Vive la France! Vive paquebot France! She was magnificent, and literally the ultimate North Atlantic express liner. Her hull was a masterpiece, combining hydrodynamic efficiency with jaw-dropping beauty. She was fast, making better than 35 knots on her trials. Only SS United States, with far greater shaft horsepower, was faster. The spirit of her mother, Normandie, lived on in her, but she had a unique identity all her own. And, like Normandie, she will never be forgotten.
@@GeoStreber first of all, Majestic's real name was Bismarck, not Vaterland. And secondly, I just can't see where the problem is if someone wants to call her Majestic. She never got to serve as "Bismarck" so calling her Majestic is more appropriate, since she only served as a White Star liner.

I’ve lost count of the hours I’ve spent continually browsing through all seven volumes of Great Passenger Ships of the World by Arnold Kludas! These books have, and continue to give me, such pleasure!
I have to agree, Britannic just has this charm and carisma i mean she was supposed to be the pinnacle of the Olympic class and although she never got to be that; from her plans and renderings, there is no doubt that she would’ve been up there as one of the greatest ocean liners to ever sail the Atlantic.

I understand exactly what you mean about the Georgic being an evolution of the Olympic class, the ship almost feels like a blend of the Olympic class and the Queen Mary or Queen Elizabeth
What we like about the early ships, from the Aquitania back, is their length to width ratio. The older ships are approximately 1 to 10, that is their width is one tenth their length. The only ship after the Aquitania with that ratio was the United States which was very beautiful in that way. The Olympic class ships were just about perfect in this ratio. Also their superstructures were low. The Aquitania is a little too wide for my taste. I saw lots of ships when I was a kid in NYC. My father sailed on the Britannic (3), so I was able to wander around it on sailing day. I sailed on the Flandre, the Liberte and the Raffaello. Since I'm not an art dreco fan, I had no use for the interiors of the Liberte, the Normandie or the Ile de France (I got to wander on that ship, too). I enjoy your videos especially your music picks. Keep up the good work!
1. Normandie 2. SS United States 3. SS France (1961) 4. RMS Queen Elizabeth 5. SS Bremen (1928) 6. TS Awatea* 7. SS France (1912) 8. RMS Lusitania 9. SS Île de France 10. RMS Mauretania * Awatea was a beautiful, jewel-like liner that was built for the Tasman Strait run. At 545 ft., she was much smaller than most North Atlantic liners, but was their equal in all other aspects. She was fast, reaching 25+ knots, which, considering her size and theoretical hull speed, was rather impressive. Sadly, she was lost in WWII, going out like a warrior. I encourage anyone with a love of ocean liners to look up this lesser-known but exquisite ship.
Agree with your no.1.The interiors were never installed and after the sinking were sold off and are now in many houses all over UK and Ireland so parts of her still in use.
Solid list you have there my friend. I must say I wasn't quite expecting Britannic to be your number 1, simply because I don't hear that too often. But I fully understand why: she was an absolutely lovely ship and I can only imagine what life she may have led had she not hit that mine, or even if Titanic never sunk. I have yet to figure out what my top 10 are, but I can say it's vastly different from yours in that my top 3 are Titanic/Titanic II, United States, and Queen Mary 2. With Titanic, very similar story to yours. Don't really need to say much, except she was a beautiful ship with arguably the most incredible, if tragic story of all time, and that were it not for her, not only would I not have been introduced to ships the way I was, if ever, but I likely wouldn't be where I am today in that I'll be attending college in a few weeks to pursue naval architecture. If she does get a second chance at life in the form of Titanic II, that would bring about a happy ending to this most famous of stories. With United States, yeah I agree her interior was kinda bland (although that was less due to the Navy's requirements and more so with Gibbs already having an obsession with fire safety), give or take a few nice areas like the First Class dining hall, but overall she is everything I could ever ask for in a ship: big, sleek, fast, strong, blue, and built right here in the USA. An all-around technological marvel, and I eagerly await the day when she is restored to her former glory. She was the first ocean liner I had ever encountered up close, and to one day be able to walk her decks would be a dream come true. Lastly, with Queen Mary 2, I don't care what anyone else says. Even when compared to the liners of old, she is still one of the most beautiful sights I have ever laid eyes on. Being the only ocean liner currently operating in the world she thus carries an age-old tradition on her back alone, and that is a very noble thing. Most of all though, she was launched less than a year after I was born, so unlike even my top 2, she is a ship that I feel I can relate to in a way that I can't describe. If I had to guess, probably as two young kids trying to achieve an impossible dream in bringing back the age of the ocean liner. This community is blowing up and I love it. Take care, man. :)
I like the spin you put on a liner(by design) that wasn't used as a liner in actual service. For me, the queen of this category would be s/s Oceanic (1965) of the Home Lines. Probably the pinnacle of Italian design, she simply didn't have a bad angle. She went on to have one of the most successful careers out there, and was easily one of the most influential ships of all time with regard to imitation of her design traits. Never the biggest or the fastest, she was simply done "right".
All wonderful modes of transport! For me, the all encompassing quality to these vessels, is elegance and with a sense of purpose! How I’d love to travel on one of these ships today!

