I have spent hours and hours on TH-cam and hours and hours reading different books to try to learn and understand this. It has always been so complicated explained. Instead I could spend 10 minutes with you Jo, on a TH-cam video to gain a better understanding. Thanks Jo, for your clear and calm explanation. You are a fantastic teacher. Now I need to look into what else you'd be able to help me with.
Hello 👋 this is so great to hear, much appreciated! You’re welcome 👌 I’ll be doing different theory type videos and I’m interested in what people want help with so if you’ve got a min let me know what you’re interested in 👍😊🎸
A very well explained lesson and worth keeping, especially the end section which although concisely explained too baffled me somewhat but that was probably due to my own tiredness creeping in: Good stuff.
That’s a nice easy way of explaining it, I didn’t have the same experience, my experience was without explanation - just “this is it”. I enjoyed this and have actually found how to form diminished chords rather than just accepting the shape on TAB!
Nice, thanks👌 I loved the process of starting to understand how to work all these things out. Especially on the guitar as well being able to work out chord shapes. It gave me a whole new appreciation for music and that’s priceless 🎸😀
Even though I know everything you talk about in this video as an intermediate piano player, I can see this is definitely an excellent tutorial for any beginner. You have awesome teaching skills. And your graphics really make it easy to learn.
Thank you very much, I will take my notebook and write and learn everything you explained in this video. Watching and searching for a month even started getting stressed. Finally I found you my dear. Love you ❤❤❤
Ah fantastic! I’m made up you found this video 😊 it can be stressful when you don’t quite find the right info you’re looking for. Thank you very much, you’re so welcome 😊🎸❤️
Hey there! It's been a minute. Good lesson, Again. I find as I was geting into it, that this is something I already know. And I have to take this a a good sign. So what's the problem then? It's notes on the fretboard. This is essential and I have just not wanted to go there. And it really just comes down to practice and discipline. Which you, and the greats, obviously have.
Thank you very much 👍😊 how are you getting on? It’s true. All of the above. It only becomes easier when you’re in a place when you’re interested in it and then it’s about repetition. I was not interested in theory for years when I started playing guitar. Only riffs and pedals. Once I got interested though it became mind blowing and REALLY useful! 🎸😊
@@jobywaterguitartuition What's cool here, is there is a point in your recent triads lesson, that you actually pause and emphasize that knowing the fretboard is essential. And I really think - for me - that I need somebody to practice with. Somebody who is better and can put up with me. I THINK THAT MAY APPLY TO LIFE TOO! My best to you and yours this holiday season.
Hi Jo just found this having watched a lot of Ricky Cominsky lessons over the last few months, This is more than helpful, this will be the first video I will actually download and keep to study and write out the chords, thank you thank you ❤
Hiya 👋 thanks for this😊. I’m really happy you’ve found it so useful. I’ve seen some of @rickysguitar excellent videos too, TOP quality 👌 You’re very welcome!
The way I remember chord recipes, you just need to know about thirds, there are 2 types of thirds, a major third (M) and a minor third (m). A major chord will be a major third, followed by a minor third (Mm), a minor chord will be a minor third, followed by a major third (mM), a diminished chord will be a minor third, followed by another minor third (mm), and an augmented chord will be a major third, followed by another major third (MM). The way I count through chromatic scale, if my thumb is root note, my little finger will be the major third, and my ring finger, the minor third.
Cheers for sharing 😊 You’re right it is about the different thirds stacked to create the variety of chord qualities. This lesson is a bit prior to that level. Not everyone understands thirds and it can get terminology heavy. Once people have some foundations in place moving onto 3rds combinations is the next step 👍😊🎸
DAMN, you are a good teacher! (I'm OLD and stuck in my "ways" of playing by "ear"... so, I actually "know" all this stuff, but NOT to where I am able to talk/say what I am thinking! ...if you know what I mean!) I know that I have an "instinct" of "theory"! But, I am one of those who (wrongfully?) deliberately "blanks-out" when an instructor gets into the "theory" and "mathmatics/formulae" lol! MY MIND just can't "grok" in that way! ...I'm different! I am smart enough to KNOW what teacher is saying is TRUE! But, I'm just culturally (?) adverse to learning it. ...but, Jo You are holding my attention more-so than most music instructors!
Hello, dear Joe, understood absolutely everything, except diminished Fifth, very sorry, what does it mean?sorry for my taking your time and my stupidness
Diminished 5th chord is a chord with a b3 and a b5 in it. If possible could you explain what aspect of it you didn’t understand so I can better help you?
when teachers explain the theory of music no one says about diminished, according your scheme I constructed only one BDF diminished chord. Am I right? Very sorry I am not native speaker, it's the reason. I try not bother you again.God bless you. Thanks a lot
@Манзура-с2ф that’s right. There’s only one diminished chord in a major key. The vii chord in C Major is the B diminished chord. People also call the diminished chord a ‘minor b5’. Have you heard that before? I’m happy to answer your questions it’s just not always easy with only a bit of information about what you know. I hope this helps a bit?

Took me like twenty years of just playing songs on guitar to realize this. I wish I had YT in the Eighties.
YT is pretty good isn’t it 😊

Thank you 🙏 😊 glad you got value from the lesson.
Let me know if the penny drops with the end bit. I’m interested to hear how it lands with people 👍
Thank you. I have a better understanding of scales and chords and their relationship.
That’s very good news 😊 glad the vid was helpful 👌

@@jobywaterguitartuition I think you have got it "going on"! (I'm just an old hack!) Love ya!
