    There will never be anything built by man more beautiful than the ocean liners from 1890 to 1920. So much love went into building these ships.

    Great list! For me Olympic will always be tops, something about her just fascinates, but your points are great, particularly Titanic’s being something of a gateway ocean liner.

    This guys brave, he has Mauretania higher than Lusitania, he has the QM2 and the Queen Elizabeth on his list instead of the first Queen Mary. Amazing video man, and I can't wait for the next Britannic video.

    I've spent most of the last 50 years loving ocean liners. Interestingly, my favorites haven't changed much over the years. I started with a list of more than 50 ships, so narrowing it down to 10 was just impossible. Below are my 20 favorite ships in no particular order until the end, where I was able to name my top 5. (FYI, I have a special place in my heart from 3-stackers.)
    Belgenland - the first 3S on my list and the largest ship to ever fly the Belgian flag (I'm part Belgian); though her career was short, she was lovely
    Île de France - she started life as a 3S and had the longest and most honorable career of any French liner; truly the grand dame of the fleet
    Normandie - I will begrudgingly admit that she was one of the most beautiful ships ever built ... but she was designed for a world that only existed in the courts of royal France and thus was a failure
    Bremen - she introduced an entirely new look for ships and was, IMHO much prettier than her sister.
    Cap Arcona - another 3S and one that was certainly lovely inside and out
    Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse - IMHO the first truly "great" liner and one of my first loves
    Rotterdam - she's the only ocean liner I've ever been aboard (be sure to book a room when you're in Rotterdam as she's a wonderful hotel), and she is wonderful!
    Gripsholm - the Swedes have always had pretty, if smaller, ocean liners and she's the prettiest
    Mauretania - what list could leave off the Maury ... the whole world loved this ship
    Mauretania II - often overlooked, the Maury II was a beautiful ship that always struck a chord with me
    Olympic - the real heroine of the old White Star Line and one of my first loves
    Queen Mary - the most famous of all 3S and a truly great lady who also won my heart early on and has never left
    America (1939) - I find her so much more appealing than the United States ... she was perfectly proportioned, and prettier inside
    Top 5
    Imperator / Berengaria - the Ballin trio of 3S liners are, IMHO, the greatest ships ever built. I could not pick one over the other
    Leviathan / Vaterland - ""
    Bismarck / Majestic - ""
    Aquitania - hands down, my favorite British-built ship
    Nieuw Amsterdam - the perfect ship ... though a 2S, I don't think a more beautiful ship was ever built
    Honorable Mentions
    Vaterland - the 1940 HAPAG ship that was bombed after launching ... this is the "what if" ship that I most wonder about; I think she was beautiful and would have had a very nice appeal if only ...
    Leonardo da Vinci - It's often been said that a ship should look as good when she leaves as she does when she arrives; well no ship has a nicer "rear" that the Leonardo da Vinci ... she's the Sophia Loren of ocean liners.

    What you said about Titanic really reasonated, I remember when I first heard about it, it was when it arrives in NYC in Ghostbusters II. I must have been about 6, at that point I totally lost interest in the film and convinced my parents to tell me everything they knew about the subject, totally fascinated from that moment.

      How is Oceanic ||| better than all the other ships and ones you haven't mentioned, she is beautiful and would have been revolutionary, but that's it, everything else you can just dream of, it's like saying one of your favorite ocean liners is one because you created a story of her beautiful life in your head, she's a nice amazing ship but she is no way better than Olympic, Brittanic, Normandie or any more because she never even existed, no true story

      @@PR1NC345 I agree. This was 2 years back when I saw the painting of oceanic III and got too attached to it. Now when I see the renders I feel it was ought to be very similar to the queen mary. You're right, maybe it couldn't have surpassed the likes of Normandie & Queen Mary.

    My favorite era of ocean liner design is absolutely the 1930s. I prefer the art deco style and I love the graceful curve of the superstructures. Just the fact that for every year from 1935 and 1938, an iconic liner entered service: SS Normandie, RMS Queen Mary, SS Nieuw Amsterdam, RMS Queen Elizabeth. It was the golden age of the ocean liners, between two world wars and still long before transatlantic air travel precipitated the end of it all.