Fun fact: I got into maritime history at the age 5 I would always tell my mom “MOM! DID YOU KNOW THE LUSITANIA SANK IN 18 MINUTES” she for so annoyed she even told me to shut up once!
You presented your case very well. I concur with you on the “why” factor. You simply just fall in love with some ships. You can’t pinpoint the “why” anymore than you can do so for falling in love with some people. True, you may have a “type” you prefer, but each ship is a lady … and some just pluck at your heartstrings more than others. Best example is the Mauretania. I love her, too. I always have … and I’m an old man. My personal favorite is the Nieuw Amsterdam. To me, she is the most perfectly proportioned ship ever built. I can find no flaw in her design. I first saw her in a magazine from 1968, when I was just a boy, and I’ve never grown tired of looking at her. Keep making videos.
That’s kinda the point of this video though. I do feel looking back on this video that I should have explained my choices a little better, but the point of the video is to explain why I love the ship and how I did in fact fall in love with them. I do falter on that theme though throughout the video and when I do remake this, I plan on fixing these mistakes.
Allow me to throw in my 2 cents- Bremen is a ship that has grown on me over the years, and she's now in my personal 'top 10'. Although her original short funnels are considered an iconic element of her design, I think the taller funnels improved her appearance dramatically. They were just the right size, and I feel they transform a handsome ship into a beautiful one. Strangely, her sister, Europa, though very similar in design, was never quite as attractive to me. I've never been able to nail down exactly why....I suppose the small details can make all the difference.

I was very interested and looking forwards to more ocean liner vids. Two comments. Psychologically, you may be preferring Mauritania to Lusitania because of the latter's fate. A possible negative reaction since it is noted you record a positive one for the liner that was NOT torpedoed. The second comment is, frankly, that I noted the absence of the Queens, either Liz or Mary and I DO believe that they are a great pair. However, since the video is about personal preference, not any statistical thing, that's okay, too. I think I'd prefer to exit Empress and add Liz, but that's me.
Your options are valid. When choosing Mauretania over Lusitania, Lusitania’s sinking did not sway my opinion on which one I think is better. I in fact almost choose Lusitania but went with Mauretania because of the reasons stated in the video. I also “at the time” didn’t put the Queens on my list because I hadn’t known much about them. Now of course I know much more about them and might had put QM on my list.

I love her exterior but her interior is plane and boring. That’s what is holding me back from putting her higher on the list. Plus, their are much better ships than the US.
How can a game be overrated, it’s a game. How can a painting be overrated, it’s a painting, how can smartphone be overrated, it’s a smartphone. That’s you logic. Anything that is popular or unpopular can be considered “overrated” and “underrated”
Strange choices . Other countries like Germany and the Netherlands build beautiful ships. The Bremen and New Amsterdam were very beautiful inside and out.
I only chose ships which I know a lot about. I made this a while back and now know a lot more ships than when I made this. I still stand by most of my decisions though and since this is my list, no one can say I am wrong for choosing curtain ships.

