I remember the vibe in the 80’s when this album dropped. People couldn’t believe three white boys could flow like this. They were straight illin!!! Love this whole album.
Extra lucky to have experienced the 70's, 80's AND 90's in real time. Each decade was a total vibe. After 2000, music turned into mush imho. That's why I still listen to The Beastie Boys (15 greatest hits), Evelyn "Champagne" King (15 greatest hits), Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes (17 greatest hits), Tavares (16 greatest hits)... even Rick Springfield (17 Top 40 hits) who, mind you, is still recording and touring at age 74! Go to his concert and you will be ported to the 80's. I experienced this first hand on 8/13/23. Well worth the price of admission!
MID 1995/96 My BeastieBoy loving homie told a GREAT STORY.. He started with "you guys are all about Paul's Boutique but relisten to 'License to ill' and check out the slang & sayings they used & how ahead of their time they were & how many of these slangs & saying you/we only recently started using. LIKE 'Paper' om regards to cash. 'Playing the wall' posted up on wall.. And on & on... This led to us doing exactly that. This also led to my friend Brian listenign to LTI alot and even in his SUV w/ two 12's.. Im Still =Paul''s Boutique FTW....
This must have been around 86’ or 87’, and this was the first hip-hop i ever heard. If you lived in a small town in Texas, you watched these ONE-TIME performances Soul Train, MTV, David Letterman and then they resurface almost 35 later. I never thought id see this again. Thank you for posting!
Condolences to MCA's family and to Adrock and Mike D. Despite that he could not attend, at least they (Beastie Boys) made it into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame with all of the members still alive. Not all recording artitsts and contributors (case point, The Monkees, Whitney Houston, Don Cornelius, etc.) will get that opportunity. God Bless!!!
I remember watching Whitney Houston's body come thru NJ they closed everything down. I got fired bcus my boss didn't believe me. Apparently I should've grown wings and flown to work.
RIP MCA! One of the greatest and funniest things I’ve read about the Beastie Boys is that they just tried to make each other laugh (when writing lyrics). They literally were just having fun with each other and it made them successful.
A friend of the Beastie Boys said in a documentary that after the Beasties first signed with Def Jam, he was walking with Mike D who excitedly talked about how the group was going to blow up, tour around the world and appear on Soul Train. The friend told Mike that none of this would happen. A few months later they were on stage with Don Cornelius.
its not about black people, its not about white people, its all about rap and hip hop. if its dope as fuck, then it doesn't matter what the color of your skin is. no matter what
Why are you lecturing on race ? These were 3 jewish rappers so just let it flow. Oh BTW Prince was pissed at Geffen, Warner Bro all the big jewish music labels for pretty much stealing from the artist work and creativity. Like he said my cassette or record sells for$ 9.99 what % does Prince get off his work? Trust the industry gets the lions share wise up its all about $$$
Actually, they are lip syncing. Occasionally some acts recorded special versions for Soul Train or used remixes. DMC said in his autobiography that Run DMC did this when then appeared on ST. There are a few live performances on Soul Train, mostly in the early 1970's like James Brown, Johnnie Taylor, and The Isley Brothers. Many music shows used lip-syncing because it was cheaper to produce than live. Generally the programs didn't have big budgets, as TV networks didn't take the shows seriously.
dido, i never understood that line. but regardless this performance is hard as fuck. adrock doing the boy whop is a bonus. this and slow and low was my shit.
OLD SCHOOL (I was about to say ''if my mom was alive right now, she' kill me'' since she would warn me not to go wildin' and snatching people's sneakers off when I'd blast this stuff way back in the day)
Crazy story see they lady at the breakdown of the song towards the end in the front of the stage with the red ♥️ hat that's famous Natalyai mom and famous Natalyai went to school and trap with Gucci man the lady with red hat on is waka Flocka mom s cousin she move from Alabama to ATL and told Gucci mom to do the same how they ended up in ATL.... And her the lady with red hat grandson works with Chris Brown now she's still alive as well but yes crazy history so so sooo many people made it from soul train it's amazing
I know the CASSETTE so well that today I can look up the lyrics and I still sing some of the lines wrong. It was definitely ripped from the album and lip-synced. That said, I love seeing this vid. THANKS!
I remember the vibe in the 80’s when this album dropped. People couldn’t believe three white boys could flow like this. They were straight illin!!! Love this whole album.

True, Sly and the family Stone were another act that performed live. One of their best performances actually.
Yeah this is very obviously the album version. It has no variation whatsoever in delivery or overall sound, other than an echo effect.
"I like Bullwinkle, but I don't like Brutus"
@1killah3 Thanks.
This sounds like there's a track playing. If not it's perfect!!!