  • @mattharwood4413
    @mattharwood4413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    This is fantastic content. I agree with the previous comments about your editing etc.. Very professional. I also love that you go your own way with your ship ratings! (I'm a Normandie is #1 guy! LOL!) I am 60 years old and I too got started with the Titanic after its discovery. I was in my 20's then. It also helped that I lived near the Queen Mary (still kind of do). So I got to see one of these beauties for real. What finally got me in your video was how you feel about the Maury. I can see why and it's so sweet. Love the hotel vs palace analogy. Keep going sir. You've got some of us hooked!

    • @Kaidhicksii
      @Kaidhicksii 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed. I kind of prefer Maury over Lusi for that exact reason. While Lusi feels like the more stunning of the two, I take one look at Maury's interiors, and it feels like I'm home. I guess that's just the way I feel with dark wooden interiors. 😅

  • @zammich3649
    @zammich3649 ปีที่แล้ว

    I totally agree about Mauretania. She's a beautiful ship on the outside with a striking image, and I like pretty much all of her changes compared to the Lusitania. The cowl vents being so numerous is slightly unfortunate, but it does make her easy to identify and gives her a very nautical. Her interior might not be as "palatial" as the Lusitania, but tbh I've never been a particular fan of white interiors, while I *adore* wood textures and earth tones.
    Some of my tops are probably Maury, Olympic, Empress of Britain, Mauretania II (not the best at anything but a solidly good, accessible ship on all counts), and Keiser Wilhelm der Grosse off the top of my head, although I'll need to dive back in to refresh myself on some of the ships I've been learning about.

  • @Kaidhicksii
    @Kaidhicksii 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Finally got around to watching the remake. While it's been a while since I've seen your last video, I can tell that your list has changed in quite a number of ways. And at the same time, not at all. It appears to me you are similar to Big Old Boats, in that just as he has a thing for weird-ass funnels, so you also seem to have a thing for weird-ass designs. Mauretania's giant vents over Lusitania's more streamlined and cleaner look? Aquitania's boxier exterior being the pinnacle of the four-funneled liners (although you're far from the first person I've seen say that, so I guess it's not as important)? I could go on and on, but I'll just leave it at this. You are a very interesting fellow. 🤣
    Very much enjoyed your new take on the liners. Honestly it is practically a completely different video, considering the way you rank them now is different from last time. As for my take, I won't say anything I haven't said before, as my top 3 haven't changed. Instead, I'm pleased to say that the France/Norway is now officially my #4. I absolutely love that ship for reasons that I will not detail, lest I write another essay. But I'm pretty sure you can guess them. Happy New Year mate. Hope 2022 is good to you. :) 👍🎆🎇

    Fantastic Video !! Written script, Narration, Chosen photos and films all excellent ! Even the choice and presence of background music beautiful. I agree with all your choices and the reasoning behind them!! I’ve always loved the exterior of the original Queen Elizabeth! So powerful and impressive. Yes , Mauritania’s exterior is superior to Lusitania. Although I prefer the look of the First Class Dining Salon on Lusitania ( especially the design and decorations of its dome ) the rest of the interiors of Mauritania are the Better of the two. But , ever since I was a young man, my heart will always belong to the Olympic Class! The exterior styling is so incredibly sleek and elegant. Almost Yacht like in appearance!❤️! I love all three sisters equally. Can hardly wait to see your videos on Brittanic ! I wish more artists would show how she would have looked in her passenger service colors! It would have been AMAZING !!! I’ve got to play devils advocate and ask your opinion on the “ Gigantic “ - “ Brittanic “ debate? I’m personally on “ Team Gigantic “ side of the story ! Anyway thank you for all the great work!! Kudos to you!

    The Titanic disaster is the foundation for all modern maritime laws seen on all new passenger ships. Without the Titanic disaster, who knows how maritime safety laws would be. The Titanic disaster took lives, but saved many lives as it mandated requirement of passenger ships to have more lifeboats.