@SMITH CLASS DESTROYER That is not true. The whole switch theory is very dumb since titanic and Olympic were only together for 44 days when people say that the switch took place. Olympic was in for prepares after her collision with HMS hawk and titanic during this time was still in very early fitting out. For a switch to take place, you would not only have to take Olympic and down grade her to an incomplete titanic, but also turn titanic into a fully completed ship in 44 DAYS. That is not enough time. Not to mention the differences between titanic and Olympic Structurally meaning you would have to remove all traces of Olympic being titanic and titanic being Olympic like complete replacing Olympics interiors and turning them into titanics interiors in 44 DAYS. Yet again, not enough time to do for all that to take place. Workers would notice and the public would notice unless they were in on it too which doesn’t make any sense.
They were never switched, as TheShipEnthusiast mentioned it’s impossible to switch every single piece of machinery and everything else in 44 days. The two ships were never switched as everything and I mean everything on the Olympic says “400” and the Titanic being “401”. And do you really believe that everything, boilers, piston engines and all that in 44 days?

Especially since my script writing style has changed in the past few months.
@@theshipenthusiast well, I think you did a great job. I thoroughly enjoyed watching.
How do you feel about the Bremen ? I realy like the Design of that ship, how do you feel abou it?
I think Bremen has a nice and modest design. I don't know a whole lot about her but I can still appreciate a good design.

The United States should be higher up, it’s a great ship
Welp, it’s my opinion.
I love her exterior but her interior is plane and boring. That’s what is holding me back from putting her higher on the list. Plus, their are much better ships than the US.
@@theshipenthusiast yea, I agree the interior could have been like normadies or queen Mary’s but I guess there had to be no wood.
You are a true Educator!!!! Keep it up!!!!
But I like Britannic
Ditto Oceanic
How can a ship be overrated it’s a ship
How can a game be overrated, it’s a game. How can a painting be overrated, it’s a painting, how can smartphone be overrated, it’s a smartphone. That’s you logic. Anything that is popular or unpopular can be considered “overrated” and “underrated”
I feel bad that there all gone
My top 1 is britannic
Strange choices . Other countries like Germany and the Netherlands build beautiful ships. The Bremen and New Amsterdam were very beautiful inside and out.
I only chose ships which I know a lot about. I made this a while back and now know a lot more ships than when I made this. I still stand by most of my decisions though and since this is my list, no one can say I am wrong for choosing curtain ships.
@@theshipenthusiast If you give me your adres I wil send you a book about famous European Ships. The book is in Dutch ( my native country) and in English. Short stories about rond about hundred ships. I have had ik for years. You don't have to pay anything.
What is the book called? I think I would feel better buying it myself
@@theshipenthusiast it is no longer in a bookshop
To old. I look it up tomorrow and give you the details..
@@theshipenthusiast I found the book. It has a Dutch name but every ship in tbe book gets an english comment.. it can not be bought anymore but I found you a second hand copy. If you give me your adres I will send you the book.
I agere Titanic is overrated ever time people Titanic Titanic Titanic Her sister deserve more love
Like any normie, putting olympic class on top
Well these are my favourites and I’m not a normie for liking them.
Face reveal
Olympic is titanic
The theory is false
Oml you have to be kidding
Stop ever one Say they are switched
BOI
Britannic isn't an ocean liner she's a passenger liner
Then also Olympic And Titanic
I never liked many of the Cunard ships, some of them were quite ugly.
Fact the titanic that sank was the olympic and the olympic that was scraped was the titanic
Not to mention the differences between titanic and Olympic
Structurally meaning you would have to remove all traces of Olympic being titanic and titanic being Olympic like complete replacing Olympics interiors and turning them into titanics interiors in 44 DAYS. Yet again, not enough time to do for all that to take place. Workers would notice and the public would notice unless they were in on it too which doesn’t make any sense.
th-cam.com/video/4QnwbStYcyw/w-d-xo.html here is a great video debunking the theory
My number one would be the Empress of Ireland (1906) I even built one from lego in minifigure scale
