    That was the early 1970s. In the noughties the banker would have happily arranged for Frank to get a 200 year mortgage to buy a house, made a quick profit then been nationalised when the whole system collapsed

    It is staggering that Michael Crawford was not first nor even the second choice to play Frank Spencer. I believe first was Ronnie Barker and second Norman Wisdom were both offered the role but turned it down. A young David Jason was also considered for the role before Michael, but when he got the part he definitely made it his own. Genius.

      Nowadays banks in the EU don't WANT you to have a savings account. Because they get 100% of their money for lending via the central bank and don't need the backing of ordinary people with money in their accounts or investments. It's a waste of office time for them. Crazy system.

    I remember going on a waiting list at the Building Society in the early 80s. You had to save a set amount a month and then wait to be called for 'the interview' where they decided whether or not they would lend you money. Interest rates were 15% and they really made you grovel. I worked 2 jobs to pay it off. 18 hour working days 5 days a week. Crazy times but still better than they are now.

    • @peterowen9183
      @peterowen9183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's better than lotto. It's a government-run scheme whereby you 'buy' an amount of premium bonds by investing the money with them. Every month there's a 'draw' (as if it were a raffle) and you might win a prize, anything from £10 to several thousand pounds. So it is a form of gambling, except the beauty of it is, you never lose your money. Everything you invest in premium bonds stays there, and you can take it back out whenever you want. And in the meantime you might win a prize!

      @@andydroid2413 The licence fee only forms part of the BBC's revenue stream. If licence fee payers were covering all of the cost of making programmes across all the tv and radio channels, the fee would be a lot higher. The money they make from the licence fee is supplemented by their other commercial enterprises such as production services and media sales. What is the problem with that?

      @@tjfSIM BBC studios are not accountable to the public unlike The BBC. That's why Graham Norton show is made by BBC studios not the BBC so they don't have to say how much they pay him. Netflicks create some amazing content for less.

      @@andydroid2413 But equally, none of your licence fee goes to BBC studios - it is a self-funding enterprise, so why should they tell you how much he's paid?