    Thank You for loving and appreciating Ocean Liners and Battleships.
    and above all, thank you for being a "Yank" and NOT Including S.S United States on Your list, let alone in the top 3. I was surprised it wasn't placed at No.1 and to hear yet another spiel about her speed, too little too late. I'd personally appreciate the S.S United states if she was a 1930's liner released at the same time as the Queen Mary and the Normandie, however aviation was too far into its accomplishments at this stage to bring about such and Ocean Liner (Like the S.S France, God its a gorgeous ship, of erection casuing proportions, but unfortunately, it was just ''grabbing at straws'' and essentially holding onto the past). I never really saw the appeal, nor truly marvelled at United States, but perhaps that's because Mauritania has my heart and I personally am a Pre 1930's Ocean Liner Enthusiast.

    My top 10 list
    1.Lusitania-i can say nothing, just like you said its indescribable,i cant say a word,She is one the most greatest and most amazing ocean liners. Her first class feels like you are in heaven.
    She has a different vibe to the Olympic class.Which makes her unique.Shes luxurious even on 3rd class, every wall and chair has details and decoration,Shes fast, and personally i like her exterior its good looking and less boxy than ships coming next in 1910s and 20s,especially if cunard didnt remove the white stripe.Although short career at least she served 200 more voyages than the titanic ever never completed. But i think she should deserve"Ship Beautiful" than Aquitania.Although her staircase is not that luxurious beacuse of cunard officials wanting to ruin the staircase and not follow James Miller's plan,if im the architect of the ship,i would change it.
    2.Mauretania-My second Favorite, yes i like her tall appearance and i like her bridge more than Lusitania, the cowl vents looks good on her, shes also luxurious as Lusitania,I also think shes the first Art deco, her lounge has paintings.and she is so cool on her HMT livery along with Olympic fighting on the war.Met a sad and undeserving fate,She is one of the safest and finest
    3.Britannic-She looks cute on her hospital livery,People hate the gantry davits,to me it looks cool on her, such a shame she sunk,The interior is stunning but i dont liked when they removed of having a cafe parisien, but still her interior is luxurious,She looks awesome if she became an ocean liner
    4.Aquitania-Just like you said i like her boxy shape but the funnels and the bow make her have a shape,Now the interior is a different story,Very grand and very Lavish its beautiful, its also amazing that she survived both wars,People hate her exterior but to me i like it because aquitania prioritized interior and comfort over shape and exterior drama.Shes truly a great ship
    5.Olympic-The old reliable,The real unsinkable of her class,Stunning interiors, good exterior. Shes truly great she survived WW1 along with Mauretania. She lost both of her sisters and she met a bad fate.Forget what happened in 1935.Just remember what she is and what she did.
    6.Nieuw Amsterdam-I know many dutch ships are unknown and underrated @Big Old Boats already said what im going to say,for those who dont know,ok i will say
    Shes is The Ship of Peace and she may not be large or speed but she is a good example of a fine and comfortable ship, everything is good on her both exterior and interior, she may not be much luxurious, big, and fast like british french or german ships but she proved that comfort and design is better than Speed Size and Interior Drama on british ships. She would have a great life if airplanes didnt come
    7.QM2-Like the Normandie,Interior is too much,But beautiful,She really looks like a cruise ship, but with the cunard funnels and cunard branding as you said she looks a true ocean liner she indeed looks cute and awesome.sadly that she is lonely
    8.QM and QE-I pick them both, :)
    One of the most beautiful ships ive seen, great exterior and interior i like their differences and i like how they are both queens. The QM may have a good condition now but on QE,
    Lets not talk about that its just sad
    But they were great ships are shortened the war within a year,Thats awesome!
    9.Imperator-She is underrated as well as many german ships.I dont get it why,but maybe overshadowed by British ships.Ok i will explain,She was the first ship to have beaten both size and luxury of Olympic Class (although the community dont believe it) She looks good in 1913 but the funnel refit and the removal of the eagle figure made her look even smaller and less greater,Her 1913 look is perfect with tall funnels making her look inviting and the eagle figure gaves the vibe of a proud german symbol, and makes her look great and a representation of her country,Inside she is stunning And so luxurious and had beaten Olympic Class in my opinion,Truly a palace,I can say she was one of the most greatest ships although became Berengaria she is still great just with different colors.Such a shame she was just scrapped she didnt deserved that
    10.Carpathia-Many people unfortunately forgot her as The Hero of Titanic. She deserves a spot. She is only known as Hero of Titanic but the interior of her is a different story she may not have many pictures but she is luxurious.
    Mention:RMS Titanic-im a titanic fan last 2 years ago just like you her story made a big impact.Im not a fan of her anymore. She is identical to olympic, but her story is the most interesting. The reason i know ocean liners is beacuse of Titanic,I watch the movie when i was 9 years old i already knew the mauretania beacuse "Rose" mentioned her and i searched Mauretania, thats the reason i know ocean liners. The community is toxic but dont mind the community

