the others here that this dress was quite something. But actually, I like it, well, the color anyway! (Green is my favorite color, so I am a bit biased, but it works for me.) Diana Damrau is the best queen of the night i ever seen and heard. The Fisher Diskau of the DIVAS !!!!!!!!!!!!
I love how she dips into her chest range on the lowest notes
I think I'm going to have to start designing costumes for these operas...since these people sure aren't doing a good job.
Greens of the night, queen of the broccoli, who cares. She sounds great, end of the story.
Yeah, Diana Damrau - she is the best Queen of the night!
Even dressed like Queen of the recycled M&S carrier bags she's exquisite. Seldom has passion enlivened Mozart like the love of this woman for his music. she had laryngitis while singing in this production, i've heard... i thought she sang marvellously!
Gorgeous voice, hideous costume.
Very...vegetable like, truly.
5:01 she has high hopes for him 😩
Doch.....wunderbar, ich hab' alles genoßen!! Vielen dank.
What a delicious vegetable
whoa
great singing
and nice radioactive dress
Salad + 80's = Damrau's costume.
Badass!
Queen of the Veggies Aria 🥬🥦🥬🥦
well yes the costums used for this aria are a bit...eccentrical but that doesn change that Damrau is so good! good at singing and good at acting. A coloratura like that is VERY rare.
She is the one !!!!!! Magic!
WONDERFUL!What a voice! What a fantasy in her performance even in this slow tempo!GENIAL!
WOW. I have a recording of Damrau's Gilda and it is fabulous as well. This is simply fantastic.
if anything she's a green drag queen... with a female soprano's voice... I love this production... i recognize the tenor from Candide... he's adorable! :) Diana is a wonderful colorful (in more ways than one) character as well.
It's Veggie Tales Live!
I simply luv her,she is gorgeous!
You're absolutely right. Just ignore him... It makes me really sad too that she's stopped singing die Königin, but there's plenty of repertoire she can do, and I'm looking forward to her coming to Spain this April. I hope I'll be able to go and hear her sing!
Look ahead it's the broccoli queen in his broccoli world singing with the voice of a goddess. :D
I did like this comment about a head of broccoli. But Damarau rocks it, like ever!! :D
Stage set and costume design inspired by Star Trek, the original series. Her dress is made out of tribbles.
Brilliant! She's awesome!! This is exactly how I imagine Mozart wanted his Queen of the Night to be (I mean the singing and the acting, not the dress). But why did the audience respond so passively?

Una interpretazione viva, avvincente, naturale. E’ veramente in pena!!
The veggie comments are so hilarious.
She shines despite being Queen of the Broccoli
I love her 😍😍😍
I agree witn you!You are in the right way! and me too. People who doesn't like do not understand about music..
OH that dress!
Actuacion fabulosa, vestuario horrible. Diana MARAVILLOSA!!!
i would have punched the director in the face if she thought of me wearing that..
Devine!
cauliflower dress..... no offence here. Indeed she sang incredibly good and I love this part so so much
Is it just me? or did they speed up the beginning of the song/piece to really fast? And HOLY SHIT!! Damrau's costume looks like it can kill the president..I mean COME ON, who comes up with those outfits. Pamina, Papageno, and Papagena had the best outfits.
Die Oide is a Wahnsinn, singt urguat und spielt auch noch! Das können nicht nicht viele!
she had laryngitis...
and i'm pretty sure it was up to the conductor in end effect...
@K189T hahaha the dress is like the Queen of the lettuces
Broccoli has a dark green color that's more like a head of lettuce
Why does the very beautiful Diana Damrau always end up with the hidious green outfits???
WOW! She's very, very good! Much better than many other available on DVD...
its not JUST an affro its a GREEN affro! :) ahah
voice and acting impeccable thanks G.. but the folies bergeres costume !!!!!!!!!!!! for the queen of the night .... what on earth was the costume director thinking of or was it a mix up with papageno's costume ?????
Brillante
She had laryngitis
now you cant tell me that this WASN'T AMAZING
Perfect!!!!!!!!
I like the dress.
oh. my. gosh. i am absolutely in love with her voice!
but what is it with the salzburg festival and weird costumes for the queen of the night? everyone i've seen by that festival is green...
Damrau, formidable.
The queen of the Lettuce ahahahah
The queen of the night becomes a sea sponge..
Her 2004 Royal Opera House Production performance was the best ever, unbeatable. But this one? Not sure though.
That dress is HIDEOUS. >.<
She. however, is bloody amazing.
I have to agree !
Para APLAUDIRLA UN MES Y CUBRIRLA CON MILLONES DE FLORES!!!!!!!GRAN-DIOSA... FABULOSA....SOBERBIA....DESLUMBRANTE....FASTUOSA....!!!!!GRACIAS DIANA!!!!!!

I suddenly want broccoli
Love her performance. But that hat makes her look like she glued her head on a cauliflower. Anyway, it's a marvelous performance.
They were blinded by the Dress!XD
Diana looks much slimer than she was in 2003...
I love her~~