    All three White Star titans in the top 5.
    Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new fandom member.
    Jokes aside, I would’ve put Carpathia somewhere on the list not only for her humble and reliable service but also for her spotlight hour as Titanic’s heroine. The largest of the Saxonia trio, Carpathia was built as a mixed cargo/passenger ship for the Liverpool-Boston run. While not luxurious by any means, she was one of many workhorses in Cunard’s fleet and served her clients almost as faithfully as Old Reliable Olympic.

    Great list, I have my own personal list with SS United States being my favorite overall. She so pretty to me and it's such a shame that she is in such a deprecated condition.

    This is a little bit weird. Most people are interested in either the Titanic or the Olympic “mostly it’s the Titanic”, and I can tell you this the Britannic is “or what would’ve been called the Gigantic” is always seen as the other of three ships nobody cares about. Even if Olympic was spared the breakers and preserved as a museum, it most likely would’ve been a museum for its Sister Titanic, as well as a museum for American immigration during the Great Depression as it would have been the only great depression era ocean liner still A round had it been preserved. Thing is no one would’ve cared about its other sister Britannic, because no one knew about Britannic outside of the fact that she was the Second and least popular sister to the Titanic out of the three ships.

    Tbh the only thing I disagree with is saying Brittanics wreck is more interesting than titanic I mean like Britannic just kinda sits there on its side and while it's cool that is at a divable depth and is a big corral reef there's just so much more happening in Titanic's wreck with the debris field the ship being in two parts and all the mystery and intrigue of the 1990s over how it ended up in that state

    I'm confused. You said you like the boxy designs best but you are really excited about the more streamlined liners. They all have their good and bad points.

      I said the that I prefer the boxy designs. That doesn’t mean I don’t like streamline design liners, it just means that I think the boxy liners look better.

      Have you heard of the M.s. Sunnhordland which was built in 1943 as a minesweeper and became a passenger ship after being sold to norway, and later became the Kristina brahe for 20 years before being returned badk to the name sunnhordland after becoming a national monument, restaurant and charter vessel? If you like small passenger liners you might like her.
      Another skandanavian vessel is the M.s Nordstjernen which while still sailing as a passenger ship, is also a national monument, after the original line Hurgurten shipping that ran her sold her off a few years ago. She has that pre 1940 boxy style despite being built in 1956. Her cabins are tiny though.

    okay....why does this guy have the same thoughts as me with Britannic.....I have been drawing her since 5th grade as welll....damn. Also into Warships, however, Britannic isn't my MOST favorite anymore. I have mostly loved her original intended design, which I prefer anyways. However, Im mostly into the German Superliners of like 1914 or somethng now. But my most favorite by far is the SS United States.

    I don't hate the Britannic movie it's basically just a realitively short and fast paced period action film like U-571 that uses a historical event as a backdrop, although the King's man did this type of action film much better.

    I totally disagree with your choices. Normandie was the most beautiful liner ever built, and you only mention it number 9. I don't understand why. Maybe because it was a french liner ? It could be an explanation as I see you don't even mention France in your top 10.

    • @theshipenthusiast

      It’s my opinion. I prefer boxy liners of the 1900-1910s more. If it was the other way around normandie would be higher.
